Non-glossy case for Mini Quiet Pro?
« on: Thu, 14 November 2013, 17:13:57 »
Are there any non-glossy cases that fit the Mini Quiet Pro?  Any non-glossy options other than painting the standard case?  Thanks.

I've seen great results using car grade wraps.

Wow, one of the main reasons I got rid of mine was due to the glossy finish, but that wrap looks amazing.

The Ergo Pro will have a matte finish.  Will be interesting to see how it compares looks-wise.  :-)

Can you give us a little more info about this mod? Where did you get the wrap, and how did you apply it? Looks awesome; I want to do this to my Laptop Pro.

The image above is not tuananh_bkk's.  It's taken from this person--always great to give credit/links if taking someone else's photographs:
http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49920.msg1088247#msg1088247

It's spray painted, not wrapped.

I don't know much about it yet, still need to do some reading, but here's something called 'structural paint' that looks to give similar matte results:

I must say that I am surprised by how often companies still go for a glossy finish. It seems that there are many people out there that dislike it.

Personally, I do not like the look either. Though somehow, I ended up with only glossy peripherals : Glossy mouse, because I like the way it sticks to my hand even if I do not like the look. Glossy monitor because it was such a good deal I could not pass it up. Glossy keyboard (not all of them of course) because this keyboard only came with a glossy finish and, by now it it actually goes well with all the rest of my stuff. At least I like the consistency in the look now to an extent (but not really).

Yes, I keep a microfiber cloth near my computer at all times.

Yes, it's personal preference, similar to matte vs. glossy photos.

Arguing the other side, you don't see too many pianos with a matte finish.  :-)

True, but you aren't physically moving your piano around very often :)

When I had a Quiet Pro Mini it drove me nuts with the amount of smudges I would get on the case just by moving it around on my desk.

Yeah, it is personal preference, and I guess it is impossible to cater to everyone. I do not hate the look though otherwise I would not have bought it.

The keyboard has a lot going for it. The switches fulfill their promise in not being noisy and feel nice (to me at least), and I love the layout of the keyboard.  Overall I think it is a great product and for me it is easy to see past the glossyness. I just think that the keyboard would appeal to more people if there were also a matte version available. I am seriously suspecting that some brands like Das, are hardly mentioned on these forums just because the glossy cases that they have.

If there is ever a nonglossy version released, then the one I use at home will be transferred to one of my work locations and I will start using a sexy matte one at home.

Glad you're happy with it -- in spite of the glossiness.

Actually, we're somewhat locked into the glossy look for that model.  Since it shares the same tooling with the Mac version, which is glossy white, we can't texture it to be matte.

However, if you like matte, this one will be matte...

Very cool. Looking forward to it. Your "quiet" switches are one of the few both the girlfriend and my co-workers will tolerate when sitting in close proximity.

I'm hoping to start the group buy this month.  Just need to work out a few technical details, review all the feature requests, and then put up the web pages.

If you posted in the IC link above, you'll be notified when it starts.

I'm not a huge fan of the big spacebar row.

Could you elaborate on the decision? @Matias

@Matias Regarding the 60% group buy, can you clarify what will be the surface finish on the plastic and aluminum options?  Matte for both or only for the plastic?  Thanks.

It will be matte for both.

For the aluminum, it will be anodized with a surface finish similar to Apple's aluminum enclosures.

The spacebar is the same shape and material (PBT) as the one on the Ergo Pro.  You won't find anything more comfortable than this.

FYI, we changed the design of the spacebar about 6 times before we were satisfied with the shape and feel of it.
