Title: [IC] Yves (Numpad w/ Function Row)
Post by: zekkin on Wed, 06 March 2019, 17:36:07
Yves
(Pronunciation: Eve [iv])

Yves is a simple sandwich mounted numpad w/ "function" row (i.e. 24 keys) in the same form factor as the TGR-Tris. Pair this with your favorite TKL for a timeless combination.

Background Information:

I've been getting into designing my own things since around August of this past year and while I do have some more substantial designs like a TKL (RBB) and 78-key (Murakumo) designed (both of which having been thoroughly teased in #kb-kustoms), they require more work and more resources before I would feel comfortable running a group buy. Between now and then however I'd like to present a numpad. These seem to be falling out of interest in favor of more dedicated macropad layouts so I'd like to bring it back.

In my opinion, running a group buy for this will not only bring back to the community something that I don't think many people (including myself) have had the chance to get, but it will also give me the opportunity to more closely ascertain what my capacity as well as capability is when it comes to future projects (i.e. group buys). With all that having been said...

     No.

4) Will you offer all sorts of colors like blue, purple, gold, or green?

     No.

5) Will you offer a diffuser and/or RGB features?

     No.

Yes, for this.
I've been hearing jokes on streams about a "Seulgi" board. Is that you, too?
If so, please put a bear on it. Or on this as a teaser.

USB-C?

Yes, the entire Voyager series (https://github.com/ai03-2725/Voyager) uses USB-C.

Give me a little while to get my blank PCBs soldered, need to order the components and then solder at my local maker space.

  • Limit: 10-15 units (10 is ideal, 15 is max capacity)

Please excuse my ignorance, but does this mean a maximum of 15 units will be produced in total? Gonna be lots of sad nerds out there if so. Probably me included haha.

Unfortunately, yes. There are two routes this can go down:

1) In-stock sale
2) Group buy

In the case of an in-stock sale, I'm only willing to front the cost of a maximum of 15 units plus various extras. In the case of a group buy, I need to set a very hard limit as to how many people will be able to participate -- this would be my first formal group buy and I refuse to overextend just so a few more people can get a board.

There's a common question that pops up in every IC thread that goes something like, "why aren't you producing as many boards as are ordered? why do you keep this game of artificial scarcity going?"

I might've touched on this in those threads where I found the opportunity, but since this is my design I'll address it immediately:

Let's say you design a keyboard that has 4 parts:

- Top
- Bottom
- Plate
- PCB

Let's say I get 20 of each part (5 extras for each to account for QC swaps) -- that's 80 separate pieces to inspect slowly and methodically. If something is really messed up, parts will need to be sent back to the manufacturer (in China) to be reworked or redone altogether. I am not Massdrop, I am not zFrontier, I am not an established vendor. I'm one guy living in a relatively small apartment in New York City.

What I'm getting at is that I do not have the capacity to do more than 10-15 units of QC, packing, and shipping. I want to deliver on what I set out to deliver on with this interest check, and that does not involve pushing the goal posts back to constantly appease the community wants.

Stuff

Makes sense dude. Thanks for the clarification. The way I see it is you're doing us a favor, so set whatever limit you want. Hope to get in on it, but I'll keep my panties un-bunched and without tears if I don't get in.

Hope it goes smooth dude!  :thumb:

the side profile pictures have sold me. i think i'd probably go for silver, depending on how the gray may look.

don't know much about the voyager pcbs but based on the github it seems it'll have qmk compatibility so it'll generally have the ability to remap keys?

No wireless because this pcb is designed by ai03. He even said that he won't make major changes.

Hi everyone, update time!

After spending some time with the prototype and picking at the details, I think these are the things I'll be changing, separated out into three categories:

Definite:
- Widen bump-on depression diameter from 8mm to 8.1mm.
- Reduce threading depth from 9mm to 6mm.
- Change from M2 to M2.5.
- Reduce plate/bottom piece tolerance from 0.25mm to 0.1mm.

Probably:
- Additional top/bottom mounting points (from 4 to 6). This will make sure the seam is fully flush all the way around the board.
- Reduce front face height by 1-2mm.
- Reduce back face height by 3-5mm.

