You asked for it, we delivered.
Introducing Project Zealios - 62g gold plated springs in an exclusive custom made Purple "MX Clear" stem. No ErgoBrown Gateron bull**** (cough). This is the real deal. Along with the project was a custom made transparent switch bottom housing to maximize LED lighting. Switch will be compatible with 4-pin RGB LEDs (not pictured). The purple stems have the tight stem cross removed from the original MX Clear stems. No more accidental switch breaking! Yay!

Im gonna guess Zeal is making his own type of switch. Gateron tops or anything like that isnt worth the hype that this is building, so I think that zeal is trying to make his own.

Almost looks Alps-ish to me.

Idk if its just me, but I really can't envision a cherry style switch in that picture so far to be perfectly honest.
I get how people see the lower part as a LED tho, since it looks kinda translucent with what might cathode and anode inside...
So assuming it does look mx compatible switch like, and I'm just the only one who fails to visualize that xD,
couldn't it also be a pcb mounted 'cherry style' stabilizer? (except for maybe the LED)
Since some people guessed Zeal is making his own switches, (which to me seems even harder then designing stabilizers)
the options for stabilizers seem to be significantly less then for mx switches, (and costar and cherry both seem to have their issues)
and the fact that Zeal has a history with his gold plated stabilizers, it doesn't seem too far fetched maybe.
I don't really believe thats what it is tbh, but it would fit the mx compatible stem analogy...
And it would definitely be awesome to see a stabilizer that manages to combine crisp non-mushy feel and easy of changing caps I guess! =)
-
Zeal is hyping for an MX activated dildo.
-
Zeal is hyping for an MX activated dildo.
At least Halverson will not be disappointed.
-
Kinda looking like a matias switch
I agree. I think the "90 degree" tab might actually not be a shadow from a cherry cross stem, but a dark spot shining through the hollow center of a Matias stem.
-

The picture so far is definitely not an Alps switch, not unless Matias changed their looks radically recently (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Matias_switch). Given the red in the original picture, there is a chance that the picture so far is just unveiling old switches (Gateron Clears) and the new switches, Matias linear switches (which have red stems), will be unveiled later.

I can't even figure out where the picture so far fits into the pixelated image in the OP.

I guess you'd have me half converted to cup rubber that way.
My bet is still on a giant MX compatible dong.

mass produced MX-compatible Topre switches would definitely be one of the great milestones in keyboarding history. i wonder if HHKB and Leopold are ready for when that day comes

Your asking for a round peg to be put in a square hole, topre switches (I hesitate to call them switches as they aren't discrete switches like mx switches are) by design are entirely different than mx switches.

I think if there truly was a market for ergo clears cherry would make them, it's all mostly hype.

The two are fundamentally different, but there's really no reason you couldn't put a single rubber dome, spring, and capacitive pad inside a discrete switch casing.

I can't see how it wouldn't be a switch, unless Zeal's having us on (https://youtu.be/nLHNJ7vgbYo?t=8s).

Whatever it is, DrHubblePhD mentions that it will definitely be a part of the Mira TKL group buy. So it's got to be a switch.

I find it amusing that no one even knows why we're guessing what this thing is. It has not been established as a contest/giveaway, where the winner would get the item in question; there is no such incentive. Why the hell are we guessing? Why are we letting Zeal win? Let's fight the power and boycott the nonsense. >:D

Good luck getting that to work. Even with your powers :)

100 pieces must mean it's a much bigger picture. As far as we know, the switch could be a decoy and it's part of a much larger image, with plates or something as well. I wouldn't put it past Zeal :)

There is a little more hype left that you guys haven't figured out.
This last bit that he hasn't revealed is much more than just "reddit relevant".
I'll leave you to figure out the hype. :thumb:

Outside of the fact that it looks to have a gold spring inside with gold contacts, I'm not getting the hype...unless there's an SMD LED module in the post in the middle.
Soooooo

Switch has LED in the middle and lights up when it's depressed.
-
Could this be the famous RGB switches with LED inside the switch similar to that from the Corsair RGB keyboards?
whoops nub posted the answer :D

Is that really what this is? If it's an RGB LED where are the 4 extra leads?

Zealio is love~ Zelio is life ~
I've got one. I've felt it. I've touched it. I've used it.
I love it~ For a factory new switch, it's dank, son. Beats any factory new MX switch.
I'm hype. Sign me up for an entire batch, plox.
I took these photos earlier tonight~ Sorry for some blur~ They were rushed :(

I'm with you, mane. I don't own a single backlit keyboard because I honestly don't really care for them. However, a well EVENLY lit keyboard under the keycaps would look dayum fine. Even if not backlit, these clear switches would look mighty fine too.
Neato!!!

Better be gateron for optimal girth

I would want some of these, but only with Clear switches which Gaterons do not have an equivalent for.

Those LEDs just cycle through all of the colours unfortunately.
I don't know of any 2x3x4 or 1.8mm LEDs which allow you to control the colours.

Ahaaa! So it was RGB :P really interested in your project Henry. Will drop by here often !

I think the point of the video was not the RGB led but infact the totally see through transparent switch housing.
-
Someone asked this earlier, do you program the color or they change somehow? Not really into keyboards that light up like Christmas trees.

This is awesome! I'll try to get a spot for Mira and hoping to be in the first 57. I am also hoping that Winkeyless remembers my suggestions of having a better controller for their boards. It would be nice if we can set any color we want for each RGB LED. Unfortunately, their current controller can't do this yet. Only few different RGB modes and just the on board's led.

AFAIK the RGB channels on these switches are not individually addressable, so they really won't help you towards your goal of fully-customizable backlighting.

Yay!

Nope it doesnt not. They are not the same thing. Mira will only support the usual single color 2 pin LED's the ones Zeal is talking about are full color range 4 pin LEDs.

USPS started being very helpful once I dropped the 1k insurance bomb. The board is boxed with 4-5in of foam on every side so I'm fairly sure that it'll be well protected.
Seriously though, I'm putting these switches in the board. They'll look great with the pink.

I remember seeing a glass PCB somewhere with moderately transparent traces so light could shine through. IIRC it was on some eng field trip 2ish years ago.

Not joking, actually. :)
Dell SK-8115. One at home, one at work. Pretty darn good for a rubber dome over membrane. I disassembled one for painting, and learned why I like these Dells. Slider (attached to keycap) in a channel over the rubber dome sheet. Under the domes are a pair of membranes, very much like what are in an IBM Model M.
I painted the one I use at home white. Now I just need to swap those green LEDs for blue ones.
Made new Dell thread here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=73999.0), so we don't derail Zeal's thread any more.

Very nice!
Questions:
1. Was anyone breaking their switches because of the tight stem on the clears? I didn't see any disadvantage to those fat stem crosses but I liked that it make me feel that my caps weren't loose (I've had some trouble with loose caps, maybe I got a faulty batch of browns), but I won't mind if the stem isn't fat if it doesn't have any advantage to it.
2. How is the stem different from stock stems apart from the other color and nonfat crosses? Are the sliders shaved like some people seem to do to supposedly make them smoother?
3. Is the housing made from different materials than regular MX switches? And if yes does that pose a problem? I know that Lastpilot mentioned that when he made a board with transparent housings on the switches he lubed the upper housing because it made for a more silent upstroke (this is not a problem with stock mx housing, lubing the upper housing is irrelevant).
-
I would like a lot of these.

