Vim Keycaps

I had some Vim keycaps made, what do you think?

I'm going to get the letter legends smaller, I think.

Edit:
Pictures of the final product included here too.

Looks pretty good!

The font is a bit off but I think that's just because of what's used with SA Retro.

If I were to try this, I would get the color green you got, the font to match what's on SA Retro, and DIY side-print the arrow icons.

I like the idea of front-printed arrows, but I wanted to match the style of the original ADM-3A terminal, which is the basis for Vim's HJKL nav.

More info here.

After sleeping on it, I am definitely going have the font made smaller, I just hope SP doesn't rake me over the coals by charging me the full price again. I bought a bunch of the Vim Caps Lock replacement keys, so hopefully selling those will offset this (probably) failed experiment.

hey, i definitely want in if you end up doing some kind of custom order from SP.  I unfortunately missed out on the VIM SA ESC (but got the capslock key from symbiosis..) ultimately I would like something to replace my leader key, capslock, and esc.

how did you order a bunch of the vim capslocks?  did you order a bunch of symbiosis kits or were you somehow able to make a custom order?

Hmm, you mean you made a custom order for them from SP? How much does that stuff cost for something like this? I guess the vim molds were already made so a new one would be a completely different thing?

Hello all, I've been traveling and missed these new replies till now. I am glad to see there's been some interest!

I paid the regular tiered price for the caps locks (x cost per number of keys purchased), but on top of that I had to pay a couple hundred dollars for the new hjkl legends (four keys x two profiles).

The good news is that Melissa sent me a new set of keys with smaller letter legends, because she made a mistake in putting the order in. It's been said before, but she's great. I'm still away from home, but I'll take new pictures once I'm back.

I bought a bunch of extras, hoping I can make back my investment. I have everything in hand and will be selling them soon. I'd love to get some input on what you think a good price is (I'll also sell the caps lock separate from the hjkl keys, in case folks don't want both).

Thanks! that's really interesting to me because I've been thinking about getting a novelty with a custom legend made myself. Guess I should contact SP to find out more.

Love the HJKL. Don't really know about the pricing, guess looking at what WASD sets and novelties typically cost is a good start.

I figured GMK's MOQ would be too high, but I have considered JTK (once they finish their initial runs) or Gateron. I would like these in Cherry profile, for sure. I'll see how well these sell and maybe try that next.

I bet the more feasible option would be Gateron in dye sub. JTK is not taking custom orders at the moment.

Agreed. I'll have to figure out how to talk to them about custom orders. A brief search of the interwebs didn't bear any fruit last time I tried.

Alright, I am prepping this for launch (on a separate thread in the classifieds, so as not to anger the mods).

I plan to go for a sales price of $6 for the Caps Lock replacement, $10 for the set of HJKL keys, and $15 for both. I have SA and DSA profiles. The keys are already on hand, so shipment will be pretty much right away (waiting for packing materials to arrive).

Hopefully this strikes a good balance between a fair price and one that allows me to recoup some of the money it cost me to have these made. If I more than break even, I'll roll that money into a couple other projects I have in mind.

SP does make these, true, but they didn't have any of the Caps Lock replacements in stock at the time (they still don't, as far as I can tell), so I placed an order.

This is more than the VIM Key, it's the HJKL keys as well.

As Steezus said (thank you!), the HJKL keys are the different thing here. I had the idea I wanted the keys from the ADM-3A terminal, but in Vim green, and these are the result.

Yes, please be sure to update on this thread when you post the the buying thread. At such a low price there's no way I can't buy a set or two.

I will definitely post here as soon as I am ready to go. Thank you for the support!

Hello all, I have a huge box of packing materials in my basement, and a Shopify store created, so I am ready to sell my extras. I am setting up a classifieds post, but the site to purchase is at vimcaps.com. I need to take some better pictures and make things a little prettier, but it should be functional. Let me know if you have any trouble or feedback. I *think* Shopify will make everything easier, but it is an experiment too, so please let me know if it sucks.

Ordered a set of each -- expect you'll see a bit of pushback on that shipping, though -- $10.00 is a little stiff for shipping a few keycaps. Good luck with the sale!

Thank you! I saw that about the shipping, and I apparently missed the shipping field. I thought it was going to fill the shipping based on actual location. It looks like yours will just be a couple bucks, and I will refund you the difference when I make sure I did it right.

Sweet! No need to refund the difference on mine since I did buy seeing the shipping as it was. I expect you'll sell out fast now that that's changed, though. Thank you again for making these available!

I'll also set a 50% (at least) refund bounty to the first purchaser who gets me better product photos than the crappy ones I have on the vimcaps.com site now.

These are really nice but I'm not sure whether I will ever have MX with caps in these profile. I was however looking for these before I went Topre.

I'm looking for some vim advice. I learnt to touch type at the same time I learnt to use vim. The issue is that I learnt to touch type in colemak so I have become semi-proficient in vim but in colemak. For me my HJKL position is a little unorthodox. I know there are addons that map qwerty to colemak vim positions but this is slightly redundant for me as I never really learnt vim with those positions. But on the other hand there are benefits to using the qwerty positions. HJKL for example is very accessible in qwerty, arguably more than colemak.

Is anyone else in a similar situation. I might still buy these as I do like the look of some nice legends.

I'm not sure there's a easy answer for Vim and Colemak, but I think Aimee makes a good argument for going with the flow and using HJKL in their normal Colemak positions. It doesn't do much for the aesthetics if you used these keys, so I guess I am doing the opposite of making a good sell...

I just order the full set (capslock x2) and the hjkl as a Dvorak vim user. Although some of the aesthetic is ruined, the concept is still good. I know I'll always have the caps lock replacement on my keyboard. The direction keys will probably rotate through.

Woudn't just getting sliders be the better option?

I think it would be too costly and time consuming to made a topre version, ctrlalt should be having sliders going up on their store soon anyways.

That would be a decent compromise for anyone who wants to switch their Topre board over to a DSA or SA set. I would love to have an option for someone who just wants to replace five keys, but I think you're probably right, it would be too costly and time consuming to create Topre versions.

I'm thinking about stocking up on some blank keysets colors I can't find elsewhere (but want for myself). My question, for those of you who bought Vim Caps, is whether you would want to add the caps as they are now to an otherwise blank set, or would you instead want blank, Vim green caps and HJKL keys.

In other words, does a board with blanks have to be all blank to look good?

I'm not expecting you to have followed my website changes and cash flow travails (mostly took place on Reddit, since that was where 95% of my orders originated), but my store used to have Shopify as a backend. When it did, shipping to Germany cost $13-something to which I added $1.50 for shipping materials and "handling."

Since I moved to PayPal as a backend, shipping is cheaper, allowing me to do "free shipping" for US and international orders, but I made the change at the same time as I made a general price hike. Selling Vim keycaps is not a good business, and I didn't really expect it to be.

I'm sorry you feel cheated. Send me back the keycaps and I will refund you the full purchase price.
