will you have a physical sample of the board ready to show us before the buy opens?Im not sure when exactly the proto is arriving, but he did order it recently.
Am curious to what the price point would be marketed as, iirc the UEK is just around the corner at around 200USD
Can we get some renders with a few different key profiles?
This is an autobuy for me, but I'd honestly prefer to see QMK on here.
What chip is going to be on the PCB?
looks nice. ISO support would be awesome thoIts gonna use an integrated thick plate, so its pretty much confirmed to be a no
Perfect timing for me as I have been getting into ALPS switches & AEKIIs lately! I got a really janky AEK64 PCB I managed to get working I was planning on doing an ALPS build with, but would much rather go with a full kit like this. I do have say the fact the PCB is using Keyplus is a little worrisome though. I hope that it is an easier solution than the QMK or other firmware flashing utilities, but I'd be lying if I said I'd prefer it over them on what will surely be a decently expensive kit. Anybody have any experience with Keyplus at all yet? Just wondering how well it works & reliable it is so far?

The firmware is a concern of mine as well & I'd also like to know what IC the PCB will be using? Just kinda hesitant to tear apart one of my AEKIIs for a 65% or 60% ALPS build until I'm 100% behind the kit.
I don't know who ai03 or Switchplate Peripherals are. Have they worked on other products?

What's the price point that we're looking at?
I'd love to get one in each color :p
Can we get split backspace support please?Again, the plate is fixed, so the layout is fixed.
Can we get split backspace support please?
I'm new to geekhack and groupbuys in general but will there an option for just the PCB? I love 65% and Alps but I don't think I'll be able to drop $200+ on this unfortunately.

Why the 6.5u spacebar? That's not a very common size and rarely included in any base kits. Have you considered a 1.25 / 1.25 / 1.25 / 6.25 / 1 / 1 / 1 / 1 / 1 layout?

So we would need 2 sets of caps to make a full 65% layout, right? Since we need the extra for the right side shift2 x AEK caps, or 1 M0116 I believe

Yes please.
Any even remotely small chance of different colors?
I'd LOVE something more than grey/space grey!
The PCB runs an atxmega32a4u. It is much higher performing than a typical atmega32u4, while being lower in price.
As for the firmware, Keyplus is magic. Zero driver issues, one-click reflash keymaps in a fraction of a second, no need to reflash firmware every time, unbrickable. I have been using it on my two daily driver boards for a few weeks now without any issues.

looks great, looks like it's gonna cost a TONIt'll still be sub 400.

You actually need an M0116 set to get that "right shift" since it's slightly larger than the ones provided in the normal AEK keyset for the bottom row.
So you need 1 AEK & 1 M0116.. or you can just have a smaller right shift that won't look as flush.
Good news!
AuthenticDanger will be producing resin-cast 1.75U shifts color-matched to the original AEK caps. This means there is no more need to purchase two AEKs to build this board.
More details will be added to the OP post soon.
Also, we are considering some more colors. Some options have been added to the IC form, along with a suggest-your-own-color field.

First off - love it - may well be purchasing when the time comes (preface over).

I'm curious as to why 4mm for the plate? Everything I've heard about Alps (more specifically tactile Alps) is that preference leans towards thinner and more flexible plates rather than the opposite, 1.2mm seems to be a common choice and I've even seen copper quite frequently. Will the 4mm integrated not be far too stiff for comfortable usage of something like a brown? (And that's a genuine question btw, I really don't know the answer).
Will we be able to see how the resin 1.75 shift matches AEK caps before the buy starts?

Opted for 4mm plate mainly for the solid sound/feel, as well as increased durability in the long run.

I know that it is designed for AEK caps but will this be compatible with other caps as well?
ok thanks :)I know that it is designed for AEK caps but will this be compatible with other caps as well?
Not OP but if it works for AEK it works for other caps. AEK caps just have the bottoms of them cut off they're not any higher up.
weight?Roughly 1000g. No separate screw-in weight, but the shell is decently hefty.
I know that it is designed for AEK caps but will this be compatible with other caps as well?Theoretically, yes. However, they might look a bit out of place due to the curvature, and finding a 6.5u spacebar may be difficult.
Are you still shooting for an end of June GB? I'm curious so I can prep myself financially.

