GB July 24 - August 24
GB Post

Hi everyone, welcome to the interest check for GMK JAGS.
Change log and thoughts on R5 are in first reply to this thread.

Interest check form: https://forms.gle/8Yya3ZLNDY9y1jPE8

This set uses WS2 for the primary legends. All other colors were selected from the RAL Classic and RAL Design catalogs.

Below are the current iterations of the kits I would like to run. Kits are subject to change based on feedback.

Base:

This kit provides compatibility for 40%, 60%, 65%, 75%, TKL, 1800, and full-size boards.

Previous base kit:
More

Hangul:

The sublegends are meant to be UV printed. I prefer the look of accented sublegends over doubleshot here, but may opt for doubleshot if quotes (assuming this set makes it to that stage) are too expensive.

Extension:

The legends on the windowed keys are UV printed.

Spacebars:

Includes accented bars and Alice bars. The extra B necessary for the Alice layout is also in the kit.

R5:

The R5 kit includes compatibility for 7u bottom rows. Slimmed the kit down by excluding mods for 6.25u bottom rows to keep the price more reasonable.

Collaborations:

RAMA WORKS x GMK JAGS
Both caps are anodized aluminum with enamel infill.

Accent:

Mod:

Keebstuff x GMK JAGS

The plan is to offer a MDPC-X sleeved and a stainless steel sleeved version. LEMO is cerakoted Aztec Teal.
Below is a peek at the MDPC-X version. More pics of the cerakoted LEMO color and other things can be found on Keebstuff's Instagram.

Deskmat:

I don't think the hobby really needs more of these, but if people would really like to see a mat that matches the colors used in the set, I can try to get something done.

Change log:
  • 03/03/2021: Added 3-key 40s support to the base kit.
  • 04/30/2021: Add R5 kit to the proposed kits. Announce vendors.
  • 05/25/2021: Fix mistake in R5 kit render.
  • 07/19/2021: Add collab renders, pricing, and gb date.

R5...
More
Updated the kit to include 1u Supers. The idea of including this kit has grown on me quite a bit. I've wanted to try R5, but didn't want to buy sets that were forcing it in base without offering an alternative.
Will update main post soon.

agreed... consider moving b to base. having no doubleshot keys will lower price of the kit as well.

Modo on steroids. I vibe w it.

B in the spacebar kit isn't a big deal, since you'll need that kit for alice anyways.

I personally have never tried R5 so I did not include it in the initial kitting. Though, I'm not against possibly adding R5 keys into a kit somewhere if enough of the community feels strongly about it.

I also really love r5 so maybe that's not a bad place to stick the row 5 keys?

like the colors, hope this runs.

The key w/ R5 is to separate wanting R5 from wanting it instead of R4 in the base: add r5 to the extension kit for both 1.25u x7 and tsangan and the arrows, the extension kit will be at least 80$ and the sales are gonna hurt. Some will want it for the shine through, some for the macros, some for the R5, and not enough of us trade to make it worthwhile. I like R5 even though it adds cost to a base kit. I'd probably buy anyways w R4. I'm not buying a giant extension kit.

So everyone who wanted R5: you want in the base? you have to outnumber the people who say they won't buy it if R5 is there. Want it in the extension? Gotta be willing to pay 210+ USD before shipping for base and extension.

Ok, let's start...

40s People:
please consider adding the 3 most common 40% keycaps in base (1.75u r2 Backspace, 1.25u r3 Tab, 1.75u r3 Enter)
Obligatory: 40% keyboard support please.

As a non-40s user, the 3 key 40s support in base route has been on my radar for a little while now. It seems like a relatively harmless way to add at least SOME support for 40% users. However, I'm sure people from this part of the community would prefer a dedicated kit that would offer support for a bunch more layouts out there. While I really have no problem with working to put together a dedicated kit, I continue to get hung up on the issue of meeting MOQs. From what I have seen it takes an extremely popular set for the dedicated 40s kit to get enough love. What are people's preferences regarding 3-key support in base vs dedicated kit? Please let me know; I would like to know where your heads are at.

Regarding R5:
Currently, I would prefer to stick with R4 in base, but my initial thought was maybe adding R5 support to the extension kit. However, I feel that kit would then become really beefy and much more expensive than it should be as a result . Alternatively, I can look at a potential dedicated R5 kit? With this too, there is the problem of MOQ. If R5 were to be added somewhere, do people want mod sizes for both 6.25u and 7u bottom rows? Let me know.

