Programming a Satan "GH60"
« on: Mon, 21 March 2016, 09:58:57 »
*Cringe Removed :D*

Now you get to program it.

I initially did this with TMK using Kairyu's toolkit.

First off you need to build out your layouts using the keyboard layout editor
http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/

When you are done, you need to copy the raw data, one layer at a time into the super easy TMK Keymap generator here
http://www.enjoyclick.org/tkg/

You want to make sure you select the right board, that would be the GH60 RevCHN 2nd party.
You can increase your layer count as you need.

Youve got your layers pasted in.

Set our Fn0 to trigger only momentarily, and have fn#s set up to trigger backlighting options

Set up the default backlighting behaviors.

When you have all the data entered and settings selected, just click to download your .eep file.

You need to get the toolkit to setup and program your board now. you can find it at

https://github.com/kairyu/tkg-toolkit

Download that zip folder and extract it all.

Assuming you are using windows, update the drivers for the board controller by using the zadig.exe file and clicking the buttons.

Once that is done your ready to program.
In the windows folder, run the setup file. select the options "2", "N", "1" and press any key.

Finally you drag the Keymap.eep file from earlier and drop it ONTO the reflash.bat file.

That will run it and say it is waiting for bootloader.
When it says this, press the button on the back.
It should program the board while showing you the process on the screen.
Press any key and you are done! You might need to use a second keyboard to press a key at the end of the reflash, because the 60 satan might be unresponsive at first.

Thanks for reading, and let me know if I missed something!

I will be doing something very similar to this with Zealios 78g switches!

Awesome--thanks for this.  I built mine recently too and learned a lot along the way.  I should have also done a few switches first to get everything aligned before putting plate and PCB together--I did it a stupid way and I can see it isn't as aligned as it could be.

I'm going to build another after I get the WS2812B underglow lights working (soldered yesterday, now to flash QMK).  I'm basically copying http://imgur.com/a/BzSMq.  After the second is built I'll take apart the first one to try my hand at disassembly.

Trying to get used to the whole thing before my Ergodox and Neutrino kits come in--don't want to use those as my learning platforms.  And want to get desoldering and switch modification practice in before I take apart my KUL to do an ergo clear mod.

Nice build. I've done a very similar one (plate and case are just different colors)  :thumb:

I don't think so.  I think yours is probably better put together.  Mine was my first try, and if you look at the solder joints and lineup between the PCB and the plate I would say there's a lot of room for improvement.

My plan is to build another one with some gateron blacks--it's really true that once you build one you want to keep building more.  I'll use what I learned on this one to make the next one a lot better.  Then I'll take this one apart as my learning process of pulling apart a keyboard.

It could have to do with your soldering? Do you want to post pictures?

Its strange that all these keys are in a column.

Yes, they're in a column.
the seller told me to test first using a tweezer and EK software if the buttons correctly function
but that error occured.

Using this site, and connecting the ports on those switches with metal tweezers or a paper clip shows no activity?

use it and test every single switch.

Sounds to me like a diode in that column isn't working. You might want to reflow the diodes one at a time, testing after each one.

this was my thought at first, but i'm afraid i cant return this board to the seller if i do it.
but i'll try to replace the diode tonight if i cant return this to the seller.

How did you program it? maybe its a software issue?

Yes, but after I saw that it did not work in an attempt to try to fix it. I used EasyKeyMap* to make the layout then programmed with flip. Didn't fix it, though

Thanks for your help, I hope I can get it fixed as the switches would be a real ***** to unsolder

Have you tried a different cable?
and tried both zadig and flip drivers and still get the same output?

you didn't set a function key to access your other layer, and you didn't give the second layer any scan codes on a lot of the keys.

do you have a split right shift, or long shift?

Long shift? I think so. just like a standard keyboard. I've tried different cables and I've also used many different drivers. This happened before I flashed any firmware onto it or installed any drivers, though.

this sucks man, I'm sorry its not working right.

I attached the hex based on a modified version of your layout just squeezing in the fn key to caps lock so you can try the other layer, and moved caps lock to C on layer 1
and adding the missing scan codes.

Try it if you want. doesn't sound like anything will change, but its worth a shot I guess.

Stupid quesetion. But I can't for the life of me find an option or drop down list that lets me pick what key is? Or do I have to type in each keys legend individually, which will appear in its raw data? How would I know if I typed in the right thing??

I suggest you click preset in the top of the page and start with the default 60% and just plug in from there. IDK of any drop down menu.  I typed in each individually and it appears in the raw data.

You would know if it worked when you flash! haha
its easy enough to change the map on the fly, so don't stress, try your best and change as needed.

I should say that easy AVR supports this board now and has a built in programmer, with a key picker option. Its a bit better, but i found this option to be easy enough in itself.

So easyAVR should work for programming the keys and the LEDs? I looked through the thread yesterday and it looked like it the author was working on support for the GH60 Satan but I wasn't sure if there was a stable version out for it yet. I'm still doing a lot of research but I'm considering using easyAVR since I'm very new to building and programming keyboards

I've been playing around with AVR, it is easier to assign which keys I want, instead of having to type in each one. I was just playing around with your instructions, haven't actually got my Satan board yet.

Yeah they are both great tools, but AVR is moving quick.

I since made a few custom layouts on my handwired boards with that software. its great.

I think some of the hold ups have to do with programming a RGB led strip.

I have successfully programmed my board with easy avr over a month ago.

I prefer the TMK tool because they have different LED settings, and I feel the TMK option gives you more choices.

It really is easy to use.  but both work.

Do you happen to know the differences between the LED settings?

If my memory serves, I believe the TMK tool version has 5 brightness options where the AVR had 3, as well as going physically brighter than Easy AVR
the last time I used Easy AVR.

They both have flashing options that have varying speeds, and the Easy AVR has the faster of the two.

There is one setting in the Toolkit where it starts as the lowest brightness and typing increases the brightness, and another where it starts at the highest brightness and typing fades out.  I believe the AVR version only had one of the two options.

That's interesting. I'm sure when I finally get the Satan I'll end up messing around with both. Thanks for the info though. Did you happen to add the RGB strip to yours? Im looking around and it actually looks pretty nice on a few of the boards

I never have, I have a strip to eventually use but I need a clear case.   For now those who do are using qmk

I'm trying out QMK for the Docker thingy, but I can't get it to work right. Have any of you QMK-users changed anything to make it work? I had to change quite a few things in TMK, but I can't keep the tweaks the same since the layout isn't the same.
