Inspiration

The Great Wave off Kanagawa <神奈川沖浪裏>(c 1829-1833) by Katsushika Hokusai
is a woodblock print (Ukiyo-e) and is one of the most reproduced and recognisable images of Japanese artwork in history. World-renowned, it has had a profound influence on Western art culture, but particularly upon the French Impressionists which in-turn shaped the great wave of European Modernism in the 20th Century. Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night also clearly shows significant inspiration from it, with him even writing vividly to his brother Theo:
Hokusai’s "waves are claws, the boat is caught in them, you can feel it".
More
In fact, Hokusai's sophisticated uses of rich hues of blue to create this striking design, led to European artists to incorrectly deem the colour blue as idiosyncratically Japanese, and fuelled the "Japonism" craze at the time (the earliest weebs Japanophiles!). The blue in fact was actually European in origin, commonly known as Prussian Blue, and is the first modern synthetic pigment, spreading rapidly around the world, causing reciprocating ripples of creativity globally, from Paris to Japan.

There's many details to love, such as the intense dramatic tension of the gigantic wave about to break on top of the viewer unfolding in the foreground, to the contrast between the saturated swells and the white crest of foam with its claw-like tendrils. Despite its restrictive palette, it successfully captures a moment in time, portraying the constantly changing movement of the ocean and its vast power. Men in boats appear insignificant amongst the chaos of nature, which even envelops Japan's largest and sacred symbol, Mount Fuji (a focus of Hokusai's spirituality). This referential icon appears as a diminutive triangle in the distance, where it could be easily missed and mistaken for another ocean wave. This defied traditional Japanese compositions of perspective at the time, and Hokusai thus skillfully blends European structure, with Japanese motifs and techniques into a seamless work of enduring international appeal.

To us, the significant history behind this artwork and the pigment Prussian blue (berorin-ai; ベロリン藍) highlights the role of cultural exchange at the heart of creative discovery, and to continue to celebrate this spirit, we're using this iconic seascape as the theme for a keycap set design we think lots of people will also love too.

Design

Besides being a tribute to an ubiquitous artwork of significant cultural influence, we hope that our design is humbly evocative of the vast and infinite seas and sky. From a deep, muted navy hue that transitions to crispy ice-white, we wish to recall the endless beauty of crashing ocean waves, summer skies, and even crystalline glaciers. Timeless, enduring, and elegant, the blue of water is able to evoke many different emotions and scenes of nature.
During development I noticed that there are many keycap set designs that are Japanese themed, and/or Blue, and/or a Gradient pattern. Well you can forget about the rest, because this manages to cover all of those features in one go!

※ Announce Pricing
※ Fix a Group Buy Date

Q&A
More
※  When will this be available for purchase?
This will depend on our communication with vendors (regional storefronts responsible for handling purchases and shopping). We will aim to have a group-buy date period sometime in the second quarter of 2021.
For newbies, a groupbuy is the one month period, where stores collect pre-order purchases. Note it is typically months afterwards, depending on the manufacturer’s production line, for these keycaps to be made and shipped.

※  What is KAT?
↠ KAT profile is a sculpted keycap profile manufactured by Keyreative.
↠ Side comparison diagram to cherry (GMK), SA, and OEM profile courtesy of keycaps.info:
↠  It is made of PBT plastic; meaning less likelihood for shine over use compared to ABS
↠  Legends are dye sublimated
↠  It is compatible with Cherry MX style switches on most mechanical keyboards
↠ Here are photos of caps from other Keyreative sets that have been produced or are in development: KAT Eternal (https://i.redd.it/8wtpj9ext9261.jpg), KAT Eternal (https://i.redd.it/mu35rex20az51.jpg), , KAT Napoleonic (https://i.imgur.com/mKCUn5P.jpeg), KAM 80s After Dark (https://i.imgur.com/Rm0xkPU.jpg)

※  Why so many kits?
It can appear overwhelming, but for the majority of users, a Core Alpha kit +  Modifier kit will cover 60/65%, +/- F-row kit to cover 75%/TKL, and Numpad to cover 100% layouts. If you’re in Europe, you might prefer your regional alphas instead.
This specific manufacturer's Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) structure however permits us to support extra compatibility for those who use less popular keyboard forms. As long as the overarching goal of the minimum number of keycap “units'' sold for production is met, all kits will be made.
This approach should be applauded; giving those who enjoy using less popular layouts an opportunity to purchase a set for their favoured form. It also embraces the customizability spirit of this hobby, offering people their pick of legends for alphas and modifiers.
However, a high number of kits is also logistically more challenging for vendors, and is time-consuming from the designers perspective. We'll do our best to cater, but there is a limit to what we can or are allowed to do.
It's been particularly tricky ensuring the gradient applies to non-standard layouts (like 40s/orthos/colemak/ergo), so let us know if we've made any mistakes given our unfamiliarity with those exotic form factors.

※  What colours of blue did you pick?
We are using shades of blue based on the Pantone GP1601A Coated and Uncoated Formula Guide, and selected them based on how well they transitioned with each other.
In regards to the specific colour codes, until group buy, only the manufacturer (for samples), and artisan/cable collaborators will be privy to that information. There are photos of the pantone above though if you wanted to see what it looks like on paper via camera phone.
During the IC period we will continue to try and improve renders to better represent the exact colours better, but note that due to render software lighting, and individual monitor differences, there will be variations.

※  Do you consider the colours/font/icons/kits/novelties final?
Not at all, we are still very open to suggestions and improvement, especially if there is significant consensus and/or expertise opinion regarding feasible adjustments, such as kitting.

※ Is the kanji you are using for the Escape key correct?
From asking around: 中止(stop)、終了(finish; complete) and 退出(exit; leave; withdraw), were informed as reasonable kanji-based options. Keycap sets Kuro Shiro and SimpleJA in fact use 終了, however we wanted to focus on the beauty of a single kanji character if possible.
Thus we went with "終" which has been used in old films, where it is displayed on the screen at the end, in lieu of the French "fin". If you are a native Japanese speaker, please leave a message on any other terminology errors or suggestions. Thanks to Kidviddy for aiding with translations.

Fun Facts
More
※ The term Manga was created by the artist Hokusai
※ Arising from the Edo period, the Great Wave art may be Hokusai’s most famous work, but he didn’t produce the piece until 70 years old, after creating more than 30,000 works of art.
※ The wave print was part of a 36-piece series known as Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.
※ Despite its popularity, the series was not considered great art by Japanese art historians of the time. They viewed uikyo-e as a form of commercial printing – not fine art, beneath consideration for artistic merit. But today, original woodblock prints are beloved by museums and galleries around the world
※ Hokusai was influenced by Dutch artist's techniques of vanishing point perspective, evidenced by the illusion of depth, and a low horizon line; abandoning traditional Japanese isometric view, where motifs are scaled according to importance.
※ There are echoes of golden ratio throughout the artwork, where the fractal nature of breaking wave mirrors the mathematical beauty of nature itself.
※ Prussian blue is the traditional "blue" in both blueprints and aizuri-e (藍摺り絵) Japanese woodblock prints. It was imported from China and the Netherlands (the only countries Japan traded with in the 1830s).
※ The colour "Berlin Blue" found its way to the printmaking industry in Osaka where it was trafficked as “bero”, where its vivid hue, tonal range and foreignness saw it explode in popularity just as it had in Europe.
※ Before Prussian blue reached Japan, printmakers used the blue dyes indigo and dayflower blue, which are much less vibrant.
※ This compound is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a basic health system. It is used as an antidote for certain kinds of heavy metal poisoning

Thanks for all the positive responses, and to those who filling out the feedback form!