1. Yes, it's a huge problem that's quite widely known. Especially happens on tight keycaps (GMK ABS, Gateron PBT, etc)
If you were using imsto keycaps, those are generally very loose keycaps. That may be why it felt "just right" on MX Clears.
2. It's the same other than the cross-stem. However, you can expect a smoother feeling that we all appreciate from Gateron. I'm not too sure what you mean by shaving the slider...that would make it rougher.
3. Slider is POM, housing is Nylon. Pretty much same materials as Cherry switches. I think the clear housing that Lastpilot used where from another manufacturer, that used a different more brittle material.
-
I am so excited for this! Thank you for making this happen Zeal!
Not just to find a pcb with the 4 pin socket! :)

QFT. Correct! Those were abostudio tops and were sort of loose and brittle. I haven't had any problem with the gateron tops, they've been really nice and I've done 4 builds with them. ^-^

Holy ****. This is brilliant. Going to pick up a heap of these for projects.

How much are these going to cost though?

I would also like to point out that these come with gold springs in them already, and with clear tops, so the higher pricing makes sense. I also missed the clear bottoms
-
I'm ready for this
-
Oh my god... COUNT ME IN.
-
I'm about to do a build- I'll take samples :D
No way I'm going to miss this GB.
-
So I'm a bit new here. What does this mean for the future, is this going to be available only withing a GB, or is it possible that a manufacturer would pick these up and put them in a keyboard?
In other words, how would I ago about acquiring a keyboard with these. I have 0 soldering skills and I don't wanna buy a random pcb mounted kb just to be able to open the switches and replace the spring (I prefer plate mounted) so ergo-clear is not possible for me.
Can I pay someone to make me one? :) I NEED more MX tactility in my life, browns are not enough.

Switches will likely be kept in constantly replenishing supply at Zeal's store and will only be sold officially through there and nowhere else.
I don't expect them to be picked up by any manufacturer so you would need to get someone to solder these in for you.
These switches have stock 62g springs meaning that they are already ergo clears.

Yeah, what Frosty said.
To add; PCB mounted switches turn into plate mounted with the snip of some clippers. The difference is just two tiny plastic legs that you can clip off. I only had highschool soldering experience from 10+ years ago and soldering up my first KB was one of the funnest things I've done in the past few years :D
-
oh my god
this means we can probably eventually have 60% boards with RGB ergo clears....

Thanks for the info. Yep, I understand these are already ergo clears, what I meant was if I could do it to a plate mounted board without desoldering I'd go that way, but since I'd need to desolder I can't do it. Well, looks like if these aren't picked up by a board manufacturer I will have to learn soldering either way. Time to learn a new skill :)

Welp! looks like i'm gonna need to start getting some money in my PayPal.....

2. It's the same other than the cross-stem. However, you can expect a smoother feeling that we all appreciate from Gateron. I'm not too sure what you mean by shaving the slider...that would make it rougher.
I'm sorry but I don't understand then, what is it that's different about the switch then that makes is smoother than stock cherry? Is it because of the springs ?

Newer / smoother / better made molds = smoother plastic parts that are made. If you've ever done some fancy chocolate art making, you'd know that layering melted chocolate on a shiny stainless bowl will result in a shiny chocolate semi-sphere on the inside. If the surface of the bowl was scratched up and matte, the chocolate would form a matte and rough surface.
Same concept goes to molds and injected plastic. The switch molds created today are newer and should be smoother than old Cherry molds that Cherry has reused for decades.
The surface finish of the metal leaf on Cherry/Gateron bottom housings could be different as well. The leaf plays a huge role in whether a switch feels smooth or not. There's a bunch of possible factors that could also lead to a smoother Gateron switch.

Will these switches have a high actuation point compared to cherry? For some reason that bothers me about all the other Gateron switches and, on paper, doesn't sound like my preference.

I'm using two Dell SK-8115's. One at home, one at work. I win. :))
I've long said if I were going to go back to "normal" keyboards it would either be the SK-8115 or the SK-8135. IMO they're some of the best rubber dome membrane boards.
As far as the actual topic at hand, are these "Zealio" switches made by Gateron? Can we expect a similar level of smoothness found in their linear switches except with the tactility of a Cherry Clear stem? If so, I can see myself ordering wayyy too many of these :))

Tactility is modeled after the Cherry MX Clear stem. Yes, Gateron and I partnered up to have these switches exclusively made for me.
I've decided to wait another week before receiving samples so Gateron could make the bottoms PCB mount (forgot to mention that when the tooling was being made...Oops). Sorry for the wait guys!

will the pcb bottoms work like cherry ones, or will they be like stock gateron
Edit: I actually only heard about this and never tried it. After trying it, they seem to work, sorry

Some aftermarket PCB manufacturers choose to make their PCB holes a tiny bit smaller for a snugger PCB mount feel. Due to manufacturing tolerances, this can sometimes make the Gateron PCB mount seem too tight. I've brought this issue up to Gateron as well, and they'll try to make the microfins a tiny bit smaller. However too small, and some PCBs may be too loose for the switches.

You can always ream out tight PCB holes. Makes more sense to keep the switches standard, as it's harder to add material to a switch bottom than to take it away from a PCB.

Agreed. Easier to make a hole larger, not smaller.

I don't know if this was asked but:
1. Are these pre-lubed in anyway?
2. Cherry mx switches had a little wiggle between the top and bottom halves. Gateron has less wiggle. How do these purple switches compare?
Thanks.
-

It will only come stock factory lubed on the legs like every other switch (both Gateron and Cherry). Lubing ergoclears is subjective, and everyone has their own tastes on where to apply lube, and how thick the lube should be. I've left that for the end users to decide and mod.
Given that these switches are manufactured by Gateron, you can expect the little to no wiggle room between the two halves.

would that make stickering these kinda useless? other than cosmetic i guess

Pretty much. You might even be adding unecessary stress to the housings by adding a film in between.

imo stickering is considerably more for aesthetics rather than the added rigidity, especially when stem wobble usually overshadows it's benefits anyway. it can even just be a thing to do if you're opening the switches anyway.
I've also just realised that I never thought to buy purple stickers before, because they wouldn't match any stems....

Sorry if this has been asked already and I'm sure it depends on how many switches are ordered but might there be a rough estimate of cost per switch on these? thanks Zeal!

How much are these going to cost though?
Can we expect them to be around the same price point of cherry switches or is it going to be significantly higher?
It will be priced higher than Cherry switches, but under $1. Pricing is still being finalized.

Don't know if anyone has asked this yet, but is the switch housing plastic durable? After ripping multiple stems through
AboStudio switch tops, I would hate to have that happen again with these.
-
Are there pcbs that support this pin layout or have controllers that can push these leds?
-

Gateron switch tops are miles more durable than the brittle abostudio ones. You don't have to worry about ripping the stems out. The purple stems don't have the cross-tightening stem mounts found on Clears, so there really isn't anything to worry about.

