(RAMA WORKS x Invyr) Aluminium Keycaps SA Row 3 [Shipped!]
« on: Sat, 13 August 2016, 23:30:17 »
The buying period is now over. Thanks to all who participated

Greetings,

After much hard work I am finally able to offer you guys Aluminium Row 3 SA keycaps. It was extremely difficult to get at this price so I hope you enjoy.

The groupbuy will be run over here: http://www.gb.mech.market/?product=aluminium-keycap-group-buy

I am currently based in Australia so shipping costs are based off that. It's a $13 flat rate World wide + $0.35 per 7g. This means if you order 50 caps shipping will be $30.50 ( 13+(0.35*50)=shipping ) if you live in Australia, however, $10 flat rate is offered.

The MoQ is 100 caps. It is currently 259/100

The timeframe for shipping will be definitely before Christmas. The Order will be placed as soon as the GB is over. It will then take 2-4 weeks for manufacturing. Once manufacturing is complete I will receive the caps. Package them and send them off to you guys.

  • It is $4.99USD per cap. This is a great improvement over what usually would cost $20.
  • The caps are low tolerance milled, meaning that each and every cap should be very similar.
  • The caps are lightly sandblasted
  • The caps are also anodised (clear) to protect from wear.
  • 1u size
  • 7g in weight each
  • Row 3 SA Profile
  • Caps are blanks

A Video of the prototype caps can be found here

I hope you enjoy them and feel free to ask away.

A message from KingRama
Designed by RAMA – www.rama.works.

NOTE: This is not a release of an official RAMA cap, but a collaborative effort between ZISB(Invyr) and RAMA to bring to the community low cost SA profile key caps. This is separate from the work that RAMA produces out of RAMA WORKS and will differ in its presentation and packaging.

also for the warning/note:

Unfortunately, not all Cherry MX Stems are made equal. The stem cross for each switch type vary heavily. You will find that the precisely dimensioned RAMA SA 3 (WHITELABEL) will fit perfectly on some switches, and very loosely on others.

In the event of a loose fitting cap, place a piece of tape across the stem and push onto the switch. This will act as a shim to fill the gap between the cross and the stem.

That's as good as I could get it. Otherwise it would be $2000 with most manufacturers.  :(

That sucks, I'd be tempted to go for it if it were more like $200.

Hey man, I talked to you briefly over at reddit, but I'm curious if I buy a few caps, could I arrange for my orders to be un-anodised? (from the Reddit thread, these were to be anodised but the oxide layer will not be dyed i.e. just clear anodise).

Asking as I would like to try and get a few and find a local coating shop to anodise them in different colours to match the SA sets I have, and I'm not sure if caps can be re-anodised without abrading away the factory-anodised layer.

Let me know!  :thumb:

Theres definitely a chance, however it is much more expensive to mill and manufacture titanium.

Hey man. I will have a quick chat with my manufacturer and see if some can just be set aside. It shouldnt be a problem since anodising is usually last.

Okay I had a chat and that's no problem at all! Just PM me when you have placed your order and the quantity ordered (just to confirm) and I will leave a note for the manufacturer.

Really like these, but I don't really like SA.  Any chance of them happening in Cherry profile eventually?

Could show you in person if you want :) Or come around to whenever me and a few other Melbourne GH'ers meet up :D

Yep I'm in Melbourne, well, SE Suburbs anyway. Didn't realise there was a Melbourne GH group - details? Would be keen to come along at some point. I have a newborn to contend with right now though, so spare time is scarce. Anyway, I ordered a few of these though, so if timing is right I'll grab em at the next meet, so you don't have to post em.

Yeah I'm in SE as well!

Not exactly a group, but I just meet up with a few of the members every now and then, I'll let you know if something comes up! We just hang out together more than anything, but we always like showing things we got off :P

Oh, I'm not actually shipping them, I just designed these for ZISB, so they're entirely his product. It differs a bit from the caps I produce myself.

The buying period is now over. A great thanks to everyone who participated.  ;D

Payment will be made to the manufacturer within a week. ( Transferring money takes time)

From there it will be a 3-4week manufacturing time.

I will keep you updated!

Update Time!

To maintain complete transparency I am sharing with you everything that happens in regards to the GB:

Well thats the last time I will be using paypal

After many calls back and forth between them I finally got an email from paypal that they are shutting down my business account due to "Excessive Risk". They refuse to tell me what is the risk and this was pretty much random, I woke up to it on Saturday morning as surprised as anyone would be. All my details had already been verified etc. So now I must wait until February until I can withdraw the rest of my balance.

DO NOT STRESS, IT WILL NOT EFFECT THE GROUP BUY
I am no Ivan, despite whatever happens, customers come first and you will get your caps on time. I just thought that it would be best to let you guys know  :thumb:

I should be shipping off orders by the end of September

Yes, I just have to wait the 180 days first, but it wont interrupt the group buy in anyway. Kinda pissing me off, but what can you do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Like paypal doesn't really shut down an account, it just limits it so I cant do anything with it. I will be able to withdraw remaining funds in February but thats it.

I'm seriously in shock. I've heard about BS like this, but I've never really seen a recent instance of it. I'm shocked they didn't try and shut me down while I was collecting for 7bit. I love their arbitrary behavior and enforcement.

I'll take some pictures when I am home for everyone. I will send out caps ASAP, Auspost estimates 11 business days from the day I send it.

