4k Disc Player
« on: Mon, 06 May 2019, 06:49:18 »
Anyone got any recommendations for a 4k disc player?

I recently got a cheap 4k tv and my interwebs are too slow to stream 4k so I bought some 4k discs but don't have a player yet.

I'm open to options but the TV was only $250 (insignia firetv edition 55") and my sound system is a 5.1 vizio soundbar SB4051-C0 (wireless surrounds and a sub) setup from a few years ago.

Last I saw the Xbox One was the cheapest option for disc playback. Otherwise if you were willing you could rip them to PC using a UHD 'friendly' drive and play them back via some USB/memory card supporting device on the TV, which I've read some do.

Specific to 4k Bluray players. If you're outputting to a 4K  TV,   they're all more/less going to look the same if you're after Minimal image processing.

On a 4K bluray,

The pixel Luma Brightness information is 4K, the Chroma (Color) information is 1080p.

So if nothing fancy is the goal,  the only thing the player has to do is translate the Luma 1:1, and Upscale the Chroma to 4K, and SEND.

The more expensive players will have slightly better Chroma processing, but overall, even the Most-expensive chroma processing vs the Computationally-Cheapest , the difference is mostly invisible during a moving shot.

So with respect to 4K, even a budget player would do an arguably good job, 4K to 4K.

There are ofcourse more Exciter features,  which reprocesses the image for a -different look-, similar to Audio EQ.  There's no way this type of processing would look good on a budget player, because they wouldn't have the processing power to do it well.

So if you're a purist, expensive players do no more than budget players.   If you're a muscle car / ricer kind of person, an expensive player has the bigger wheels.

The other half of the equation is if you intend to put Traditional 1080p Blurays in there, and have it go from 1080p to 4K..

An Xpensive player HERE, could greatly outperform a budget player.

If you haz access to Arrrgh Matey,    Then Today's landscape is such that, HTPC still offers the absolute BEST image quality output.

1080p content output to 4K PC requires ~1050/ ti

2160p content output to 4K PC requires ~1060/ 1070

Then finally there's Colorimeters, which cost nearly as much as your new tv, so while I'd say it's worth it. it's tough to impart the Awesomeness, unless you're already inclined in this area. For example, if you've ever taken screenshots from different sources of video and compared to see which one's better.  If you've stared at 1 corner of the TV for an extended 30 minutes and concluded that the bottom right corner looks better.  (You know, insane people).

This is what I was reading about earlier and my reason for posting this thread but I have zero other desire to want an xbox.

I was looking at the sony UBP-X700, amazon warehouse has them for around $120.

And yeah we would continue to use dvd, bluray and 4k bluray depending on the movie.

We do stream (netflix, hulu, amazon, etc.)  but the tv handles all the needs there, just don't have the speed to stream 4k content.

Thankfully they would rather play outside or play board games/card games.

And they have no exposure to gaming beyond 8bit nintendo, the occasional pc casual game and a couple android titles.

Sony generally favors _image accuracy_  over Excite..

So, if anything you can trust they're not Borking anything up.

The avsforum snapshot is such that, it seems most users are quite enthusiastic about Oppo,  Followed by Sony..

I've got the nolan 4k collection on the way but it's not scheduled to be here until the 16th.

I think I'll take a chance on a warehouse unit x700 and go from there.

It's a good start.. The HDR to SDR feature is suppose to be real gud'

That may produce a better image on your new insignia, because the player has better tonemapping capability than the tv itself.

To clarify, all tvs are doing tonemapping into something LESS than the full HDR space.

It says HDR to SDR,  but actually, it's still HDR.. because HDR is the HDR signal (limited by the TV's capacity).

I recommend the Sony UBP-X700. It's reasonably priced, does a pretty good job at everything it's supposed to do, and it's one of the few BD players that support Dolby Vision.

Dolby Vision may not matter much to you right now, but you may as well do some future proofing, especially since it's so reasonably priced.

Watching inception,  video looks great but audio is slightly out of sync. I can't find my soundbar remote to adjust it.

Maybe I need better cables??

Hrrm.. well it doesn't sound like  a cable issue.

Try updating the tv first.  then try updating the x700.

If that doesn't help.  x700 or sound bar might have sound delay adjustments.

Yeah the delay adjustments on the tv and player add delay,  I need take away delay.

It's weird, some parts are worse than others.

Usually the audio is faster than the video since audio processing is a lot simpler than video processing. I think you'll have to find your soundbar remote to get this fixed.

If it makes you feel any better it's not that unusual.

Another thing you should know about the Sony BD player is that you'll need to manually turn Dolby Vision on and off in the settings. It's a pain, but for the price it's hard to complain...

Also, try using the X700's HDR to SDR conversion.

It is ~probably~ better than the tonemapping of the TV itself.

It's called *Hdr to Sdr*,   but the end result is Still HDR, that's just the name of the tonemapping feature.

After activating this mode on the Bd player, make sure to turn off all the dynamic features on the TV itself, and let the bluray player handle everything.
