Title: [IC] Universal OS Key Symbol // Poll is live!
Post by: FrostyToast on Mon, 12 January 2015, 20:34:23
POLL IS UP!

Not too long ago, I started an interest check for my colorway called, "RetroBlight", and somewhere along the lines a suggestion was brought up by Elrick and jdcarpe.
So the idea is that we should have a universal logo that would be put in place on every OS key for every keyset.
It could be something related to GeekHack that defines our community, or something really plain and simple like a star.

Here is the conversation:
More
A tiny gripe, but I'd like super/meta keys since I don't use Windows.

Great set!

Frosty, what about just investing in a single ICON to symbolize the Windows, Various OS's and such?

That way, we all know that in that area we aren't morons wanting to see Windows Logo sitting there reminding us constantly that we are using a Windows setup.  Time to finally grow up and mature because we need a UNIVERSAL Logo that sits in that position and lets any user know that it's OS related only.

Sick of paying for extra Windows, Linux and Mac Logo Keys constantly in nearly every Group Buy held here on GH.  Time to finally release an all encompassing ICON that can be applied for every known OS that was ever made or will be made, plus for the poverty stricken give them a cheaper option.  Remember Henry Ford's famous quote back when you can have any colour you want for your brand new car, as long as it was BLACK (something to think about here).
I really like the idea of having a universal logo. However, I have no idea what kind of image could represent this set as it didn't really come from anything special.

Doesn't have to be specific to RetroBlight. It could be used by any and every GB going forward. Something really universal.

So what would you guys like to see replace the OS key for all of our sets?

Here is a list of symbols that could be viable which will be updated periodically.

Perhaps. Although a whole bunch of people don't associate with Cherry, just about all of the sets this would be used on, if not all, would be Cherry boards.

Just kidding.  I'll have to think more.  I do have to say that I hate the star, it reminds me of the horribly tacky star tattoos from the 90s.

I do like the cherry logo that was mentioned.

How about a window. Like four panes. You could even make it a little stylized like this:

The one issue with the Cherry logo is that you will need 2 colours on one base colour. This means we have to dye-sub unless we can somehow find someone to do triple-shot.
EDIT: Dye subbing will also majorly restrict colour choices.

What about the glider symbol? It would be OS independent, as well as forum independent (for GBs wanting to include DT or other forums).

I'm sure if we wanted the grid lines, we could play with the thickness a little.

I threw it together in paint really quickly, but I'm sure someone could make a better version pretty quickly. I figure a monitor with a command line and keyboard is pretty platform neutral and would fit nicely for the gui key. Plus it shouldn't too hard to have printed or molded if the lines are thick enough. And I'd imagine it could also be stylized slightly differently for keysets.

I hate to throw a fly in the ointment, but I thought one of the cool aspects of the various keysets was the creative things people did with the OS Key. Each set tended to replace the OS specific key with a symbolic keycap that related to the set. Why do we want to replace this with a single common symbol which has a very small chance of pleasing everyone?

I don't feel like having a universal symbol available prevents people from still doing that. It just seems like it would be a nice option for sets that don't really have a theme that can be illustrated in a symbol. In those cases a platform neutral symbol can be a way to please the people who want to have a graphical key there instead of just "win", "super", or "meta" without forcing an os logo on them.

IMO, "command" is too Mac-centric, "super" is too UNIX-centric, and "win" is off course too Windows-centric.

The two I like best so far are the Glider (heh) and diamond. However, the diamond Meta key used to be a part of every Tsangan set (along with the star), and no one seemed to like it much.

I thought of doing something with "OS" but that only works in English (and maybe a few Germanic languages), so it's not truly universal.

Something resembling the power symbol might be a cool idea.

I thought of doing something with "OS" but that only works in English (and maybe a few Germanic languages), so it's not truly universal.

Something resembling the power symbol might be a cool idea.

The glider is something that is very simple and anyone a part of hacker culture can associate with.
I had no idea what you were referring to. I had to look it up. I learned to code on a Commodore 64 back in 1989, been active on BBS:es in the early '90s, used Internet first through a bridge from FidoNet, demo scene, LAN parties, open source... and have never seen that symbol before.

I did one earlier that was in a "window" of sorts.  Nobody commented on it.  It needs to be in a box or something in order for it to be an icon and not merely 2 symbols found elsewhere on the keyboard.

I can do a clean version in Illustrator tonight when I get home if somebody doesn't beat me to it.

Yeah, kind of.  I was going to take it even a step further -- basically just a command symbol in a box.  Corners have to be radiused for SP -- they have a technical document on their site explaining all the (many) requirements for new legends.

Maybe there's a way we can get both GH and DT (the actual letters) into the symbol?

Once a decision has been made, I will definitely start a group buy based on the design which will include the key in every popular colorway.
No idea if I would do individual keys to increase adoption, or an extravaganza pack to make it concise.
I would just have to get permission from the creators of each set.

I'll probably divide into packs like the extravaganza.
So maybe I will have 3 colorways with all of their respective keys in one pack which makes for 18 keys per pack.
Every profile? No. Just the ones which the sets were made in.

I imagine there would be about a dozen different sets out there that I could include.
If there were 3 colorways in a pack, then that would mean there would be 4 packs in total.
It's not the most insane thing in the world when you divide it like that.