Given how well it's polling, the original artwork will feature as a deskmat.

A traditional seigaha pattern deskmat (as non-original as it is) is also highly likely to feature. We just weren't sure if there'd be any demand for these designs given GMK Bento's deskmats also are seigaha wave patterns.

Note that novelties are an evolving design space. We understand some of them might not appeal to you all, but we've left different designs that might speak to different people's preferences.
Some of the elements, like the birds, the octopus, and the finely detailed wave are in fact all direct references to other woodblock prints by Hokusai.
Regarding the origami crane folding novelties; I like the final completed cranes, but the steps/instructions will possibly be culled to make way for more thematically relevant wave element designs.

Renders are displaying a slightly saturated blue compared to the actual blue pantone we've picked in real life, so we're going to revisit tweaking it better. To my eyes, the dark blue is a bit less saturated and a touch darker, thus a bit more faithful to the artwork. It is slightly better represented by an older render (https://i.imgur.com/kGeGQ1N.jpg) but we haven't yet nailed the lighting quite down yet. Renders and monitors displaying colours don't always match what coloured plastic actually looks like in your hand. We will get photos of samples to better show the blues in the end.

Would love to see a non-gradient kit if any, but otherwise, great job on the presentation.

I hate the deskmats ...Hopefully they garner a lot of interests!
I don't normally like a single carp image on a deskmat, but maybe it will look good if you combine the koi into the Ryujin? Related to the Koi that transform into the dragon myth in Chinese/Japanese culture if I remembered correctly.

Anyways, Good luck with IC!

I'm very happy today to see such an artwork moving forward.

This is a shut up and take my money moment. Because I want five of thos deskmats

Also, I said this on the form, but is a bit strage that some of the ISO sets get the tall return and others not. If I go for the Spanish set i need to get the UK in order to get the return.
Not a bit issue for me as I also would get the novelties. But it would make sense that all the ISO kits get their return.

Thanks for pointing out that inconsistency. We definitely intended to include ISO enter key and left shift key with all the language kits, but we somehow forgot for German and Spanish kits (we added it but the file crashed and we forgot to re-add before rendering again). They will definitely be included!
----
Also for Colemak kit, during the transition from kitting diagrams to render files, we also noted we forgot to add the extra R3 keys of B (in 2nd lightest blue), and ' " (in white). These will be rectified on next minor update too.
----
Given feedback, we will be adding a few more 1u keys to the Kana sublegend kits too to account for Iso compatibility too

Very excited to see this set come to fruition after what I know has been a long and thorough period of design and iteration!

A couple of thoughts:

All in all, great progress, and good work on the thorough IC! Looking forward to following this set as it progresses.

EDIT: A little more detail on my comment about the アルト/オルト orthography for "Alt". The Japanese Wikipedia article (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altキー#発音および表記のゆれ) on this key gives quite a good summary. It looks as if my initial suspicion -- that オルト is closer to the American pronunciation and アルト is closer to my native English pronunciation -- was more or less correct ("イギリス英語における発音をカタカナで書くと「アルトキー」となる"). The Oxford dictionary lists the pronunciation as /ˈɔːlt/ (closer to オルト), while Cambridge lists it as /ˈælt/ (closer to アルト), while as far as Japanese dictionaries go some list only オルト while others list both オルト and アルト as alternatives.

In conclusion: you could use either, but オルト does seem to be the slightly more common form in Japan, from what I can tell from my brief review this evening.

SECOND EDIT: I got another piece of feedback from the Japanese Discord which I'm adding here to avoid cluttering up the thread with lots of posts.  User otahinosame asks: "Is the vertical alignment of the 0 key not matching the other numbers intentional?"

Although I can see how, taken in isolation, it's tempting to centre-align the 0 legend because there is no punctuation above it, most Japanese keyboards align it with the other numbers and leave the space above blank. I've never really thought about it, but it makes sense: if you're typing in numbers, it's a bit jarring that one of the number legends is out of alignment with all the others.  Anyway, something to think about!

Happy Holidays to everyone! Thanks to all those who have filled out feedback and given suggestions and corrections!

Thanks Kidviddy for all your help with the JIS kitting during this set's development!
Thanks to you and other members from the Japanese Disord for pointing out errors and suggesting alternative terms.  I agree with all of the suggestions.
I was thinking the Windows logo might be a bit jarring, and メタ looks like a much better alternative. Yes you're correct that we're trying to avoid cramming the keys with too many characters/legends if possible.

- JIS Latin Alphas: We will correct the error with the colours of 6 and 7. And we will adjust the alignment of 0 to match the other digits.
- Japanese Text Mods: We will change: (Alt) 無変換 -> オルト ; 変換 -> 拡張機能 * ;  Windows logo -> メタ

*re: 変換 -> 拡張機能 (“extended functionality”) is there an alternative shorter terminology we could utilise? Also any alternative text suggestions that match the theme of the keyset more is always appreciated!

As mentioned above:
In terms of other pending kit changes;
- Novelties: we will be adding more bot row modifiers in light blue; the seigaha wave novelty will have more colour and size alternatives; only the final origami crane novelties will be retained, the steps will be culled; awkwardly the wave circle logo novelty is actually inverse of what was intended (the top of the wave should be white)

- German and Spanish kits: We will be adding Iso Enter and Left Shift keys to (we forgot)
- Colemak+ : We forgot to add the R3 B in light blue to support Colemak DHm (thanks to Kekboii for pointing this out). We also forgot to add R3 ' key to support Colemak DHm ANSI wide variation

I feel like the novelties are a bit inconsistent in terms of visual style, overall though a very tempting set with a nice variety of kits.
Looking forward to getting some of these deskmats too!
Thanks for the feedback. We do have a variety of novelties, and there is a bit variation as some are direct references to other ukiyo-e artworks that Hokusai also drew. We do not expect everyone to use every single novelty, so we tried to cater to different crowds. Some will prefer the subtler references, and others will prefer the louder ones (i.e. dragons). We will keep looking at seeing how to improve them.

if you do japanese mods for the normies will ortho/40s get the same benefit? pls, j 40s mods.
also please include duplicates of all r4 and r5 novelties on any of r1 r2 or r3 for 40s users. thanks, they look amazing so far btw.