I'm shooting to close it at the end of June or maybe even sometime mid June. It's moved forward a lot faster than I had expected and I would like to free up time for other projects once this one is done.

I hope you're joking. Lol
Great project! I'm sort of getting into alps right now but this might push me off the deep end. I'm kind of curious about the layout support. You mention split space support but that the case will only support one layout. Does this not include split space? Is split space only limited to the PCB?
On the subject of the PCB - would it possibly be compatible with the M65? I think there might be issues with the USB port, but it would be cool to see how AEK caps look on that board as well.

There will be two top chassis designs, each with their respective layout (single vs split spacebar).
As for compatibility with other chassis, I cannot guarantee anything since I don't own them to test-fit or measure.
The board looks amazing. Too bad about the lack of QMK. I’m guessing you’re on Windows? On a Mac, there are no driver issues, and flashing takes less than a second. At least it does on the command line. I don’t mess with that hex file stuff.
Alright, so I had planned to launch this week but my computer decided to brick itself and I have a backlog of work that is starting to pile up. On top of that, I'm organizing things with factories in China and don't really have a proper internet connection.
Launch will most likely be moved over to early next week or so, depending on when I can get a hold of a proper internet connection and an iso for Windows.
Bump, any particular day this week? just cautious because recently not always on with emails.
Exciteddd :p
Also question ... is it limit to one per person?
Also might be worth noting, but final PCBs will be QMK as requested by a large number of people. PCBs will be fully assembled and not sold as blanks like in this pic. Not limited to one per person, but orders need to be placed separately. These will be packaged like SPFS (custom cut foam) so they will be shipped individually.

Wasn‘t able to find it in the thread after a quick search and just to be sure: Keycaps from the AEK I are going to work as well, right? Don‘t see a difference in the layouts..

I was more refering to the email list you automatically get subscribed to according to the order site. I thought that maybe an email would go out in the style of „hey, GB has concluded, cool see ya!“. :)
So was not refering to a specific email and was just wondering, if anybody received something like that.
No worries by the way, didn‘t mean to stress you, just wanted to check if such an email even already existed. :)Yeah, order confirmation I received of course.Did anyone already receive any email?

Packaging hasn't been sorted out yet. If I can't get custom cut foam and boxes sorted out in time, I'll be wrapping the hell out of these with thick foam sheets and then sending them out.

Love alps. But hard to find keycaps. You can easily find them on eBay and this buy already ended so you don't have to worry about finding caps.
Just one question: can a powder coat be applied over those defective cases to hide aesthetical deficiency?
Oof, 7075 life... :blank:
In as the original 50, not sure if I should get another of the now B-Stocks...
Signed up for some extras since I missed out on the original, are there any comparison photos between grey and silver?
I am personally not interested in alu 6 as we paid for 7. Please make thr current a and b stock available to original buyers first andngive us better photos.
Fcfs is unfair imo.
We already bought switches, keycaps etc...

I haven't had the chance to send out an email yet, but you'll have the option to either take one from the current run or one from the new run if you are part of the original GB. I can't gauarante that I will have any, if at all perfect ones in 7075 as the issue stems from the material that was used, but I'll try my best to make things work for everyone.
Just one question: can a powder coat be applied over those defective cases to hide aesthetical deficiency?
Yes, it's only the anodizing that's affected. Machining is perfect on these.
If you want to do a powdercoat, keep in mind the thickness of the powdercoat. Masking the switch cutouts is mandatory. Masking the faces that are hidden when the case is together is reccomended depending on the thickness of the powdercoat.
Cerakoate on the other hand is very thin, though for that, masking the switch cutouts is still recommended.
If anybody is having any experience with cerakoting and thinks my decision is wrong, please warn me before it's too late. :D
Just one question: can a powder coat be applied over those defective cases to hide aesthetical deficiency?
Lunar uses 0.1mm tolerances for lid-chassis fit, so Cerakote should be fine.
Powdercoat usually ranges in the 0.3mm thickness zone, so I'd advise against it.
What is the material difference between 6 series and 7 series aluminium? Does it affect heaviness, feel or durability?7 series emphasizes hardness/durability and is marginally more heavy. Sound will be higher pitched.

