What podcasts do you listen to?
« on: Tue, 15 May 2018, 20:43:56 »
Taking a leaf out of Ray's book, I thought I'd start a thread about what podcasts people listen to.

I haven't got much love for my local radio stations, and due to not being exposed to much new or good music, I've turned to podcasts on my 30 minute commute to/from work.

Due to my interest in American sports, pretty much all of the ones I subscribe to are sports related. I started with the Dirty Sports podcast but one of the guys really started to piss me off so I've stopped listening to them. Next I moved to Pardon My Take from Barstool Sports, then I started to dabble in the I Am Rappoport Podcast. Most recently I'm listening to the Rich Eisen Podcast as I'm a huge fan of his.

Sometimes I like listening to the JRE as well but I prefer watching the YouTube version.

I'm mostly into cars, American Sports and a bit of easy listening science so if you guys have any good shows to listen to, I'm all ears!
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Is the description "short stories designed specifically for the curious mind plagued with a short attention span" fairly accurate? How long are the shows typically?

Yes that's it.

Most are around 8-10 minutes but there will occasionally be a longer one.

I usually listen to a couple or three at a time.

I like the ones in the RelayFM network. As a software developer, I’m pretty much into tech and general programming topics. From that category I listen to: “Accidental Tech Podcast”, “Upgrade”, “Under the Radar” and “App Stories”.

I am also very into Mac/iOS “power user” stuff, so I also listen to the appropriately named “Mac Power Users” podcast.

DL Gaming podcast is probably my favorite. They are a pc game podcast but are really fun to listen too. They also stream all the episodes live on twitch and have an awesome discord server. The community is pretty cool and I recommend everyone check them out

Only podcast(s) I ever listened to religiously were SleepyCabin and Norm McDonald Live. Both of which are in some half-dead Schrodinger's cat state of being right now.

Sometimes Bill Burr, H3, and Joe Rogan too. And Psychicpebble's podcast when he was doing that.

Joe Rogan and Hardcore History.

- In regards to hardcore history - If anybody is even remotely interested in history and enjoys very good story telling I highly recommend checking out some of his stuff on YouTube. He is very thorough in his explanations of historical events/lead ups to historical events/cultures and is also extremely easy to understand. It's basically the History teachers I wished I had had prior.

+1 for Joe Rogan. Episode #1109 seems interesting, as that author's book, "why we sleep", seems to be one of the most recommended books for 2018 on hacker news.

This is a good space to express how unfunny and annoying Bobby Lee is. He never has anything interesting or funny to say and completely relies on his guests to generate good conversation, and sometimes can't even do that right.

His podcast was amusing.....at first. But the more you watch it the more you realize that what you're saying is exactly right.

I work a job where I listen to podcasts and music all day. I really am enjoying the "You Make it Weird" podcast hosted by Pete Holmes. He interviews comedians and celebrities and does a deep dive into their beliefs, relationships and direction in life. It is refreshing to just watch a 2 hour conversation rather than a pointed interview. I really like the podcast. Outside of that the H3H3 podcast is pretty great as well.

I really enjoy JRE as well. I know he can get a lot of hate, but I think that comes from people who generally misunderstand him/his message.

Sure, he can be a little pedantic when it comes to certain topics, but I'm not sure what you could expect from a 1000+ episode show. They're going to retread some areas.

I'm also a big fan of podcasts where they dissect movies/TV. James Bonding and No F**king Ziti are great if you like James Bond and The Sopranos, respectively.

99% Invisible is great for people who live to obsess over the seemingly mundane. "The unnoticed design that shapes our world"

Fatman Beyond (formally Fatman on Batman) is great if you are into comics/pop culture. Kevin Smith can ramble sometimes but I feel Marc does a great job at reeling him in. Whereas most of his other shows the guest/co-host generally just lets Kevin talk (not technically a bad thing, just nice to have a change up) Marc really shares his opinions and really feels like a co-host. I miss the old days with the Batman commentaries and things like that, but really dig the direction the show has taken. Also really enjoy Marc's ability to make bad/ok media really REALLY awesome.

If you're a fan of JRE, you may want to check out The Fighter and the Kid. Took me a while to warm up to this one but MAN is it funny. A particular highlight is the later shows (past 2 years or so) with Chris D'elia. The intricacy in which they rip on each other is great. Chris really takes it to another level. They actually uploaded a "best of" from Chris last year if you want to see the best bits. Particular favorites of mine are: the racist coffee shop inside Chris' house as well as the "Simply Strawberry". Both are hilarious on a totally different level and will get you hooked.

All I can think of at the moment. Since were on the topic- if anyone knows of any good programing/CS podcasts that help with the learning of certain topics (think - Hardcore History or Revolutions, but for computer science) I would really love recommendations. I've been searching for something along those lines but haven't had much luck. Most of the stuff I find is releated to discussion which is great, but can be boring if you have no idea what they are talking about.

Probably inspired me indirectly to hop into custom keebs in fact. Adam's whole philosophy is what gave me the confidence to start down the road of building/making. Really thankful for that.

Also... Crob!!! Never thought in a million years I'd find someone else (especially here) into The Nine Club. I don't skate as much anymore so I kind of fade in and out and only listen when someone is on who I remember from my days but I listen to the new bucks as well. Nakel's episode was really great. I've been really into podcasts recently.  Typically I'll binge on something new for a few months, then discover something else to binge on for some time.  After I've cooled down from the binge, I'll come back to a show in more reasonable doses.  I have an obsession with catching up on shows, hence the binge.  :-[

Favorites:
- My Brother, My Brother and Me (comedy advice show - many thank to fendent and booper for dragging me to a show and changing my life :)) )
- Wonderful! (one of the above brothers and his wife talking about things they like)
- The Adventure Zone (D&D by the same brothers)
- Hello Internet (CGPGrey and Brady Haran of Numperphile, Periodic Videos, etc talking about various topics)
- Reply All (investigative podcast that loosely ties in with internet culture or technology)
- Retronauts (retro video games)
- Digging Deep with Robert Plant (Robert Plant digs deep)
- Behind the Bastards (probably the most serious of everything I listen to - pretty eye opening looks at bastards of history)
- Stuff You Should Know (shorter podcast about interesting topics / tidbits you didn't know)
- 99% Invisible (design - I feel like everyone knows this one)
