So I'm necro'ing this thread back from the dead and post the resolution of my main computer's screen: 3840x1600 (LG 38" curved). Bought it more than two years ago already and I'm super happy with it.

3440x1440 Dell AW3418DW, at 120Hz for my primary display.
2560x1440 AOC Q3279VWFD8 at 75Hz for my side display.

They're both IPS displays and having a 21:9 and a 16:9 is quite nice because it means I'm set whatever what I'm watching is filmed in

I have two random 1920x1080 displays that I have had kicking around mounted on arms flanking it, since they don't need to look fantastic, just display extra windows.

My main, and only, monitor has been with me for 12 years pretty much to the day - it's 1600x1200.  At the time I was pissed off because the police had covered my old one in fingerprinting dust which doesn't come off but looking back I'm glad as any later I'd have had to get a widescreen.

Nice. That's crazy. There must be some way to get that crap off. I have a bunch of ancient monitors still myself. Unfortunately, the CRTs are gone. I think I might have had some pretty high-end ones at some point, as people nobody wanted CRTs. I was using some Dell 4:3 monitors at work for their awesome stands for 4 or more years straight at work. Those are from something like 2003, still work great. I wanted a third monitor though since I'm monitoring/logging into a lot of different accounts within the same web application at once now with all of this virtual school tech support stuff, so I upgrade to some of those slightly less ancient silver and black Dell monitors since I already had 2 lying around and found one at a recycling place:



One's even 16:9. Don't know the resolutions offhand, didn't really care. Work monitors are work monitors.

I've finally moved away from the crt and now have Dell 30" displays at all locations running 2560x1600.  They're absolutely beautiful for viewing 2x 8.5x11 pages side by side, which is a lot of what I do.

I gave my dad my 1080p display so now he has two 1080p.  He's slowly learning how to use them too, but forgets how a lot of times.

You are right about those 30" Dell displays. It's really what I should have gone with instead of the cheaper 1920x1200 U2412M. Don't get me wrong, the U2412M is a great monitor.

But 2560x1600 at 28-30 inches is exactly what I need, and reading 2x pages side-by-side is a lot of what I do.

It's too bad that those large 16:10 Dell monitors are priced much, much higher than 16:9 1440P widescreens and even 4K monitors. Because 16:10 and 3:2 really cleans up for text-based work at any size, including large.

Lesson learned: buy what you need, and don't apologize.

Only IF you're willing to invest in 1k USD or more in GPU's, an RTX2080 Ti would have a hard time dealing with games at 4K 60Hz. I'd suggest waiting for Ampere, and AMD's big NAVI to see if 4k >60Hz is viable. Meanwhile, perfectly happy with 3440X1440 75Hz and 3840x1080 144Hz, at least I don't have to pony up 1kUSD or more for a GPU to run games at this res well enough.

We got lots and lots of games that'll do 4K 120 like csgo/LeagueOL/Dota/Overwatch on $300-500 cards.

Even middle ranged cards can push >100fps for games like Fornite and PUBG, but I'm talking AAA titles that are more demanding, like Resident Evil 3, Call of Duty Modern Warfare (RTX2080 and higher can do >60fps, up to ~80fps, nowhere near 120fps/144fps, Gears of War 5, etc with max PQ). I'd still advocate waiting for an Ampere or big NAVI, I may jump on a mid-high Ampere or NAVI, don't think I'm willing to pony up mucho deniros for a flagship card from either.......but then, I can't say till these cards are released come 3Q or later.

HDR isn't really all that standardized to begin with between games and/or tvs anyway, doesn't necessarily factor in at all.

Vega 64 has a good jump over my 1070 in synthetic benchmarks with G3D Mark.

You can straight decode the HDR on a lower card, but even then the output is buggy.

The best way on PC is to use Madvr to tonemap the HDR into an SDR signal, it's still HDR, but the carrier format is different.

Well, if you move on to a new display, for for a 21:9, 3440x1440 is ideal....not as hard on the GPU like a 4K display would be.

Problem is always these 4K movies. good scaling is extremely gpu intensive, and never quite as good as 1:1 pixel

Many peeps do it all on 1 setup, it's just easier.