There isn't an aftermarket PCB that supports 4pin RGB LEDs yet (it's in the works). However these switches will still be backwards compatible with regular 3mm, 2x3x4mm, 1.8mm LEDs.

So, silly question maybe, but when you say these switches will be 4-pin LED compatible, you're talking about 4 thru-holes for the LED to sit on the top of the switch like normal LEDs?

OK, so the LEDs will still sit on the switch top, and not just shine through from underneath the clear body?

I thought for sure I read that somewhere on here. In that case that makes me pretty hype for these switches then. Sucks that I bought maybe 4 or 5 sets of 62g springs though, :))

Those types of LEDs are usually only sold to large keyboard OEM's in tens of thousands. I will be stocking them once a proper RGB LED PCB has been developed.

In the near term, these (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/2x5x5-Rectangular-tri-color-RGB-LED-4pins-Common-Anode-White-Diffused-Lens/800238_636417339.html) may be a little bigger and require bending the pins, but they work alright and are available in smaller quantities.

Yay!

Oh man.. Those purple stems are beautiful.. :thumb:

Very nice!
Questions:
1. Yes, it's a huge problem that's quite widely known. Especially happens on tight keycaps (GMK ABS, Gateron PBT, etc)
If you were using imsto keycaps, those are generally very loose keycaps. That may be why it felt "just right" on MX Clears.

No, cherry mx clear stems tend to hold on to certain keycaps tighter and when you aren't careful removing the keycaps you will pull the stem right out of the switch. In Zeal's reproduction switch in partnership with Gateron they have tried to leave off that aspect of the mx clear stem.

Samples have been shipped out. Hopefully receive it by the end of the week. If not, I'll receive it on Monday.
Once I receive samples and they've been sent out to testers, I'll be receiving their feedback. That process should take around a week. If everything's A-OK, GB will commence at the end of August. :)

I can't decide whether to continue with my current project (60%, already bought switches, leds, stickers, SIP sockets, springs) or ditch it and wait for this to drop...
Leaning towards the latter, because these are pretty sick.

It just occurred to me, is this the first time an MX Clear equivalent Gateron switch has been made?
-
Gimme GB naow!!!
Samples have been shipped out. Hopefully receive it by the end of the week. If not, I'll receive it on Monday.
Once I receive samples and they've been sent out to testers, I'll be receiving their feedback. That process should take around a week. If everything's A-OK, GB will commence at the end of August. :)

Any thoughts on producing a Gateron "MX Green"?
It already exists. I got a few samples fresh from their production line at the factory, but they were prototyping, and the spring weight wasn't right. I told them about it, so it should be fixed now. I can provide some pics later in the evening.
It just occurred to me, is this the first time an MX Clear equivalent Gateron switch has been made?
Yes. I worked & invested with Gateron to make the improved MX Clear stem. :)

So what will the Gateron Green switch weight be set at?

Zeal I really hope you're ready to be buried under the mountain of caps gateron's going to send you when this goes live. :))
-
So what will the Gateron Green switch weight be set at?
They should be similar to regular MX Greens. Gateron Greens weren't my custom order, and I don't have the final product on hand.

It just occurred to me, is this the first time an MX Clear equivalent Gateron switch has been made?
Well given Gaterons have only been popular for the lesser part of a year, the answer is yes. I think this is the first time MX Clear type switches have been available from anyone other than Cherry.
-
Whoa, purple clears is exactly what I didn't know I needed.
Really excited for this!

Wow, it's been a good while since I've dropped by this thread. :D
Amazing to see the progress. Would defo get some for a 60% I've been planning for awhile.
1 q though, will the stock springs be 62g or some other weight? :O
Am very excited! :D

Is there information on an expected price or is that a secret?
Sorry if this has been asked already and I'm sure it depends on how many switches are ordered but might there be a rough estimate of cost per switch on these? thanks Zeal!
How much are these going to cost though?
Can we expect them to be around the same price point of cherry switches or is it going to be significantly higher?
It will be priced higher than Cherry switches, but under $1. Pricing is still being finalized.
This is what has been posted so far.

Good question. The smoother slider may prevent the sticking issues some people have had with Ergo Clears.

Hey Zeal,
Just received a buckling spring keyboard today and while I love it to bits it's becoming apparent that maybe I'd want to try something stiffer. What spring would you recommend in the Purple Gateron to get it closer to MX Gray Tactile?
"Why not just buy MX Gray Tactile now?" --> because as I understand it it's the same stem as the MX Clear with a stiffer spring; something I want to avoid due to the fat stem.

This is probably crazy talk and I'll get laughed at but Ż\_(ツ)_/Ż Will it be possible to order the switches without the springs for a slight discount? I see "gold" so I have no idea how much of an effect it will have on price.

It wouldn't be possible to order the switches w/o springs, sorry. :( I guess for those spring swappers, you can always resell the springs inside?

Yes I'm sure some will want them - just won't know how to put a price on them :) Maybe I can find a keyboard assembler who will take them as a form of currency.

It would actually be really excellent if you sold all the parts to the switches separate. Taking switches apart to mod them is so annoying. Of course, figuring out how to do that without risking damages during shipping is a problem...but still, it would make them even more appealing to me. :thumb:

Hey guys, pictures incoming. I've been testing out some spring weights and how lubing affects these switches. There /may/ be a possibility that I'll be upping the weight to 65g due to the smoothness of the switches. It gives it a bit more kick and life when lubed!

Exciting!
Because of the smoothness, is there a potential that a <62g spring could theoretically be used, as it would be less prone to catching on the bump on the way up?

You'll get to pick from two options in the GB. Purple will be tactile, "milky white" (Gateron clear) will be linear.

What I'm trying to say is, that the Zealios seem to catch or not catch keycaps like any other Gateron MX clone (which personally never had trouble with in my usage).

From my testing, stock gateron (milky housing) switch tops as well as clear tops (one on the right) can sometimes catch on bottom row keys such as Ctrl, Alt, etc. when pressed on in the corner/off center. With the RGB tops, this does not happen at all!
There is a bit of modification on the guiders for the slider (top and bottom of the switch top), but I wouldn't be able to pinpoint tell you which one fixed the catching.

As the first (I think?) community-driven and community member-created switch, this is all so amazing. It's going to give people who always wanted ergos a chance to try them without having to go through the tedious switch tuning. I'm not sure that it'd be practical for me to buy these the first go around since I have enough vintage ergos left over for my next build (but I might for their RGB compatibility!).
Will there be a round 2 group buy or is our only hope to get a lower price on these through this launch GB? Thanks for all your work put into this community, Zeal!

It'll depend on demand. I do plan on keeping these switches in constant stock, but if the demand is high, I don't see a problem with running multiple re-runs of the GB. :)

I am so jumping in on this GB when it is available. These along with the TK-78 are gonna make a beautiful DD for me.

Not sure if this has been asked yet, but is there any chance of selling just the sliders (sans spring and housing) for a smaller price? The sliders will fit in Cherry/Gateron housings no problem, but Gateron wouldn't want to be selling the sliders individually. They prefer manufacturing products as a "package".

