My G81-7000HUBUS-2/03 MultiBoard
« on: Mon, 12 January 2009, 22:36:48 »
I just got this thing back from my friend and wow is it crap. It feels like typing on wet newspaper. But there is a silver lining to it ...

This thing has a scooped "f" and "j" key instead of having tits to mark the home row. I thought that was cool so I popped off a key. (God this thing is murder; brb ... Back on the MK96 and wow is that better.) I looked at the key and found that it's double injection molded. I have a set of Alps keys that are double injection and they are so much nicer to type on, so I'd like to get these on a better 'board in the near future.

The scooped thing feels nice - is that a Cherry standard? I know the Das II (das Das II?) had them and my Filco did not.

So yeah, the board can be thrown as hard as possible into a brick wall, but I think I'm gonna have to buy a Cherry 'board to use the keys on. I got this thing for something like $15 shipped, so I wasn't too upset and now I see it was worth it.

"Scooped F and J" is the Cherry style for double injection molded caps.
Laser shot caps don't have *tits* but have horizontal bumps which make you feel worser most likely.
BTW, if you peel off black vinyl coating which covers plastic face plate and switch modules from your G81-7000, you will feel a bit better than wet news paper.   half dried wet news paper, maybe?

I'll look into that. Thanks for the facts and the tip.

forgot to mention.
Do it only when you are about to throw it against a brick wall.
Once you removed it, you can't go back ward.  unable to taste real wet-news-paper feel again.

My brand new G80-3000LSCEU had these as well (POM keycaps).

Wow, really?  My G80-3000LSMEU has keycaps scooped equally.   Brand new, still in a box.... bought it 3 years ago though.
other Cherry boards with L suffix also have slightly scooped caps for all keys.

Sandy, would these keys work on a Filco mini with MX blacks? I know some of the keys don't match up, but I'd only use the single-space keys anyway. Do you think the keys would work as good as the OEM Filco keys?

Would you please clarify  what *Filco mini* is?
This one( JP model FKB91JU) or this one ( FKB91JP )  or majestouch 10keyless?
91JU and 91JP are almost same.  key pitches of Filco lines seem bit narrower than Cherry 'boards.
I'll check later. I'm now in my mam's place.

What do you mean with *OEM Filco keys*?  those blank keycaps in Taiwan BBS?

My G80-3000 (sorry, can't remember the other letters) has scooped F and J, and it feels so much nicer to type on than having raised dots.  My only complaint about the keys on this board is the number pad 5 which has a dot, which is raised more than on any keyboard I've used before (the dot, that is).  I think that maybe the dot is smaller diameter and more raised than on most keyboards, where the dot feels "softer" due to being shallower or larger in diameter.

My preference (highest to lowest) for F/J/NUM5 is:
SCOOPED -> HORIZ LINE -> DOT

On the topic of keys though, I love the feel of the keycaps on Cymotion boards.  I don't know how to describe the texture, kind of "silky" is probably best.

Picked up G80-2100HCD.
Pulled out some keycaps in alpha key section and put them onto Filco compact FKB91JP with  mx/brown ( JP and JU are almost same ).  Cherry keycaps can take seats on 91JP
but there is an apparent difference between cherry caps and Filco caps. Hight of caps.
You can change most of alpha keys to Cherry caps but you have to use original Filco caps for outer positions such as tilde to Ctrl on the left,  lower keys including space bar and keys at the right side. keys in alpha section will sink down about 1mm.
For example, I measured "P" and the result was; Cherry/8.1mm while Filco/9.4mm.
If you can accept hight difference of 1mm and something, you can use Cherry caps on Filco compact board.  otherwise you'd better to keep your mini board with stock Filco caps.
In case of Majestouch 10keyless,  you also have to use original caps for some larger keys with stabilizing rods. Stabilizing system of Filco boards is different from that of Cherry boards.
For other OEMs like ABS, same story will be applied because those boards use same Filco style caps and stabilizing system.