Whelp this is unfortunate news. I personally am not married to the idea of 7075, but it was nice. Is there a chance that if we opt for the newer version that we receive a refund for the difference in material costs?

5 series is a softer alloy. Anodizes more easily and more evenly. Sound will be lower pitched.
6 series is a middle-of-the-road kinda option. Feel will change very little, if at all because of the 4mm plate between the material options. In terms of price, switching between each alloy shouldn't affect price very much if at all since I saw a difference of around 3 dollars per unit going from 6 to 7 series in the initial run of lunar.

Okay, so basically I won't feel that much of a change from 7 series to 6 series if I am not that sensitive and/or know well about the aluminium. Yeah I don't want to do re-ano or cerakote(I don't even know how to or who to ask) so do what you have to do, just make sure the finished product is up to your original goals.
So then a discounted A-stock from this run is going to be of better material than what the 50 original GB members payed $350+ for? I really don't like that.
Please let us know when emails go out forbuying in on b-stock options. My email is pretty diligent about spam foldering emails. So if I see something there I'll be sure to double check.
Also when you say "soon" do you mean like in the next day or two or in a month or so? (Wondering if I should pick up another board as a project if this will take a month.... Then I can buy that one and then save up money for this. :) )
I've come to terms that things are what they are. Any idea how much you plan to refund the original GB participants if they opt to keep the defect boards? If it at least mostly offsets the cost of getting it cerakoted, I might consider that if I can find a local shop willing to do it. That said 6 series is still good, and I could do that too. Just kind of bummed. My advice is probably useless, but maybe you could see who Rama used to manufacture the M60A? I just got mine today and its is absolutely flawless. Honestly, the best machining and anodization that I've observed in awhile.
Just a few moments ago I was talking to a guy who runs a private gun shop here in Croatia. I told him I'll have a piece of aluminium 7075 about 35 cm long with stains from a screwed up anodization proccess that I would like to cerakote, and I wanted to know what does he think will this work out (so far he was only doing guns in his cerkatoe oven).
He said, yeah, absolutely, just bring it here, no problems.
Now... when it comes to masking. Total thickness of one layer of cerakote can vary anywhere between 0.0125 mm - 0.0255 mm.
My conclusion is this is well within switch plate tolerances and I won't be doing any masking whatsoever because it would not have any real benefit, everything should be perfectly fine just just the way it is.

Hm, now when I looked more deeply into the matter, things seem quite a bit more complicated than I thought at first.
It turns out, if I want to do cerakote properly, I need to remove anodising layer first. And that's a requirement to ensure proper adhering to the aluminium surface.
Now, proper way to remove surface layer is sandblasting. Cerakote is expensive, somewhere in the ballpark of $100 per keyboard, but this makes it even more expensive, although I still haven't checked how much, I guess somewhere around $50.
What I wonder though is - can I maybe remove it manually to save some cost? Like, you know, take a fine water sanding paper and do it by hand?
This definately looks doable to me, but the real question is - how thick in practical therms is the cerakote layer. Because if it's very thin, you will see scuffs from hand-sanding through the cerakote paint.
I just got the email. Are you really planning on using 5052 vs 6061 or 6063? To my knowledge no one else has used that alloy before. While it might anodize well, I'm concerned it might be too soft.
Just received the email and replied.
In the email it was noted that some of the cases had been re-anodized. What % of the total cases were redone and what's the effect of re-anodizing on tolerances of the case?
What would we do about the right shift if we happen to get a b-stock case? Do you have extras that we can buy?
What would we do about the right shift if we happen to get a b-stock case? Do you have extras that we can buy?
I might have extras set aside. What I'll most likely do is that I'll put the ones from the original run up for sale and just have new ones made for the next batch of cases.
Should we have gotten a reply after confirming that we would like to keep the 7075 cases? Not sure if you are just sorting the responses or my reply didn't get through.I also didn't get a reply, wouldve been easier to use google sheets..

Did all participants got an e-mail? Cause I didn't get any.
I received my email, but I'd like to know if it would be possible to see some nice pictures of the already made cases. I'd like to keep the stronger aluminium but only if the anodising is not really bad. Some lines or shades wouldn't bother me if they are not easily visible
If the anodising is awful I will change to 5051 since I can't find any shop to cerakote it near me. Does anyone know someplace in or near Spain?