Like I said, if the user thinks it's smooth enough, then by all means this will replace all the tedious work required to make ergo clears. But for the enthusiasts that want the best of the best, they'll open the switches up and lube em. :)

Yes but some typing will help wear down the stems as well. If these get put in an "end game" keyboard that is used 8-10 hours a day every day the results should be fairly close after a year or so.
I just think it is confusing to folks after hearing how smooth Gaterons are compared to their Cherry counterparts and yet people are still adding lube. Sounds similar to Chinese hot peppers - can't get enough I suppose. :)

I'm prepared to replace 2 keyboards worth of clear switches for these. My biggest complaint with clears has always been the scratchiness, if these are really that smooth I will be buying lots of them!
-
I will be excited to see how these compare to worn clears. They are currently my favorite switch
-
Will lube be available for purchase with this buy?
-
So what's the deal with the RGB LED compatibility? Four holes in the switch bottom? Do 3mm (or whatever) in-switch RGB LEDs exist? What else is required for full control of the "RGB" part, an LED driver and support baked into the PCB? Was the 4-pin LED pictured by Zeal, the ones he said he would be stocking after PCB support is added, a 1.8mm LED?

THIS^^^^ Very excited for these and will be buying some regardless of the outcome however due to gatetrons already smooth feel I'm very interested to see how these compare to a nicely lubed cherry ergo with identical weighted springs.
I'm not sure if comparing a new switch to worn clears would be exactly fair(unless it was a worn zealios switch) but I'm interested all the same
Zeal or any other reviewers out there care to lube some zealios up and compare them to there cherry ergo brethren !
Thanks everyone involved !!!!!

A special PCB will be designed to support RGB LEDs. No, the 4-pin LED I showed in the previous post is not an 1.8mm LED.
1.8mm leds look like this (http://www.newmodellersshop.co.uk/images/miniture-1.8-white-led.jpg)

Ok Class, time for some keyboard science. :))
When I first took this comparison shot, it appeared that Gateron Purples had less of an "indent" during resting position of the switch.
But I was telling myself it's the darker colour & lubricant giving off that illusion.
So.....Today I cut off a leg... A Cherry Clear leg. (Excuse the dust, it took around 30minutes to have the legs aligned. :( Lots of touching involved)
Crop:
Purposely moved the clear leg a bit back to compare the bump & slopes. Mind you, it's very hard to make fine adjustments by hand when you're dealing with fractions of a millimeter!
Crop (Oh my, look at those mini bumps on the clear stem :)))
In Conclusion, the slopes and bumps are the same. The plastic is just that much smoother that I will most likely be upping the weight to replicate "vintage" ergo clears.
Just for fun. Sorry, Cherry Fans.

I'm really liking the looks of those so far. Let us order them already!!! :P

Personally I would like to stick with the 62g weight, or even a lighter weight, to make it closer to Browns with a bigger bump. Would be great if both switch weights would be available, but not sure how feasible that is.
-
This thread needs less masturbation - more order taking.
-
I think sometimes a heavier spring results in a better feeling travel. I'm not talking super heavy or anything but 65-72g... in that range. you can really appreciate the smoothness. When it's too light the key bottoms out too easily and you can't really feel just how smooth it was. Just one man's opinion anyways. \_(ツ)_/Ż

Perhaps we could order the stem, housing and springs separately for those willing to have a different weight. Would it be doable Zeal?

Not sure if this has been asked yet, but is there any chance of selling just the sliders (sans spring and housing) for a smaller price? If so, how do you think they would fit in a Cherry/Gateron housing? I'll probably end up getting a bunch of these switches either way, but if I could save a buck I would.
The sliders will fit in Cherry/Gateron housings no problem, but Gateron wouldn't want to be selling the sliders individually. They prefer manufacturing products as a "package".

Thanks but then will gateron be shipping the switches with the gold plated springs or will Zeal perform the swap by himself? In the last case perhaps he can offer not to swap them and sell springs on the side so people could pickup the weight they'd want.

lol no Zeal ain't gonna swap each spring himself. Gateron has the springs.

Fair enough. I wonder if he could offer different spring weight for the buy but I guess it would be harder to meet MOQ then if there is one.

Without having felt them, I would lean toward sticking with 62g. When I was playing around with ergoclears I thought that spring weight gave the best feel. I'll pretty much trust whatever zeal decides though :thumb:

62g springs are the stereo typical ones for ergos and don't get me wrong I love that weighting however 65g and 67g are my faves. It's not much of a difference but I've found those to feel a little smoother with the increased weight. As strict said though I'll be happy with zeals choice! So much hype :thumb:

B3 = 67g stock Zealio
C1 = 62g lubed Zealio
C2 = 65g lubed Zealio
C3 = 67g lubed Zealio
A1 = Nope. Too light. Feels nice and smooth like a linear Gateron though
B1 = First time I tried a 62g Clear that wasn't sticky and didn't have any issues.
B2 = See above
B3 = Reminds me of my worn MX Clears at work. Well...at least the weight.
C1 = The bump feels more connected. Like it's one motion instead of two. Starting to convince me that previous 62g modded clears I've tried were a bust compared to this.
C2 = Might be my new favorite modded MX-mount "Clear" switch
C3 = Ugh I can't pick between this or C2
First thought I had was that all the modded MX Clears I tried were supposed to feel like this. Other than stock MX Clear and Panda Clears. 62g, 65g, and 67g never felt so good.
I'll do a better review later. I've got like 10 minutes of play time with these switches so far. I'm starting to feel more and more that Cherry MX is meh. Gateron and Greetech are becoming more interesting to me the more I play with them.

C1 - Agreed, feels like one smooth motion. No bumpy roads or drops. Perhaps a new replacement for vintage browns? (haven't tested v. browns myself)
C2/C3 - Exactly my thoughts on 65g vs 67g lubed Zealios. Very tough decision... May be favouring 65g a tiny bit more though.

I really like my lubed Panda Clears but I always thought they were a tad too heavy. How do these stack up?

Nice writeup. I definitely like lubed 65g the best from my tests, but would prefer to have 67g in my personal keyboard due to preferring 67g springs. 67g feels more like proper worn-in clears with a smoother, less pronounced bump.

Probably Cherry sticking with the tried and tested 6 or 7 standard switch types, and the newcomers experimenting with different options.
Large established keyboard manufacturers with established relationships with Cherry will most likely stick with Cherry, but smaller players might very well seek the Gaterons and Greetech switches to provide something new to their clients.

https://www.keychatter.com/2015/08/19/review-project-zealio-switches/
There are my initial thoughts after testing the switches out.
I was nothing but impressed with the switches. At the end of the day my favorite Cherry MX switch was greatly improved. The stems are indeed not as tight as Cherry Clears, so no more worrying about ripping the stems out when removing keycaps. They were all extremely smooth, without any grittiness at all. Also, purple!, 'nuff said.
As far as individual switches go (62g, 65g, 67g) I think it all just comes down to personal preference. There isn't a clear "best" switch of the lot. My personal favorite was by far the 67g switch though. It was the most refined feeling MX switch I've ever used. I wouldn't compare it to Topre directly, but as a huge Topre fan the 67g switch really stuck out for me. I will definitely be throwing those into my Mira.
The main thing really is that there was nothing about the switches that would make me hesitate on jumping in on the group buy for a few hundred of each right now. I had no issues with the switches or the Clear RGB tops at all. ZealPC, well done sir, well done :thumb:

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought 67g felt like it had a higher positioned bump and was reminded of Topre :))
Re: RGB Tops, they will come stock on Zealios. The test samples just didn't have them installed by default :-[ It also prevents catching on thicker caps such as GMK, etc.
Thanks again for sharing first impressions!

