Anyone else love video game music as much as I do? Currently I'm quite taken with the Starcraft 2 Terran themes. They are really fantastic. God of War also had some pretty epic music. Obviously Portal was great :P Any other video games with great music?

Well, I've grown out of the video game age by now, but I still
pop my Descend 2 and Wipeout CDs in from time to time just for
playing their CDDA tracks.

Also, Machinae Supremacy might be of interest here.  They play
some kind of rock with support from a C64 soundchip.  Their
earlier work is available for download on their website.

Not a valid youtube URL
Final Fantasy 8 had a lasting impression on me. I really connected the the story and characters.

Metal Gear Solid is my favorite gaming franchise.

Xenogears is probably my favorite game of all time. Compelling characters, deep mythos, giant robots.

The great thing is now I can play PS1 games on my psp.

MORROWIND OMFG YES!

For some reason I don't remember Baldur's Gate having music (man it's been so long since I've played that game) but it was one of my favourite games of all time.

Some of the old chiptunes from NES games were freakin' sweet.

If you like classic music,
check the OSTs of Final Fantasy VII/VIII/IX,
especially the orchestral versions n the piano collection!

I also really liked the OST of Wild Arms,
some really nice "acoustic guitar + whistling" tracks... :)

Chrono Cross Soundtrack (this whole game and OST is beautiful)

Gotta have some Mega Man 2 (Guitar mix)

PC Engine/Turbo Duo games had some awesome music

Final Fantasy VIII Liberi Fatali

Final Fantasy IX (whole soundtrack is great)

BlazBlue and Guilty Gear have some good stuff if you like J-metal

Punch-Out... just 'cause

If you ever get a chance, check out Video Games Live or especially Distant Worlds if you like Uematsu/FF music.  I've seen both of these done by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and they were excellent.

Yeah, Baldur's Gate 1 soundtrack ruled. It had something so deeply involving to it that the BG2 scores, although grander and more epic, did not have (still loved them, though). Icewind Dale 1 music might even have been better.

Agreed on Morrowind, too.

Can't recall Total Annihilation. Can recall AOE2, that was some decent stuff.

Some Mass Effect 1-2 scores were great too, especially the way they were put in the game. Speaking of, I loved how they moulded Louis Armstrong tracks into the Fallout series. That's actually how I got hooked on them.

Can't not mention Warcraft 2. Some of the best scores ever.

What else? There was a kinda-indie game called Blackmoon Chronicles from Cryo.

And the Dune 2 tracks. Come on. Even on PC Speaker. The atmosphere...

Europa Universalis, as boring as it was, had some great tracks precisely because it employed real music of the times. I particularly liked playing the game to the 15th century Triste Espana tunes and those saddish court dances. I'd love the nerdy joy of bringing them to a party.

A similar trick was pulled off in Pirates! Gold with those Haendel midis. Sid Meier's Pirates! from 2004 feature real court dances that you actually have to catch the rhythm of as a mini game. The governor's daughter is giving you some helpful hints with her hand gestures but you've got to be quick on higher difficulty levels, especially if you want to pull off a fancy step (which is more difficult than just not flunking it).

Red Alert 3 isn't bad either. Very good music in some places, even though the game itself was too cheesy and had too little substance for my taste.

I liked the use of real Latino music in Tropico. I'd rank it with good rather than spectacular perhaps, but still deserving a mention.

You can probably tell by now that I'm a really busy hard-working person. :P

I like the Super Mario 2 music, but the game sucks... The real Super Mario 2 was only originally released in Japan, but now it is available as a Virtual Counsel game for the Wii. It looks very similar to the original Super Mario Bros. except it was much more difficult... Thats why it was never released outside of Japan, Nintendo thought it would be too hard for Americans to beat... Random fact of the day there...

Lately, I've been kind of obsessed about Cheetahmen. I had to try the game out, it's possibly the worst ever published, but there's something about the main theme that caught my attention. The Japanese seem to love it, and have made a ton of remixes of it.

Those are great.  I like the OC Remix one; their stuff is usually decent.  You could drop that funky chillout mix into the Gran Turismo menus and nobody would blink an eye.

Since I'm new around here, I've been poking around some of the somewhat older threads and found this. I listen to a huge range of music, but lately I've been on a NES/SNES chiptune kick, particularly some Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden:

Then of course there are Uematsu and Mitsuda with Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger/Cross music, but anyone who'd be interested already knows how great they are, I'd hope. :P

Well, i recorded the Descent Music with my Roland SC-55 II, well a part of it. Spent three hours to do that. Theme, Briefing, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4 and Credits. Maybe i'll upload them today evening :).
I only can record until Level 7, because i only got the Shareware, i don't have the retail anymore.

So here it is, uploaded it. Recorded as "hi-fi" as i could with a preamp to get Line level without any distortion, but yeah youtube screwed the quality.
Hope some of you will enjoy that! Afaik the Midis were composed on a SC-55, so it all sounds well, no instruments are "off".

Believe it or not, the "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" is an emulation of the Roland SC-55 i used. Ofcourse the Microsoft Synth has the same "vibe/timbre", but the samples are much shorter and the effects are ignored.
Anyways, here are the last two ones of the Descent Shareware... i have all descent midis here, but they sound a bit different, if i would play them on Winamp.
When i was a kid my favorites were level 2 and 3!

Maybe i'll do the Descent II Soundtrack (only 4 levels were made in Midi music) in a few days. I think on those two Soundtracks the SC-55 really shines.

Hmm, this one?

Generaly AO was hailed for it's musics... I think they used same type of tech than LucArts in MI2

And here's the Descent II Soundtrack! I hope you like that, too!
Enjoy... and prepare for Descent!

Jerri
PS: Maybe i'll upload the mp3s in a zip file or something.

I love the Descent music Jerri, thanks for your work getting those up!

Lately I've been reminded of a guy, lonlonjp that arranges his own versions of a lot of popular songs, mostly video-game related, to play on guitar. IMO, one of his most impressive videos was his version of "Time's Scar," which was originally written to be performed by a full orchestra. Here is the original:

And Lonlonjp's version, it's roughly around 1:10 that I started to be blown away:

Had to link this as well for good measure:

What I love is this guy is ridiculously nice, and just an average office worker, that happens to be extremely talented, and does these videos and arrangements for his own and others' enjoyment.

Thanks man! I would have done that for a long time. Because sometimes it could be very useful for people, who search for Midi Synthesizers!
When i bought the Roland i thought, well lets look on youtube and hear some examples, but there weren't any! You get the idea, what i mean.
And i think the SC-55 really shines on descent. Like the MT-32 shines really on Monkey Island!

Anyways, if somebody likes them really much, here is the Download link of the MP3s (much better quality than youtube, especially the highs!):
The file is ~120megs, the password is midigeek

Yeah i know it's more about the vgmusic itself, but now i've done that, what i were to lazy for ;) .
Have fun!

Thanks for reminding me of Devil's Crush, haven't thought of that in a while.  Unfortunately my PCE/CDROM˛ power supply died a couple weeks ago; gotta find another one. :[