Pictures should be up in roughly 4 hours.

I think this is how those people who paint themselves silver and panhandle in parks got their start.

Allow me to be cryptic and assert that there will be more aluminum in the future, that will be of interest to those who are interested in this sort of thing.

No it shouldn't be a japan post. Everything was shipped on the 11th, so I would expect it at around 11 business days... so around the 25th is when you should be getting it.

Mine arrived today :>. Here's a crap photo of them on my Filco:

They're a little less blindingly shiny in person, heh.

Overall: They're damn nice. The sound, feel, and heft of them are all amazing, infinitely nicer than the cheap zinc metal caps you can find around.

I do have some slight gripes, in that the anodizing isn't quite perfect: there's some definite surface colour/visible texture changes and banding in places, but it is only visible at certain angles & lighting conditions and doesn't affect the tactile texture, so not a big deal. One of the texture changes is a thin band around 1-2mm up from the bottom of the caps, which is present on each of the four I have... I actually kinda like it, as it adds some character to them, but annoyingly it is much less noticeable on one of them than on the other three.

Keycap wobble is more than GMK but about the same as other SA R3 caps, although it does feel a tad more noticeable due to the significantly greater cap weight. I'm OK with it.

They'll probably end up on my Duck Black Bird once that arrives and gets built.

Hey there, Cheers for the review.

I'm really sorry about the anodising on that Cap, I tried to sort out everything but since it's only at an angle it's easy to miss some.

I can send you out a replacement if you would like.

In the future I will be moving away from my current manufacturer, although they were able to hit the desired Price point, they were a fair bit dodgy.

The only issue with this however is that everyone else was around $10 per Cap, so I am not really sure what to do, bit I think quality should be more of a concern.

As for the wobble, it's just the profile and weight. If it were, say, DSA there would be significantly less issue. I'm considering a fully custom profile in the future to eliminate this issue.

There are definitely some tough decisions I have to make, but I will ultimately persevere.

Nah, don't worry about it. Like I said I'm pretty happy with them, and the anodizing difference is really only noticeable if you're staring closely at the cap while angling it back and forth under a bright enough light.

As for the wobble, it's just the profile and weight. If it were, say, DSA there would be significantly less issue. I'm considering a fully custom profile in the future to eliminate this issue.

Yeah it's not overly wobbly or anything, just thought I'd mention it as I've had some metal caps in the past that were spectacularly bad on this front. Bad milling tolerances on the stem make a lot of difference to wobble, but these seem pretty great on that.

Hello! I have two quick questions:

1. Are these the hybrid topre/mx stems that are circular which fit both switches?
2. Will there be another group buy for these?

Yo,

1. These are designed for MX. They will 'fit' into a topre stem, however they wont really function properly, although I do belive you can jury-rig it to function with bluetac or something silly like that.

2. Maybe however I have a significant pickle: I can get a simmilar price again, although the quality wont be as high as I want it to be, or I could raise the price a bit and have a significantly better cap quality wise.

If there is anything else let me know :)

Does that mean you will organize another buy within a reasonable timeframe? Like within a year or so?

Hmm unfortunate, looked like it was 100% the hybrid stems. Oh well haha, I doubt they would have sounded good on my HHKB anyway.

And hmmm, why make them more expensive? The pics people have shown seem to look great and people satisfied? I think if you make them any more expensive than $5 each, it becomes prohitively expensive for us trying to assemble 60% boards/plancks/ergos out of them and not just buying only a few novelties. In fact, I'm not sure how outlandish this sounds to most people, but I would most certainly be in for a 60% blanck keycap set in all metal. Whether you do it or someone else, seems like something that is extremely exotic and could get a nice following :)

Ready to hit the town.

Yours doesn't have the line at the bottom of the cap?  3 of mine have a line 3/4 down the cap that goes all the way around.  I actually thought it was part of the design.  Anyone else have that?

Hey Dom, PM'd ya.

It turns out some of the caps had that issue and I didn't catch it what so ever.  :'(

Mine have the lines, maybe about 90% of them. I thought they are part of machining process, like injecting spots with plastic keycaps.

Yeah alot of them came out like that unfortunately. It was to do with the anodising process it seems. If anyone does have complaints about them I still have some leftover that don't have any marks on them if you would like to swap them out.  :-*

I know see two comments from other folks in the Bay Area having received theirs... I'm getting worried now. That wasn't a cheap order.

 I hope it gets there soon! It might be a bit longer for you though, everyone else got it in like small satchels whereas your order was in a decent sized box.

Well, none yet, but theoretically 50. Probably going to live on an ortholinear, but the other option to explore is to use them as alphas.

Problem solved.

I ran in to my postal worker on the way home, she flagged me down and handed it to me. I can't really understand her very well, but something about they switched her route for a couple days, and I imagine something about confusion about packages. (She's great, I just usually have no idea what she's talking about.)

Anyway, got 'em. On a scale of 1 to Mr. T, They're almost Mr. T. Pics later.

I just received mine, all 4 have the line you are talking about. A bright line roughly 4/5 down the cap. I don't understand why.

Yeah mine have the lines near the bottom too but I don't mind. For this price point, I'm perfectly okay with this.
I think it's important for the keyboard community to have affordable artisan keycaps; its the best way for us to grow and increase the diversity of offerings.
