Anyone else paying attention to it?

Basically, Palm's back with a vengeance. Amazing UI, looks like good hardware, finally multitasking, etc., etc.

Only problem is... signed apps. (Well, and no backwards compatibility, but that one was gonna be harder, and Palm's alluded to third-parties releasing Garnet emulators for it.) Which, once Garnet is killed off, would make Windows Mobile the only open smartphone OS.

No, I'm not forgetting about Android.

The sole US consumer implementation of Android requires either signed apps or a root exploit (read: a form of jailbreak,) too. And I'm sorry, I can't afford a dev phone. And, Android's alpha-quality anyway.

I was, however, forgetting about BlackBerry, but BB has a restricted API for unsigned apps, AFAICT.

Is it true this is coming to Sprint? And what's a signed app? The one thing I care about is the aqbility to open and edit Word docs — in fact, if it doesn't do that just say so and I'll never care about this phone again.

Well, it's looking like March is the expected launch date, based on some rumors.

This is definitely coming to Sprint first, they announced it was a Sprint exclusive launch. (Then a GSM version will be launched for other markets.)

A signed app is basically... an application that Palm has put their "digital signature" on. If it doesn't have Palm's signature, it may not be able to run. This means that Palm (and possibly Sprint, by proxy) may have control over what programs can run on the phone.

IIRC, DataViz is one of Palm's partners in the launch, and seeing as their main product is Documents to Go...

What do you think for cost? $600? I have Sprint and I have a credit for a phone upgrade I was thinking of using in Feb., maybe I'll hold off for a bit.

My guesses are in the $249-299 area with new line or phone upgrade credits.

Ed Colligan already said it'd be more than $199. (Or, rather, something along the lines of, "why would we price it the same as the iPhone and G1, at $199, when we're much better than those?")

Were you a Palm fan already or is it this device that got you pumped up?

Dude, I bought a friggin Centro. :p

Only two types of people buy those.

1. 12 year old girls
2. Total Palm fanboys.

Seeing as I'm 20, and last I checked, I'm not a girl... yeah. :p

And, this device... I first thought Palm was dead in the water from the liveblogs I was paying attention to, then I saw video and got pumped up, then I saw the comment about signed apps and got pissed off. :p

Hey!  I have a Centro, and I just turned 30, and, no, I am not a girl.  I just wanted something basic with Exchange support.

I was being slightly sarcastic. ;)

But, yeah, I own four devices with PDA functions.

All four run Palm OS. (A Kyocera QCP-6035 running 3.5.3, a Sony Clie PEG-SJ22 running 4.1.0, an Abacus AU5005 Wrist PDA running 4.1.2 (and use it daily,) and the Centro, running 5.4.9.)

It's amazing how little Palm's OS has been upgraded.  Back in the day I had a Tungsten T (First in the tungsten line, costed $499 ) and it ran 5.0.1.

What's even scarier is, 5.4 came out in 2004, and 5.4.9 came out in early 2005, IIRC.

I've owned the Palm IIIx, Tungsten C, and Tungsten TX.  The TX was great because I had it paired to my cell phone for cellular data access...so I could jump between wifi and cell data whenever.  I really liked the Palm OS.

These days, I stick to my Blackberry and iPhone's.

What, you wanted Garnet or something?

Garnet is a festering pile of crap that should've been replaced 3 years ago.

A festering pile of crap with a good UI, but a festering pile of crap nonetheless.

ANYTHING is better than WinMo.  I'd actually prefer they hurry up on the Access Linux Platform and be using that.  And as for that "festering pile of crap", I have a copy of Docs2Go so compatability is an important factor.

Well, DocsToGo isn't a Palm exclusive...

And, they're going to a split strategy, it looks like... Treos running WinMo for business, Pres running webOS for dual use, and leftover Centros running Garnet for cheapasses.

I have to admit I fell off the Palm bandwagon the day I saw Windows Mobile on a Treo.

I use my blackberry for turn-by-turn GPS navigation.  Best GPS I've seen.  (TeleNav)