Maybe:
- Center USB port.
- Switch to top mount.
- Add through weight. Always chasing after the TGR-Tris styling.

Miscellaneous Information:
- There will be another prototype round.
- Koala bottom is go.
- Expect a very nice, smooth finish.
- Colors are still WIP -- the black prototype I received for this is quite nice, but still not perfect. I got a prototype of another keyboard yesterday in silver and will need to communicate with the manufacturer to take a little better care with the parts (small scratches, hook marks, etc). Still pretty sure colors will be very very basic.

Since some of these ideas are a bit involved I may have to completely redo the design -- not a big deal, just will require a bit more time. If anyone has any ideas please do feel free to suggest anything. If you think any of the above changes wouldn't be good for you, make sure you let me know!

Center USB + possible addition of weight = closer to Tris styling.

The thing is that zekkin stated in the original post that the IC period would be 2-3 months, and asking if a project is dead well within his own timeframe seems like someone is trying to rush him. In the end I know that zekkin is doing this for himself/for fun so he doesn't have cater to anyone.

I'm guessing you didn't read the OP? It actually states that the IC period will be 2-3 months.

  • IC Timeline: 2-3 months
  • GB Timeline: Unknown

Addressing your other point -- an inquiry is, "hey, how's the project coming along?" -- not "is this dead?"

When I actually take the time to write out the changes I'm thinking of, receive little to no feedback, and then someone asks 'is this dead?' without really taking some time to take part in the interest check, it bothers me. When it's quite clear that someone just took a look at some pictures and then posts in the thread without actually reading anything, it sorta bothers me.

It does not take just a few minutes or even a couple of hours to produce a design I'm happy with. It takes dozens of hours and between my full time job, other hobbies, and desire to maintain my sanity, I take my sweet time. If this doesn't work for you, that's perfectly okay.

I'm not gonna lie, I don't remember anything from the initial post. It's been a solid couple of weeks since I've read it, that's my mistake.

I understand your frustration and admittedly I would feel the same after a couple of weeks of empty responses. That being said, I feel like it's almost expected to receive generic responses for ICs. Despite how much care you put in, some people just see a nice keyboard and want in. They share your enthusiasm, just for different reasons.

Definitely not final but I'm pretty happy with the changes. 17.6mm front face, top mount, swapped from M2 to M2.5 (for both top/bottom and top mounting). Numpad layout compat will be added, so don't worry about that.

Definitely not final but I'm pretty happy with the changes. 17.6mm front face, top mount, swapped from M2 to M2.5 (for both top/bottom and top mounting). Numpad layout compat will be added, so don't worry about that.

so it looks like you've increased the depth of the top piece and reduced the depth of the bottom piece asymmetrically? i'm a fan of the changes.

on another more serious note, is this dead?

edited to add: do you happen to know the slant angles for your first proto and this change?

Read the OP, didn't read the rest of the thread - thanks for the tip mate! I remain really keen on this, it's beautiful.

Yeah come on, reading the OP results in lower post count we can't have that can we?

First of all, I'd like to thank whoever didn't forget about this IC, I certainly haven't and that's why it's coming back.

Since it's been almost 6 months since I posted this IC, I figure I should give some kind of update. If you're an active member of various Discord servers there's a chance you've seen my TKL design, Seulgi, bouncing around. I ran a very small quantity of these (not in GB format, I paid for production and only accepted payment once I received the items in-hand) and I think it went very well.

Now that I have a better grasp of what will be required of me with something like this, I'll lay out some good news and some semi-bad news for Yves' future:

GOOD

SEMI-BAD

In some other miscellaneous details, I've decided to ditch the Voyager PCB and commission a PCB from a well-known, reputable designer who will remain nameless for the time being.

I hope I don't disappoint too many of you, but this model gave me great results and makes realizing these designs possible, so I hope you understand.

As I do not plan on running this on Geekhack, I'm gonna go ahead and plug my Discord server here: https://discord.zekk.works -- all updates, info, progress, communication once the buy starts, and miscellaneous discussion is gonna happen there. I'm always available via this server or in general on Discord (zekkin#0001) if you want to chat about any of this.

Thanks again for your support.
