Bushwacker

An extra-wide rubber grommet mounted leafspring keyboard

IC Form
Discord

Layout

  • Left-handed numpad allows comfortable simultaneous numpad & mouse use, and brings hands closer together for right-handed mouse users in normal operation
  • Extra right-side column allows for full nav cluster functionality, without typical 65% compromises
  • Optional 2u delete for more natural homing, and optional right-side 2u enter to hit with your mouse hand thumb
  • Wider gaps (6.35mm instead of typical 4.7625mm) make separation more concrete, and the 12.7mm gap between numpad and 60% block mitigates mistypes when reaching for left control.
  • Plate(s) will have limited compatibility - rather than providing a universal plate, it can be built plateless
  • IC form will mainly be used to refine the specific plate options offered at GB - plate files will also be available for less popular layouts and so they may be cut in other materials

258211-2

Internals

  • Grommets isolate the PCB/plate assembly from the metal case, and self-align for easy assembly
  • Leaf spring PCB allows for plenty of evenly distributed flex, with slightly softer spots intentionally placed near the center of the typing position and spacebar
  • Aluminum plate & plate foam clean and warm the sound, in addition to further evening out the flex and only slightly decreasing flex overall

Externals

  • All aluminum, with a mass of roughly 2KG unbuilt (case, pcbs, plate) and 2.5KG built
  • Low front height, with an EKH of roughly 22mm (read more about EKH here)
  • 6 degree typing angle
  • Colors TBD, but currently plan on black, gray, silver, and red, with potentially some two-toned configurations as well (or instead)

258195-3          258197-4
258191-5          258193-6

Electronics

  • STM32 controlled PCB using an ESD & fuse protected daughterboard
  • QMK & VIA support planned, with additional firmware support planned
  • RGB lock lights, with light piping for superior visibility

Price TBD

FAQ

Vendors?

I would love to have a vendor run this, as based on my experience with the Timber Wolf, I don't think I'm very good at that stuff. I've contacted a couple already, and if you are a vendor and are interested in running this please reach out, but I'm also considering using something like a fulfillment service. We'll see.

Pricing?

TBD, but likely not super low - despite there not being a weight, some of the geometry isn't the most friendly to machine, and it's kinda huge. I'd say midrange.

ETA?

TBD, I wanna get it perfect first, and I need more prototypes.

Files?

I'll release a bunch of plate files so people can get their own cut in exactly their desired layout and material, and I also plan to open source the PCB after the GB.

2U vertical keys?

I love the 2U delete in this position because it fits as the solution to these 3 criteria:
1) I want the delete key to be directly to the right of backslash, just like on a full-size or TKL
2) I don't want any additional keys below the delete key, which might get in the way of my pinky when I hit delete, or mess up my homing
3) I don't want a gap between the up arrow and the delete key

Obviously, we're left with the problem of there being no properly legended 2U delete keys, but I make do with a numpad+

The enter is because I like to hit enter with my mouse hand thumb after typing something brief, say into the address bar, or an excel document. Just fits my use pattern, and I've heard from a few other people that they do something similar.

Alternative Firmwares?

Long story short, Mr. xyz is working on a new qmk gui thing called vial. The raison d'etre is more to do with being open source and not requiring changes be made to the central repository when designers want to add their keyboard, but one of the neat side benefits is that he was also able to add support for instant remapping of encoder behavior and it even has layer functionality for the encoders. I'm using it right now and it's great, and this particular feature is perfect for the Bushwacker, but the one eh thing is that it's super early development and it might not be out or have a stable release when the Bushwacker comes out, so I'm not gonna commit to it being a feature of this board (tho I will provide files for anyone who lives the beta testing lifestyle).

C-Can any keyboard survive jarate?

If this knob serves the same function as the one in the Timber Wolf (Crok's previous GB, see me stanning it in my signature), then volume control by default. I use for mute/unmute and play/pause as well.

so hm i shoulda written more on this. basically, this board was originally designed to be my keyboard-designing keyboard. as such, personally, ill be using the knob for things like changing grid size in kicad, switching between tools in fusion 360, etc. however, default behavior will be volume & mute because that i think will be the most popular use

The more I look at this, the more I want it. I appreciate the split spacebar options :thumb: and that right nav cluster looks aesthetic and functional. If possible, would like to see prototypes sent out to streamers/reviewers.

this is the innovation this community needed.
I'm really interested in this, if it is possible to keep under or around the 450-500 USD range...

Quick update: vendor search has gone so well that I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. New proto ordered with slight geometry update and some small internal tweaks, I think y'all are gonna like it. Sorry for the lack of updates but I didn't have much to say. I'll post a big IC 2 update when the new proto's in and vendors are locked.
