Computer Wallpapers / Backgrounds
« on: Mon, 13 April 2009, 06:17:06 »
Can any of you recommend some good sites to gather a few computer backgrounds?

Most of the wallpapers that I run across are far too busy and overly distracting for my own tastes, so I'm most interested in backgrounds such as simple gradients, or those that are more minimalistic, and simplistic in nature.

I've already pretty much googled my googlers off, so I'm familiar with most of the well known wallpaper sites and what they offer, but I'm hoping that some of you can recommend a few of the more obscure sites that have some nice but simple backgrounds.

Thank you for any recommendations.

Deviantart.com is one of my favorites.  At work, I just a dark grey background.  I hate it when people look at my desktop and ask what kind of random, abstract art I am looking at.

I always go to 4chan's HR site.. http://orz.4chan.org/hr/imgboard.html

Or, the better one would be http://www.interfacelift.com/wallpaper
A very good collection there in various resolutions.

lol... don't feel too badly over it, because I often use a plain gray background as well.

It does get rather irritating after looking at literally thousands of images but finding nothing you like because they are all so "graphically busy".  Guess I just need quit being so lazy and open up GIMP and create my own.

ummm . . . mebbe'  you  are  wanting  a  geekhack  wallpaper ?  should  be  relatively  easy . . . just  wantin'  gradient  background.  i  would  think  the  harbinger  of  geekhack  forums  has  the  original  specs (colors, fonts, etc.) of  the  logo . . . whether  or  not  it  was  created  usin'  vectors  is  another  matter.

as  for  me . . . i  seen  some  nice  ones  at  digital  blasphemy . . . think  some  of  'em  are  even  quad-displays (not sure).  the  one  i  currently  have  on  my  desktop  is  called  "crucibleplanet" .

I haven't seen her since Spiderman 3 and then, her maw looked like a bear trap. Hope she spent some of that money in fixing it!

Also no offense to your personal preference, at least she doesn't have Tara Reids body ~_~

I've never been a big Kirsten Dunst fan.  Juliana Margulies was (and still is in a cougarish sort of way) pretty hot back in the day.  Debra Messing is a real hottie, too.

Agreed, and she has the ability to look very different from one scene to the next.  It's almost like she never looks the same twice.  She's quite talented when it comes to here acting skills, as well.  I personally think she's highly underrated.

I didn't make it; that was bhtooefr's design.  He did a fantastic job with it.

I'm not particulaly bothered about busyness, but there does seem to be rather a lack of variety in backgrounds (and similar things, like laptop skins).

I used the big version of my Avatar as a background for a while (it's a submersible aircraft carrier from Supreme Commander) and right now I'm using some concept art for a game called East India Company consisting of very wide aspect picture of an elephant and mahout looking out over a city. I'd love to know of a source with a good variety too - even things as simple as pictures of popular landmarks tend to be missing (Hadrian's wall, Milau viaduct, Hagia Sophia, Mausoleum of Theodoric, Snofru's Bent Pyramid and the Basilica at Trier would all make excellent wallpapers)

A really high-res scan (like 800dpi) of an obsolete banknote , cropped arbitrarily, can make a pretty nice wallpaper, just because of the intricate engraving patterns.