Japanese text mods for 40/orthos is an interesting idea. I'm quite reluctant to add any further kits at this stage without good reason. If there is a large group that wishes to replace the Latin text mods for ortho/40s, with Japnese text mods then I'll have to hear and consider it.

okay we will try to duplicate some top row novelties to the bottom for 40s users. In case we can't duplicate all due to kit bloat, which are your top 2-3?
I'm also planning to dodge latin on everything too XD. It's why F-row and numpad kanji are being offered.
Onami is the most popular, and frustratingly the quickest to design haha. I wanted a minimal deskmat to balance the other crazy designs, and initially it was just the emblem. Adding the artwork's title cartouche when I revisited it again 2 months later ended up bringing balance to the force. In regards to 700mm x 300mm deskmat sizes, I'll have to speak to vendors and other designers that have offered it as an option to see if it's feasible. I do feel for those with limited desk sizes who want a smaller size deskmat.

Gib deskmats pls

Love the set and really appreciate you offering the Colemak kit. But why the 7 and = sign in it?

Edit: I think I see now. It’s to support ISO wide. https://colemakmods.github.io/mod-dh/keyboards.html. But shouldn’t the 7 be the dual legend seven to match the other numbers?

You are correct on both accounts. The iso and wide variations necessitated extra keys due to the gradient unfortunately.
Thanks for pointing out that mistake with the sizes of 7 and =, we will correct those legends!

it looks pretty good already i just though in case you end up changing the novelties kit at all it would be nice if there it didn't make you feel like you weren't getting much value unless you had a 60%+ board :P
i really like bow octopus, it would be a nice spacebar/bottom row (i know its kinda covered with the wob octopus, i just really like the bow one)
r1 origami would also be nice

yeah nice, really good to hear, seen some weird gb where people wanted j alphas and latin mods ??? even on a normie set i think its weird wanting latin mods over icon mods but i guess thats just my #preference lol

ahah yeah it do be like that somtimes, i think everybody loves minimal because it can pair well with a greater range of setups.
thanks bro, i know at the end of the day it comes down to numbers. i have only anecdotally heard of a few people being interested in the smaller deskmats so i wouldn't be surprised if most people just want a BIG one. if it doesn't work out it wouldn't be the first time ive been told my interests are too niche...

i like the great wave as well, and kind of like the great koi but i would be interested to see how it could look with "translucent"/semi transparent spots instead of completely blacked out (if that makes sense). idk at the end of the day i probably can only afford to get one mat anyway :P and at the moment its going to be onami

Not the OP, but although it’s common to have ESC or TAB where CAPS normally is, a lot of folks map that to something else. Personally I have it mapped to DEL on tap, CTRL on hold. But you have a CODE there so I personally wasn’t going to ask for it. CTRL is probably 3rd behind TAB and ESC though.

My bad for forgetting to mention it'd be for the Latin/icon ortholinear/40 kits; 40% and and ortholinear layouts have been getting popular and Kat/Kam sets tend to have reliable compatability, which is why I asked for the one "missing" key. That caps lock position is actually quite valuable for reachibility so people put backspace or ctrl there, maybe add a 1u R2 backspace?  Personally I think it makes sense only to use Latin mods with pure Latin alphas, and the key that I believe to be "Code" in the icon set looks like it could be either Tab or Enter, so I wouldn't use it as Ctrl as psxndc suggested. In the Latin ortho mod kit I'd add another light blue r1 key as it might look weird to have either a single blank one or 2 ctrls on the left side; it might look nice if you were able to mirror the bottom row of the Latin kit like you can with the Icons kit. Can you do a render for the ortho kit? I wonder how the bottom left would look considering Z and X are a lighter blue while the left row is dark blue. I've taken a closer read of your inspiration and proposition for this set and I love your passion for the classic print. I think patterns Seigaiha and even one called "Nami Chidori" are appropriate for new deskmats, though this may be too much. My final though even more unreasonable request is for another blank white r1 key, making it the 4th in the ortho mod kit. I noticed the lack of a pair of multipurpose/"abstract" keys in the bottom row to be used in the space bar/layers area, and these keys tend to be comprised of blanks or random icons. Adding another blank white key and a pair of multipurpose keys may greatly help users with a grid and/or split layout, which split 40/50s tend to be. Sorry for the long reply, I had initially asked only for a single key to be added to the ortholinear sets and just look at how this has turned out. I'm on my phone too lol

On the Colemak kit, I see that you’ve updated the 7 and + keys to new dual legends (awesome, thank you!), but I believe the #, ], and \ keys need to be updated too. They are the same keys as on a QWERTY layout, they’ve just been moved.

That means ] needs } and \ needs |.

I must confess I don’t know what the # key is doubled up with; ~ maybe for ISO? - I’m not a wide mod or ISO person.

I wish I could @dvorcol. They’d know.

In the ortho + 40s kit the "\ " is with a "?" but it should be with a "|".
I also think that the 40s kit needs a 1.5U left shift.
Will there also be a japanese text ortho+40s mod kit?

IMO the novelties look great but they don't feel cohesive enough. It looks like they could be at least 2 different novelties kits. I think it has to do with having different line weights for the images.

Kitting Updates/Refinements/Corrections
[Alphas] - shifted R4 Backslash/Pipe key from Modifiers to respective alpha & language kits (thanks to Yh for this suggestion)
- more 1u keys to the Kana sublegend kits added to account for Iso compatibility
[Mods - Latin Text] - R3 1.5U 'backspace' key legend corrected to display 'Back' instead of 'Delete'
[Mods - Japanese Text] - legends change: Windows logo -> メタ; (Alt) 無変換 -> オルト ; 変換 -> 機能 (thanks to Kidviddy)
- R3 1.5U 'backspace' key legend corrected to state 'Backspace' instead of 'Delete'

[Novelties] - folding origami crane steps culled ; more seigaha wave novelties added ; wave emblem colours corrected to display novelties for R4 and R5 supplemented for both; added 2 more bot row modifiers in lighter blue for 40/ortho users
- 大波 changed to 大浪 (thanks Kidviddy and Jeffecy)

[Blanks/Columns] - decision to avoid making generic blanks, and added graphic legends that have Japanese symbology from family crests (mons)
We will be likely changing at least two or three of the designs to improve overall consistency (far bottom left and 2nd row+2nd column designs are likely too fine detailed)

[40/orthos] - significant amount of adjustments based off Dr Higsby from the 40s discord, giving feedback.
There are now 7x 1.25u bottom row modifiers. Reduction in total number of 1.5 u modifiers.
R2 1u dark navy blue shift was culled. Code to be used here instead.
R1 blue right shift sizes: 1u, 1.25u, 1.5u, 1.75u. left white shift sizes: 1u, 1.5u, 1.75u.
Reduction in 1.75u bottom row keys. Now only have 1x. It should be white and say "Lock."
R3 backspace sizes: 1u, 1.5u, 1.75u, 2u
Caps lock key cut
Spacebars in WHITE: 1u, 1u, 1.5u, 1.5u, 1.75u, 1.75u, 2u, 2u, 2.25u, 2.75u
Only one of each blank 1us.

