I understand that it's really expensive :( And phwoah those feng caps are really cool, at this stage it's impossible for me to produce at that price, I'd be losing heaps of money D: I think I'll have to do a bit more research in trying to reduce the cost, it will most likely be through producing a higher quantity.
I feel like anyone seriously interested in progressing their hobby of casting/creating keycaps is going to focus this kind of money on basic tools. You may not be able to CNC this keycap yourself for such a low cost, but maybe look into running a GB, outsourcing to a competent manufacturer, and save your potential fans money.Hey Binge, yeah I think you're right, am looking into doing a GroupBuy to reduce the cost substantially. Actually that's not the case, for instance the TGR-Jane had 20 boards made and I paid $420 for the full aluminum case which even had a custom engraved brass plate + PCB + plate and it was not made in China.
I'm not talking about CNC cases made in China in 100+ quantities, I'm talking about some Korean ones made in much lower quantities (50 and lower). Even at a quantity of 15 I'm shocked to hear that your margins are small. Perhaps you could get some quotes from other machine shops, because I don't think those prices are competitive.

I have them do the finishing and painting to my spec - I'll see if I can get a breakdown of the costs. Moving to quantity now though, so I think the pricing is going to change dramatically
It's perhaps more the fact that they're a prototyping company (they deal with more 1-off type deals, so high initial setup costs) I've contacted some other shops that's more geared up for batch production to see what they'd charge. Fingers crossed :D
It's most definitely that. Those shops always have really high prices because they don't deal in quantities. The good news is you have your part locked in so you just have to push that out for quotes. Good luck man!

HMMM, that gives me a good idea actually! I could have an amount of the GroupBuy a certain colour (for the limited edition) ie: 15 units as originally planned. Then have have other options that will be recurring stock, such as the unpainted cap!

I used the colours I chose for a project I did during university as I spent a long time researching colours that worked well and where super vibrant, it's hard to appreciate it over the web, but they're really nice I think :D
Down the track, I'll perhaps do colours matched to certain existing keycap sets :)

Pantone 389C was for the ToXiC set. I'd probably buy one of those if the price was right. Eyeballing the purple for HyperFuse as well. Chartreuse is 390C which is similar but could be better.

You would probably not make as much on the sales, but you wouldn't have to eat the whole cost and could possibly have an avenue to dump excess stock off on for later runs. Now for some potentially upsetting news. These where shipped today (Wednesday) via DHL (all praise), however Friday is a public holiday.

Thanks heaps dude appreciate it :) Cannot WAIT to show the prototype for the macropad :D I was really inspired by the old Apple M0110 keyboards, really just wanted to do something different away from everything that's out now, something fun!
It's funny, I actually originally just made it to purely advertise my keycaps, then everyone just kinda made me productize hahaha. Really lucky to have found a really talented software/engineering guy (http://www.machineindustries.co/ (http://www.machineindustries.co/)), which is another funny story :P He found me through RoastPotatoes (keyboard messiah) blog (http://blog.roastpotatoes.co/ (http://blog.roastpotatoes.co/)) then contacted me and he worked something up to get it going :D. Cannot wait to show off the configurator he made for it, it's freaking SWEET and super easy + it looks sexy as hell :P He also designed a bootloader to make the M10 show as a storage device on the computer when put into programming mode and you just drag on the file generated by the configurator and boom done! :D Anyways sorry, random tangent, but I get really excited talking about it :D

Wow, as someone who knows jack **** about programming and spent a few hours just trying to get the software on my Duck Eagle to work that bootloader sounds amazing.Oh man, I cannot wait to show off the awesome stuff Machine has done, but basically it's a line drawing of the M10 and you just click the key in the interface and type in what you want it to do or click a media key etc, then there's also the layers etc. It runs all from a browser so it's compatible with any OS. Best part is the whole thing's going to be open-source so hopefully other makers can utilize it to streamline the process of programming keyboards easily :D Really excited to demonstrate it in the following weeks!! Trying our best to add as much value to this unit, as it's something I'm really passionate about - just so excited to get this off the ground :D

I realise the box is huge LOL, and I honestly wish it where smaller.. but the AusPost shipping thing is so beyond retarded until I can get a business account to print direct to thermal labels. I literally have to print a4 sheets, cut it in half and stick that on, so box size was dependent. ><"
Will be shipping them tomorrow, I was planning on doing it today, but ended up finished up at 10PM :/ (Post closes at 5:30)
This was my first GroupBuy, so a lot of time was spent figuring things out and packaging individual items :O
Each package includes:
- The keycap
- A plaque of authenticity (only for coloured editions) (1/15 will have a fluro version)
- A 4% PCB to tinker with :)

It seems the keycaps fit different depending on switch type, so you may have to shimmy it accordingly. On some switches it fits perfectly, on some it's loose, a tighter fit can be created by adding tape between the stem.

mine just arrived. the caps are really lovely and are of exceptional quality. i'm not sure which i love better... the raw alu one or the painted ones.
and such awesome packaging and extras. the etched glass with unique numbering and serials for the limited release colors, the cool pcb, and even the shipping labels and little boxes for the keycaps.

Also if you want to get the aluminium cap super shiny, get one of those jewelery polishing cloths (silver/gold any type will do) then just rub it for about a minute then BOOM mirror finish :)

Been using the raw one for a few weeks now and I have to say I absolutely love it! The feel and sound of the key compared to every other keycap, artisan or not, is completely different and so much more fulfilling to use on a daily basis. Great work again RAMA and I can't wait for the next project to come up :D

Hey there! Yeah, this is my mistake. Canada is the one country which has a different international rate on my site. It should have been $15, but you were seeing the price for the rest of the world for some reason. I think I fixed that, so you should be able to get the $15 rate when you check out. Sorry about that! If battlestation.io are checking up on this thread; shipping one key cap to Canada on your site is $20, which is the same cost as shipping a TKL wrist rest. Is there no way to do it cheaper?
Hey there! Yeah, this is my mistake. Canada is the one country which has a different international rate on my site. It should have been $15, but you were seeing the price for the rest of the world for some reason. I think I fixed that, so you should be able to get the $15 rate when you check out. Sorry about that! If they are the same dimension-ally compared to an OEM Topre stem, they should be interchangeable :) I believe that they are since you can swap them out with existing Topre keyboards!