Is there any reason why we cant combine a couple of ideas?

Well the problem with combining ideas is that it eventually gets overwhelmingly busy.
Remember, this would have to fit on a 1x1 cap and with too much detail, it could get weird.
Also, the more detail you add, the less and less it works with certain sets.

Or terminal keys, for that matter. Are we designing a key to open a terminal window?

:D

OK, I get what you're saying, but how else do you capture the essence of "OS" and what that key specifically does in a symbol?

If it was easy one of the OEMs (probably Cherry) would have done it already.

I'm curious about a 'S' inscribed inside of an 'O'

Exactly.
All we're looking for is a symbol that we can associate with.

Okay Frosty ole chum, are we going to vote for the forth coming icon or what?

I'll set up a poll once I get home. Or maybe I'll bother Hoff.

Btw prompt design showed it limitations, you now have the choice in between unix prompt (as popularized by NS and the OSX Terminal icon) vs DOS/Windows prompt... meh

I'm with you on this one, mecano. You want to hit Cmd-C on your Mac to copy something, and you have to press [terminal icon]-C?? Strange...

Polls are fine and all, but design by committee never works. Steve Jobs knew that you don't ask people what they want, you give them what they need and weren't aware they needed.

I just make a public apology as I have really messed up.
Since suggestions for symbols are still flooding in, I must have the poll closed to allow for more submissions. I acted much too rashly and impulsively had a poll added.
If you want to submit a design, you must do it within 1 week. That is, the deadline for submissions is on he 22nd of this month. Precisely at 17:00EST. I will only take submissions after that if I am feeling extremely generous.
Again, I apologize for my mistake.

Gear is very cool, but it implies control panel/options/settings over "Start", "menu", or some OS-level command... at least for me.  If you look at GUI design, options menus have the gear symbol on lock.

I just like the gear in general, so we could steal it.  :P

Don't have time for this now but what if
you add a S onto the gear making the whole look like half a section sign put pegs on the visible bottom leg of the S.
You'll now have a slightly modified gear (so no more confusion with prefs, code, and so on) + letter o on top of the letter s + letter g like in 'geekhack'..

Some general rules or guidance may provide a base for consensus? Or is this just a general brain storming? Also, are the proposals constrained to certain symbols, or letters some how? Are you going to dismiss those ideas with low votes count in the previous poll?

There will be a new revamped poll in a week that will decide what will be in my upcoming set. I also have decided on a couple of caps that I will likely push regardless of votes.
That doesn't mean that the deadline for submissions will be the be all and end all to this. I welcome everyone to continue the discussion and brainstorm further if they so desire

TL;DR this is going to mostly be about me looking at what I like, however I will pick out one design that you guys vote for.

Yep, there are 14 options and you get to vote 13 times (because if you pick them all it doesn't help decide which to choose :P ).  So if you really hate one design, just vote for everything else.  ;)

And we can look at the numbers (and who voted for what) after the fact, and if there are more people who voted for either gear than anything else, Frosty can consider that option.   :thumb:

I'll end it tomorrow since this is already pretty much dead.
Tomorrow is also exactly two weeks from when this poll began.

Good on you Frosty, I think this has been buttered up enough.

Now lets see what came through as the MOST popular because anything other than that despicable "Windows" Logo will definitely be a genuine improvement  :thumb: .

Unless we see a massive burst of voters, it looks like smiley prompt.

you mean terminal?

half of the pics in the OP are not loading, btw

....
I'm going to assume that you are aware that there is a lot of crossing between votes on both gears.
Also, I know that you don't want the gears anyway ;)

Unbelievable this area was like a ghost town, now every geekhead is running up bogus scores to get their choice through.  DAMN this place still rocks, by hook or crook the evil here shall prevail (as always)  ;) .

It's okay, Elrick. Bunny and I don't give a whit what polls say. :)

Give the people what they didn't know they needed, not what they think they want.

Always knew you guys were true, independent people, here on GH Central  :thumb: .

So far every key-set that has come out of CTRL/ALT thus far has been brilliant and unique, looking forward to your final pick here.

I can add up unique votes for gears to pursue that option if we want.   :thumb:

Also, the comments that people left are only visible to me (I think), so I will forward those along to FrostyToast.

Poll has been closed!

After further review, the gears (13 and 19 votes individually) have 24 total votes from unique members.

Terminal is the "clear" (by one vote) winner, with 25 votes.  :)  Along with Velocicaptor.  ;)

Hooray! Now time to get off my ass and get around to doing something with this.
Also, Hoff, I would still like to see what people put in their comments.

My suggestion would be a simplified version of the switch the keycaps were made for. A plus in a rectangle for Cherry MX, and a circle with tabs for Topre. Could even color the MXs as an indication of what the board has (easy identification from one picture on, say, a forum of some kind). This eliminates any sense of exclusion or elitism. Because no matter what sites you go to or what you use the board for, we are all captivated by the mechanics.

I like the infinity symbol, but deriving from that, what about a circle with two dots centered on along the horizontal? Kinda like dubsgalore's old avatar, if anyone remembers that. I don't know what that was from, sadly.
