FAQ

  • How much will this board cost? - A full base kit will be $350 USD.  Any add-ons such as extra PCBs, or plates will be available at an additional cost.
  • What is the expected lead time? - Expected Ship Date is Q2 2022
  • What is included in the Base kit? - Case in your color choice, Brass and FR4 Plates, Brass Weight, PCB, Rotary Encoder, Rotary Knob in Silver Metal, OLED and additional case hardware.
  • How much does this board weigh? - Fully built just over 5lbs with switches and keycaps.  With GMK Keycaps multiple prototypes weighed in at 5.05lbs or 2290.65g
  • Will this board have RGB? - No.  I wanted this board to be more “elegant” and as such we left RGB off this version.
  • Will Ortho be available? - No. The 1.75U backspace makes this a little more difficult and we don’t plan on this being available at this time.
  • Will there be custom knobs available in the GB? - Yes, they will be $10 USD each and colors are finalized above as they will match the case colors of the boards.
  • What colors will be available? - Jet Black, Ocean Blue, Rose Gold, Forest Green, and Ursula Purple
  • What Plate Options are available? - Brass and FR4 will be the only options during GB.  After the GB ships to the buyers we will post the plate files for you to have other options available to source on your own such as aluminum, copper, etc...
  • What Keycap Compatibility will I need for this? - Any Base + 40’s kit that includes a 1.75U backspace will fit this board.
  • Will there be any limited editions or founders editions? - No.  I hate the idea of falsely inflating supply/demand due to special editions.  The only “Founders Editions” are those that were in the prototype run and they have a small designation on the weight to signify that.
  • What Vendors are you using? - Aeternus Decorum and Prototypist

Thank you for looking at this and I am excited to finally bring this board to reality with all of you!

I had the honor of being invited to a prototype run of this board, and it was nothing short of fantastic! I sent my personal prototype to be built live on stream and the community loved it so much that I submitted it as a giveaway :] Check out the stream. A quick note on the GB runners, they are great community members who have been around for a good while and have ample  experience in the 40% world. They will take care of you for sure. Best luck!

The Indicators LEDs can be used for whatever you want, but I use them for layers or you can use them to signify CAPS, SCROLL, etc...

There will be a guide or at least some of us in the 40's giving animations for the OLED.  It's a little complicated and some of us are using QMK to program them.

And thank you for the support and glad to have you.  What color did you get?

What does "compatible with QMK and Via" mean? Full via support on release, or will we need to load a JSON?

It will have full VIA support on release.  But for the encoder, you will need to upload a QMK Hex file on the board first.

Also, less than 24 hours left, and I appreciate the support from everyone!  Thank you so much for your trust and I can't wait to get boards in your hands.

Update for Today:

1. Covid is wrecking China right now if that wasn't completely known.  Slowing down production in all factories everywhere.
2. Oceanographer is getting things packed up.  Even with the ability to work hampered, they are still packing these boards.
3. I will have an updated ship date and ETA for both Aeternus and Prototypist in the next few weeks.

Appreciate the patience, especially as we decided to sell a board during Covid and world supply chain slowdowns and issues.

This looks very nice I have to say, so cute.
However, I wanted to ask - how do you guys use 40-45% keyboards - I can barely use 60%. So everything else, numbers row, F row, its all hidden in multiple layers? Isn't this a bit of masochism? :)

Hey there!  Yes most of everything is on a layer, however those layers can be set up in a way that makes sense for each individual user.  I find that stretching my fingers on a 60% or larger board to be uncomfortable and I barely move my hands on my 40's for anything related to numbers, symbols, or F row.

I believe you'll find the same from most 40's users when it comes to why they use smaller boards.

Updates are only being posted in discord for some reason.

In short, there are delays are there's no clear date / timeline.

From Oceanographer channel on 40s discord (9 August 2022):

Quote
Oceanographer

- Cases have arrived to Hedgey and have all been QC'd per my specifications.
- PCBs are shipping very soon.
- Remaining hardware is en route.
- Carrying cases: see below.

Aeternus x Ringer Keys Carrying Cases

- Cases are en route to myself and Ringer Keys.
- Cases were completed months ago but due to a miscommunication between myself and the factory, they were not shipped.
- ETA is some time in August, unfortunately as they were shipped via sea freight I don't have strong arrival times until they clear US customs.