+1 for pics
I understand the priority is to get straight with the original GB participants. Was the status/protocol for people who were not part of the original GB but who wish to purchase a case? Hoping to get one when the time comes.
How are you going to prioritize the B-Stock quality levels to those in the original GB wanting one? By original order number or reply sequence to the email?
By the way thanks for making good of a bad situation and appreciate the communication. :thumb:
Got my 1.75u command key today. Hope I can put it to good use :thumb:

My order got mixed up and he sold out hah
how can I join the list for the B stock availability? I would like to get one...If you're not in the GB, fill out the extras form. There's an option at the bottom which asks if you want an email once they're available.

If you're in the GB, then email me with your order number saying that you want to pick from the available cases.
any news on this?
Not sure about bstock process still. I filled out the form. Just wait to see?
Is there an estimate on the timeline for the remanufactured set? Last I saw was Q1/Q2.
As of right now, looks to be the end of Q2. Going to be paying them today and should have a sample from them before CNY. Not sure how long production will take with them, but from other boards that were made there, looks to be a little longer than the old factory.
Also might be worth noting, but final PCBs will be QMK as requested by a large number of people. PCBs will be fully assembled and not sold as blanks like in this pic. Soldermask will also be white and not green.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/5cS6YJY.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/ob3VYSo.jpg)

Regarding the PCB, is it possible to fit hotswap sockets into the switch holes like the Alps PCB projects of lfkeyboards?
Is there any ETA for the resin shifts as the order is waiting on them?
Any word on the expected timeline for those who opted to go with the A/B stock cases?

Ok, any updated on resin 1.75u shift coming in stock? (Will there be extras and if so, when would they be available?)

What switches will people be using on theirs?
I’m new to Alps anything, so suggestions would be great. I only have dampened alps due to an old AEK I have. I read I could linearize them if wanted, but I’m not sure if that would be wise. I like both linear and tactile switches, so this will be a tough decision.

Does that include orders for those in the original GB who opted for A/B stock?
Edit: Oops, meant to quote the post right above mine.
Where do they ship from?

I'm new to the Alps game too, and got some nice enough oranges because I generally prefer tactile, and they are easier to get. They are getting ultrasonic cleared and dry-lubed.

Make sure you paper-mod them. Cut little squares out of paper, and slip them in between the housing and tactile leaf. Makes for more consistent tactility, and eliminates any "double click noises" on the downswing.

As a quick counter note, I personally highly recommend you look up the sound differences for click modded vs not click modded. Personally I really regretted doing it to mine much prefer the stock orange sound.
I received my Lunar today and assembled it -- it's absolutely gorgeous, by the way :^). Is there some information/documentation anywhere on how in particular it should be programmed? I know the firmware is QMK. Plugging it in, keypresses don't do anything, though it's recognized in QMK Toolbox as an ATmega microcontroller.https://goo.gl/C5HVrJ
Do you have a link for an in depth paper mod guide. I have yet to start customizing alps switches and would feel more confident watching someone else do it first.

Small update but I've recieved the sample for the new factory. It looks fantastic so I've moved forward and started production. They will have the materials before CNY but will start machining and finish everything else right after.
Extras of the resin shifts will be made available when they arrive at the end of next week.
As for original orders with resin shifts, those will be going out at the end of next week or the beginning of the week after next if you have a case from the first run.

I got my pcb in the mail the other day and flashed the lunar.hex file via qmk toolbox. I tested every switch, and they all work except the caps lock key (D31) and right Alt key (D62). Were these keys not programmed into the keymap file or do I have a bad pcb? I have it plugged in for testing, nothing has been soldered yet. :confused:I've seen caps typically be overridden to function, and r alt be alt grave (+ $= €). Open up switch hitter and see?

Do you have any pics of the shifts. Like a prototype?
Will this set of matias stabilizers work? I completely forgot about stabs tbh.
https://matias.store/products/stabilizer-and-hook-set (https://matias.store/products/stabilizer-and-hook-set)
Make sure you have the stabilizer wire for the space bar though, the Matias kit won't come with the correct length for the AEK (6.5u). You won't be able to use the larger costar looking stabilizers in that kit either, but i believe it has enough of the smaller wire clips that you should be ok.Good call, I only have that same matias set so now I need to find a 6.5u wire.

