Got my Pilot Metropolitans (a fine and a medium) in the mail Monday from Gouletpens. I'm enjoying writing with these... it's getting me back into calligraphy and the art of writing/sketching.

Picked up some sample inks as well that I'm looking forward to trying out.

nice and congrats..............

how is the nib?

Quite smooth. Doesn't feel like it needs to break in. Nibs I've tried are Pilot Metro M and Lamy M and F, and this is at least as smooth as all those.

Ooo TWSBI mini? I was holding out for the 580USA but was seriously considering the mini too. I've decided anything smaller than a medium isn't for me though. XF is crazy @.@

I've kinda developed this small, tight script that causes things like e's, o's, a's, etc. to lose definition if I use anything bigger than a fine. My girlfriend saw this, new I was eyeing a TWSBI mini, and got me the EF. I think I'm going to get a 1.1 stub nib for it as well next time I place an order from Goulet.

Ah, I've had that problem and I'm trying to work on writing larger. Opening up my script has helped me improve my handwriting because it's easier to see my mistakes.

there are times when you need to write small or tight and a f or xf is needed

gotta have the right tools for the right job.

that's why you also need a wider nib or signatures, etc.

i actually have a needle point when needing to go small and am glad i have it-- example when needing to write small on an architectural set of drawings on details off an elevation

speaking of drawings are you wearing glasses yet?

i had 20/20 when i started then had to start wearing glasses because of all the detail scribbish :-\

you would be surprised at how many engineers, architects i have met over the years that are fond of fountain pens or just a decent pen in general

back in the day..............montblanc was the big thing-- gotta have a white topped montblanc

the fountain pens or 149's back then had brass innards, big old gold nibbys and were really nice

to them it was like pulling out their smith and wesson

we actually took notes on pen and paper in meetings back then......................... i guess that has all changed now

speaking of drawings are you wearing glasses yet?

i had 20/20 when i started then had to start wearing glasses because of all the detail scribbish :-\

I've worn glasses for the majority of my life. So I guess I didn't have to start for my job.

you would be surprised at how many engineers, architects i have met over the years that are fond of fountain pens or just a decent pen in general

back in the day..............montblanc was the big thing-- gotta have a white topped montblanc

the fountain pens or 149's back then had brass innards, big old gold nibbys and were really nice

to them it was like pulling out their smith and wesson

The engineers I work with are still picky about nicer writing utensils. But a lot of my friends and I grew up in a generation where fountain pens weren't a thing on the radar. I literally didn't know they were a thing until college. But I was still picky about my writing instruments.

we actually took notes on pen and paper in meetings back then......................... i guess that has all changed now

It's still done where I work. I take *a lot* of notes.

(you can click on the image to see it in flickr)

I had the good fortune to have a Nakaya with me for a while!
This is a Long Piccolo (a model exclusive to Aesthetic Bay, in Singapore) in Aka-tamenuri (red-on-red lacquer) with a rose gold wisteria stopper.

Long story short, my friend accidentally ground off all the tipping on the nib so she had me turn it into a cursive italic (as always).
Unfortunately, there is no more tipping since whatever was left was too little to salvage. But it writes very smoothly.

It's currently one of the pens I plan to get in a few years -- I say years because a pen of this level fetches an awfully high price. This exact pen costs a little over 900 USD! This is because each pen is made by hand; the ebonite hard rubber stocks are put through a lathe, and then the lacquer is applied by hand and cured over a period of 6-8 months.

I'll definitely miss it when I pass it back to my friend this Saturday.

I've been eyeing Nakaya and other lovely Japanese pens (STOP TEMPTING ME PILOT VANISHING POINT RADEN) for a little while. Unfortunately, I've decided that I'm much more into keyboards then pens. This means I set very hard limits on pen prices that I won't move since I can't be snapping up Korean customs *and* limited edition fountain pens :(.

i have a couple of mr. nakaya's pens..............they don't get any better for sure and yes they are not cheap

i am sorry to see the one pictured lost its iridium tip :(

i have not collected pens in a while and to be honest i could not afford to collect both fountain pens and keyboards at the same time

eating i hear is pretty habit forming and since i collected pens years and years ago i am satisfied with what i have and do not feel the need like i do with keyboards (thankfully)

i do have some doubles, so if anybody ever wants to trade keyboard stuff (still looking for a BS clack) for quality fountain pens-- i'm your huckleberry :p

cpt has got my back on that one

Been writing with fountain pens since 2003, I like the dark black color you will never get from a ball point and the feel of writing with fountain pens. Foutain pens are to me in pens what mechanical keyboards are under the KB's.

My daily driver (and I write a lot, research/notes/ideas/math) is the Waterman Expert Deluxe White (Fine):

Nice pen. I'm looking forward to trying out a Waterman again. Dorkvader is going to have one at Keycon :D.

I got bored in class. I was just practicing my handwriting and thought this was a nice example. I feel like I'm starting to level up my skill with the music nib I have.

Edit: also, I've pretty much forgotten how to write in proper cursive... Unless it's my signature. My 8yr old daughter however is infatuated with cursive, I can't believe it's not taught in school anymore. No fountain pen here, my favorite pens are the fatter Sharpie pen in blue.

Cool pens..

but..  isn't struggling merely the essence of all life.. since individual-life merely represent a descriptively isolate system in disequilibrium.

So.. the continuation of life as the measure-of-a-man, would only really indicate how old he is.. as simply-living is all that the-struggle would represent..

I don't really use fountain pens, but here's my print and cursive writing.

This thread has inspired me to get a fun pen.  Does anyone have any suggestions from Art Supply Warehouse that I could get?  It's an awesome local art supply store that I frequent...if mainly because my dad does all of their fliers and business cards and such.

Just got a Lamy Safari, my first FP. Still getting used to it, I got one with a Fine nib, but I think I'd prefer an extra fine, this seems a bit too thick for my writing style.

Also, the Lamy ink that came with it does not impress me (super watery... is that normal?), so I'll be needing to get some bottled stuff soon.

um.. LOL..  fountain pen ink is supposed to be watery,  how the hell else is it going to flow out..

the safari is designed for dye based ink, and generally these will be a bit watery and less brilliant in color.. but overall they're less prone to clogging.

There are pigment based inks, but you need a pen specifically designed for that, otherwise, it'd clog quite often, and you'd have to pull the feed out and brush it..

doing that will wear out the pen more quickly, so it's not recommended on expensive pens.

can't get funner than calligraphy pens. and they come in 4 different nibs. and if you get more than one u can make them fade into different colors.

FUN!

I'm also a Pilot *fiend* and I highly recommend anything Pilot: Parallels like demik said, Metropolitan, and Varsity. I couldn't find them on that website though.

Picture says it all. The erratic style is due to the lack of strength in my hands to write properly.  These pens feel really nice even though my RSI hates handwriting.