Probably because forums are antiquated as hell, and remembering to update this thread with no activity is a task compared to posting in my discord channel in 40’s.  I have a life outside of this forum and keyboards, but anyone who knows me, also knows I have the cases in hand, weights in hand, and I’m waiting on PCBs, and additional hardware, including the carrying cases.  As soon as everything arrives shipping will begin immediately.

Really? So it's the forum's fault that you haven't updated here?

Seriously - nobody cares if you just forgot to update the thread, but playing it off like you're SO busy that you couldn't open a bookmarked link to this thread and copy-paste your discord updates here is just embarrassing. It's 30 seconds of time, and it's a token of respect to people who came across your board on this forum and want to get updates here. The forums weren't "antiquated as hell" when you were advertising your GB here, it's a basic human courtesy to actually provide regular updates here, too.

Latest updates:

Still waiting on any type of answer from Taylor at Aeternus.  I have not heard from him in 1 month now.

Here is what remains to be collected before we can ship:

PCBs
Carry Cases
Rotary Encoders
Aluminum Knobs
OLEDS
Case Screws

If I could I would purchase the Encoders, Knobs, and OLEDS myself.  (I may still do that honestly) Taylor has the funds for all of this and I'm stuck trying to figure out when the hell I can deliver these boards to you.  It's not a good feeling to have them sitting here in my house as cases and weights, but literally nothing else with them at this time.  I'm also recognizing that I may have to take some drastic measures on my own to complete this GB by myself at this point.

I say all this to let you all know I sincerely appreciate your continued patience as I never saw this GB taking a full year to fulfill.  You WILL get your boards.  And if you don't want them anymore and want to immediately sell them I completely understand that as well.  This has not been the process I thought it would be and I sincerely apologize for the continued delays.  Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

I spoke with Taylor late this evening.

PCBs and Carrying Cases - Taylor is finding out the status on these ASAP.  2 of the biggest remaining items for sure and he will work on getting those to me and Jae pronto.

Rotary Encoders, Aluminum Knobs, OLEDs - Taylor is sending me the funds necessary for me to order these and get them to my house ASAP to pack and ready up for shipment with the boards.

Case Screws - Taylor is shipping them to me this week.  He actually had these from me from a long time ago but ended up needing to ship them back to me.

Shipping Boxes - Taylor is sending funds to me for the boxes and I will be ordering these as well.

This helps sort some of the main issues out and can give us a more clear timeline on shipment of the boards ASAP.

Good morning everyone.  No update since the last time I spoke with @Taylor .  However he is supposed to be connecting with me today for further updates on PCBs, Cases, etc...

Sorry I don't have more at the moment, but I know it's been a few weeks since I last updated the group.

Taylor and I did, in fact, speak last night over the phone.  Here is the important parts that you all care about:

Carry Cases - Still in transit over the ocean via shipping container.  Won't know more until they hit the port and we get updated tracking information with timelines

PCBs and FR4 Plates - Taylor has requested and update from the company making them trying to find out if they have officially shipped or not.  Will update more once he knows more.

OLEDs, Encoders, Aluminum Knobs- Taylor should be transferring money directly into my bank account this afternoon.  As soon as it hits I will order all of these parts and get them shipped to me ASAP.  Should be relatively quick as they are all from US based sources.  The only one in question might be the OLEDs which we could get from overseas.

Case Hardware - Taylor grabbed those out of his storage unit and will be shipping those to me this week as well.

That's the update.  Taylor is definitely dealing with some personal items as well as being swamped with work, but he is motivated to finish out the remaining projects for Aeternus so he can take a break for a little while and decide if he wants to come back into Keyboards after that.  He is NOT ghosting and our discussion was almost 1 hour long last night.  He knows there are people who are more than willing to help anywhere we can and I have faith we will get this project wrapped up soon.

Thank you again for your continued patience!

@Oceanographer

Money is in the account and will be available to me tomorrow.  I will be able to order remaining parts and at least take care of that end.

Hopefully update on PCBs soon. Stay patient 😉

@Oceanographer Apologies for the 2nd ping in as many days....

But I ordered the Encoders, metal Knobs, and OLEDS today.

All that's remaining is getting case screws shipped and pcbs and carry cases ETA.

Appreciate it as always, especially around your continued patience!

Thank you so much! Much appreciated.

Well Mexcs covered most of the discord updates.

As it stands today:

Taylor has the carry cases in hand.  Need to figure out best way to ship them to me so I can have them and ready for packaging.  Saw the pictures from Taylor on Saturday night.