[Colemak+] -  added  forgotten additional B in light blue to support Colemak DHm (thanks Kekboiit). R3 ' key added to support DHm wide variation as well. Corrected error where some legends were mono, instead of dual (thanks psxndc)
[German] - Forgotten Iso Enter and Left Shift keys were added to match other language kit compositions
[Spanish] - Forgotten Iso Enter and Left Shift keys were added to match other language kit compositions
[JIS Latin Alphas] - colours of 6 and 7 fixed. Alignment of 0 adjusted to match the other digits (thanks to Kidviddy)

Added kit [R4 Kanji] - 0-9, and Esc in Kanji, kit added for 60/65% users to use with latin alphas

Current kitting considerations:
- Adding Ergo kit
- 40/orthos - changing to Japanese text mods instead of English text mods? Icon mods will remain.
- ?Adding a Media kit - unsure which row this should be added to - R4?
- ?Offering a standalone TKL base kit (Icon mods and Latin alphas)?
- Await further feedback on JIS kitting re: sufficient demand for 4.5u spacebar
- Optimising novelties kit further

Deskmats
- Due to popular demand, the Original Artwork will be added as a deskmat
- Ryu (partial dragon design) might be on potential chopping block due to not polling as well as the other larger Dragon, (Ryujin)
- Enso and Seigaha polled decently well as additional options, but at this stage unclear if we have room for more deskmat designs. Debating whether or not to do a deskmat only GB potentially.

Colours
Photographs of Pantone colour reference on paper added to IC ; lighting in kit renders also adjusted in attempt to show that darkest blue shade is in fact a bit darker in real life

Vendors for Canada, South America, and Ukraine/Belarus/Russia (non-EU Europe) are confirmed
Currently in other regions such as: NA, EU, OCE, SEA etc. are still being decided

Thanks for leaving positivity, helpful comments, corrections, and suggestions everyone! Hopefully we can finalise vendors soon to confirm the GB date, and move towards getting some collaborations confirmed. I will strive to answer some of the earlier thread comments in the next day.

You are correct the pipe is paired with backslash and not a question mark. We have shifted this key entirely from all mods to the Alpha kits.
For 40s/ortho shift keys, we need to double check, but based on the advice we've been given about 40s kitting (Dr Higsby) we'll be aiming for Left (dark blue) sizes in 1u, 1.25u, 1.5u, 1.75u. and right in the following sizes: 1u, 1.5u, 1.75u.
We are strongly considering a japanese text ortho+40s mod kit. Hopefully more people vocalise this interest. It would have to replace the English test ortho+40s mod kit though due to our number of kits.
The novelties kit do have some stylistic variations due to some being somewhat direct copies of Hokusai's artwork, and others are more inspired/thematic. We have decided to keep both subtle, simpler designs and those that are a bit more busy/complex, as people have many different preferences; no one puts all of them on at once. We'll keep working on improving them.

When i this projected release
when are we expecting this to show up as more than a interest check.  By far one of my favorites.
Sorry, no projected release yet, but we're aiming to nail our NA Vendor this coming fortnight, and that will help with us setting a groupbuy date. We're aiming in the first half of this year, and sooner than later if possible. Really depends on vendor.

in for that cat deskmat.
Hehe, I'm so happy it turned out well.

Love the colors, might have trouble getting some of the novelties to work in the end, no?
The novelties will have no issue, as the legends are dye-subliminated on PBT, thus the technical requirements for minimum line widths and gaps is significantly less restrictive (i.e. 0.1mm) versus the double-shot/triple shot legends on ABS keycaps (GMK, JTK, SA).

Great set, and I really like Onami. The Colemak +DHm is pretty rare. If it isn't too much to ask for, could you add a r2 1u ctrl key?
Hi which layout would this R2 1u ctrl key pertain too?
We've updated our ortho/40s kitting, and also the columns kit, so there should be better coverage, and also random icons for use to supplement other compatibility needs.
A seigaha deskmat is very tempting (although it'd look very similar to Bentos deskmat tbh). Nami Chidori is a cool pattern, but I'd prefer Seigaha if I had to pick.

For the novelties, I recommend changing the key that says 大波 (wave) to 大浪 (onami). Just cause as a person who can read Chinese characters 大波 kinda means big boobs
All the more reason to keep it the way it is.  :))
You know what you’re totally right
Due to the innuendo noted by multiple Chinese speakers, 大波 (wave) has been shifted to 大浪 (onami). The latter's second character is also the same one used in the original title, thus is a better reference to the theme.
I did partly want to keep it 大波, because it was hilarious having all these comments about its alternative meaning that I didn't know about.

90% buy for me, 100% once the Ergo goes up!
We're still working on ergo... it will take some time. Any sets (particularly gradient) with good ergo kitting you know about? If it doesn't turn out well due the pattern gradient, we might have to ditch it.

I'm in for the Alpha, Mods (one set), Novelties, and Ōnami (Hoping for 1200mm x 600mm)! Love this theme and what I'm seeing!
Thanks! I'm not sure about Onami coming in alternative sizes as 900mm x 400mm tends to be community standard and vendors' expectations.

Ah thanks for pointing out these things we missed, we'll get back to rectifying it!

Any explanation why on deskmat "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is missing 2nd boat which is on original picture and also on deskmat "Great Cats off Kanagawa" please? :-)
There's actually 3 boats, and the highest quality Great Wave off Kanagawa artwork I have on hand does not appear to have it. I'll have to research more into it, but do note that not all prints of Kanagawa are the same, because over time, the woodblock prints have variations, either unintentional when they deteriorate with use, and also when they get remade, there are adjustments deliberately done by the publisher. I'll look into this more though.

Some new renders added, featuring the Chasm (by Valheru), and LX60 (Smith). We'll drop by frequently to show off some new renders whilst we finalise the last touches on our kitting and discussions with vendors.

Kitting Updates:

KAT sculpt profile changed to R4, R4, R3, R2, R1, R1; from R5, R4, R3, R2, R1, R1 (Nopun10did suggestion).
Other profiles such as SA and Cherry profile often have their F-row and number-row be the same sculpt. Furthermore Artisan makers like RAMA, use KAT R4 profile sculpt for collabs. This will also permit 60/65% users who use latin alphas, but want Kanji numbers on their num-row, the ability to use those from F-row kit.
--
Modifiers Jap Text - legend terminology change from 機能 to 大浪 as direct reference to theme instead of being a generic term (Kidviddy suggestion)

F-Row - R5 Escape keys removed as the R4 Esc remains in the standard mods kit (the Kanji specific one will remain)

Columns - several designs changed to be more visually cohesive with existing mons
(https://i.imgur.com/T80xWIG.png)

UK, Nordic, German, and Spanish - all iso enter/shift keys moved to respective Base Mod kits (icon and text). This is for easier and consistent kitting (Japanese text modifiers already has Iso enter and shift keys in it)
Spanish - excess keys removed, and optimised further to reduce kit cost
UK - alphas incorporated into the standard US Alphas (unless there are vocal complaints to split the UK alphas into its standalone alpha kit)

Colemak - punctuation keys corrected to be double legends
---
To be done:
Numpad - R5 navkeys will need to be removed (just noticed we forgot about these)

40/ortho kit - Jap text version to be rendered for purposes of polling versus English text. Only one of those options will be made available. Icon modifiers will remain

JIS - mods kit will need revision gives transition of Iso enter and shift keys into core kits. Poll results regarding 4.5u Spacebar has been sent to Keyreative. Awaiting outcome if they will make this mold or not

Consider a TKL only base kit (US Alphas + Icon mods)? Considering a kitting that is stripped back like KAT Cyberspace's TKL only kit: no compatibility for ISO, HHKB, 65%/75% etc
---
Ergo kit is currently strongly considered for exclusion due to excessive number of kits and complexity of creating a compatible kit. If you wish for this kit to be reality, please make your voice heard. Extra points if you have examples of another pattern gradient set kitting, or KLE we can follow.

Note that, despite Keyreative MOQ system being more flexible than GMK, we can't make an unlimited number of kits given the demands it places on logistics for vendors. Thus due to the limited amount of kit spots available, we will make harsh decision based on polls and designers' arbitrary preferences, on which are the kits we decide to include in the end.

I would probably look best for the white to transition to the blue gradients similar to the yellow to blue shift in the Vilebloom!

Count me as another voice in favor of ergo kit! SA Vilebloom, as mentioned above, would make a good basis for a kit, but if the ergo kit could have compatibility with the current gradient alpha kits that would be great. If I have time this weekend I'll try to mock up some different kit ideas.
Edit: keeping it compatible with the alpha kits also works out better for Boardwalk users.

Thanks for expressing interest in Ergo. The SA Vilebloom kit is unique in that it has standalone alphas and its own pattern. It doesn't have compatibility with other gradient alphas in this set, hence why we're not a fan of copying its structure (because we'd like ppl to have the option pick their preferred alphas i.e. Latin, Hiragana sublegends and Katakana only).
If you can think of a way to have an ergo kit have compatibility with the current alphas, I would love to see some kit ideas!

From looking at other sets that have Ergo kitting; some go blanks, whilst others also offer icon and/or text. We'd like to stick to just one type if possible due to SKUs. Thus we're happy to go with whatever is most preferred.
Blanks seem easiest, but I'm not sure how well liked that is compared to icons, which adds a lot of keys.
I wonder if it'll remain visually cohesive if we use legends from other kits as well (from Japanese terminology to the novelties from Mons column kit etc) to make the physically compatible keys generic enough for different use cases? Food for thought. If you have any ideas, drop your thoughts below.

In the mean-time, we've noticed a minor error with 40s/Ortho kit in terms of shift keys (some are missing), so we'll correct that.
We'll also mock up a Jap text modifier version too, as that appear to be polling better than the Latin text modifiers, thus it is highly likely it'll replace that kit. Just trying to just figure out the best terms to use in place of Lower, Raise and Code.

Ortho/40s kitting:
Given multiple requests for a Japanese text option for Ortho/40s kit, we have decided to mock one up, and see what are people's preferences of it. Note that icon legends will remain as they're the most popular option by far.

Note that for the terms "Raise"/"Lower", we're using 水面/水底 which mean  “Above the water” and “Below the depths". Also in place of the term "Menu" we have 時化 which means "Stormy weather (at sea)". This was based off some creative suggestions from the Japanese discord community that kidviddy asked on our behalf. Opting for the thematic terms seemed more flexible for kitting, versus a conservative direct translation of exact keyboard legend terminology. Thus also considering using the term for calm sea on some of the blue blank 1us, as an opportunity to reduce 'blanks'.

To be transparent, I have a clear preference, but considering I don't use this layout, I'd like to avoid personal bias, thus here's a public poll, as we're trying to exercise some mild restraint on our number of kits: https://www.strawpoll.me/42509055

I appreciate some ergo users voicing that they would like compatibility, versus us culling the option, however I'd like to humbly request some assistance on how to mock one up (Simple MS paint, (or KLE) is perfectly fine).  It got very confusing even doing a simpler 'blanks' kit (using one of Swishy's Ergo kits on KAM 80s after dark as a base), and the blue gradient keys for 1us stumped me. See scuffed MSPaint mockup:
(note that alphas in orange box won't be included and are purely there to portray how the mods would look with existing alphas)

EDIT: Update, I've made a blind stab at completing the blanks, but going to be honest, I have no idea if this is correct:

If you have suggestions of what legends to add (general japanese thematic text,  existing novelties, mons, icons etc) feel free to mock it up too, as I know that might be preferred to blanks.

Of course I would much prefer it to be compatible with our existing alpha patterns, however if people prefer we can just copy SA vilebloom's mirrored gradient kitting instead (see: https://assets.bigcartel.com/product_images/217414366/05_Ortho-06_Ergo.jpg?auto=format&fit=max&w=2000). This would be quite simple to do, as we would just copy its kitting.

Here's a good resource for making KAT ergo kits: https://old.reddit.com/r/ErgoMechKeyboards/comments/i3rs23/quick_dirty_kat_ergo_kit_guide/, as there are certain considerations regarding the row/profile for some keys.

I like the gradient as-is.

If the kit uses Japanese text or novelties, that minimizes the number of keys needed in the kit. If it uses icons, additional keys will be needed; because of this, icons + Vilebloom-style gradient would be an unnecessarily bulky kit. Personally, I prefer the look of icons over the Japanese text, but it may not be worth the complication of additional keys.

I made a really ugly mockup of what Japanese text would look like, with the light blue keys blank because there was no Japanese text for me to copy, lol. (https://i.imgur.com/fsSyB3Y.png)

And here's a modified KLE layout http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/3a2703783e148deacd213573206cb19a (the two red keys are ones where I don't know what gradient color they should be because I don't know where they go on a board).

Personally, I think a blue-on-white cherry blossom novelty would look great on one of the 2u keys.  :D

Hi, thanks to you (and nopunin10did) for the resources/information on ergo kitting for KAT.
Will look closer into it and spend some time getting my head around it and post up a future mock up for critiques.
I get what you mean by preference for icons (that would be my preference too). From quickly looking at that KLE you mocked up (http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/3a2703783e148deacd213573206cb19a), maybe we could implement icon legends for the 1.5u keys, and a combination of non-specific japanese text, and/or novelty/mons legends to the bottom row 1u gradient modifiers on the left to keep excessive keys to a minimum. The right bottom 1u white keycaps can remain as arrow icon legends. I also have no idea what colours those red coloured keys in the KLE should be, so this may take a few revisions to get right.

