Title: Modifying keycaps- J F bumps
Post by: jcoffin1981 on Tue, 01 June 2021, 23:18:43
I am searching for a set of new keycaps as I find very few stock ones satisfactory.  I am looking for preferably cherry profile, but will entertain DSA or XDA.  I have found more than half a dozen sets that I am set to pull the trigger on, but none of them homing bumps on the F or J keys.  This is a deal breaker for me.  However, if that is the case then I don't buy anything.  Has anyone had any success modifying their keycaps, maybe a technique involving a little glue?  I'm not really trying to permanently drill or mod.  Not sure why this is the trend now.  Is this common with non-OEM sets?

What sets are you looking at?  The last few I've purchased had homing caps.

I have this for adding bumps to blank caps. It's out of stock, so more an indicator of what to look for than a "buy this now" recommendation.

It stays in place well, but can be removed cleanly. Far less faff than the only other options I can think of (hot glue or Surgru.)

The very last one from Novelkeys has the bumps- I may get this one

I'm gonna stick with the Cherry profile caps.  Does anyone have any input/feedback as to which is a better choice- Novelkeys vs ePBT vs other?  There are just so few keycap reviews out there.  I like a thick keycap and rough texture. To me this is more important than aesthetics.

Novelkeys are fairly decent PBT (their manufacturer in China is known for good value stuff)

Would recommend you get the ePBT stuff off Taobao but I think these are before they started making the revisions to their molds that balanced out the warp issues, and it is kbdfans so it's being sold at a large markup... but eh. I think I'd stick with the Novelkeys set if you don't mind the colors

Novelkeys ended up selling out.  I purchased ePBT Gray Japanese Cherry Profile for $99-  with the homing bumps. :thumb:
