[IC] GMK Neon City (Kitting done, more renders!)
« on: Mon, 30 March 2020, 15:40:15 »
Hello Geekhack,

and welcome to my Interest Check for my first GMK Design - GMK Neon City

Intro:

I have had a Theme like this a long time in my mind: Something more colourful, but not too bright. Or in other words: a darker Pink + Purple.
As I am a huge fan of what I call them "Neon Cities", I tried my best and making this into a Keycap Theme, and have therefore designed a colourway, I am very happy myself, so to say.

Just imagine, a great night, with a drink or 2 and just starring out to Mega buildings, Skyscrapers - and of course Neon Signs.

Technical Infos:

I have picked Pantone colours, why you ask?
Simple: I don't own a RAL colour sheet and Every attempt I tried on finding a good matching RAL-colour, I ended up disliking it because it always didn't have the "punch" in contrast I wanted it to have.

Kits:

Base Kit with ICON Mods
Katakana Monolegends (is still depending on some factors, if it won't be possible it will include hiragana Monolegends.)
Novelties (This will include Ortho Compatibility, so don't worry on that site.)

Kits:
Base kit:

Katakana Monolegends:

Novelties:

Some Board renders:

More Renders, including the set on boards, etc can be found here.

Vendors:
TBD

Deskmat:

I have made the decision to commission a Designer for a Deskmat design, which i am more than happy to show to you! :)

I will also Release the FULL IMAGE without watermarks or something when the GB is over!

FAQ:

This set looks a lot similar to Laser!
Well, this set is not as blue-heavy as laser, but the theme is similar, that might be the reason why this has been thought.
The mod legends have a too low contrast!
I think, that in reality, the contrast will look alright, but I certainly think about brightening it up a bit.

Roadmap:

  • Introduce more Renders
  • Evaluate the Google form
  • Design Novelties
  • Pitch the idea to Vendors
  • GB Process
  • Answer the Feedback of the community :) (Ongoing process, will never finish this, probably :D)

Banner:

If you like my Idea and want to support it, please consider putting this banner in your Signature!

Shoutouts:

I love to give some people a shoutout which supported me with information, help and a lot of other things managing to get this set where it is right now!
  • Emil - Or the reason why I even started.
  • Oblotzky - For taking his time and explaining me a few things, as well as creating the renders (which I have atm.)
  • Apollosdesign (@apollosdesign on IG) - for creating this Amazing!! Artwork for the deskmat
  • Energieschleuder - For helping me, too as well as hopefully being the reason that Katakana Monolegends will be a thing!
  • The whole German Keeb Community, seriously thank you guys for supporting me so much!
  • Special Thanks to the Keycap Designers Discord, great guys, helped me with a lot of things!
  • Bunny - Amazing guy, helped me with the Renders by providing me with a good template, had still a lot of things to do, none the less...

I probably have missed some, but those were the ones I had in my mind for now.
Everyone and I mean EVERYONE who helped me, supported me and what not, thank you so much!

Mod Background poll!

Thank you for voting, i try to gather as much information as possible so everyone can vote! :)

UPDATE: Poll decided for keeping it purple. That's going to be it! (It was a close call with 55% / 45%, so I will try my best and find a colour everyone believes is nice!)

The theme is similar, that's correct!
But if you compare them like actually side by side, you can see a huge difference.
I have seen many people say that, because they have a picture of Laser in their had - but they're actually pretty different.

Yeah I agree, it's like laser with the alpha and mod colors flipped, but with a lighter purple. That said, I do like it, but a bit too similar to laser.

Mitolet alphas, laser mods? I have both sets right in front of me here. Honestly if you swapped the alpha colors and the mods colors it would at least be a combo that you can't quite get from current Mito sets.

Youre onto something with the colors and design!

I'd probably change up the mod legend color could possibly run into some contrast issues.

Good point!
Yes, I have heard this from many people before... but I believe that in reality, this might actually won't be that big of a deal.
But I will certainly consider this, thank you for your feedback!

There are some of us out there who liked violet tendencies and gmk dark's lack of contrast on the mods. You'd mentioned you'd picked Pantones-did you list them?

I did not yet because the colours are not 100% fixed yet, I am checking for the interest and asking for feedback, so this could still be a matter of change, but I certainly can include the Pantone colours at some point during the IC.

sweet idea. I think the general colorscheme is cool but not executed particularly well with how you have everything atm. the alphas seem too "loud" compared to the mods, which are super subdued. maybe upping their contrast to mirror the alphas would help.

Diggin the colorway here. I like how loud the alphas are.

Probably the least important aspect of this IC...  the proposed name of your set is a mouthful and seems to have little to do with your neon sign sentiments. Perhaps something like GMK Neonpunk or GMK Neon Dystopia or GMK Neon-Noir just to name a few ideas. I honestly expected more of a grayscale with a name like “GMK Technological Dystopia.”