We are looking for a June GB hopefully! :thumb:
June GB is looking very likely  :thumb:

And here's a modified KLE layout http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/3a2703783e148deacd213573206cb19a (the two red keys are ones where I don't know what gradient color they should be because I don't know where they go on a board).
I also have no idea what colours those red coloured keys in the KLE should be, so this may take a few revisions to get right.

Good news is I found a more detailed version of the guide https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=105714.0 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=105714.0), which says the red keys are unnecessary since they're included in the alphas.
Ah thank you for your clarification! Based on the rough guide by nopunin10did and your KLE assistance, I've developed a better albeit rudimentary idea of ergo kitting.
This is sort of the core structure I'm looking at: http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/51155609516eaa7b0ba435cf917f7f2d
(https://i.imgur.com/G1cwC45.png)
Majority will be icon legends
(Note Front text legends won't be there, they're just easy to read translations of the Japanese terms)
I've added an additional 1u inner column for increased compatibility, but will leave the legends non-specfic as novelties/mons (they will function like blanks)
I've also duplicated that bot row of gradient keys to have non-specific general Japanese terminology, and added a few extra general Jap term/novelty keys on various rows as well, to accommodate to varying preferences.
I might add some extra 1.5u novelties as well, but I'm unsure which particular rows.
I feel like baking novelties within Ergo kitting to avoid bloating the general novelty kit for the rest of the users.

KITTING Updates
//Lighting in kits improved by Dudeship (and thanks to SGhost) to better reflect the shades of blue

Standard Modifiers (Icon, English Text and Japanese)
- ESC key is R4 (it was always intended, but on the older kit render it was accidentally in R3) [thanks to Hyurin for making us aware].

F-Row (R4) kits:
- added 2 extra keys to account for F13 layout shifting the keys left, thus altering how the colours of certain keys fall under the gradient pattern
- this will also account for 60/65% users/weebs who prefer latin alphas, but wish to use R4 Kanji in place of their arabic numerals on the num-row
- compatibility for compressed F-row layout also remains
//note the Kanji kit is more accurate, the Arabic one is still missing some keys we accidentally forgot to add

Numpad:
- forgot to ensure there is both scooped and barred 5 key options (sorry, we will add on next kit update)

Spanish Alphas:
- Number 2 - secondary legend corrected to " (from @) [thanks to Lexmor]

JIS mods:
- removed iso enter as they are part of all the standard modifiers. n.b. we also have 2u left shift and 1u right shift already in standard modifiers too.

40s/Ortho - Japanese:
- After polls in Discord, the Japanese variant is significantly more popular than the English text modifiers, thus the latter will be replaced by the former
(https://i.imgur.com/5BL3bZo.png)
- Added non-specific Japanese terms as legends to the existing blanks
So:
> med blue blank 1u key -> 凪 (calm (at sea)); this will mirror 時化 (stormy weather (at sea)) that exists
> darkest blue blank 1u key ->  藍 (Ai - indigo); reference to Berlin Blue (ベロリン藍/Berorin-ai) the synthetic blue paint used in wood-block prints such as the Great Wave off Kanagawa
> second darkest blue blank 1u key ->  海 (Umi - ocean)
> second lightest blue blank 1u key -> 水 (Mizu - water)
> lightest blue blank 1u key -> 青 (Ao - blue); I may have ran out of ideas, but this is a set dedicated to the beauty of the many shades of blue, so I'm running with it
> white blank 1u key -> 富嶽(Mount Fuji) [suggestion by Kidviddy, thanks!]; 富嶽  is used instead of more common 富士山 , as the former are the actual characters used in the title of the series of landscape prints the Great Wave off Kanagawa artwork features in (富嶽三十六景 - Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji). This is similar to why 大波 was changed to 大浪

Would 40s/ortho - Icon users prefer the blanks, remain blanks, or have similar adjustments to Japanese terminology like the above?

Render of Ergo kit. Feel free to do a rough edit to do it if you have any kitting improvement suggestions or request some of the novelties changed to another design.
Thanks Parva Ovis and Nopunin10did for the general references/guide to ergo kitting for KAT

OTHER: We have nearly confirmed all our regional vendors, and have spoken to the manufacturer contact re: Group-buy date. We will reveal this soonTM
We are also currently contacting various artisan makers (feel free to DM me on Discord: BobaSweatandTears#1659) for potential collabs. At the minimum, we'll be aiming for at least a metal artisan collab, a Latrialum collab, and a cable collab.

Some new renders by Dudeship have also been added, check out the initial post for other angles:

Really liking the set and deskmats! One thing I noticed - in the Nordic kit, the ˇ~ key is white but it should be purple like the §½ key, as it would be in the same position on EST layouts.

How come some sets like the spanish don't come with the third alt character??
Sets with centred legends such as this one often omit the tertiary (alt gr) legends, as it's difficult to know how to properly lay them out on the key. Sets with left aligned legends often include them, as it leaves room to right align the tertiary legend.

^Nailed it. The alpha legends are all center aligned.  Adding the third alt character in would cause issues with visual consistency/balance.
If the legends were top left aligned (i.e. KAT Napoleonic Spanish kit (https://diplomacyvariants.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/36-alphas-spanish-agustina.png)), then we would have space for the third alt character in the bottom right, but we aren't afforded that room here (https://i.imgur.com/wv1d1Xi.png).

Hi,

Also just wanted to quickly plug the Ikki Aurora 68 (https://ikki68-aurora.com/), a keyboard GB that ends today.

I submitted a few designs inspired by KAT Great Wave novelties (Great Wave, Mt Fuji, and blossom branch) and they made the final round of 13 community badges. The badges will be compatible with future Ikki aurora boards, and are also available now and that GB will continue for a little bit longer. When there is a R2 of Ikki Aurora, rest assured I will resubmit them again if you're unsure about this round of board or badge colours.
They're available  (https://shop.wuquestudio.com/collections/ikki68-badge-gb-round-1/products/ikki68-aurora-community-badges) here in E-white, Dark Gray, Rose Gold and Gold.

Thanks for commenting here on the GH post. It's hard to track all the kitting feedback on the IC form. I'll be matching compatibility to be similarish to KAT Space Dust in some manners.

We have to relook at our kitting numbers as vendors only wish to logistically handle a certain amount. If I can, I'll try, but can't promise.

Some upcoming kit revisions (we'll update the OP with new renders of the kit when we have time, but for the meantime here's just KLE pictures)

We're revising our numpad kits, based on popularity from a small poll today in our discord server about Kanji sublegends (options E, F and 3).

Numpad kit
- removal of R4 delete key (artefact holdover from when we had R5 sculpt)
- addition of scooped 5 homing key
- addition of a light blue arrow key for 100% layout to have a smoother gradient
(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/732108902354780261/832844056048435200/unknown.png)

Spacebar kit - corrected:

Mac Kit
- colours of R2 keys corrected, and also missing dark blue FN 1u key(s) added
(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/732108902354780261/832843679261261844/unknown.png)

Colemak kit
- Inclusion of Backspace keys and a minor legend correction
(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/732108902354780261/832848724341686312/unknown.png)

Nordic kit
- considering if we should include German (thus making it a NORDE kit)

or keep German alphas standalone by itself
(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/732108902354780261/832868992137166848/unknown.png)

South kit - added portuguese compatibility (considering Italian but likely won't add)

On another note, I wanted to plug the Wave deskmat (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=111411.0), which is commencing GB this week (19th April). See sample pic of Ai (藍) [Indigo] colourway:

Beautiful work, OP.  :thumb:
Thanks! Dudeship and I put a lot of time and care into this set.

