As I understand it, people feel that the "sharp" edges of the space bar damage their delicate little fingers.
I cannot really see how that can happen if you hold your hands in the "correct" position, as illustrated above, as your entire hand and thumb is above the space bar.
With the wrong hand position your wrist is lower than the keyboard, and thus part of your hand, probably your thumbs, indeed would strike the edge of the space bar.