Remaining Items for me:

PCBs (Still waiting on what's going on with these)
Case Screws (Taylor should ship when he ships carry cases)
Shipping Boxes (Easily handled once I have carry case measurements)

Jae and I are syncing tomorrow on what else is needed on his end for anyone that ordered from Prototypist.

From Taylor, who runs Aeternus, today.

Quote
Taylor: @everyone

Good afternoon everyone, I will try to keep this brief without failing to address anything.

I haven't returned bearing much good news, but these are announcements that must be made.

Operations

First off, I would like to state that @dededecline, @Dingus, and @austin | ocm will no longer be handling Aeternus operations. I have taken over operations once again thanks to their combined concerted efforts helping me get back on top of things. Please do not attempt to message them for assistance as they will just refer you back to the Aeternus server, or me directly.

Group Buys

Regretfully at this time I no longer have enough funds to fulfill all of the outstanding Aeternus group buys. It is not a small sum, but I plan to inject the necessary money in order to fulfill them all. I don't have a specific timeline on when I will be able to bring all group buys to a close, but I do not intend to abandon them. That has never been my intention.

I will provide as itemized a list as I can of outstanding tasks for all outstanding group buys after making this announcement.

I understand that this is probably very upsetting news for a lot of people, and I will do my best to accommodate any and all participants.

I also understand that some of the group buy updates may differ from the last reported update. Unfortunately a lot of my management was done during a very hectic time and I was mistaken on the obligations that I had provided updates on.

Please review the #updates channel (will be created shortly after this announcement) for an up-to-date status on all group buys and in-stock items.

In-stock Items

Current in-stock item orders will be shipping out as soon as logistically possible. I will provide updates on those shipments as things progress.

Aeternus Server

In an effort to consolidate communication, I will be making all channels read-only with the exception of a couple general-purpose channels. As I understand there will be outstanding questions/comments in these channels, I will do my best to answer them all and refer any members who require further discussion to the new channels.

Future

Given the current reputation of Aeternus, and myself, I don't intend to run any more group buys as an individual. I will be closing out my outstanding obligations and then returning to being simply a member of the hobby. Any projects that I worked on exclusively will be fully open sourced so that replacement parts, or group buys run by another party, can be done more easily. Regarding any projects where I collaborated with other community members, I will attempt to come to an agreement with them on open-sourcing my contributions to said project, or potentially the project as a whole.

Miscellaneous

I want to thank @dededecline, @Dingus, and @austin | ocm for being very helpful in this difficult time and helping me evaluate the situation.

I will do my best to get through my DMs with everyone in a timely manner, and I will be keeping an eye on the Aeternus channels for any questions or comments. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. I will answer your questions to the best of my ability.

From Hedgey, today.

Hedgey - NEHTBA: Okay, here it goes:

@Oceanographer , apologies for the ping earlier this afternoon with no information.  I was actually on mobile when my jaw hit the floor in sheer bewilderment and almost disgusting expectation after Taylor’s message in the Aeternus server.  I wanted to get ahead of the message and let you all know that I saw it, but was rather busy at the time to make a formal announcement on my end.

What happened:

Taylor made the announcement today that he has no money for outstanding GBs or any other projects associated with Aeternus.  This includes Oceanographer.  DeDe, OCM, and Dingus have stepped away again and Taylor has made it clear that he now has to find the money to complete the outstanding GBs, if that even has a chance of happening.

It has also come to light that many of the projects in which money was collected, were never actually ordered.  Including Oceanographer PCBs.  I was lied to repeatedly while Taylor said he ordered PCBs, or they were en route, or some other excuse when he hadn’t done anything at all.  I was strung along and when I confronted him about the money back in October, he said “I have the money, and since it seems like it’s a concern I’ll get to the bank today so it’s deposited.” That was regarding the hardware for Ocean like knobs, Encoders, and OLEDs.

What this means going forward:

The good news is that in some regards I was prepared for dealing with this bull**** if it was actually true.  Evan and I have been communicating behind the scenes with the “In case of emergency, break glass scenario”.  Because I actually have everything physical except the PCBs and FR4 plates, I’m not totally screwed.  I actually only, at a minimum, need the Shopify list of buyers and addresses to get these boards to their respective buyers.

Taylor promised today after his announcement in the Aeternus server, in a separate DM, that he would get me over the PCB files and the Shopify lists tonight.  Unfortunately AS MUCH AS THIS ACTUALLY BENEFITS HIM, I don’t have any faith it will happen.  But I will need to be patient and see if he can get me them as promised.