Just wondering when these will be up. :)
Has anyone who already got their case made a typing sound video? Very interested to hear the acoustics, a lot of people complain about the sound of Alps in modern, metal cases but I've also heard a few really nice sounding ones on youtube.
So I got mine B stock board. It does not look nearly as bad as I expected. I am very happy with it. Is there any way I can get one of those 1.75u resin keys?

There's been a small delay due to an issue with the stems.

I received mine as well. The ano issues are definitely visible but machining is great! Should be perfect after cerakoting it.Got mine back from the cerakoter tuesday and built it with green alps. Absolutely loving it and the gray I got looks fantastic.

How did you get your hexfile. When I go to config.qmk.fm/#/aio3/lunar/layout there ar no available layouts to create a hex of.

i see a few people have cerakoat'd their cases, can i ask how much people have been paying for that?Pretty sure it's about $35. Check out Tysons cerakoting service thread in the artisan section.

I got quoted at $150 from a local high-end gun shop. Obviously I passed on that.
Hi,Im in a similar situation, would be good to have an email to contact!
I'm in the original GB (and went for a re-machined case) and need to change my shipping address for my orders.
I looked around the Switchplate Peripherals site, but couldn't find contact info.
Anyone have an email address that I could use?
Many thanks in advance!
Any updates to share? Things still on track for late March ship date?

Still on track for late march. They're anodizing right now. Should be done by the end of the week.
Still waiting on resin shifts. May need to order more PCBs depending on if more of them sell from the ones that I have one hand ATM, though, those are quick.
Resin shifts came in today. They look fantastic. Pics to come when I have some time.
New batch of Lunars landing this Friday. I'll need about 3 weeks to process, pack and ship as I also have midterms and work to attend to. All packaging is with me so no wait on that.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/4QEHA5g.jpg)

To people who have cerakoted - has it taken out most/all of the imperfections in your cases?Depends on the level of imperfections. Its a pretty thin coat so scratches, dings, pitting is a no. My case only had anodization issues and the cerakoting completely fixed the issue.
Anyone interested in picking up my spot?
an update of the (presumably) received lunars would be appreciated! :DI'm very eager for an update too! I'm very much looking forward to seeing how things turned out :).
Printed out packing slips and did a quick visual QC as I unpacked them today. Will be working on getting as many packed as I can tomorrow and shipped out on Monday.

Small update but some things came up with school and work and I wasn't able to get things packed and completed. I'm going to be working through some today and then hopefully the rest on Friday. So far, all of the cases are pretty much perfect.
I'm going to be shipping them out all at once and doing the shipping labels in one batch so if things go to plan, should be out sometime next week.

Just checking, should I have received some sort of tracking information btw?I haven't yet either. I don't think he's shipped the remanufactured units yet. He's probably still busy with real life stuff, hope everything is okay.

Great news! For split space you would need a second left shift. There's a guy on ebay that sells individual AEK caps if you do need one.
I guess I'm a tad late, but I wanted to make sure about this. With the split spacebar option and a resin cast right shift already bought, do I only need 1x AEK keycap set? Because I think in that case I would lack the left "spacebar". Can anyone confirm me this? I think I can use the long 0 key in the numpad, but I'm not sure about that.
Thanks!

Are there going to be more PCBs? Says oos and I’m interested in a b/c stock case.
Once the remaining kits for CONUS have been received, I wil restock the Lunar PCBs on the website for purchase with b-stock boards

