[IC] Switch Sticker GB round2
« on: Thu, 14 February 2013, 11:33:24 »
Hey everyone, Gupgup here :)

Alright guys I've decided to go with RickyJ, and have been in contact with him about getting some switch stickers made!

Him and I are currently talking and are working on getting together to make this happen.

If we do get this going, we will have a huge option for colors.

I'm going to move this into the group buy section soon, as soon as me and Ricky get some details worked out!

Colors Available ATM

- Yellow
- Pink
- Light Purple
- Red
- Blue
- Dark Blue
- Green
- Teal
- Grey
- Gold Fleck
- Silver Fleck
- White
- Gloss Black
- Matte Black

These are what are available right now. Will Update once I hear of more.

Are you looking to source them from somewhere (new vinyl sticker printed by new vendor) and do a group buy with that method? Or are you asking for contacts for the Korean ones?

Sherryton has started selling stickers from his stock too. Those are the same ones from the first group buy, in new colors.

I wanted to get the Korean ones in bulk and get some contacts that I could talk to!

Does sherryton have quite a lot, making this useless or could this still supply people that his/her stock couldn't?

Thanks acetrak

If the sheets are significantly cheaper or different colors than sherry's then I would do it, if not, it's not really worth it. (Don't want to be a party pooper)

Once I know who to contact and if they are willing, maybe I'll hold a poll for the most wanted colors and what not!

I will do whatever everyone wants as long as this gets going :)

Good luck in finding a contact. These contacts require some networking and most likely won't be found just because you posted a thread asking for it. To start, you might want an account on kbdmania.net and put yourself out there.

Yeah I've got one, I Pmd demik asking who he was in contact with when he was in Korea, I'm hoping he will be able to help me out.

Not sure what I can really do on kbdmania, as I can't look at the marketplace and most speak Korean :/

Pretty hard to source these directly. I've tried to make a thread on kbmania asking if they can help me out to get some, and said I'd return the favor somehow and still no response. You'll actually have to know someone to help you get it because randomly asking won't do much good.

But for what it's worth, it doesn't do much to the switch in terms of feel. You'll have to really pay attention to the bottom out to even notice the difference. Lube on the other hand, is another story.

Stickering is a waste of time IMO, but if I modding a keyboard, I'm going to go all out even if it does take a little more time

Man my jnterest checks are having the worst luck.  I wish these were easier to get. I'll see what demik has to say and if that doesn't look good maybe I'll look at other ways to produce these.

User RickyJ had some of these made locally to him in Canada. And SmallFry said he had the Korean pattern drawings. You might contact them to see if you could have some repros made and do a GB for them. I would buy some purple ones.

Yes I have, and he said they are really thick. Again I was hoping to get the original Korean ones made again. And Alaric I didn't know how many sheets he had, as I stated earlier in thread maybe there wouldn't be enough to go around.

I believe the first sticker group buy was at $4 per sheet and at originative it is $7. Just depends if people want it now for $3 more expensive compared to how long it will take to run a group buy and receive them from Korea or Canada. I can personally be patient because Phatnom, LZ-GH, GH60, etc won't be arriving for awhile.

If you are  interested in more than stickers the cost difference will be eaten by the combined shipping from Originative.

I'm hoping to have a forum of the available colours, and the top voted ones will be what will be made. Probably top 3 or 4.

Hopefully they will be more unique of colors than the original red, blue, green, yellow

I'm told there is a wide variety of colors available, more than he has said in his thread.

I'll update the colors in this OP as I learn of more.

Hmm, just saw this thread! Didn't know you were trying to start a gb before seeing my thread, makes a bit more sense!

My own goal was to open a simple store so my gf can sell custom painted caps (and her specialty: custom pasties for the ladies), sell short run sticker sheets in a wide array of colours...with a catch! Since my gf has been on the long road to recovery from Leukemia for the last 9 years, I wanted a portion of each sale to be donated to the BC Cancer Foundation.  I hope you all can understand my position, donating to cancer research while making you guys happy via short order special colour stickers.

For a gb I'd still like to include a charitable donation for my efforts, in Geekhack's name of course. Gupgup can receive a bulk shipment from myself I'm sure, and ship cheaper than I can within the US. I'll try to get non-potato colour pics in the next few working days so you all can pick a few to run with.

Does this make sense? :)

It sounds perfect! I love the donation idea, and would love to help out!

As far as the colors, that's a good idea too. If we could get pictures of all the ones available, then it'd be easier for people to fill out the forum and decide on the top 3 or 4!

Not really concerned with color, probably black, as it wouldn't show or conflict, but probably white as well.

Didn't have time to measure all of his stock, but did find that some are 2-mil (0.002") which is too thin.  Hoping to get some time on Monday to sort through for 4-mil in stock, and see what colours are available to order in that thickness.

Someone asked for an install vid in my build thread, so I thought I'd post it here too. :)

At this point in time, it'll be quicker to get stickers from sherryton. His store will be up in a week or two. But $7 a pop seems like a large profit margin. Doing a GB for these is a good idea of there are a lot of custom colors and price is a lot cheaper. If you've participated in GB's before, it takes months from the IC to get the item in your hands.

Plan is to cut the stickers into sheets of 60 (either 6x10 or 5x12), so they'll fit into a regular mail envelope for cheap shipping.  Still sold per 120, for a full keyboard with spares.

4-mil greens in stock:

4-mil blues in stock:

Not quite "50 Shades of Grey"

Getting a catalog soon from the supplier of 4-mil, should be lots of colours to choose from!

Cool to see you guys are also running with this. I'm still waiting on a sticker sample so I can create my own layout and run them through my cutter. With the increase in shipping costs, perhaps we should look a doing a GB in several countries and coordinate shipping from each country?

The Korean's sticker file is on their website here. Looks like they don't want us producing it, but we can ask them at least.
Note: KBDMania account needed, I am not going to publish the file here, due to their need of an account etc.

Waiting for word back from suppliers.  In the meantime, I tested out a different grade of vinyl for the switch stickers, and also shimmed up the Vortex plate in my Poker (too thin).  The grade of vinyl that the hardly-visible purple stickers are is quite a bit different, definitely will not be using this grade for production.

Another pic for kicks:

Rick, that's a great video!  I apologize for not being able to have gotten around to doing anything with the beta stickers yet... I've honestly not even touched my computer at home in 5 days now I've been so busy.

What I can say, is that comparing these to other stickers, the tolerances are MUCH tighter.  Sure, you don't get that 'outline' around your switch, since the sticker isn't quite as large, but that's because they fit better.  If anything, I find them easier to install.  I'll get some comparison pictures this weekend.

were the samples 2mil or 4mil?

Hey if you guys are going through wit this, just a suggestion to separate them in groups of 1/3 of a sheet of paper, and leave a tiny bit of space between the groups so that these vinyl sheets can just be folded and shipped in a normal envelope for 46cents. Demik's old GB for these cost only $4 for the sheet, but shipping was $6 even in the US. That was a bit ridiculous since they can't be folded.

I think I already mentioned that I was going to do them in sheets of 60 (sold per 120) so they'd fit in a regular envelope.  Cost me $0.63cdn to ship a set to Harrison to compare to his Korean ones. :)

Ah did didn't see it mentioned. You have two separate threads on these same stickers so I might have missed it.

I've tried to update both with progress, but I might have missed something. Regular letter mail to the US is ~$1.20cdn plus envelope, so shipping for a set or two isn't cost prohibitive. Haven't weighed a few sets together to see where the shipping tiers will be, and tracking will clearly be more. :)