However, if he can’t get the PCB files over to me, Evan is going to help design a PCB with the layouts for Ocean and we will get these ordered officially and have them shipped directly to me.  I am not quite prepared to spend the money necessary to complete this GB but it has to happen as I have until Mid-March before my 2nd child arrives and I will be out of pocket for a few weeks.  I fully expect to spend close to $8K of my own money to complete a project that was supposed to be something amazing, but that I’ve soured on tremendously as have others.

I’m incredibly sorry to those who have been patiently waiting for this board and it’s a reminder to me, and others that sometimes people can’t be trusted.  Taylor collected almost $90K for Oceanographer and it’s all gone.  IT’S. ALL. ****ING. GONE.

I can promise you this, however.  I am not going anywhere and I WILL see this project to completion.  I have not left, and I will not leave.  I like this hobby too much and I put my hard, hard effort into my first keyboard design. I cannot see it fail.  Hell I haven’t even been able to use my own board because I don’t even have a PCB myself.

I know it’s a lot to ask for you all to continue to trust that this will happen.  Just know that I truly have your best interest at heart.  Know that as much as I can come off as an ******* sometimes, I have not given anyone any reason to doubt that I can pull this off.  It’s going to take a collaborative effort (as it has already) and I am in for the challenge.  A big thank you to @Trashman @BigDan  @mike and anyone else who has helped behind the scenes so far.  Also shout out to @mirari for his guidance as well.

TL;DR - There are no PCBs and the money for the PCBs has been embezzled / lost / mismanaged / spent on cocaine. Hedgey has committed to finding a solution, and had been planning for this eventuality, but it's not going to happen overnight. With some patience, the plan is still full delivery of this GB.

There are more details in the discord and Hedgey's answering lots of questions there if anyone needs more info. But for now, will be a waiting game to see what options are available to help move forward.

To be clear, at the current stage this is mostly happening "to" Hedgey and Jae at Prototypist. They're the ones taking the hit. GB members are simply experiencing yet another delayed GB in a hobby that treats waiting like an Olympic sport.

That said, discord link is here (navigate to Oceanographer channel in 'Post-GB') - https://discord.gg/40percent

Most recent update from the channel (25 Jan) is below.

Hedgey - NEHTBA: @Oceanographer

I just spent time with Jae on a call to outline what's needed and here is where we stand:

1. @Jae | J-04 only if i get minimod  will be handling the organization of ordering PCBs and getting the logistics handled so that we both receive what we need.
2. Jae and his team will be also organizing communications between myself and his team internally to make sure nothing is missed and each group (North America, International) have everything to move on to shipping.
3. Tentative timeline based on LNY and availability of the manufacturers is to aim for Mid-March for PCBs to arrive and start prepping for shipment.  Again this is tentative and pending how fast PCBs are manu'd and other tasks complete.

More information soon, but I know I'm in good hands with Jae, and please make sure you thank him when you get a chance!

There's obviously a lot of drama and acrimony available if you want to go trawling through discord logs. I'd recommend against it - none of it is especially interesting. The bottom line is that Ocean is still on track to be a great board - I think that's the best thing to focus on in the current situation.

I am sad that I haven't been able to deliver sooner, but I think we're in good hands now.

Also thank you for adding updates here.  I legitimately forget to add them and I appreciate the copy/paste you do to keep anyone else informed!

Latest Update:

1. Jae ordered a set of test PCBs to confirm the new schematics work and fit in the oceanographer cases
2. His team will be receiving them soon and I will be sending over a case for them to build/test fit.
3. Once confirmed, Jae will be doing the entire order for all of the PCBs ASAP.
4. I will be going through the Shopify list of customers soon and sending out an email to start confirming new addresses for those that moved as well as anyone who still has the same one.

Apologies for the lengthy delay on getting PCBs, but I agree with Jae's team that getting a test PCB of a new design was the right choice before a full order was committed.  I will have more information soon hopefully.

Thanks!

Does anybody know what the Oceanographer's PCB thickness is i.e. 1.2mm or 1.6mm?

Offline Mecxs

Original GB was run before 1.2mm PCBs were a thing, so would have been designed with 1.6mm.

That said, after Taylor exit scammed the PCBs had to be reordered (and ?redesigned). I assume that no changes to thickness were made. Unless Hedgey or Jae say otherwise I would assume that they stuck with the original plan for 1.6mm.
