America is a young country and for whatever reason our core value is "kill the brown-skins!" I am so hoping we grow out of that crap, like some thought of Clinton as a failed prez because he didn't have a war, only military actions, during his 2 terms.

If we keep overstepping our bounds, someday North Korea and China (or someone else) will come over here, take our guns from us and show us what occupied freedom is. I love all those rednecks who have bomb shelters full of guns and they actually believe they could take out a squad of Marines like they'd just fall over. More guns do not equal better killing when everyone is fat and drunk.

So, "America, Fuc k you!"

Read the rest of my posts - I have said NASA held the space exploration back more than helped it. Commercial space travel will push everything forward.

And, since I sit on American soil right now, and know lots of the idiots I spoke of, I'll say and feel whatever I want, until we get taken over. Then I'll have to say whatever they want me to say.

FTFY ;)

The U.S. is a really nice country, which I have traveled extensively but for some reason any criticism on it is 'not done' or only done between friends.
Even an American that lives in the country has to start with a list of things that the U.S. does well before being able to put down any mild criticism. (Like this guy)
There are just a few things that might not make sense if you compare it to the rest of the world. Like the unusually high percentage of religious people (well portrayed here btw) for a developed country or the waste of energy.

But it's all good.

The U.S.A. is a superpower and therefore they can afford it.
Coming from a former superpower I can tell that even when the U.S. loses that status it will still be powerfull, but other countries will be the ones to tell what is hot or not.

One thing I love about the U.S. is their national parks and how they handle those. Good signs and information everywhere so even a novice can walk in them, but still wild enough that even someone who wants to do some serious hiking can do it.  :)

America is really good on recreation. Citizens can move around as we see fit and the national park system is very good. Someone said we make good games, and that's true. It's the wastefulness I don't like. Like Hunter S. Thompson said, "Americans drive themselves to death in huge, gas guzzling cars."

I think if most Americans wouldn't be so greedy and wouldn't so lovingly embrace the consumerist lifestyle, the rest of the planet would think more of us. And our military actions are usually trying to stop oppression, but it is done through oppressing others. I think that is why we are seen as meddlesome.

But the thing I like most about America is our version of English. American English is a very expressive language where you can use passive language and still make a valid point forcefully (even though I don't do that ...). I've spent my life in front of keyboard, typewriter or pen and pad writing in this variant of English, so it would be very hard for me to write the way I do in another language.

Now, reading this compared to my above posts, I have to say this: NASA dropped the ball on space exploration, but it was privatized and commercialized which I said will save it. So that American greed I so loath will fuel space travel, which I am all about. Kind of a double edged sword, huh? Any country on this planet has good and bad, just like every race of human has both. I just think it's time to reel it in and strive for balance instead of more more more.

Well... full disclosure, I do in fact plan on moving to another country one day, when I have the financial means to do so. Also, I was born and raised here in the states.

Also, the mass' skepticism of the government and of those in power, and their expression thereof is implied in the Constitution. In fact, it's expected. Read: Amendments 1 and 2 of the Constitution.

To say that Americans can't be displeased with American government/society, and can't express that, goes against what you supposedly uphold. The Constitution was made with the expectation that America is developed with this skepticism and doubt of those in power.

Also, I think MMB is being too srs about people who are srs about the US. Just sayin'.

When did this thread get all ... substantive?

America is a great place to live.  I'm proud of our achievements.  We've had our share of screw-ups and injustices, like any nation.  We have our share of cultural problems, too.

That said, I don't have a lot of patience for the vitriolic anti-American sentiment that one often encounters on the Internet (not calling anyone out in particular, on this thread or elsewhere).  It usually indicates vanity and parochialism.

It usually indicates vanity and parochialism.

So what do you call pro-American sentiment?

I'm not anti-American. I'm anti-pro-American. As in, everybody, and every nation in this world should be treated with the same regard and respect as one another.

When someone says, they are "proud" to be an American, it's an expression of America's "greatness." That's vanity, IMO.

It's possible to be patriotic without being a pompous ass.  I think it's good to love your country, in general.  The kind of mindless pro-American sentiment that I assume you're talking about I would lump under "cultural problems".

I guess this is where we will have to agree to disagree. It's not possible to express patriotism without implying that that country is better than another. IMO, there is already a problem with saying, I'm "proud" to be (of some country).

I hate the "if you don't vote you can't complain!" zinger with a passion.  I am voting tomorrow, not because my individual vote matters statistically, but because political engagement is part of what being a citizen means.  Informed non-voting is equally valid, in my view.  Apathetic non-voting is the problem.

We all know the people do not pick the prez, but we have a say in the rest of it, though mainly in local elections.

And Computer Lab, you can register at the polls (at least in my state) which is what I plan on doing. You only need to bring a photo ID from your state or your school and proof you live where you say you do. A lease that covers election day is sufficient.

Ok, I'll agree that we disagree then.  I think what you're saying is an overly simple way of viewing the world and human emotion.

Saying I love something does not mean I don't love other things.  I don't think implying that one country is better than another is a problem, in general (though by saying that I am proud to be an American, I am _not_ saying that America is the best country, or is better than any other particular country).

I don't think it works like that in my town.  According to my town I would have had to register by last Thursday at 8pm.  IDK, I guess Connecticut is just stupid...

I'm in Wisconsin, so your laws are probably way different than mine. Tell you what, I'll vote for you!

I guess this is where we will have to agree to disagree. It's not possible to express patriotism without implying that that country is better than another. IMO, there is already a problem with saying, I'm "proud" to be (of some country).

But... see... this is one of those, "no offense, but... I'm going to say something offensive anyway" statements. You can't, by definition, be proud of something, unless you believe that it is better than something else.

And, you think implying that one country is better than another country is not bad? But what happened to all those things you said about anti-American sentiment? So you can say America is better than one country, but someone can't say anything bad about America? There's a contradiction there.

But, anyway. We'll agree to disagree.