These initial impressions have convinced me. I'm in for at least 330 (67g non-lubed, if I had to choose now).
I can't wait.

Massdrop has a buy going on (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/gateron-switches?mode=guest_open) for Gateron switches right now. Three days left and it still hasn't hit the first tier. I wonder if everyone's holding out for Zealios?
-
A quick question: can I design my PCBs the same as before (standard cherry-mx pcb mount footprint) to use the Project Zealio? Or is there something I should make a note of? Gracias!
Thanks for making this happen Zeal!

Maybe. But they've also ran it every 2 or so weeks, and have probably worn the market out.

Yes, switch pins and dimensions will be exactly the same. The only thing that'll be different is RGB LED support. You don't have to support it, but the option is there. If you choose to just run regular LED traces, the switch can still support standard 3mm/2x3x4mm/1.8mm LEDs.

Yeah but it gets down to $24.99 at 100 units. That's a big difference if you can afford to wait.

I received my Zealios yesterday, and they seem to be just what we've been asking for. I will post my review after I've had a chance to build up my JD45 prototype with them. Unfortunately for you guys, that will be after I return from my vacation next week. Hope you guys don't mind waiting a bit, but I'll be off-forum for several days!
Loving those clear housings, though. I can see people buying these just because of the transparent housings! Having the choice of a ~65g linear stem and ~67g tactile stem will definitely be a boon for those of us who regularly had to perform switch mods to get those things before.

"Project Zealio" sounds a bit lame lame. Why name it after yourself? ^-^
Don't worry. I'm still going to dump my money on this. There's no way I'm not gonna try these!

Zeal, did they fix the PCB mount legs? I thought with Gaterons one had to file the legs a little to get them to fit. Thanks.

It would depend on the aftermarket PCB you purchase. Some board makers like to purposely make the PCB mount support pin holes smaller to give the switches a tighter fit. I tested them on Duck PCBs and they were a perfectly snug fit. I did have Gateron make the PCB mount fins ever so slightly smaller.

God, I'm sold. I was going to go for 62g..I've been tempted to go with 67g now...Can the 2 grams between the 65 and the 67 really make all that difference?

Yeah it's pretty surprising that there's a noticeable difference between them, but I would imagine it's because those measurements are the forces required to bottom-out instead of actuation.

I didn't think so airtree but I freaking love my 67g on my GON the difference between e 62g on my duck are very noticeable. I also have 65g on my switch tester and it slightly noticeable if your paying attention to it.
Living speed bump was stating how these zealios are already very smooth without lube and that he is probably going to go the unlubed route in his review. I'm super stoked to try these out. I prefer to use only the tiniest amount of lube on cherry ergos as even just a Smidgee too much and you lose the bump. I can't wait to compare these

Um, this was me playing with my Zealios on my newly built JD forty five. I have not worked out the function layer for the numbers or punctuation yet haha.
-
Living speed bump was stating how these zealios are already very smooth without lube and that he is probably going to go the unlubed route in his review.
Yeah, I'm really excited for a switch that sounds like it's really nice without lube. I personally can't stand unlubed mx clears, but I always feel like when I do lube them they lose a lot of the tactility that I like to have while typing. Unlubed 67g zealios seem like a great compromise!
-

I'm thinking the same thing. Yes the lube was nice but honestly, all the Gaterons I've tried and smooth enough to not have to worry about lubing. It's nice just to slap a switch into a build and then enjoy.
-
i want dis. and not just because purple is my favorite color

Other than stock MX Clear and Panda Clears. 62g, 65g, and 67g never felt so good.
I really like my lubed Panda Clears but I always thought they were a tad too heavy. How do these stack up?
I still really like Panda Clears but I think the 67g would fit you better. Give me a little while to play with these switches. I'll make a Panda Clear outta these and report back.
Sounds good! Panda clears technically have 80g springs right? Is it just me or do MX clears actually feel smoother when their stem is placed in a Gateron housing. But these new zealios sound even smoother than that!
-
How the heck did I miss seeing this thread until now!?!?!
Holy favourite switches, Batman! I have to have these, like, in the thousands....
Can't quite decide which spring weight to get, though. I like light switches, and 62g ErgoClears are my favourites, but what I'm really after is the maximum "pop" and best feel with heavy keycaps. From the reviews so far that seems to be the 67g unlubed version. I think that's got to be the one for me....
I WANT THESE.

I agree. It sounds like 67g is what I'd want.

So, after using these for a bit, PCB-mounted in my JD45, with variable weighting and Hack'd by Geeks SA keycaps, these are my thoughts:
I LOVE THESE SWITCHES!
I have always been a fan of stock clears, especially when lubed. I was never a big fan of the "ergo" mod using either stock light Cherry springs, or the Korean 62g spring, in either of the gold or standard varieties.
These Zealios, in the 62g version, feel exactly like 62g lubed ergo clears to me. I have these on the outside switches, where my pinkies would hit, so they feel okay there. I would not really prefer a full board with 62g switches, because, as I stated earlier, I've never been a huge fan of ergo clears.
The 67g version I have on the inside keys, and they feel most like lubed stock Cherry MX clears to me. Which I have always liked. But I have always felt lubed stock clears were just ever so slightly too heavy, and that's the feeling I get from these as well.
The 65g version is my "Goldilocks" switch. These feel just right. If I were to pick one weight out of the three, this would be it. As CPTBadAss said in his review, they feel very smooth and consistent all the way through from top to actuation to bottom out. I have these on the middle regions of the board,
The lubed versions of the Zealios that I received are ever so slightly smoother, but not enough to warrant the extra effort required, in my opinion. There are some who will always want lubed switches, just to have the very best experience they can get. But I am the type who would love to have a switch that I can install as-stock, and have an experience 80% or more of what the lubed version will get you. And about the same as what a lubed Cherry MX switch gets you.
So, after actual typing experience with these installed in a keyboard, I can tell you that my strong preference is toward the 65g spring version. When these are offered for sale, I will be buying large quantities of them.

I was certain 67g non-lubed was for me...until I read this about the 65g non. I wish I could try them each out first, because I definitely plan to stock up in the GB.

Thanks for writing this. I've been thinking about a variable-weight board for a while now. In fact, I was thinking about doing that on my G80-1800 when I get my Leeku PCB. And since I plan to use HyperFuse caps, I can't think of a better switch than purple Zealios.

