In other words, you can use the Gateron blacks stock, and they will feel almost like 68g (Korean) lubed MX blacks. Or you can lube them, and they will feel like lubed vintage blacks. :)

Wow! Go blacks!

All this talk of clears being unusable with stock springs is dis-concerning, it sounds like they are ALOT lighter than the cherry reds.

They are. You don't want clears unless you are prepared to spring swap.

+1 ... I like Cherry Reds and typed on them for 7 months straight, but the springs in Gateron Clears are noticeably lighter than Reds. Basically to the point of being unusably light.

Realforce EK45 (Silenced)  |  Realforce 87UW (45g)  |  Realforce 87UWS (Variable)
Filco MJ2 TKL (Cherry Clears)  |  Phantom 87 (78g Gateron Clears)  |  Phantom 86 (67g Zealios)

I'm going to be using 78g Korean springs on Stricts recommendation. What would be a good lube to complete the ultimate linear?

What about the red lube sold by EK? I'm asking because I have it so I wonder what it is worth.

Is there a specific one that you could recommend? I thought that they evaporated after some time and left behind residue making the switch even stickier - any truth to that? Also could I use the same lube for the springs? I'm trying to protect my wallet!

Sold out on geekhackers.org, and [CTRL]ALT store is down. But you can always PM BunnyLake to order, too.

Krytox doesn't evaporate, so you never need to reapply. You COULD use Krytox for springs, but it is expensive for that purpose. I recommend Victorinox Multi Tool Oil.

I tried it for Ergo Clears and it resulted in making the switch mushier, it is pretty thick. Maybe I used too much , but I feel like it's more for stabilizers than switches.

Damn I tried to find some Krytox lube when I was looking for some. I wasn't able to put my hands on some. I guess I didn't look well enough.

Considering the Mecklube 2, have you ever tried it and can speak from experience that it is not good enough? Or have you only tried Krytox, as you know it works well you recommend it?

I haven't tried Mechlube 2, but I don't think anything can come close to Krytox. There was a post by mkawa that explains its properties. I'll see if I can find it.

I feel like you cannot find Krytox in Europe. Last time I checked the only offer were from the US.

Yeah JD posted it a few posts ago. I'm not sure I'll be ordering more than $50 so I'll be paying $9 for the delivery. I'll just go for the cheapest one I can find considering it is the same product.

To apply lube with a syringe, would you just put a dot in the recommended areas or would you still use a brush or something to spread it out?

Yes, I use a small nylon brush.  Keep in mind that is actually pretty easy to over lube.  If you put too much lube the switches will feel mushy for about a month or so.  I use a paint brush and I paint on a SUPER thin layer.  I am mixing my own Krytox lube (I have both oil and grease), so I had to play with it a bit before I got a mixture that I liked.

So, today a package from Zeal arrived, and inside of it he included a lubed Gateron clear with a 62g spring. I de-soldered the Cherry escape switch off of my Phantom, and replaced it with the Gateron.

It is a REALLY smooth switch, as everyone has been saying. I'm definitely glad I joined this GB now that I've had a chance to sample one switch.  :thumb:

It's like.. plastic butter.

Switches are not what causes ping. The case and plate materials and construction are what causes ping. MX switches can be used in a quality keyboard with zero ping. And I have an IBM keyboard with tee Alps that pings like crazy. Topre don't really ping, due to the nature of the slider mechanism in the plate. That's why they thock. :)

Some customs springs w/o lube can also ping at times.

:thumb:

Can anyone who is already using the switches comment on whether or not they ping the same way as MX?

Switches are not what causes ping. The case and plate materials and construction are what causes ping. MX switches can be used in a quality keyboard with zero ping. And I have an IBM keyboard with tee Alps that pings like crazy. Topre don't really ping, due to the nature of the slider mechanism in the plate. That's why they thock. :)

In addition, I believe the material and thickness of keycaps also minimally contributes to "pinging." Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Looks like clears and blacks are now above 20k! Awesome! Sounds like this is a done deal then.

Have you guys spoken to Gateron about these quantities? I'm sure they are more than happy to sell you this many switches... but how's their stock? Do they envision their being supply issues?

The amounts we're getting right now are on the lower end of the spectrum of order size for Gateron. They can crank out a hell of a lot more than this is not a lot of time

Down for a 100 each clears and blacks. I was curious if it was possible that I could submit payment now, as they both seem to have hit the 20k mark and I like to have my affairs sorted ASAP.

That's fine, I was expecting that answer. Figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. :thumb:

Could someone advise on a place to get some springs for the clears? Also, what would be your choice of spring for these switches?

I prefer using the yellow brush tip to place an even coating on the friction points.

Yellow brush tip?

first time lubing, and I gotta say it's a great tool to manage a consitent lubing

Thank you. Wouldn't a thin paint brush do the trick too?

Yes, I use a small nylon brush.  Keep in mind that is actually pretty easy to over lube.  If you put too much lube the switches will feel mushy for about a month or so.  I use a paint brush and I paint on a SUPER thin layer.  I am mixing my own Krytox lube (I have both oil and grease), so I had to play with it a bit before I got a mixture that I liked.

If you put too much of it, is it possible to wash it away? It seems that the Krytox doesn't evaporate so it means that if you put too much, it will still have to much of it no matter what. Or perhaps I'm missing something.

What does "pinging" mean for a keyboard? Sorry for the stupid question but that's the first time I'm seeing this word used about keyboards.