Overall:
I'll draft up some kitting revisions to show some possible options for both of these requests. I will say that as a potential first time runner, I am a little bit wary of attempting to run too many kits, but I hope I can bring some options that people can look forward to.

Realistically, GMK prices for child kits are far too expensive. 40s users would have to pay an extra 50% on top of the base kit to get coverage for a board that will use half the keys included in both kits total. The three key system in base works very well as a standard because like, seriously, 90% of smaller boards (and 100% of all the premium 40% boards) get row coverage from just those three keys. It makes a ton of sense to be able to get the whole shebang in one go and be able to swap the set to other layouts without having to be like "aw darn a year ago I should have paid $50 for those two keys I needed".

+1 for adding the 3 40s keys to base, as you said it avoids concern for a child kit that misses MOQ frequently and is a relatively harmless addition. Those 3 keys would maximize the amount of weirdos who could get by with base and space bars while keeping additions to a minimum. Obviously it can get out of hand quickly if you try and cover every layout but those 3 will cover a vast majority of boards in the wild.

Well, R5 is more expensive than R4. So I think it's better to add more keys to cover more layouts rather than change to R5 and then you'll need to trim down the base to reduce the price.

Thanks for at least considering it. If R5 were added somewhere (I'd vote for a separate kit), I'd personally only be interested in a full winkeyless bottom row. After thinking about it more, I think lack of R5 would be enough to stop me buying the set, as much as I'm fond of it.

3 key 40s support is really the way to go.  Generally, you can expect ≈10% attach rates with GMK 40s kits. As such, I wouldn’t put the effort into kitting, rendering, and quoting a full 40s kit unless you expect to easily clear 1000 base sets.

would prob cop an R5 kit if it was run, but lack of R5 in the base certainly isn't a dealbreaker for me here.

While I don't want to be presumptive about MOQ and how big this set can get... I would agree that including 3 40s keys in base tends to be a much safer proposition and is preferable as a 40s user.

Big fan of the set overall and the alt alphas are great! 40s compat in base would make it a must-have

Thanks everyone for the feedback and words of affirmation. The comments here and in the Google Form are very helpful.

To the people interested in R5:
Since I decided against a dedicated 40s kit, and instead went with 3-key compatibility in base, I may have a kit for you all to be interested in soon. Currently working on legends so I can render my current plan for a possible kit.

I know it’s a bit niche, but if the R5 kit happens, 1.5U Super and 1U Alt would be a nice addition for Mac users.

Loving this, BTW. Nice work!

any chance for uniform r5?

Can't tell if serious or you don't know what "uniform" means.

But yeah adding row 5 to this would be amazing though I alone couldn't advise if it would be best accomplished with additional keys or replacing current mods.

It actually would not, you've already got 2xR3 1.75u keys you can use instead. Adding an R3 1.5u allows more boards to be physically compatible

if you are ok with Control or CapsLock to be where Enter is supposed to be. If the intention is to offer a R3 1.5u Enter, I think it is better to convert the R3 1.75u Control to an R3 1.75u Enter. My 2c.

As Izeri explained, this method is geared towards providing physical compatibility for some layouts. To my knowledge, this is the solution that members of the 40% Discord came to for getting compatibility for their boards without the need for a dedicated kit. I plan on keeping the 1.75u control as is since I know there are quite a few people who put control in the position of caps in their keymaps.

Now let's just scoot that second B key in there too and I think you're done.

Probably not in base, no. It is in the extension kit, though. However, I do understand it may be hard to justify buying an entire kit for 1 key so hopefully the rest of the kit would also be useful to people looking for R1 '='.

I don't think a second base kit would be too successful. I am neither a high profile enough designer, nor do I think that type of thing would have enough universal appeal to meet moq.

Colors look great. Great feedback on this set Kokallo

I really like the hangul, i hope we have base kit based on that

I don't think a second base kit would be too successful. I am neither a high profile enough designer, nor do I think that type of thing would have enough universal appeal to meet moq.

I think you are a smart designer though.

There is more Alice-Layouts than 40's and still some runners prefer not to include second B in base kit smh

whats the reason to have second b in the base if you still need to buy the space bars anyway?

Actually no. Decent kitting like Handarbeit R2 or Hazakura has all alice spacebars (including 2U) and second B in base kit. But even if there were no spacebars i still can use "0 Ins" keycap from numpad to cover my alice but its hard to find something to cover a second B.