Not yet, but it's a beauty. Pretty much my endgame mini keyboard. I'll get some pics of it later, so you guys can drool. :)

Yeah, it's hard to tell what things will feel like just by reading someone's description of it. I think the 65g would be the best option, then people who prefer lighter ergo clears could replace the springs with 62g or 55g springs, and those who prefer standard clears could replace the springs with 67g or higher. 85g springs are way too heavy, though, I can tell you from experience.

Thanks for the write up, JD!
I just realized I never publicly shared my quick blurb review that I sent to testers. Here's a straight copy paste:
My first thoughts when testing lubed and unlubed stock switches:
62g - Wow, this feels like a way better brown. The bump is a bit more pronounced, but a bit less than what's found on 62g lubed "new" clears
62g lubed - I felt that it lost a bit of its bump after lubing. Perhaps a good alternative for Vintage browns? Koreans are cray cray over vintage browns.
65g - The whole movement is very smooth, and there's no "jumps" into bumps or ditches.
65g lubed - This really impressed me. The transition from top to bottom was pretty much perfect, and if pressed slowly, you can feel a nice cushion when bottoming out after the bump.
67g - Hard to compare Cherry to Topre, but if I had to compare the two, I'd say this would be similar. The resistance is up top, and your finger just naturally drops down after the bump. The bottom out cushion after the bump wasn't as nice feeling as the 65g counterparts. Perhaps it's due to the heavier spring which made me lose the nice, smooth gradual cushion. This stock switch reminded me of 62g "new" clears after lubing, without the gritty feel.
67g lubed - Probably my second go-to weight. While testing with a keycap and pressing down on it, the bump still felt "shorter" than the 65g lubed counterpart, but the feeling was a bit more pronounced and "in your face". It's hard to describe. The switch felt like it jumped back a bit faster/snappier, but then again, I could be imagining things.
-
So the general consensus is that 65g is #1?

Thanks for the write up JD. You described the setup with both the 62g and 65g non lubed as though you've read my mind. 62g on the outside and 65g on the inside was the setup I was planning on going with once these switches become available.

Thanks for your insights guys.

I actually really enjoy the experience of typing on the variable weighted keyboard, something I didn't think I would like.
How did you decide which keys were which weight?
-
So uh. Who remembers when that mosaic image was in the OP?
What ever happened with that?
I see no red in these Zealios.
It was a scam all along!

How did you decide which keys were which weight?
Since I needed around 50 keys for my JD45, Zeal sent me 17 each of the different weights. I started in the center with the 67g's, and filled as many keys as I could, while keeping symmetry and filling all rows. Then I worked out from there with the 65g's, again keeping symmetry and filling all rows, and finally finished with the 62g's on the outside.

Wow so three weights? I think the RealForce variable only has two.

They were just red linear zealios from the factory as samples. I never got them, but got black ones instead.

I will probably swap out the springs in the 67g switches for 65g gold springs, and then I will also only have two weights. Or I might swap the 62g for 65g, also, and have a uniform 65g board. :)
But I don't mind the stiffer feeling in the center. It doesn't bother me enough that I wouldn't use them that way.

The clear housing was the truth tho.

Yeah I would highly recommend getting a few extra Zealios than you need in the GB and lubing those before just going at the lot of them. I am 110% on board with you about not using MX Clears unless they are lubed. The unlubed Zealios are as smooth as any of my lubed MX Clears keyboards as is, the lube really just seems to amplify/diminish the tactile bump, depending on how much you use and how you use it. It is slightly smoother, yes, but I have the feeling that after I test them on a full keyboard up to speed, I won't really notice the additional "nth" of smoothness brought on by the lube.
-
The lubed versions of the Zealios that I received are ever so slightly smoother, but not enough to warrant the extra effort required, in my opinion.
Yeah, I felt the exact same way. :thumb:
But with the clear housing, I also know quite a few people will probably sticker the switches for aesthetics, and if you already have the switch open, there isn't really a reason not at that point if you want uber-smoothness.
-
This is a little bit OT but I just realized, I've never used Gateron browns or heard much about them. MX browns are known for their scratchiness. Are Gateron browns comparably smoother, like these are compared to clears?

I have Gateron browns, haven't noticed the scratchiness I usually feel with MX ones. They almost feel like very slightly lubed MX browns. I'm not a browns fan, but if I was I'd prefer Gaterons I think.

I've tried brand new gateron and cherry browns side by side, and there's a definite difference between them. the difference is more noticeable between linear switch counterparts though.

Perhaps I'll do a board with Zealios on the alpha and stock gateron black on the modifiers. Who knows ... ::)

Don't you think it would feel weird? What are you after?

I used Cherry reds on my modifiers and whites on the rest. Logic being that lighter springs should be on the keys you have to hold down.

True enough. The linear factor didn't really weigh into my decision.
I went with whites because I could be couldn't get clears. These zealios sound like the solution for my next board.

To be honest I've never tried it. It is just that the lightest keys I have at hand ate gateron black. :)

They are slightly smoother, but the tactile bump is very similar, still too small for my personal taste.

Do we have any idea on when these might be available? I would love these for my KC60... when ever it arrives... Also do we have a ball park pricing because these are custom runs?

Will we be settling on a single spring or will they be available in 62g/65g/67g?

I've never heard of mixing tactile and linear switches on the same board. Is there any precedent for this kind of thing?
This is something I'm thinking of doing as well, at least to test it out. I have a bunch of gateron browns and clears, and many different weighted springs to experiment with, but personally I think having different tactility would be interesting. I do more gaming than typing on most of my boards, and after having used a Novatouch for about a year, going back to an MX brown board I can tell a difference while gaming, noticing the bump whereas previously I wouldn't notice anything on upstrokes with the topre. For the modifiers though, I can't see a reason (and perhaps it has to do with some scratchiness on my cherry browns) one would want the tactility for Shift, Ctrl and Alt. Again, this is more for gaming purposes, the way I'm looking at it. I've got an orion v2 coming, so eventually when I have it, I want to do some test runs modding my QFR's and see what I like. These switches look awesome though, I'm definitely going to grab at least 100.
-
For those with samples, can anyone test to see if 55g springs (esp. GON, sprit springs) will cause the switch to stick? Bonus points for heavier caps like SA profile or various artisans.

I think i actually have a few 55g springs left over, will look when i get back in late tonight, and test and report back if so.

I don't need this... I need this.

Just joined the drop for the carbon keycap set, so that now means I am committed to an ergodox and these switches when the buy happens! ;D :thumb:

/me is ready to get funky with some Zealios
-
So, after using these for a bit, PCB-mounted in my JD45, with variable weighting and Hack'd by Geeks SA keycaps, these are my thoughts:
Soo in conclusion these switches are on par with lubed mx? But when lubed 20% better than mx?
-

How long will it be open for?