Realized that I haven't updated this lately.
Nearly everything has been boxed and sorted. There are still about 10-12 outstanding orders have been boxed and are only waiting on ESD bags since the factory didn't ship the new batch of PCBs in individual ESD bags this time around.
If you have not gotten a shipping confirmation yet, you are one of the few who are waiting on ESD bags. Those are set to arrive tomorrow. Will pack over the weekend and get labels sorted out for shipping on Monday or Tuesday.
If all goes well, this GB will wrap up on schedule and I will have 4 or 5 extra A-stock kits left. Will be bundling these with PCBs and resin shifts at a few dollars more than GB price.
Again, B-stock kits are still available for anyone who is interested. Once the remaining kits for CONUS have been received, I wil restock the Lunar PCBs on the website for purchase with b-stock boards.
Edit: I'm wrapping up the semester at school and working through both of the Southpaw GBs as well as working another job atm so I will not be the most responsive with emails this week. I'll try and get to them at the end of every day. Thank you for understanding
Should I be worried that I haven't received any sort of shipping confirmation yet?
Yeah, I got smacked with a $40 import fee for Canada :/ the pitfalls of not ordering from China hahaha
Also, some new pictures since I have yet to post any of the new stock that came in from the new factory.
The quality is immaculate. Perfect CNC, perfect anodizaiton. Super even and not a trace of aluminum grain. Alright, save for the board mentioned right above, all units are shipped. GB is complete.
There will be 4 or 5 extra a stock units that I will put up soon. They are all grey and configured with a standard spacebar compatible top. They will be bundled into kits; Case, PCB, resin shift and hardware. $525 shipped anywhere in the world.
Edit: plenty of b-stock still available. Will restock PCBs on the site soon.

Are there extra PCBs and B-stock still available?
I too am interested in this.
Anyone know the dimensions of this keyboard? Looking to have a custom sleeve made for it.
After some time off, I finally managed to finish my build...
Lunar A-Stock, with Salmon Alps, Sprit 55g springs, 205g0 on stabs, band-aid mod, Dry PTFE lube (stems)+Tribosys 3204 for a thockier sound (shell) combination on all switches.
I can definitely vouch for a Lunar now, the case quality and sound is simply stunning, indeed as it has been said several times here : very deep and thocky.
I think i went a bit crazy on this one because i tried 3 possible switch/sound damp/lube combination before settling on what was my endgame Alp keeb. 3 weeks later i can say that i'm happy with it :)
First I tried a full Blue Alps set and couldn't bare the click in a working environment. So I desoldered and benched some Orange vs Salmon, but my heart finally settled for Salmon which ended up being closer to my personal taste because of a cleaner original condition.
I ultrasonic cleaned everything, band moded the stabs and put a sound dampener foam on the back of the case to get rid of the small metallic echoing.
I still need to find a better profile for the right row keycaps but that's another story :)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/tOfcdTJ.jpg)

Looked through the album and was wondering, how close does the color of Lunar come to the grey Macbook? I want to get an idea of how well color matching to pantone codes work.

Since PCBs are out of stock I am curious does an SMK65 from LFkeyboards work in this case? I am considering buying a B-Stock but it is sort of pointless without a PCB.
I saw that v2. Any idea when it might happen?
Lunar v2? What are we talking about here :P
A couple of my screws got stripped and I don't want to put them back in(fear of not getting them out again) what are the specs for the screws, so I can order some off eBay, or get them at a local hardware store? :)
The look like m2 and ~8mm length (thread length). If so I can order some black ones from here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Metric-M2-M2-5-M3-M4-Black-Oxide-Allen-Hex-Head-Socket-Cap-Screw-Bolt-DIN912-/221815401140?varId=520684671916&txnId=2266949460012
Just waiting for confirmation. :)
V2 is super sexy. :)
Well that’s stunning. So is that a custom mixed color?
What did you do to the anodizing before cerakoting?Well that’s stunning. So is that a custom mixed color?
It is! Tyler of Ceraclack worked with a shop to mix it up. Here's their Discord: https://discord.gg/EZDgZa
Can't wait for my B-stock to arrive so I can coat it...

Is the PCB still in stock? I put in an order and it was canceled after a few days without any explanation. Sent email weeks earlier about PCB compatibility and never got a response. Really don't want to be left with a case (which is gorgeous, by the way) with no compatible PCB. I checked my SMK65 and it looks like the bottom row wouldn't be compatible. :(

The site shows the PCBs in stock, but I'm sure that's where you placed your order.
reconsiderit responds more quickly on ai03's Discord (takes a week vs. an unknown amount of time on GH), you can check there: https://discordapp.com/invite/qA5JD9y

Thanks! Decided to sell the case, though, and go with the ASK55 group buy instead. All the stuff I need to finish the Lunar build is getting delayed, and I think I probably should be going something with a plastic plate and/or body for better sound with blue Alps (or at least I hope it will sound better). Gorgeous case, though.
Me too.
Is there an official lunar II IC page up yet ??