GL with the IC!

Interesting aspect:
The idea behind the name is, basically rebuilding a theme like in Blade Runner, a civilization which have developed their technology in a bad way, where it basically led to a sort of Dystopian Future.

The reason why i didn't pick Cyberpunk or something similar is simply because of the fact, that i didn't want to use a name which is popular and therefore block it for a potential more skilled designer than me. Well this is my first ever keycap set i designed and therefore i still have too much to learn to block such a name.

But interesting idea, i will definetly think about changing the name.

I totally get the idea behind your theme. That’s why you can buy DSA 2049 on pimykeyboard right now. It is blade runner inspired. And also uses a more grayscale tone to convey that idea. Your colorway and neon sign idea goes beyond something as culturally relevant as Blade Runner though. Anyways, just my hot take on this. But I firmly believe having a catchy and memorable name is important for sets (looking at you pooped in the pool  ;D)

I didn’t suggest “cyberpunk” because it’s rather cliche in my opinion. We can totally let someone else use that  :p

I like this set!

My only recommendation would be that the pink on the mods is too dark. I think the contrast will be too low when it is made. The contrast from the alphas is high. The two together would not flow.

The year of space, sea and cyberpunk. Haha. Will need to let this one grow on me. The alphas are so flashy compared to the rest. Definitely looks like mitolet and laser had a baby.

Edit: Hah. Commented without reading replies. But hiney said it much better than I did.

As so many of you have pointed out that the name is too "mouthful" i have gotten a different idea for the name.

What is your guys opinion on the name "GMK Neon Cities"
Less mouthful and clearly represents the idea of the Set.
Please let me know what you think, i might also include that in the google form! (You have the ability to change your answers! :)

i like the theme, and think there is a lot of people that would like this keyset, but i would advice you to get a RAL catalog to look into colors, even if the colors are not final, or dont look like the real thing or render, they give us a good idea of the color and many designers have stated that color differs with every plastic batch.

Yes i know, but a RAL catalogue is pretty expensive, i would actually get my hands on one once i have the money, but i really just wanted to see if it is even valueable to continue working on the set any further, because it could be possible that the community just doesn't like it as this colour contrast / theme goes away from what is usually more on the 'popular' side.

Has Outrun or OuTRON been ever taken by another set? If you go with the latter, revisions or next round releases would be easy to label (ie, OuTRON2.0). Just a suggestion that I’ll add to the list.

GMK Neon City sounds dope. Go with that.

My last suggestion is to spend a solid week with your colors, come up a few different combos that highlight what you’re after, then share those with us or allow us to vote on them. Getting up close and personal with color codes will help a ton too. Specifically, as previously stated, I think the mods need the most attention to better match the contrast that appears to exist with the alphas. I also think there is too much competing purple/pink right now. Maybe try using the alpha green color as the accent color instead? If you insist on using 4 different colors, make it really count!

I like where you’re headed with this set and am excited to see what you come up with!

I am not sure with green, as this would go against the initial idea i had in my mind. I am strictly limited to:
- Pink
- Purple
- Turquoise / Teal

That's the initial idea, but i am sure i will get a combination, which complements every other part from the set even better.

For the name... i will be waiting until the poll hits a certain fixed point on votes for the name, whatever is most voted until the threshold has been hit, i will go with it.

Thank you guys, again, so much for your support! It is lovely to see, that so many people are actually interested and helpful in terms of feedback. :)

UPDATE: I have just ordered a RAL-Block, hopefully, this will arrive soon and thus it might make the colour decisions easier.
I thought since this thread is giving me A LOT of good and helpful feedback, as well as it seems there is a severe interest in it, that I can make good use of this colour-block! :)

hi, we've already had a few words on discord (norbert) a while ago about this set. about the set itself, yeah, like others said, mods contrast may be an issue, that blue and wine-red don't go that well together imo.
but that deskmat is KILLER, would buy it in a heartbeat! please start a standalone GB for the deskmat right now :p

i'm not sure if i would buy the set in it's current form, but i'm definitely gonna keep my eyes on this.

Deskmat says Night Runner purple edition

I see I wasn't the only one that thought that.  ;D

Oof. Night runner hasn’t been shipped yet has it? This set is just different enough in colors, but there are some striking similarities to the deskpad.

Shouldn't be too long from now actually.

It’s still night interestchecker right now

? You talking about my GB that is nearing deliver or?

If keycaps were anime characters, this looks like would be Night Runner's first enemy/ rival/ eventual ally. I love the colors, I hope this GB is successful!

Great description lol.

Theme is going to look close to NR novelties and deskmat but as long as no copying happens tis all good...we are on our way to not being rivals I guess?

Thank you!!

