Title: Most expensive keyboard on ebay
Post by: Roguemaster8 on Wed, 15 February 2012, 02:41:01
And I bet it's not even mechanical. May be scissor switch though, anyone have any information on this?

Not most expensive, but definitely an interesting space saver for those confined to a chess table as a desktop.

UPDATED: Found this one going for $2500, I believe it's used for x-ray machines. Definitely NOT for the tenkeyless lover who enjoys real estate on their desk.

Considering that these go new on Thinkgeek for $1800, apparently there's good money to be made on eBay if anyone goes for this.

"Then you use this special high end tool called key remover.."

I want one of those high end key removers. I only have 3 low end ones currently.

And then he is Trolled and his excuse is " those keys didn't have any displays on it"

Seriously who would describe a key remover as a high end tool :der:

Don't be knocking Tema's accent; instead vote in his LJ bewb contests (http://tema.livejournal.com/).

Since I don't game, I have never even understood the desire for backlighting, and am even annoyed that my Leopold has 3 such bright indicator LEDs.

This certainly proves "different strokes for different folks" since there is also a large market for totally blank unmarked keys.

I would be interested to know how many "keyboard enthusiasts" in this forum (have ever) own(ed) these behemoths.

There are two reasons for backlighting. One is bling. The other is for hunting and pecking.

What's gaming got to do with backlighting?  Nothing... except that 'oooh shiny' and gaming tend to hang out together.  I'm infected with 'oooh shiny' but haven't found a backlit board that's good enough for me, so I'm working on my own... and it's all about 'ooooh shiny' and nothing about gaming even though I do play games.

Having backlighting outside of "I dont know how to touch type and I'm in a dark room" reasoning, is purely for looks. Which isn't bad. We invest a lot of money on PBT dye sub keycaps purely for looks.

This isn't just back lighting though, this is 104 miniature LCD screens.

I wonder if they would sell me a key or two for $20 just for the screens.

I like shiny everything (I even have a plexiglass longboard with LEDs in it) - so of course I want a glowing keyboard.

I would imagine the Optimus Maximus might be useful for people using Final Cut Pro or something - that program had a lot of keyboard shortcuts.  It would be helpful to have them displayed on the key.

They used to sell the 3-screen "keyboard" (it's discontinued now). http://www.artlebedev.ru/everything/optimus/mini-three/ (http://www.artlebedev.ru/everything/optimus/mini-three/)
The pricey one too. ~$150

I use to want an Optimux Maximus until I heard of a few issues with the small OLED displays getting less bright over a short amount of time. I saw one of these boards sell used on eBay for $600.

Also, seeing how they have the connectors for the OLED displays, the switch might be rated for 20E6 operations, but the connector for the OLED display will probably wear out ofter 1e5 or less.

Also, blue OLED is rated for 20,000 hours or something? They should fix that.

And the other is typing at night, I can touch type like a champ but trying to find the keys for a plethora of smilies and emoticions (also the F1-12 keys) is MUCH faster with optical guidance in a dark room.

Also, having to wait for your fingers to find the two home row bumps while fumbling for them in the dark isn't exactly fast or ideal.   To me backlighting increases efficiency quite a bit.  Add in the fact that you can turn it off while watching a movie etc and it makes it quite hard to find a downside to having it.

Don't let the poor taste choices of gamers (bling) ruin good concepts for you.  =D

Not that it's even close to the most expensive one I've seen, but does anyone know what switches are in the Amray / who's its OEM?

What good is a keyboard without led's?

The comment was not about LEDs in general. Indicators are fine.

But my Leopold has eye-burners, just like so many of the new cars that blow away your night vision when they put on the brake lights.

And since there have been a whole bunch of replies to this thread, including other aspects of my post, is it safe to assume that no Geekhacker has actually owned and/or used one of these bizarre things?

I mentioned it in some other thread where the Optimus was brought up... aggiejy had the Mini Three (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?20611-RIP-Art-Lebedev-Optimus-mini-three).   I haven't heard of anyone else having an Optimus anything.

The new most expensive keyboard on eBay doesn't have mechanical switches, LCD display keys or even back lighting.  Oh, it's wireless.  Yeah!

Title: Most expensive keyboard on ebay
Post by: megnin on Fri, 09 March 2012, 06:01:28
My first thought was that it was a typo or mistake.  The extended warranty for it is $299.99.  There are three listings for it at either $2900.00 or $2900.95.  It's not a typo.

That has to be a typo, or whoever put the listing up doesn't have any common sense.

There's a good chance the AmRay is from an old electron microscope.  I can't confirm, but they typically have a similar high-sensitivity joystick like this does.

Hmm, how old? Our ancient SEM just plugs into a computer, though the TEM we have does have a joystick like that. It's a dinosaur.

Edit: Looks like it's for x-ray