Kitting changes (currently depicted as KLE) - thanks to Nopunin10did and Kidviddy for their feedback

ALPHAs
- Latin: will retain UK compatibility. Terminal ISO related alphas have been culled.
- The sublegend Alphas have been slimmed down to just cover minimum physical compatibility for non-ANSI users, albeit punctuations will be incorrect for the num-row in particular. Sorry ISO-UK users that are a fan of the sublegend kits, but ISO-UK-JP isn't a real layout in the end, so minimal coverage is the most I'm willing to do. None of the other ISO users who pick the sublegends kit will have 100% accuracy with their punctuation symbols either.
- Katakana mono remains compatible for non-ANSI users
(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/732108902354780261/834463180318048276/unknown.png)

MODIFIERS
- Icons:remains same (no picture)
- Text: The terms 'Great' & 'Wave' remain substitute for the 1.25u OS/Win/Sys/Code key, however due to spacing issues of placing the term 'GREAT' on the 1u keycap, it's been shifted to 1.5u coverage replacement. 1u OS key will use the term 'SYS'
- Japanese: Due to the term 'Control' (コント ロール) taking up two lines, versus the one line Japanese terms for all the other bot row modifiers of Alt, Meta etc. The term for Control has now been replaced by "大浪" (Great Wave) for some visual consistency.

F-ROW
- Largely remain the same
(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/732108902354780261/834463520497729576/unknown.png)
But here's some pics to show gradient compatibility with  F13 layouts, and compressed F-row keyboard layouts:

NUMPAD
- 6 kits now, instead of previous 4. Sublegends polled really well, thus they will be available in all pattern variants.

JIS
- Both latin alphas and mods combined for simplicity sake and also alleviate number of kits given more numpad kits added. Given nil mold for 4.5c spacebar exists for the manufacturer, and 2.75c is in the spacebar kit, only 3c spacebar is retained.

This'll be the first set of real keycaps I'll purchase, I absolutely love it! Deskmats are awesome too, I'll probably throw in a few of those as well.

I'd prefer a full set with German alphas as a standalone.

Really interested in this set and the deskmats!  :thumb:

Does anyone know the usual ETA of KAT sets? I recently got into the mech keyboard hobby.

Thank you!

Show Image
(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/732108902354780261/834463301789417533/unknown.png)

- Japanese: Due to the term 'Control' (コント ロール) taking up two lines, versus the one line Japanese terms for all the other bot row modifiers of Alt, Meta etc. The term for Control has now been replaced by "大浪" (Great Wave) for some visual consistency.
Show Image
(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/732108902354780261/834463365329584128/unknown.png)

F-ROW
- Largely remain the same

But here's some pics to show gradient compatibility with  F13 layouts, and compressed F-row keyboard layouts:

NUMPAD
- 6 kits now, instead of previous 4. Sublegends polled really well, thus they will be available in all pattern variants.

JIS
- Both latin alphas and mods combined for simplicity sake and also alleviate number of kits given more numpad kits added. Given nil mold for 4.5c spacebar exists for the manufacturer, and 2.75c is in the spacebar kit, only 3c spacebar is retained.

Love the new numpad kanji sublegends, having both Western and Kanji numbers together looks so good.

Love that the latin alpha has UK ISO support with it, although I had decided to get the Hiragana sublegends - such a shame it doesn't work out with ISO in Hiragana sublegends, as using the big Enter key with the Dragon from the Novelties to create ISO layout would look so good. I guess I could grab the extra JIS Mods for the 2/@ keys for ISO but might look out of place without Hiragana sublegends on them.

Looking forward to grabbing pretty much the whole kit to create a 96% keyboard with that nice gradient look  ;D Really hoping for a THOK keycap to finish this set off perfectly!

Hey,

this is probably going to be the first keycap set that I'm going to buy. I'm interested in the german set. I noticed that the set is missing some sublegends. I don't know if this was done on purpose or it is a mistake.

Would like to get a reply before I list the sublegends that are missing.

Thank you very much and greetings

Hi, thank you for your interest, please see attached picture of German kit. Please note, the legends in this set are center aligned, so there will only ever be a maximum of 2 legends per keycap due to space.
If the Latin Alphas were top left aligned (instead of top center aligned), then there would be space for a tertiary (third - bottom right) legend. i.e..  http://kbdlayout.info/kbdgr
The legend alignment will be similar to KAT Space Dust's German kit which: https://i.imgur.com/KcwN0Cy.png

Is this gonna have a WS1 kind of white? I’ve got some other KAT sets and I’m wondering if they’d be compatible whites...

Hi ya,
I agree it's slightly confusing, sorry. I will be aiming to update the first post with all the kit revisions in the next fortnight hopefully. Just takes time to render it all out again.
Essentially most of the kits are staying, the most recent KLEs on my last post in this thread are more up to date are just fixing some compatibility and legends errors. I'm in the process of slimming down the ergo and novelties kits to make them a bit more affordable.  The current novelties kit was based off a R5 top row configuration, whereas it's now only R4 profile for top row.

Damn, y’all put some real effort into this set, great work!

Thanks! The white will be the same default white as KAT Alphas, which imo leans a bit closer to WS2, than the creamy WS1

Also going to shamelessly plug the current ongoing Wave deskmat (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=110310.0) groupbuy if you're interested in a blue seigaiha deskmat. This deskmat only groupbuy ends in 4 days time and is priced affordably. Check it out!

In other news, NA Vendor Vala.supply has received prototypes of some of the deskmats from this groupbuy, and I'll post photos as soon as I get them. I've been doing some minor revisions to Ryujin to Ryu (improving fine details and consistency with the waves)

I like your signature! Cheers for supporting the set.

Hi so people were a bit confused with the kitting changes made thus far, and what the final kits look like. Been slowly doublechecking kits, so here is a snapshot of the production vector files. Primarily:

The Novelties kit Ukiyo-E (https://i.imgur.com/L7VlJEv.png) has been rejigged. We removed duplicate keys that were legacy due to original R5 profile (now the top row is only R4).
An additional novelties kit called Seigaiha  (https://i.imgur.com/UY1w2Ca.png)was added.
The Mons  (https://i.imgur.com/u1VjKyk.png)kit had some design changes.
All the alpha keys now come with both 6.25u and 7u spacebars (shifted from the mods). I believe this is a bit friendlier for ortho users who like a big rod.
A 'base' kit (Aizuri-E (https://i.imgur.com/nRJLbwf.png)) has been added for beginners who might be a bit confused with all the kit options. See the final kit at the bottom of the following list. Note the f-row keys in this are not colour gradient compatible with compressed 75% layouts where the f-row keys are non-exploded, or TKLs with F13.
Ergo kit has also been slimmed substantially down to reduce price. I've still kept some novelties, but much less.