Have you tried out the font color (I don't know what it is exactly) used in Akko x Ducky Queen modifiers? It looks close to the font color of the alphas but brighter. EDIT: My bad. I thought it was a lighter turquoise. It's like an electric blue upon closer inspection.

For the ESC and Enter, would a neon pink with the current font color add more contrast with the rest of the keys? Like the Originative modifiers in the Miami colorway.

Small Update:
This set has now been renamed to "GMK Neon City" as the threshold of the question inside the google form has been hit, and this name seems to have been well received!

As for the colours, I have found some alternatives already, but before I settle down, I would like to wait on the RAL book before I will make final decisions.

« Reply #55 on: Mon, 06 April 2020, 06:54:46 »
As i really try my best to listen all the feedback, what immediately came out is, that the mod-background colour is a bit off.
I tried finding better matches and got settled to 2 colours, in which you can vote on this poll.
(Shoutout to: @Energieschleuder for the renders! On the renders you can also see the Katakana Monolegends i wanted to include in the set!)

I want everyone, even those who might not be interested to vote in there, so i can gather as much feedback as possible.

Also; my RAL-Book arrived, and i am quite honest here; the colours do look different than online, but still i can't seem to find the matching colours i was hoping for.

If this set will go live with Pantone colours tho, i will get myself the corresponding Pantone Chips, which can be send to GMK in which i hope, that they'll have an easier time getting the correct colours.

Thanks!

I don't mind the similarities to laser.  Tbh I like this set more as far as colors go...I can picture it looking really good on different colored boards.  I've put laser on so many boards and it just never looks right to me except on PC...and even then I don't like the red color.

I hope you make some fun novelties that don't focus on the "city" theme too much.  Laser had awesome novelties...I could see this set as a laser replacement for me if the novelties are really good.

Update Time!

I am currently working on the Kit renders, it's not so easy let me tell you that much. I am unexperienced with blender and learn a lot from this project.
So as first thing, renders!:
Deskmat:

Base Kit:

Novelties and other Kits, as well as scene renders, are WIP! So stay tuned for them.
For questions as well as feedback, I am always open for those, also for some people which have question, don't shy away from sending me a PM here or on Discord (SoraNoTenshi#1337)

Thank you and stay tuned! :)

I like the direction. I personally think the mod legends should be changed up as they kind of blend in to much, I’d rather see more contrast. I like the cyan like color for the alpha legends. Just need to get some physics color samples to make sure you have more accurate colors for renders.

I love it. Laser is so much different from this set, it’s a shame people treat a a good handful of different colors as “the same.”
There are a lot of color combinations/arrangements to a particular theme, just like how similar songs exist in the same genre!
Do you have thoughts on Korean sublegend alphas, as well, by any chance? <3

I wasn't a big fan of Desk mat for this set, so i cobbled together a few of my own if anyone's wants the pics. There are several websites that will make you a custom desk pad for like 40$. You just upload them the pic, and they'll ship it to you (i've used the website "inked gaming" myself, and was very happy with results).
Anywho, i just found these images online (mostly wallpapers) and just resized them to the correct ascpect (35x16) and edited some, i have a few more if anyone wants me to post them.

I've had great luck with "inkedgaming"'s custom mat's (or at least I've been very happy with it.)
For my Yuri set, i uploaded them this very pic ( i don't think it's all that more hirez then the others i posted, but i'm not the most knowledgeable) and i think the result is awesome. (The mat is a little dirty) I did pay the extra 15$ for "professional editing" but i honesty think it's probably pointless as long as you upload a pic with the proper proportions, and all the pics i posted are all ready in the correct proportions for a 35" x 16" desk mat.  Last one is a close up.

I have one more example i had them make me, of a really grainy lo quality image, and i think it still looks pretty good, if you want me to post some pics of it, i will. (I think i still have the original pic i uploaded for it..)

Maybe some common neon signs would be a cool idea for novelty keys? Moon symbols and English? The only English ones i can think of though are "open," "closed," and the only cool one:That girl silhouette outside strip clubs that's blinks, making it look like she's dancing. Are there common Japanese/Chinese/Korean neon signs that would work?

As you have already triggered the bump, i thought i may also give an update.

My personal stuff is so far almost done, i successfully moved.
The renders are finalized, the kitting is also done (unless there is really a huge uprising in a specific kit, there will only be 3 kits!)

So stay tuned, i hope i can create the update in about a week.

I realize it's probably too late for any of this, but..
Any chance on making the alphas separate from the modifiers, so i don't have to buy the entire "base" kit when I'm only going to be using the Katakana/hiragana sublegend alphas..?
(and an all modifier (blue) color F-row would be pretty cool, i don't know why people think alternating the color of the f-row clusters looks good.)

