[IC] Isla - Updated 22/06/2021
« on: Sat, 15 August 2020, 11:55:45 »
Isla

Discord for updates: https://discord.gg/eGnjxGx

The design:

As the Isla is my first foray into keyboard design, I’ve tried to keep things externally as simple and classy as possible. The design is heavily inspired by the OTD Koala as some of you may notice, featuring its signature side profile and uniform bezels. As for the name, there’s not really a story; it’s named after someone I knew when I was younger.

Status:

Final prototyping round on hand. Awaiting a few components for testing before proceeding to group buy phase, tentatively late July.

Images:

* weight will be blank for production units

more pics to be added closer to GB

Changelog between final prototype and production:

- slightly larger JST channel
- slightly larger tolerances with plate and PCB against case
- tighter bump-on cutouts
- minor internal tweaks

Details:

Vendor: prototypist.net
Mounting: o-ring tray
Typing angle: 4.5 degrees

Front height: ~18mm
Colours: wine red, black, silver
Plate options: copper, aluminium, CF
Layout compatibility: https://imgur.com/8VuqNPV
Sale format: FCFS
Units: probably around 200, open to increasing should they sell out fast
Price: TBD, based on factory quote closer to GB
GB date: late July

The kit:

- aluminium 6063 case
- plate(s)
- copper weight
- h60 PCB by hineybush (QMK/VIA support)
- USB-C daughterboard
- JST cable
- various screws (torx)
- 50A nitrile rubber o-ring
- custom bump-ons

Questions:

Q: Poly?
A: No

Q: ISO?
A: No Yes

Q: WKL? HHKB?

A: No, the design isn't able to accommodate these

Q: Will this be compatible with other PCBs?

A: The design is based around the h60, and the design requires some of the cuts seen on there

Special thank-yous to:

Jae: for agreeing to help me with this project back in May and bearing with my endless questions
Elaine: for the design advice

Neat -- how far recessed is the USB port?

1.25mm from the end of the daughterboard to the case edge, and a further 5mm from there to the outer face of the case

4.5 degree typing angle, very interesting. I wish the curve was a little steeper like the Koala but probly not possible without the extra row. GL

Thank you for all the support everyone <3

Regarding a sound test, I won’t be recording any with this proto. However, with the final proto I’ll do one myself or perhaps ask Jae (who has far superior recording equipment) to do a build stream.

Thank you all for the kind words! I'll update when the second prototype has been ordered. As for pricing, I've had a lot of people ask but I'd rather not give an estimate right now until quotes are received and we figure out logistics.

will there be NA/Asia vendors?

Though I appreciate the interest, unfortunately not.

Nothing confirmed quite yet (this'll happen closer to the GB) but from the poll I posted:

~ 37% PC
~ 30% Brass
~ 23% FR4
~ 10% Others (CF, various plastics)

Right now it's looking like a polycarbonate plate will be offered, though as I said this may be subject to change.

Will the tray mount posts be removable (similar to the newer rounds of Mekanisk boards) or fixed? I am really interested in this mounting style but wonder how it would work with the posts. Wouldn't the plate just sit up against those posts and keep it from flexing? Please correct me if I am wrong. I know the Unikorn also does this but it's always confused me how it would work with fixed posts.

Also will this require snap in stabs or have you found a way to use screw in stabs without interfering with the O-ring?

I am very interested in this board. This mounting style intrigues me but unfortunately I lost on the raffle for the Moontower and Ogre.

To answer your first question, besides the optional screws, the only contact with the case is the gasket resting on the outer posts. Instead of the PCB being directly on the tray posts, it's held in place by the gasket - the tray 'posts' barely come up off the bottom of the case. So, the tray posts are indeed fixed but it makes no difference.

You will need a snap-in stab for 2u backspace (and possibly spacebar, though I can test this with the next proto), however I believe the rest of the stabilisers can be screw-in.

The sleek design and typing angle make this keyboard such a beauty, love the wine red colour. Just curious but is there a special reason why you chose those three colours specifically over others?

No special reason, I just like those colours man. Was originally debating between an older kustom-esque red and this, but a few friends convinced me to do wine red. I think it was the right choice.

Also just a general update:

Looking to order the proto next week. Sorry for the slight delay - we've been waiting for a couple different o-rings to ship to us here in the UK. Once I've tested them in the proto I have on hand right now and decided which to go for, we'll go ahead and order the next prototype. It will be black, and I've asked for an anodisation sample of the navy I want to do at the same time.

Hello all,

The second prototype has been ordered. It will be aluminium 6063, anodised black, have a brass plate, and be mine.

There are a number of changes between first prototype and what hopefully will be the design used in the GB, which I'll roughly disclose here for the sake of transparency:

- plate external radius increased marginally (may add some additional cuts to this too before ordering a bit more locally)
- front height lowered marginally
- USB height raised even more marginally
- cable routing changed slightly into having two levels
- added some engraving beneath the weight
- internal top chamfer decreased
- USB hole chamfer decreased
- bottom chamfer increased to be consistent with the top
- gasket mounting points changed

Regarding the last change, the previous mounting points led to some problems with the 50A o-ring towards the top-left and top-right corners, as the points in those corners were significantly further away from the left/right case edges than the ones on the bottom. I discussed this with Elaine and she kindly let me use the Unikorn's mounting points as well as giving some very valuable design advice which I am very grateful for.

OP did say it's name was based on a childhood friend... Perhaps this is an homage to that friend haha. All jokes aside I wanted to ask if there's a possibility of half plate, I want a flexy baby, nothing too stiff... like that logo.

This is probably a stupid question, but will the pcb fall out of the keyboard gets flipped over using the gasket mount?

not a stupid question - the fit with the o-ring is tight and the friction of the rubber against the case keeps it in

also the weight won't be changing lmao

I really like the low key, clean and elegant look of this board. This might be my first higher end case provided I can get in on it, love low angle boards too.

Any chance we can get more pics of the assembly process or an "exploded view" per say of the prototype?

I can for sure try something like this for the next prototype - I’ve actually just gotten a manu pic of it this morning, as it’s finished anodising.

As a general update, it’s been slightly delayed as this is really the 3rd prototype now, since the 2nd one had some issues that were only discovered before anodising. We’re hoping to have the new prototype early next week, and once it’s built I can try make either a very comprehensive album or a video illustrating how to put the board together.

You have no plan to run hhkb layout, but have it on the layout compatibility picture. It is confusing.

It's probably because the PCB supports that layout. Since the case is mounted using either a friction fit or tray mount, it's made with a unibody design, so it can't have a top case which will provide the blockers.

Oh man... now that I've seen it, I can't unsee it.

I'm down for a **** on my weight though lol
OP did say it's name was based on a childhood friend... Perhaps this is an homage to that friend haha. All jokes aside I wanted to ask if there's a possibility of half plate, I want a flexy baby, nothing too stiff... like that logo.

Looks good, Tom. Provided shipping isn't bonkers from prototypist, I'm in. Will you have any youtubers/streamers do a build before group buy? July is coming up fast! Always like to see it in action before committing. Lamenting not going in on Carolina Mech's palmetto, so nice to know I have options.

Lulzthax and Jae will both have prototypes to build, though when that is is dependent on when we receive prototype PCBs - I already had an h60 on hand so I was able to build mine when it came in. I do understand this sentiment so should we not have those in by some point mid-July we'll delay the GB a little.

Thought I’d give this thread a little update since we have of course missed the original July date. We have been waiting on PCBs for the prototype round (my personal unit is built with an older one I had on hand), so once we have those in and everyone has received their unit we can proceed. Thanks for your patience.
