Noob Painter Sees Success!
« on: Sun, 17 November 2013, 17:59:16 »
Hi all,

This is my first attempt spray painting pretty much anything but I gained enough knowledge from around the site that I wanted to try my hand.

I bought 2 replacement cases knowing that I might totally mess the first case up, but I didn't, YAY!

So glad I got to participate in the build log so I will give some tips:
1. Use 400-grit sandpaper or close to that to prep the silver case surface.
2. Let your case dry in a safe place like a garage.
3. Allow plenty of dry time before flipping the case over.
4. Don't worry too much about imperfections as they can be buffed out.

Album of process

After I ordered these key caps I knew my case had to be white. Ended up using Rustoleum Pearl Mist as the final paint color. It does bring attention to the couple flaws that I have (dust), but still looks amazing!

You can read about the keycaps here

Finished product!!

I cannot wait to paint my next case to match my next set of keycaps, huehue.

That looks great!

You'd hardly even recognise it as a QFR any more ;)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

This looks really good! A lot of painters on here suggest to sand multiple times while increasing the grit, but it looks like you had a great outcome only using 400 grit.  :thumb:

How smooth is the surface?

I actually used 220 grit the first time around, which scratched the case up-- it wasn't very smooth and I was worried but enough paint made it even again.
Next time I'll just be using 400 to prep the plastic.

Great job MsYutai!

I've always wanted to paint my QFR pearl white. I'll be sure to keep your instructions in mind once I finally get around to doing mine  :D

Looks amazing! Congrats on your first paint job. Very impressive, living the rainbow keycaps too ^^ curious: what would you do to correct the dust problem?  Also, is the dust going on in between layers or as you were drying it?

I think it was happening when drying because I left it outside to dry. It's easy to correct just take the 600 grit sandpaper and sand it off. Then it looked kinda weird because it wasn't as glossy in that spot so I painted another coat. Hope that helps!

Looks great!  I like Pearl Mist a lot, though it's a very temperamental slow to dry paint :(

400-grit is more than sufficient for the surface before painting.  You only need 1000-2000-grit for already painted surfaces for polishing.
