So you can use the keyboard without a converter unlike most Dolch keyboards. That's not the most valuable part of the keyboard though.

"priced to sell" :))
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Simple offer-demand equilibrium. We GHers are very good at inflating goods that otherwise may have low value. Dolches, clacks, vintage mechanical boards, and for that sake even key caps.

I'm quickly thinking that being smart enough for a Paypal account and being smart enough to smartly bid in a set-duration auction are not quite the same barrier to entry these days.  I grew up around car auctions and while it pains me to see stuff like this becoming more and more common in that field over real rarities, I find it kinda funny here watching INSANE action on a board that most of the bidders are trying to scavenge keys from.

If they wanted the keys then you could get them brand new from Sherryton and he'll give you extras to cover most keyboards with that type of key-set.  But some would rather pay up to $300+USD for second hand keys rather than spend $95.00 for a new TKL set.

I know currently Sherryton has it listed as SOLD out but he's getting more in the next month or so.  Patience is always a virtue when it comes to cap collecting here on Geekhack  :thumb: .

Is Sherryton going to buy 400 direct from GMK or does he have a different source?

He did it for the Charred Orange and Classic Beige series, no outside payment required from us.  So he does have the money to go it alone but he prefers to shift the risk onto us if a series of key-caps fail to sell readily, which is understandable.

Because the Dolch series will always sell regardless, and he did have the 87-TKLs on his site selling for a couple of weeks before they ran out.  Don't make that assumption that he will always have the top selling key-sets always available.  If you've got the money, put it down straight for a sherry set before they run out.

Otherwise spend $300+ on Ebay and make some secondhand dealers, really rich  ;D .

I paid $50 and $55 for a couple of them, maybe 2.5 years ago.  Once I bought 5 in a batch for $55 each (shared with someone else here).  The most I paid for one was $100, and that was the worst condition of all.  I did mix it up with new white-on-black Cherry DS mods, so they looked pretty good, especially on a black Filco tenkeyless.

Its not just the caps people are after, it has vintage mx blues and is a varitant of the original Cherry g80-1800. One of my favorite keyboards.

It's definitely been a driving factor. If the GMK Dolch sets become much more available I'd expect these to go for much less.

It's definitely been a driving factor. If the GMK Dolch sets become much more available I'd expect these to go for much less.

I don't agree, any GMK Dolch GB or Originative set is well over $100. Most Dolch Pac kb's sell around $160-$180, they have vintange blue mx switches and have a g80-1800 layout. The Dolch keysets won't affect the sale of the Dolch Pac's.

Like other vintage keyboards, they'll only increase in value over time. People actually like the Dolch Pac keyboard itself.

I love mine, but the switches were basically linear, so I replaced them with new ones and added a stainless steel plate. Works great now, and the dolch PAC is basically perfect for IRC.

Plus mine did away with the awful dolch logo and has inet branding instead. The inet eye is legit.

Well at this point it's just a guessing game. There's been some odd things occurring lately in regards to prices for some of these vintage items. And IMO it feels a bit like a bubble. Historically the prices have inched up over the years. But there have been a few sales recently that seemed a bit high to me.

There haven't been any moogle kits for dolch keys in awhile which can make it a harder sale for some. I do know that when the GMK dolch sets became available the auction prices dropped  down from $100-120 to around $60-80 for a few months. I took advantage of this and picked up 3 more boards because they're the only good source for vintage blues I've found so far. There's a bit more to that story, but I'm going to leave that part out.

I don't see many people posting their modded Dolch boards often, so I can only assume people are buying these to source for parts. Usually boards that require a converter only appeal to a smaller group of buyers.

Again, watching some of these boards go for over $150, especially on geekhack has seemed pretty crazy to me. Especially when I was watching boards go for less then that on eBay.

A few years ago it was common to see people buying these for the Dolch keys, using their Moogles, and selling the rest of the board in the classified ads. These boards would typically go for around $40.

Also if it gets posted to "great finds" I expect the price to skyrocket, so that's not always a fair indicator of an average price.

GH is a niche market willing to pay premium prices for items that otherwise have low value for the general public. What you are pointing is just the fact we at GH believe a piece of plastic worth much more than its manufacturing cost. Or that mechanical switches for a keyboard are better than a simplified rubber alternative that costs a tenth the price of a mechanical one. It appears you are not aware of that simple fact. You are not in a general market, otherwise it is crazy to pay +100 for just a keycaps set.

That's a little hard to believe, you just said that with the recent GMK Dolch ketset release (2013) prices on Dolch keyboards dropped to $60-$80? Please link this, I'm very curious about this.

Same reason you see stock SSK's, Cherry G80's, etc. People enjoy the keyboard itself, what "modding" are you referring to?
