[GB] GMK Carbon R2 (FINISHED)
« on: Wed, 31 October 2018, 14:08:57 »
Welcome to GMK Carbon Round 2 drop.

If you have any questions just reply below i will do my best to answer you.

As i previously said in the IC thread, the initial prices are beefy but they are also justified due to the new molds (1.25u R5) and very generous coverage.
My suggestion is just to join every kit you really want and at the end of the drop you can always discard or change your order if particular kits dont meet the desired pricings.

Sorry the Carbon Cadet are not real alphas but are more novelty. They miss lot of keys (especially number row) to be called alphas. Also spacebars are only available in base sets and Carbon Cadet is meant to be paired with one of the base sets or the GMK Carbon R1.

Will all the salty keycaps be in the kit? I.e. the ones shown besides the 4 carbon key caps?

I know kits are locked but I just wanted to point out that there doesn’t appear to be a 1u R2 \| cap. SA Carbon had this in the alphas and some GMK sets (Serika, didn’t check others) have them in 40s kits.

I can't remember why i've put that R2 |\ key into alphas but i know it was a filler for something. Anyway no basic layout (basic layout are layouts which are derived very closely from the default layout 100%) has this key. And yes the kits are locked.

Do not hesitate and just join for the kits you need. Closer to the end of drop you can always discard or change your order if the price is still not right for you.

Out of curiosity, what happens to the molds for the R5 1.25u keys once this drop is over? Are they available to any sets anyone runs with GMK after this, or are they somehow tied to T0mb3ry and/or Massdrop?

They would be open to anyone afterwards. Novelties are the only thing I am aware of that are locked to the designer. For example the convex 2.25 and 2.75 spacekeys will also be free for all.

Sorry to be negative, but the pricing on the Umka kit is totally bumming me out, most clearly explained by this:

I had my heart set on combining Boneyard, Umka, and Bone Base to get full coverage across 2 TKL/75s with a monochrome Grey set and monochrome Ivory, but for the way pricing is setup I cannot justify it at all. If any of the potential pricing had been discussed in the IC, I would have advocated that Boneyard and Umka be combined into a third base set at which point just spin-off the "Carbone" colorway into its own set/GB, since it really doesn't have much to do with the original Carbon theme, and stands on its own as a classy standalone colorway (without the skull novelty).

nothing new

it's cause they have to do more work to sort the things

I think NorDEUK kit is horrible idea. I understand MOQs etc but people wanting to get their lang kit, like UK only, need to pay a lot for whole banch of caps that they won't use...

This is actually a reason why I for example do not buy those GBs, as it's too expensive to get whole kit, just to get few caps from it...:(

I understand the frustration, but there's no feasible alternative, even for SP SA where the MOQ is just 25.

Pricing and MOQ spreadsheet has been updated and it look week for a drop with so many kits. IMO to many choices and high pricing are the reason. Also there are 1952 base sets from round 1 floating around. Probably it would do greater if split in several drops. Say Carbon, Bone and probably Umka. Anyway here we are and the drop will be held till the end. Some kits will make and probably some not. Depends on how far one kit is away from meeting its moq MD might make that kit happen, like it was done in previous drops.

Instead of salt novelties for the next GB, you might need to make a money bag one! :))

Sorry was not meant to rob people. As i said above i think its just to many expensive choices at the same time is an overkill.

Btw burning money bag would probably match/describe our hobby. I'll look into such novelty but i do not promise.

Are deskpads coming any time soon?

Afaik they are currently in production and should be delivered somewhere in February.

I've expected that people would choose for example one base kit + one child kit. For example "Carbon + warning signs" or "Bone + rolling bones" or maybe xy base set and maybe x and y child kit. Ofc there are combos where you need more money. But that happens is that many want like almost every kit or particular amount of kits in order to reach specific style like umka with carbon cadet which ofc will cost 400+ because kits are stretched across two base sets. As i said there are some expensive offers and thats why i chose to offer Umka mods at 50 MOQ. I knew that combo would be expensive just by the fact its an stand alone modifiers set which are always expensive. And those kits cost that they cost. So its a lesson for me (and hopefully for others to) to offer in my future GMK drops just one base set and few child kits but optimized ones which are also cheaper.

i can understand that i still bought the umka and baazarre alphas idc if they hit lower points or not but i think you structured kits well and for what you pay you get some great stuff however if prices go down even better i think it'll hit some good price drops seems like its very desired.

Don't get me wrong i don't blame anyone but me for the current state. I predicted the pricing in most cases correctly because i have little bit experience with development of keysets but i treated GMK GB almost like an SP GB by offering too much at the same time. Well and ofc i underestimated how the kits will be bought.

Don’t blame yourself. Carbon is popular and this release is epic. It’s mostly due to the over abundance of group buys lately. Money is spread thin... Anyway I can’t wait for next spring when this comes in the mail!

For me, this is the most exciting group by in months.  That is entirely due to the number of choices and the added rows to the profile.  Because of that, I expected to pay more.

Unfortunately, I don't think many people understand how more kits and new tooling contributes to the price of a drop.  This is evident by the number of "why do I have to buy more keys than I need" comments.

Anyway, I think you did a great job on this one and I'm all the way in.

+1 for the burning money bag novelties!! It would be even funnier if it wasn't so true, or maybe that makes it all the more funny - IDK.

I like Carbon a lot but GMK is just not my thing. Neither is MT3 - keep hitting the damn sharp edges... If/when SA Round 3 happens I will be in for bone mods at least.

I too am disappointed by the sales. Was hoping this would be a monster. However, I have to say I really like the kits and the design and am looking forward to it even at a higher price than it would be if it sold like hotcakes.
