Modding switch tops for removal with LEDs installed
« on: Wed, 05 November 2014, 23:02:52 »
I know there are sip sockets to allow removing LED's without an iron but has anyone actually done the mod to their switch tops that allow removing the top without even removing the LED from the switch?

Just wondering how it works in actuality.  I understand how to do the mod but for the wifes GH36 I know she wants LED's installed but I want to be able to remove the tops without removing the LED's as all.

You are supposed to drill a hole in the top of the led opening. Normally, the switch top is sandwiched between the led and the PCB disallowing disassembly. However, by drilling a hole larger than the led, can take off the top.

you can also seat the LED in there a little lower to help keycap clearance.

Correct, this was my understanding but has anyone done it and can provide first hand knowledge of success??

WFD made a video about this. I can't provide it now as I am on my phone and that would be painful

try nail clippers (the curvature is just nice) or a nice pair of flush cutters.

Yeah, now that you mention that, I will probably use the Larsen flush cutters I got from Mkawa.