A big shout out goes to Oli (of SA Geoma) who suggested a Seigaiha kit and helped clean up some of the novelty vectors for production.

Correct!

No problems

To reduce kit sizes and numbers we haven't made R5 top row.
Having R4 only top row means means we reduce the number of novelty keys a little bit more (as one R4 novelty will cater to both layouts with and without F-Rows).
Having R5, means 1800 layouts need extra nav keys. That makes kitting messier and more expensive.
Furthermore most metal artisan collabs use KAT R4 only for the Esc accent to suit 60/65% layout. I'm sure they can do R5, but 60/65% users would hate using a R5 esc key, and conversely it would look odd if a 75%/100% user had a R4 esc artisan key next to their R5 F-row.

Not that it matters as much here given the Mons and Seigaiha kit coverage, but R4 F-row keys are also much less awkward to use in place of a side macro column (XT-layout) versus R5 keys due to the less aggressive sculpt
R4 keys also can also be readily flexed down to num-row if ppl who use 60%/65% wish to do so for whatever reason (i.e. Kanji for num-row)

Since these protos were made/shipped, I've finally finalised the design of Ryujin (there was some fine detail tweaks to the face that I wanted to improve to increase stylistic consistency) and the original artwork "the Great Wave off Kanagawa" (I couldn't find a high resolution of the existing artwork that worked within the scale of a 900mm x 400mm canvas without distortion) and will try to get protos of these done.
Ryu (the least popular mat based on polls) is still a work in progress atm. I'm not yet totally happy with it.

Im looking to kit a redox keyboard which needs more 1.25u than the ergodox's 1.5u. I know the ergo kit has undergone some changes, but sadly it looks like there aren't enough 1.25u in the correct rows to make it work. Might be too late, but have you considered instead of icon or novelty in the ergo kit, going to blanks for the 'mods' and then having 1.5u and 1.25u support for each row?

Hi there bamblerow!
In regards to the kit in question:

All kits have now received quotes from manufacturer and now bring priced by vendors, thus unlikely to change. Legends, and colours can still be adjusted but not actual keycap sizes and number of keycaps in each kit.
Unfortunately, not being familiar with redox layouts, I found more resources for Ergodox kitting during kit development, thus the Ergo kit was based off those guidelines (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=105714.0).  The 'novelty' and 'japanese character' keys in the ergo kit essentially serve the purpose of 1u blanks and are there for a purpose in the current kit, to provide further coverage to the ergo layouts for which the current icon modifier legends aren't in their ideal position due to the gradient. I'm also personally not the biggest fan of large amounts of blanks in kits.

For the radiance/light colorway, is the light color more of a white or greyish color? The image shown is a white color, but when I click on the image for the magnified view a grey version pops up instead.
It's more very light-gray? I'm not going for bleach white (I think it would be too harsh on the eyes), but will aim to get prototype photo/samples if possible. If you want the CYMK Hexcode value, I can DM you that.

Seems like my eyes are playing tricks on me with the shift between black and white backgrounds lol. I do think that making it a really light gray or a warm white is the move. Too grey and it looks dull, at least to me.

We're currently still aiming for a GB date start for 21st June!
US vendor & CA vendor have submitted their retail pricing, and the other vendors should be following suit with finalising their kit pricing soon, which we hope to reveal over the next few days.
For now, I can say that for:
USA: the base kit will be $99 USD at Vala.Supply
Canada: the base kit will be $126 CAD at DeskHero

THOK x Great Wave artisan collab: $43 USD RRP
Cablemod x Great Wave custom coiled cable collab: $79.90 USD RRP

Zion Studios has jumped on board to be the Philippines regional vendor, and Greenfield as the South Korean regional vendor

There are two images for the Seigaiha novelties kit, which one will be the final? I much prefer the second one.

The raffle for 3 of the sculpts is live right now (ends in less than 3 hours), and the raffle for Porcus and Voidwalker will occur on Saturday!

The 2D image is the goal. The render is currently a work in progress, it's a big tricky to render the wrap of the seigaiha pattern over the front and side faces, but we're giving it another go.

Those deskmats are fire
Thanks! <3

In the new "Berlin Blue" kit, some of the UK ISO keys are the wrong colour, these keys should be the same deep blue of the leftmost keys:

Thanks, we forgot to recolor some of the additional keys for ISO in the alpha kit renders. It's now been rectified (https://i.imgur.com/ElohnSy.jpg).

Minor updates as we start to move towards the GB date start of 21st June 2021.

Current pricing from majority of vendors: Screenshot (https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/781998578499059713/855353054806278154/unknown.png)

Base kit for $99 USD in NA!
Kindly note that though the base kit has F-row, iso and split spacebar support, it doesn't have the extra F row keys for the gradient to suit layouts with F13, or a non-exploded F-Row. Some of the less common shift keys (namely 1u, 1.5u, and 2.0u) are missing compared to the regular mod only kits. Furthermore the ISO compatibility is only generic/terminal, thus if you want correct punctuation legends you won't find it there in that base kit.

We've managed to finally update and improve the kit renders of the Ukiyo and Seigaiha novelty kits.

Ryu deskmat has been updated. As has the original artwork deskmat image. Interestingly, the original artwork interestingly took a lot of time to prepare, as there was nothing online that existed at high enough resolution at the appropriate scale/dimension to fit the 900mm x 400mm canvas (just using the original image led to stretching).
We will do more orders/samples of protos of these mats to make sure they're as good as we can get it. The other mats which we have already received protos for look excellent, so I have lots of confidence in the deskmat manufacturer.

Thank you for consider the spanish speaking community!
No problems!
dang those artkey artisans are sick
I know right? They really outdid themselves.
I'm so in love with all of this. Absolutely nabbing that koi deskmat.
Thank you <3

We're super stoked to have this set reach this stage.
This was the first keycap set Dudeship and I started designing in mid-2020, and we didn't anticipate it would take this long, but nor did we expect it to reach this level of coverage and design. Kitting, novelties, deskmats and renders all took many long nights and many things were learnt (so much kitting...).
These were our humble beginnings: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/iawoah/the_great_wave_off_kanagawa_%E7%A5%9E%E5%A5%88%E5%B7%9D%E6%B2%96%E6%B5%AA%E8%A3%8F_concept_keycap/
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=108136.0

Thanks again to all who have helped given us encouragement, feedback and advice that has shaped the set to where it is today.
Particular shout outs go to Kidviddy (JP translations), Oli (vectors), NoPunin10ded (language kitting), Dr Higsby/Mat (40s kit), Swishy (beginning advice) & Chase (conception).

Stay wavy,
BobaSweatandTears and Dudeship
