[IC] Modern Dasher D60 (GB open)
« on: Sat, 05 May 2018, 10:03:06 »

Hello, Ramiel here. I like vintage keyboards.

I bought a lot of vintage keyboards from ebay and Taobao in the recent two years. However, I then realized most vintage keyboards are too large for daily usage. SSK is much more expensive than normal Model M not just because they're more rare, but also more people like smaller keyboards nowadays. So I started buying 60% or 80% custom keyboards from last year.

The look of old Data General Dasher keyboards has always fascinated me. I just came up with the idea of making a 60% custom keyboard with the retro esthetics of dasher keyboard series.

Renders
More

I'm considering to make a prototype. It must be thick and heavy. Brass plate and large brass weight. MAO bottom case and dark blue ano top case.

What do you think?

Prototype

That white looks gorgeous, IMHO. Besides, it’s truer to the original thing.

For now I only have the design and the render. Blue top and white bottom is the only color I would choose for myself. MAO white should be pretty good for the bottom case. I still have no idea if the factory can make the dark blue color I like tho. Will figure it out.

If it goes to the GB stage, there will be more colours for sure.

It was almost certainly made from ABS plastic.

The keyboard in the first picture is Dasher D1, which is an early model of dasher series. The top panel is painted steel plate. I'm not sure about the white bottom case since I don't happen to own a D1.
I know the bottom cases on D2, D100 and D200 are made from thick plastic tho.

Do want! I saw this machine at the Powerhouse Museum in sydney and immediately googled for cases haha :D

Any chance you could please support DZ60 split spacebar layouts? Or maybe a way to replace the blue plate?

Here's the DZ60 main plate (B):

The blue plate is just a panel. There's a switch plate inside. I'm still working on the plate design and mounting approach.

I don't want to "support" DZ60 split spacebar layout. Plates cut for each switch are much better than swiss cheese plates. I may order several splitspacebar plates with cheaper materials such as carbon fiber or FR-4. At least I can send you the plate file.

No that’s cool, I just had the wrong term. I’m already buying the regular dz60 plate from kbdfans. if the blue panel lets everything pass through or can be cut/modified it’s all gravy :)

This is wild, I love the look of it! A centered usb cable hole would be a nice addition to it imo, but I'm not sure what the cable placement on the original dasher board is. However, I'm fine with whatever and will be following the project closely :D

Very cool. Interested in a 60% variant. The plan is that normal 60% PCBs and plates are supported, or will it come with a PCB and plate?
I'm also a fan of the split space layout and would love to drop in my BananaSplit.

The plan is to provide case and plate by default. Case will have two styles, GH60 style and 7u HHKB style.

The plate will be top mounted so normal 60% plate won't be supported. Oh wait, maybe it can?

Normal 60% PCB will be supported but I may provide hot swappable PCBs in blue color as extra parts.

Seems there are a lot of work to do LOL

I really like this. I would consider running white mao base + red, blue, and green inner colors. A dark-ish version of those colors should generate a lot of interest from the potential keyset pairings. Purple might not be a bad idea either.

It turns out the bezel is too large that normal 60% PCBs' connector are too far away from the front side. I decide to add a USB C female connector on the case it self. The female connector on the case will be connected to the female connector on the PCB through a short cable.

It will add a little cost but it will make the design closer to perfect. In this way I can modify the connector position similar to the OG design like this:

The case will support both tray mount and top mount.

The plates I'm gonna provide are top mount MX only plates. The PCB will be hot swappable and MX only.

ALPS is supported if you are able to source the pcb and tray mount plate by yourself. They are available on the market afaik.

Maybe? The legal issue is a concern to me because I know nothing about it. Data General company has been long gone tho.

I said the stickers won't be considered as a part of the project just because of this reason.

I will make some stickers for myself. I'm pretty sure that's legal at least.

Did you consider having the connector recessed and just having a slot for the cable to run out like the original (having a slot, I'm guessing the original cable was soldered or crimped).

Yes, I have considered hiding the cable connector under the case. The cable will be still detachable.

However, the slot under the case must be large enough to support all possible connectors. I don't think it's a good idea to cut a slot large enough for Yarbo connectors.

I'd love to see a WKL top if this gets to GB. I've finally got the funds for a heavy metal custom and this would suit me well.

Any updates on this?

I have made two prototypes but they all have problems. The first one's height was not correct. The second one's bottom was too thin. It will come out eventually but only after I have a perfect prototype.

Wish the blue color would be a perfect match to Dasher keyset, and the HHKB layout with 7u spacebar could be supported.

ISO support?

split spacebar support would be nice.

The case will support almost all of the 60% PCBs in theory. I can't provide too many plate options. You can use third-party PCBs and plates with standoffs tho

65% or HHKB layout would be nice..
The OG has a space-bar only bottom row, a more modern approximation would be the HHKB layout.

You could also consider the CA 66 layout for HHKB + 65%. I think it would also look nicer/closer to the OG's full size.
Personally I like both 65% as well as 60%, however with 60% you have better PCB compatibility and cost savings...

CA66 layout is very nice but I don't want to risk being called a copycat. I don't think copying layout is wrong but I know someone disagrees.

I like 60% over 65% cause the last column keys on 65% can be accidentally pressed.

The proto will obviously be a 60% but can we expect this to change to a 65% keyboard? Many people requested it (me included)?

I really don't want to discard the current 60% version and change it to 65%. I've ordered two prototypes for D60. The first one had a lot of problems. All the problems have been fixed in the second prototype. Also, I have a source for hot-swappable 60% PCBs and they don't have 65% versions rn. Changing to 65% is too risky and unnecessary for me.

In my opinion, slightly more recessed caps, so that a few millimetres of their base is in the body of the keyboard,  would be even better.

Totally agree.  I would put the base of the keycaps about 1.5mm below the surface of the blue border section.... maybe even more.  Can you give us a photo of just straight on?  Like what you would see if you were seated in front of the board and typing on it?  Also, are there plans for any kind of badge in the top right?  I feel like it needs something.

Here is the side view. The bottom of the keycaps is aligned with the edge.

This is a universal 60% case. There won't be a split spacebar pcb but it's possible to have a split space plate option. Which layout do you want? The DZ60 spacebar layout?

I guess not everyone wants to choose the og dasher colorway and put SA dasher/dancer caps on it. There will be multiple color options.

That's also what I was thinking of. The problem is the color limitation of the aluminum/brass badge. The sticker can have multiple colors but the badge can only have one. I printed some stickers with different colors to match the colors of cases and they look good. I don't know how the single color badge will look like. I'll do a render and see.