Where will the switches be shipped from?
EDIT: just noticed Zeals location :P
-
75c? Tiered discounts?
As explained on IRC, Gateron MOQ is really really high. If the order doesn't tip it, I'll be buying out the rest. Due to the customization of the switch and tooling/logistics, there will not be tiered discounts for this buy. Sorry.
How long will it be open for?
GB will be open until Sept 30, 2015.
Hyped! :D
Where will the switches be shipped from?
Canada. Will look into finding an EU member to proxy.
-
Welp, guess I'm going to sell off my Gateron clears and get a set of these to put into my Neutrino.
-
Sorry if this has been asked before... How are you counting switches? By weight, hand, or machine? I was part of another Gateron group buy and received 10 less than I actually ordered and I want to make sure that doesn't happen here.
-

I'll be double weighing them on two different scales (one measures to 0.01g), the other to the nearest gram. I'll also have one bag hand counted for cross reference. Don't worry, you won't get the short end of the stick and end up with 10 less switches.
-
I assume that since the GB is open until the 30th, that they will be shipping a week or so after the end of the GB?
-
will the switches be shipped when we order or only after the GB ends?
do you ship international?

Zeal did just say something about finding a proxy member in Europe, so I'm sure he will ship internationally.
-
I assume that since the GB is open until the 30th, that they will be shipping a week or so after the end of the GB?
Gateron has quoted me "1 day to manufacture" time. That does not include purchasing the purple plastics pellets, packing & shipping. I'd say roughly 1 business week after order has been submitted to Gateron before it arrives at my doorsteps. Then from there, I'll ship on a first-to-order basis.

do you ship international?
It will be shipped only after GB ends + manufacturing + shipping time. I ship worldwide!
-

In that case, I'll have to be one of the first to order!

any advice? I've only ever used mx browns and gateron browns (just barely got my first mech). I have a mx clear coming in but haven't tried a full board with it just the tester and from the way it feels clears > browns. I feel like i'll prefer heavier keys. I don't understand the whole springiness/crisp feeling (prob cause I haven't used a mech that long and never tried modded switches). So for a complete newbie would 67's be the starting place? or 65's?

To everyone asking for a cheaper USA shipping method: There's only Canada Post Tracked Packet USA (4-10 business days), and it costs a mere $1-2 less. Canada Post doesn't have the low prices you guys have in the states. Good thing is overnight shipping is well worth it, trust me. ;)

Yea, that's why I had no issue with paying the $15. Well worth the money and they get into my hands even faster. Too bad I'll still be waiting on a Carbon set to complete this build.

ahh holy.. how much do you expect to sell them for in your store after the gb? Thinking of only getting a tkl amount of switches as I can't think of spending 100+ on switches that I won't use relatively quickly

I just hope I'm within the first batch of orders to be shipped out also, 1 day shipping is sweet! (I've been shipping headphones through FedEx, and I've been paying about the same price for shipping as these switches were, but it takes a week, so for me, this is relatively cheap!)

Now all we need is an EU proxy... :-X

Ordered!! Woo this is so exciting

that price though.
Hmm...
I'll probably get a set, but not sure if i'm willing to pay for two >.>

@zeal, I just realized I was an idiot and ordered 65! And that's definitely NOT a multiple of ten! Can I change my order to five more switches, or do you mind that I made that mistake? My apologies for my idiocy.

I don't think they will. It was totally my fault (it's very clearly written on the order page, and I read it too. I was going to order 60, as it's a multiple of ten, but I thought "oh, well it might be nice to have some extra switches" and immediately forgot about your request for multiples of ten. I bet I'll be the only one, and if there are more, I couldn't imagine more than a handful of the orders would be like this. Especially considering that it sounds like a lot of people will be ordering a few hundred... Again, my apologies.

So I'm just confirming in the review on keychatter it says the 67g purple has a little click sound is this true?
If not I am still going to buy them.
Also how much will they cost after the GB?

No, they don't click like clicky switches. I think what he meant was it removed a bit of the "top-out" sound when the stem bounces back due to the lube.
Price after GB will depend on how many I'll have to order to cover MOQ, or if MOQ gets reached, how many extras I decide on order. So there's no set price yet.

I'm used to Topre 55g and buckling springs. Which Purple would be best for me? 65g or 67g? Deciding which to get for my Jane.
Also, never used linear before on a board, but thinking of putting some in my Mira, when that happens. Since I like heavier switches, would 67g be too heavy or should I opt for 65g?
First-world decisions, decisions...!

I'm not you, so I really can't make that decision D: It does sound like you like heavier switches though.
67g Clear Zealio is still lighter than MX Blacks. Keep that in mind!

Ah, okay. Thanks! Looks like I'll opt for the 67g for my Mira. The Jane will be my first MX board, and so I've never used Ergo Clears, but have decided that those will be my first switch. May go for Purple 65g since that so far seems to be the most favorable after all three reviews are averaged.

did the clears/linears get any special attention other than the springs and 4pin compatible, transparent housing? (specifically looking for a butter linear)

Ooh, never seen that comparison, very nice. A couple follow-up questions though: 1- I guess closer to my actual original question is do your linears differ from standard gaterons, which are already better than cherry, by more than what i mentioned or could I get away with standard gat linears and custom springs if i wanted new weight? (if I didn't want RGB support) 2- I keep hearing you refer to the weights as 62 being around brown territory and your 67 being lighter than blacks, but ripster's tests seem to disagree, maybe I'm just not understanding something?

Happy to answer those questions.
1: The RGB switch top further enhances the smoothness of the Gateron / Zealio switches as the guiding rails have been tweaked slightly. From my brief testing, the "catching issue" some people have reported using regular clear tops / milky Gateron tops with thicker keycaps are not present on the RGB switch tops.
2: The 62g, 65g and 67g spring weights you see me referencing are "Korean spring weights", which measure the bottom out force of the switch instead of the actuation force, like Cherry. It's confusing at first, but once you feel it, you'll be able to relate.

Is it me or there is a different in density in the plastic between the gateron sliding (I don't know how to call it, the thing on top left of the switch) part and the cherry one?

Are you referring that the Gateron has a bit more plastic on the rear leg in the back? If so, it does appear that the leg is more "filled in". Though it wouldn't make much of a difference in the feeling. :P The point of the pic was to show off the smoothness & roughness of the slider legs.

I was going to purchase a small batch of these for a college project, but the shipping is just so much :(
-
Pretty sure this has been asked before but I just want to triple check before I send in my purchase, the springs are done in the korean weighting and the 62g is just a bit heavier than normal browns? Or is it a bit heavier than blues? I know 65g is suggested, and do they come factory lubed and if so what would be the advantages of lubing them ourselves?
Thanks so much!
-

Depending on when your project is due and where you live, you can ask for someone to tack on a few more switches for you and ship them out after they receive it in whatever country you live in (guessing US).

Yes, the springs are measured by Korean weighting system, and 62g is a bit heavier than stock Cherry MX brown/blue/red switches -- they all share the same spring.
The legs are factory lubed on Zealios. Purchasing Krytox lube is so that the end user has more control on what points they want lubed, as lubing is subjective to each person's taste.

In addition to this post (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=75300.msg1868227#msg1868227), I'll add some of my thoughts here.
I really like the Zealio switch but I prefer the Matias Quiet switch. I like the higher actuation point. I REALLY like the bottom out feeling you get in the Matias Quiets because of the rubber inserts. It's a little cushiony. I think that the tactile bump is sharper feeling and not as rounded as anything MX-mount. To me, Alps tactile switches > MX-mount.

