Long time lurker, first time poster.

Like many of you I used to scrape by on membrane keyboards, constantly replacing them as they repeatedly failed. I thought the Logitech G11 keyboard was finally the perfect keyboard I had been looking for until it proved unable to stand up to a bit of abuse and I had 3 break within half a year. I bought a Das keyboard just for the coolness factor of the blanked keys with no knowledge of what Cherry MX key switches were and upon typing out my first test sentence I was hooked. I then careened through KBC Pok3rs, Ducky Shines, Corsairs, Steelseries keyboards trying out Cherry MX blues, blacks, reds, and browns before settling on clears. I thought that would finally do and I was set.

Until I saw a Happy Hacking Keyboard and just had to have one for its minimalism and aesthetic. Anyway to cut a long story short I'm now hooked on Topre typing and have an HHKB at each workstation in my house.

I've got 3 at the moment, all kind of next to each other. I'll probably end up with a couple more since I'm living in a rented out abandoned mental institution at the moment (while I save to buy an apartment) so I have tons of secure space for very cheap.

They're great! Interesting that my favourite kind of key switch just happens to be the most expensive. I'm wondering whether I should get myself a Realforce keyboard next or an old school IBM Model M SSK for the nostalgia appeal and to try out some buckling springs since I haven't used BS keyboards since I was a kid. I'll use that one to control a little CLI Gentoo server that controls a bunch of headless Raspberry Pis.

I won't be home for quite a while but I took this on my phone before I left of 2 of my HHKBs. There's another CF skull I'll stick on the white one that should be waiting for me to pick up from the post office by the time I get home too:

...pics or you're a liar

The real estate agent person told me it used to be a "kind of nursing home" but it has all the signs of a much more secure institution and trying to find any history on the building leads to dead ends. I have a couple pictures on my Instagram and I'll take more when I'm home including the creepy "LOOK THROUGH WINDOW BEFORE OPENING" sign on one of the security doors plus the panic buttons that are all over the place. This gated off room is under the house and has iron bars over the windows and nobody has the keys for the alleged 'cool room', not that I would ever go in there:

Can I ask how many sq feet you get? Are you renting the whole thing or are there other tenants?

For the longest time, because I've never owned or used a HHKB, I never knew why people put those colored caps on the right alphas. I didn't know until recently that those function as the arrow cluster as well.
Now I think they look awesome like that.

Welcome to Geekhack!

That's quite a range of keyboards (and presumably switches) you've tried.

You've tried the rest, now you've got the best (HHKB, that is).

How did you come up with your username?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

One is all I can justify.  And to think that I originally got it to put on my server as it was a small keyboard that wouldn't take up much space over in the corner :))
