Potential venue (and bump)

Someone suggested the VCFSE. I have contacted them to see if I could host the meetup there. If they allow me to have the meetup there, the meetup would be pushed back a month to April 29th. I think it would be a great venue for the meetup and am hoping that I am able to work with them to organize it. I will update the OP and post another update when things are more definitive.

RIP college students. Finals week.

the VCFSE. I have contacted them to see if I could host the meetup there.

That would be great for me, less than a half hour from my house.

But yes, bad timing just as spring semester is winding down. I am  *VERY*  glad that I went to college on the quarter system.
Fake news and disinformation are just a few of the symptoms of whatís wrong. The problem is something far more fundamental. The problem is these vastly powerful algorithmic engines are blackboxes. And, at the business end of the operation, each individual user only sees what each individual user sees. The great lie of social media has been to claim it shows us the world. And the follow-on deception: That their technology products bring us closer together. In truth, social media is not a telescopic lens ó as the telephone actually was ó but an opinion-fracturing prism that shatters social cohesion by replacing a shared public sphere and its dynamically overlapping discourse with a wall of increasingly concentrated filter bubbles. Social media is not connective tissue but engineered segmentation that treats each pair of human eyeballs as a discrete unit to be plucked out and separated off from its fellows. Itís a trypophobicís nightmare. Or the panopticon in reverse ó each user bricked into an individual cell thatís surveilled from the platform controllerís tinted glass tower. Everyone needs a break right? Right? Luckily for me, I only have one final after the meetup.

My last final is the Thursday before and I have family in Roswell, so Atlanta would be great. Only a ~7 hour drive and maybe I can sneak over to Six Flags.

Great! I hope to see you there. I am designing a simple novelty cap and maybe a tshirt. I'll have more details when I post the RSVP form which should be later this week or next week. Still a long way to go, but I want to get all the details sorted so I can study for my finals come April.

Bump. About a month away. RSVP if you want a shirt or keycap so I can estimate how many I need to order. I'm a college student and I really don't want to be sitting on a bunch of keyboard shirts.

So I thought that this was going to be a keyboard event.

Is it a larger vintage computer gathering with the keyboard section in a corner somewhere?

what's the difference.. ?

It's like going to a farmer's market,  and there might be a home made something something section ..

It's all the same category.

We're not really in the corner. We have plenty of space and about 40 people have confirmed attendance.

Are we going to have any issues lugging our personal keyboards in and out of the museum? Also - do we need to bring any tables or will they have enough for us?

There should not be a problem with bringing personal keyboards. Be sure to have some label with your keyboards, especially if they are vintage. There should not be a problem with tables. I am keeping track of the number of people RSVPing and planning accordingly. We currently have 40 people RSVP'd and I had only requested 8 large tables, so I will need to contact the event organizers.

It was interesting, not exactly what I was expecting. A smaller gathering for keyboards only would have been much better.

My decision to bring ancient beige 1980s-90s gear was good because the overwhelming majority of the other stuff was tiny modern Cherry and Topre keyboards.

I brought an F-122 with floss mod, a Northgate Omnikey 101 with blue Alps transplant, NMB Hi-Tek black "Space Invaders", and a Laser board with white SMK clicky MX mount caps. I was hoping to introduce some of the younger folks to things they might not have seen before.

The most common comment was "I have never tried blue Alps before" and the Model F and clicky Space Invaders got a fair amount of action as well. There were a few people who liked the SMKs, so maybe I achieved some more exposure for them.

I brought my laptop so that people could actually type, but there was no power available (huh? this space used to be a CompUSA store!) so with multiple keyboards going my battery ran down before the show was over.

Thanks to Chris and everyone for putting it together.