Modern Alps keysets in fun colors are hard to find but starting to become more common. Tai Hao sets and SP sets are starting to gain headway.
Vintage Alps keysets are common and easy to find on eBay and other places. And cheap. I've picked up Alps compatible rubber dome keyboards for $2.

Any opinions on how the clear linear variants feel? The reviews mostly focus on the tactile switches, doesn't go that detailed on the linears beyond saying they're similar to vintage blacks...How do they compare to regular Gateron Clears/Reds/Blacks in terms of smoothness and feel?

All 3 of the above switches you've listed share the same mould, so the Linear line of Zealio switches will equally be as smooth. The only difference is the completely transparent housing and a more customized spring weight. 62g/65g/67g are all a bit heavier than reds, but lighter than blacks.

edit: woops, for some reason I thought they were $0.55.. but they were $0.75. Not too bad of a markup actually, still ends up being quite a bit of a difference when you need to buy 70 - 100 at a time.
Still eagerly awaiting for mine to arrive.. super excited to put these in my first custom.

Geez!
I wouldn't call a $0.22 price increase for retail sale "double" preorder/GB pricing. Customers were informed that the price would be adjusted upon the arrival of my second shipment of switches. :-X

Yeah, my bad. Updated my post.

Finished blue stickered zealios on the left!
Gonna be using some white stickers on some linear zealios soon! Love the transparent housings.

I'm really loving my 65g zealios with DSA profile, I haven't tried other profiles yet but will soon.
-
I'm such a dummy- I'm like 10 switches short of 62g tactiles for my current build- when are these coming back in stock?
Anyone have about 10 switches they would sell?

I would totally help you out if I had 62g. :( I can spare some 67g if you have springs or don't mind 67g in your F-row or wherever.

So... now that all purple Zealios are sold out, I guess Round 2 is coming soon? :3
-
ugh I hope the 62g tactile will come back soon!

Zeal is working on a round 2 at the moment, I believe he was planning on doing the group buy this month (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

Correct - mid Jan was what he told me.

Went through the other thread and found where he had said it.
I have the urge to buy some 78g switches but I have no need or reason, but I'm trying to find one :(

Need Zealios for to win.

So I saw on the website "R2 Zealio Switch GB/Pre-order will come soon in January!" which is awesome and seems like what you guys are talking about. My question is, is this group buy going to be only on/through geekhack or will it be on massdrop or something similar? Basically, I'm new here and it said I needed 50 posts before participating in group buys, so will I need to have 50 posts if I want some of these in the upcoming January drop?

I believe that it'll be on zealpc (website), but I don't think there's a minimum requirement for GB's. Most are just a google form with paypal invoicing anyways.

Awesome! Thanks for the info.

It's a bit expensive, but has anyone ever user silver epoxy (something like this http://www.amazon.com/MG-Chemicals-Two-Part-Conductive-Adhesive/dp/B008UH4DB2) to "solder" keyboard switches.
If heat is indeed relted to the zealio chattering, it seems like an easy fix.
Been tempted to try it.
-
Ok I suppose I was worrying over nothing :)
I got bored tonight and soldered my compact 1800 tonight, and switch hitter is showing no chattering. :)
If anyone is curious, I soldered at 650F, and didn't hold the tip on any pad for more that 3 seconds, 2 seconds for almost all of them. I figure slightly higher heat for shorter periods will lead to less heat transfer tithe plastic than lower heat for longer periods.
Anywa, thanks zeal couldn't be more happy :)
-
I soldered my Compact SQ at whatever the max heat is (Weller 40W) with some average leaded solder... The heat is on the pcb for less than a second. Had zero issues with my 65g Zealios :thumb:

Nice!

i pulled the stems out of my 62g zealios and mounted them on brown springs in cherry housings and i have this to say:
1. yes there is a tiny bit more wobble on these stems vs. stocks. Not enough for me to ever care about thouh and afaik there is absolutely no interference with the operation of the switch.
2. these are every bit as smooth as i had hoped. they feel absolutely terrific.
3. way easier to mount and pull keys than stock clears
4. i think they also sound great.
tl;dr if you're a wobble hound then proceed with caution - everybody else should run a nd get a set. these are better than any cherry switch i have ever tried (blue, red, clear, black, brown). they really ae smoother because they're molded better or made with better plastic... check zelio's thread for the macro shots comparing the surface of stock blacks and clears to his... the really do like that (i confirmed with a jeweler's loupe).
great job and i will definitely buy again.

Are there already boards with them? Or should I go completely custom?

I have only seen the WhiteFox board sold with Zealios pre-assembled...you would have to place these in an existing board yourself. Going custom is one option...or just desolder/resolder these into the board. If you have a PCB mount keyboard with Cherry switches you can just swap the top halves/springs/sliders in without issue (except a bit of wobbling, in that case switch stickers would help a bit)

I'm pretty sure you had to assemble the white fox yourself if you bought zealios. (IIRC)

What's smoother zealio's or gateron?
-
What's smoother zealio's or gateron?
They are both equally smooth. However you won't be finding any purple (MX Clear stem-like) Gaterons due to our contract agreement.

Those Zealio's really look super nice. Perhaps time to learn soldering and start a little project of my own in the summer and try them out.
-
I always see Zealio switches on custom high-end boards but I've yet to jump down the rabbit hole of making my own board. Maybe I'll have to make the jump because of all the positive things I keep hearing.
-
Zeal, I'm totally satisfied with my round 1 65g tactile Zealios. I have a batch of round 2 62g tactile Zealios that I haven't used yet and I've ordered a batch of round 4 62g Zealios, as well. Considering that 1 set of these switches will be going into a hand-wired keyboard, do you think the difference between the round 2 switches and round 4 switches is significant enough to wait for the round 4 switches (and save the round 2 switches for a keyboard with a PCB)?

I've been thinking the same thing, haha. My next board purchase is for sure going to be one with Zealios. I can imagine it being fun to build them once you know what you're doing. ;D

All up to you and how patient you are. :)

will bottom side switch will updated to support smd led?

There are no plans on making a cutout for the Zealio switches. Not all PCBs have the LED sitting ontop. The Zeal60 for example has the SMD LED flush against the PCB, allowing Zealios to work on it without issue.

I have Zealios 78g tactile on my ergodox but few switches make some noise. Do you have any advices for lubbing?
I saw Ripster's photo serie (http://imgur.com/a/lhLqo) but I'm living in France and most of products don't exist here...
For the moment I have this : http://fr.rs-online.com/web/p/graisses/0520181/

I believe you also sent me an email, but I'll reply here as well.
I'd personally recommend picking up some the GH V4 thick lube on my site. It's a custom blend of Krytox specifically made for tactile switches/springs/stabilizers. If you're looking for something local, try finding a thick lube containing ptfe at the very least.

Thanks a lot !

Zealios are simply mesmerizing.

r5 soon? there were some 67g in stock yesterday when i checked, now it's all gone :(

Yeah, R5 will launch end of the month/early Feb. Stay tuned.