The real question is: What's the reason to include 40's support in a base when 40's community is small af. I mean im okay with a separate kit for it, but not on a base kit, today there is over a 10 popular alice clones on a market and some runners still thinking that this is a minority that needs to buy a separate kit LOL its just driving me crazy when i see this. The hell with a spacebar but second B is a must in 2021 for any base kit

Sorry that I was unable to provide you with decent kitting, though I'm pretty sure you could technically cover an Alice board with just a base kit by leveraging shifts and the numpad 0s. I am opting for 3-key 40s support in the base kit because I think it kind of sucks to make 40s users buy an entire separate kit, from which they will probably only use a few keys, on top of a base kit. At least in this way users of these layouts can get physical coverage (some layouts will have incorrect legends in quite a few places, but compromises have to be made) for their boards in a kit that they are going to be purchasing anyway for comparatively low cost. For reference, I'm not a 40s user; I don't even like the layout. All that being said, there is still a chance that I move the second B to the base kit. I'm pretty sure there is a message mentioning that on the previous page.

Taking this reply as a chance for some general updates:
I am working on getting some more renders done. I've had some requests for other board colors, so I'm trying to get those along with some polycarb renders done. Unfortunately, it's taking longer than I'd like due to midterms, other university stuff, and just being bad at rendering in general.
The search for vendors is going well, and I hope to bring an update announcing them soon.
But yeah... I think that's about it for now. I appreciate all the comments/feedback.

Oh this is lovely, but I would need UK ISO.

Happy to have 1.5u Supers (and extra 1u Alt) in an extension kit. I would miss them in an R5 kit though.

Added a couple renders of the set on polycarb and black boards, and added the current list of vendors. Group buy date is not yet set in stone, so I can't say anything about that yet.
I am working on getting a couple of collabs to go along with the keyset. Among these, I would like to have a couple Rama artisans, but according to the info they have on their collaboration page, I cannot contact them until I have a GB date set.

Glad you guys are liking the set!

Honestly not even sure if I can share yet since I've only been given a "tentative date", but I'll definitely provide updates as I get them.

Other news: Waiting on quotes, but not sure how long it will take because I have no idea how productive GMK actually is (especially considering recent news of delays). I'm making progress on getting a RAMA cap as well. Excited to share future developments as the come in.

Please consider the hangul kit to be in the base instead, or make the hangul kit a base. Thanks.

Highly unlikely for this to happen. Kitting is more or less final with the possibility for minor tweaks based on quotes, if GMK ever decides they want to send them. The double base kit trend is really only viable with sets that have a high chance of selling an insane number of units.

Very nice. Hope hungul sublegends remain as UV printed.

Pricing permitting, the kit will definitely stay as is.

Important update: The IC post has been updated with pricing of kits and the GB for JAGS will begin on July 24th.
RAMA renders and a proto pic of the Keebstuff collab have also been added to the post for you all to take a look at.
Sorry for taking so long to provide an update. It took a while to get quotes and info back from GMK and other collaborators.

Hopefully people feel pricing is reasonable, but there is only so much we can do when working with MOQs like this. Going forward, if I ever venture into keyset design again, I'll probably slim down base kitting in order to get prices as low as possible. I'll also revise some of my greedy kitting decisions (mainly R5 and the extension kit), as these were mostly just me trying to get all of the things I personally wanted in a keyset made.

Personally, I think the kitting is overall good and has a lot of compatibility… this isn't a bad thing? If a super slim base kit is added, then we all end up paying more with extras child kits anyway.

The extension kit seems good to me. I do not think it is greedy at all. It could have extras keys… I mean, you could move some of the base kit stuff into here (like Zambumon kitting eg. GMK Purple Night, GMK Serika 2) but imo, this is fine either way. I'm just happy to get 1.5U Code keys in it as they were missing in the R5 kit. My HHKBs will be happy.

Good luck with GB. I am personally looking forward to it.

Glad you're looking forward to it.
___

I've added a chart to show vendor-specific pricing, so people can have a better idea of what that will look like.
Prototypist has also been added as a vendor for the UK. Big thanks to Jae for agreeing to run the set on such short notice. Hopefully, this makes the set more easily accessible for our UK community members.

This will be the last update until the GB thread is posted. Thanks for the comments and feedback until now.
