How do you turn on Num Lock on a SSK?

Shift-ScrLk

Maybe it's Alt + Scroll Lock? That's Dorkvader's suggestion at least.

I tried Alt, Ctrl, and Shift. I tried Caps+Num. I tried Esc+Num. Nothing. I'll take the keyboard home and try it on another computer. Everything else works perfectly except for that. I thought turning on Num with another keyboard would work, but it didn't.

I was guessing from memory. My brief search on it suggests that it should be right shift + scroll lock

Are you quite sure it's an SSK controller PCB?

Pretty sure that's what I did on my SSK, I used a different keyboard to toggle num lock. But my memory might be a little fuzzy.

Let me know if it works for you, otherwise I'll keep hunting for an answer.

I'm not sure at all. I purchased a "SSK", so I should hope so...

There is a chance it's a "normal" model M controller. I'm not too familiar with the visual differences, but If you can open up the KB and post a picture of yours, I'm happy to compare to the SSK controller I'm currently working on. I'll post a picture of it as well, provided the owner gives their permission.

If you're referring to my SSK dorkvader, I don't mind you taking pictures. If it was a Model M controller, how would you enable num lock? Obviously the SSK doesn't have the switch to press like a Model M but maybe there's a layered command (ALT + M for example) that would enable it? I know moose tried a ton of other combos before.

I just received two Aron 106 Alps keyboards from China, but the two keys on either side of the spacebar are printed in Korean.

Does anybody know what these two keys do or can anybody who can read Korean tell me what they say?

Considering the extremely cheap price, they feel surprisingly good to type on and are quite solid feeling (especially the non-tactile one, which is silky smooth).

1) Information is in the original/first post and in the CAD resources thread in Making Stuff Together.
2) Information is in the original/first post and in the CAD resources thread in Making Stuff Together.
3) I'm actually not sure about this. Forget the KMAC screw size but the LZ-GH used M3 6MM screws. Those were too small for use in my KMAC>
4) You could make a standoff like melvang did, buy a small housing for it and attach it to the cable, or hide it inside your case. You can check the teensy/adapter thread Soarer has for ideas. It's a stickied thread in Making Stuff Together.

I'm ordering an aluminum case in black.  How would I go about re-anodizing it in the future if I want it in titanium or silver?  And just wondering what about gold plating?

You'd have to find a shop to do anodization. Most likely have to do the same thing for gold plating.

Edit: There are home kits for anodization but they're expensive and deal with very nasty chemicals. Apparently the gold plating isn't as hard but I'm not as well versed on that.

Could a SDL cable make the difference between Num Lock working and not? The person who sold me the SSK said that the Num Lock worked, and I'm leaning towards believing him. But I took it home yesterday and plugged it into another computer, and nothing...

The one I bought was brand new. But I'm wondering if maybe the cable from an SSK is necessary for it to work as an SSK? Maybe the cable I bought is for a regular Model M?

But then, people have purchased Orihalcon's cable for both, and they don't differentiate between SSK or regular M...

Ah, I meant maybe you should try another cable. I know for a fact I used the same cable for my SSK as I did a Model AT F and M.

I'm going to try to remember today to run it through my PS/2 to USB converter, and see if there is any difference, then I might pick up a cable from Orihalcon and see what's up there.

I know I've seen it posted and am pretty sure of the answer but I'll ask anyways.

I've got a coolermaster board and it has costar stabs and I hate those little white inserts so is my only solution to completely desolder and install cherry stabs?

Or can a stock coolermaster plate even take cherry stabs?

It can't accept Cherry stabs. You'd have to find a Universal TKL plate if you wanted to use them.

I'd like to know a few keyboards, TKL or Fullsize ( TKL would be better ) that have a larger Ctrl key size, I believe that means 1.5x modifiers, like the BWU, could someone point some to me?

The Korean custom boards like The Cheat, KMAC, and LZ-GH will have these as well.

Many WYSE boards also have large Ctrl keys, but you would most likely have to make a converter for use with a PC.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thank you everyone who replied, I think my best bet is to build a Phantom, although it will be a bit hard to get the plate and switches, besides the fact that it will be my second keyboard, after my BWU. But I believe it would be worth it.

What kind of switches are you wanting?

There are cheap new blue switches in the classifieds right now. There are also frequent sales of cheap used black switches.

You can also order switches from a groupbuy at deskthority from user 7bit.

What kind of wire should I use for direct wiring?

I always use telecom cross connect wire, because I have a 1000' spool of it. It's basically just 24AWG solid copper wire.
Cheers! Got some 24AWG now, it's perfect.

Yes, chop off the two smaller plastic pins on the bottom of the switches with some nail clippers or a similar tool.

Do I have to solder for this transfer, or can ijust switch the inner components?

PCB mount can be opened up and you can remove the stem and spring however unless the plate has been designed to allow for switch top removal you will have to desolder the plate mount

You can open the switches on a PCB-mounted board without desoldering, but on a plate mounted board (unless it uses a custom plate, which i'm guessing yours does not) you cannot, so you need to desolder them to access their internals.

Also note that you can not swap switch internals on PCB mount without desoldering if the switch has an LED

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm trying to make sure that a Phantom PCB is compatible with a standard Filco TKL plate (for a Filco-style layout, of course).  If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.
Thanks in advance!
