Full Metal Filco
« on: Sat, 15 December 2012, 17:53:08 »
The culmination of 5 group buys.  (3 by feng - big thanks btw  :D and the custom plate which has not finished yet )  I would like to present you with the full metal filco:

First off this thing is an absolute joy to type on.  I love the feel of the keys, and the sound of bottoming out.  The Filco currently has browns, which I think are just a little to light for the keycaps.  When I get the plate in I plan to swap in clears.  Just thought I would show it off   ;D

Yep, a Poker with a oneproduct case.  I used the keycaps and space bar from the poker,  I was just waiting for the Filco case to come in.  The caps feel kinda wierd on plate mounted switches - the group by should fix that :D

I still prefer the Cylon look.  Wonder what their keyboards would look like ...
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

That doubleshot copper/aluminum would be great, but why not gold/silver instead?

The materials would be more, but the manufacture might be easier.

Bronze takes patina really well, so you could pre-age it in minutes.

Gold/silver casting wouldn't work (probably) as you usually give a casting metal about 150oC (or more) super heat which will partly re-flow the first "shot".  Platinum would work for a first cast as its melting point is way up there, but you are then talking hundreds per cap.

A much more sensible way of doing it would be to use standard inlay methods - cast a silver key, carve out the lettering and seat gold wire in the recess or, even easier, flow gold solder in.

This works with other metals too, brass/bronze/copper with silver or gold lettering - just remember that where you strike the key you will ware the patina away - there's a rather famous bronze statue (of the female persuasion) who has taken on a beautiful even deep patina, except her buttocks which look like they came out the foundry yesterday...

Any other thoughts...

Ohh I have an idea for a single run (I'll be making silver caps over, and over, and over, and...) which will be horribly expensive - other than that I don't want to spoil the surprise.