With the seperate kit for the alphas is a Katakana Monolegend set planned, which can be bought without the modifiers, so that shoult work for you.

In terms of F-Row, i will not make any changes there in the basekit and leave it 'traditional'.

Awesome, and no biggy on the traditional F-row, I'm probably the only one that feels that way (or it wouldn't be so common a design choice), I''ll just put it on a 65%.

New update is now there!

Kitting is done, yes only 3 kits.
NorDeUk is not happening because the Katakana Monolegends have full support for iso (mixed with the Base Kit!)
40s / Ortho is also not happening, but frequently used keys are part of the novelties kit!!

Katakana Monolegends have seperate spacebars to support mixing! I am sure many of you might like the alpha design but not so much the full kit, so mixing is done easily and efficiently with the katakana kit!

I hope i can somewhat revive the hype. :)

Nice update, and I like the Katakana Monolegends!  :thumb:
Although, it would be nice for us 40s users not to have to buy the full base kit! This would be possible with a slightly larges novelties kit?

Which 40s keys are missing?

I believe u can buy Katakana Monos + Novelties and you should be covered with 40s... i think..

It covers with the number of keys, and if a 2u is added I think it covers most 40s, although I'm not sure since I use mostly orthos.
Other than that it's just if you want the same colors on the modifiers. E.g., blue keys around the alphas. But if you use the alphas for row 1-4, and spice it up with the mods you are ok :)

Katakana monologends look better than I thought they would. Any ideas/updates on an artisan key? Hoping for a Canadian vendor.

Hi there! I have a few suggestions for your kits:

Base kit:
Show Image

  • Change 1.25u Code keys to Super for consistency.

  • Add a second R4 1u Alt key. Without it, the 1.5u Super keys can't really be used.
    • Alternatively, if you don't want to add the second Alt, change the 1u Super keys to Code. That way, 2× 1u Code and 2× 1.5u Super can be used together to cover Mac and OG HHKB bottom rows. But this is likely the less preferable option for most people; it's probably better to just add the second Alt.

  • Change the R4 1u \| ISO key to <> in order to avoid duplicate keys. See here for more details.

  • If you don't want to offer a separate spacebars kit (which I would recommend), consider including 2.75u, 2.25u and 2u spacekeys in base. See GMK Tea Witch's base kit for an example.
    • However, seeing as your base kit is already pretty large, offering a separate spacebars kit is likely the better option. It would also allow you to offer accent-colored 6.25u and 7u spacebars.

Katakana Monolegends:
Show Image

  • This kit is missing a R1 1u key. This character is a Japanese prolonged sound mark. See here for more details. Also, here are two examples of kits that have this key (the same character is used in both hiragana and katakana).

  • To go further on the topic of kana legends, the R4 1u key should be changed to . Again, this is for correctness and compatibility with actual layouts that are used for typing Japanese.

  • I recommend including a second Tab key in this kit. That way buyers will be able to cover two keyboards if they buy base + katakana (provided they use slightly different layouts). This is a common inclusion in alt alphas kits such as this one.

Again, I recommend adding a spacebars kit to this set. Split spacebar setups, as well as Alice and other boards that use small spacekeys, have become very popular in the community. Also, people like having the option of spicing up their setup with accent bars. For these reasons, spacebars kits always do well in GBs.
See here for suggestions on which keys you can include in this kit. Beside those, you'll also want to include a B key for Alice support.

Thank you for this awesome feedback!
I will definetly consider most of it.

In regards of the spacebar kit... well i also thought about it.
But in terms of that, i want to first get my vendors.

Thank you again for this great feedback, this is what i love to see!

Anyone that's thinking about picking this set up should check this mat out EDITED: Nevermind the mat in question was designed by some tool that harms the keyboard community.

There will be, I will have some great news in a couple of Weeks I guess.

With that I also want to reassure that this project is NOT dead. It's worked on and I also have almost all of the Vendors set yet!

Is there going to be an issue with that "sunset" novelty? Apparently, GMK has the utterly stupid idea that it some how belongs to Laser.... or that Laser is to be the only neon/cyberpunk/80's set they do...

So it sounds like GMK really is so incompetent and stupid as to think that novelty somehow belongs to Laser/mito? What bunch of morons. I really don't want to give those fools any more of my money. And i am VERY close to starting an anti GMK crusade over this BS.
Mito needs to do the right thing, and tell GMK he has no claim over that symbol what so ever. WTF is going on here?

As soon as I noticed the setting sun mod I suspected this kind of BS was going on.
I wasn't let down it seems.
Imagine pulling this BS after manufacturing sets with the literal IP in their name.

Yup, it almost seems like someone is telling them to specifically not run any sets similar to Laser... hmmmm. But I'm sure, given how open and transparent GMK has been,  we can totally trust that is not the case.....
This entire thing is just gross.
