How do these differ from Nixie tube clocks? I'd be interested, but could you make it a 6-tube design instead? That would be more interesting to me to see the seconds.

Numitrons are essentially filaments like in lightbulbs versus discharge of a cathode and gas. I personally chose the numitrons because there was a pre-existing open source project for it and that it uses lower voltages.

I personally want a 6-tube design, however the PCB I chose doesn't really support that, and I don't want to learn how to make changes to a pre-existing PCB or have to make a new one. This would also require rama (or someone else, probably myself) to make edits to the case, and finally, I am going to source the tubes from eBay, so it will be quite annoying to have to get more tubes. HOWEVER, if there is enough interest, I will be fine with doing all of the above.

I've always wanted one of those!!
Me too!
And for 70 dollars it'd be pretty hard to pass up IMO.

I hope so, I'm 100% in for one if it is - would look sick next to all my tube amps.

Probably not, I had some issues with the PCB files, and it's hard for me to fix it myself. Seeing that there is enough interest, there's a slim chance it may happen though.

ANOTHER REVIVE!

I'm determined to actually finish one of my stupid projects.....

Since there is enough interest, I will definitely try to do this one.

NOW TO BE IN VFD FORM!

VFDs are different than the previously proposed Numitrons as they are not filaments, but instead are based on cathodoluminescene.

VS

Right now, once the maker of the PCB (www.nixieclock.org) responds to me, I will begin to make a case. I have still not decided between acrylic or aluminum. Aluminum will be more expensive, however I believe it will look the nicest with this type of vacuum tube. Please let me know so I can begin ASAP. I will post a rough approximation of what I want the aluminum case to look like soon.

The aluminum looks great, but how much would it cost?  I figured the ~$70 would be for the acrylic one.

If pricing is still reasonable for aluminium then for sure that'd be cooler than acrylic.

Aluminum... but can we keep it simple on the design?  Milled aluminum can get stupid expensive.

I'm very interested in this. Honestly at $70 i'd most likely be in, below $60 or below 100% in, $100 or above definitely out.

Bad news, just the parts alone will cost about 90 dollars. I'm not sure if I will continue to do this project, or just do the project for those that are willing to pay custom keyboard prices for a clock......

i think its a good idea, but theres already things available for much cheaper then the $90 lowest just for parts your saying.

https://www.tindie.com/products/RobG/msp430-nixie-clock-kit/

https://www.tindie.com/products/celzey11/iv-9-numitron-tube-clock-/

https://www.tindie.com/products/mazevedo/nwts-ntp-sync-over-wi-fi-for-nixie-clocks-kit/

Not sure if these would work as well, but yea. Maybe its better to put a group buy in for one of these on the cheap and then do a groupbuy for a better case to house it in and still save some money in the end?

2 of those are for nixie tubes (not what this project is for) and the other is only 4 tube rather than a 6 tube
