Title: 'Why should I join Geekhack?'
Post by: Michael on Fri, 30 January 2015, 09:55:44
Wanted to hear what people thought, maybe from the perspective of a potential new member coming from reddit or another forum.

So, why should someone be compelled to join Geekhack?

If you have lots of disposable income and don't have a wife who will beat you for buying too much crap.... this is perfect!
Also, it's great if you like posting a bunch of GIFs everywhere while feeling like you will piss off the moderation team and get banned....

To not see Poker 2 (Corsair RGBs, Razer BWs, ...)  posts, to not hear Ripster talk BS all most of the time, and to get away from post like "what is best keyboard?" type of questions!  :))

Because it's were most of the keyboard related items come from or start out I came to geekhack and it was the first on Google when trying to find nyan cat keycaps I think it was photoelectrics board that drew me in, and it turns out geekhack is the birth place of pretty much everything keyboard related came for the nyan cat stayed for the community.

TLDR you are all loveable goofballs :D

It's an interesting community once you make it out of the classified section. I know the meetup I did in Nashville really, really changed my perception of the group that exists here. Meeting Halverson, CPTBadAss, tj... everyone. It was pretty keen.

Anyway, community. It's not reddit where you're basically nameless and hidden behind imgur links.

Well considering I just joined after being a part of /r/mk for a while I can say it's partly because a forum is often a better format for 'enthusiast' communities. Reddit naturally encourages everyone to make a separate post for everything which gets annoying. Forums have better organization for sub-topics which helps for filtering stuff that you do/don't care to see.

(I'm sure there are just as many "i <3 my poker/razer/k70" posts around here, but they're all in one or two threads so everyone else doesn't have to deal with them :P )

I personally don't find it hilarious. I think the joke is in poor taste. He doesn't have a mod account here.

Some people don't find him funny or amusing AT ALL.

You should join geekhack because you want to.  A lot of people (myself included) love the community here.  Perhaps that's reason enough.  But no matter how "great" a community is, not everyone will like it, so maybe it's not for you.  But I can tell you that, without a doubt, I have met more awesome people here than anywhere else on the internet.  Is that not reason enough?

"Q: Where are your keys made?
A: 100% in the U.S.A.  Believe it or not that includes everything! My materials are also 100% made and sourced in the U.S.A as well as my equipment (fabricated and/or sourced)."

When I think of ClickClack, I think of Metallica's lead singer at a show in Oakland, CA wearing a red, white, and blue shirt on that say's "I piss excellence".

For a while before I joined GeekHack, I would search all questions out on Google.  Low and behold every time I found the answer
it seemed to be located here on GH.  So, I joined.  After that, I discovered all the wonderful little things GH has to offer.  GeekHack
seems to take topics further into depth and I love the topic focused threads.  There are many people here who have a ton of
experience, are incredibly friendly, and just seem to want to help. Plus, it seems like all the hard-to-find items that I end up in the
GH classifieds at some point or another, but you have to be quick to grab them. And then of course there are all the people here
who create & sell artisanal keycaps, cases, etc.

And if you play nice, Hoffman may even let you cuddle.

Ageed Hoff.  I joined Geekhack because I wanted to.  A lot of users will never join any kind of forum at all and just do a Google search on everything.  I didn't join another forum.  If people want to join here and participate it's not going to be my telling a user of another forum they should go to Geekhack.  Some join all of them.  I would think it's up to them to decide where they want to go.

I like it here.  That's what matters.  Not what other people think.

That's true demik but as JD said geekhack makes it more accessible for example if sprit and others never joined I personally would not of gone to look for them.

For me as well it's more the fact it was the first place I checked for keycaps which was here but I would say even though we have our quirks I do love it here.

Also going off topic the first thing I looked into before finding geekhack was a post of if I'm correct CLib on DT of his gigabyte keyboard tear down as I was looking to buy one :)

I'll post why I joined GH and why I've stayed even if I still don't get all the sub text and chat to y'all on skype.

I wanted to get a mech keyboard, but going from a £30-40 board to a £120 is quite a jump and so I wanted to make sure I was getting the best value with a good entry level board that would last me.
browsing a forum and seeing what boards people have is a pretty good way to get a half decent general consensus on something, add that to the wiki (least when I was lurking) and it offered invaluable information and feedback.
The reason I stayed is becasue a forum is a community, reddit isn't. The problem with reddit is that everything is based around who shouts the loudest whats the latest meme's. Nothing stays and everything is old within an hour or so. With a forum your able to really get to know the people more and partake in chat and banter without it being a race for karma and upvotes.

This might come of as incredibly sentimental (which is generally not something that I would describe myself as) but, here goes nothing.

I have never, in the entirety of my life, been a social person. I've never made a forum post, never sent or received a PM of any kind. I don't have a ton of friends (I may not have any real friends, if you remove my family members). I have a very hard time "fitting in". I'm not like a monster or anything, but I'm pretty direct, and I'm not shy to express my opinions. To make matters worse, I tend to find social situations extraordinarily difficult, exhausting even. I would likely be defined as a "wall flower" of sorts. I don't engage.

To get a little personal on you here, I had a kid (then another), and I didn't want to pass along my anti-social tenancies to my offspring. There is, shall we say, a certain Magic in Friendship. (I have two young girls.)  ;) So, I decided to put myself out there and join in something. Why I picked this forum was because there is a strong sense of community here. There seemed to be a desire to continue to grow that community. I like keyboards, I work in Information Technology, I am geeky and awkward, and I say what I'm thinking, and for my time lurking, I felt like all of that was completely acceptable.

To expand on that though, I have a strong desire to learn new things. I feel like the community here is so willing to step up and help out each other. I will, one day, build myself a custom board, and I'm sure when I have a question I can come here an ask. The level of knowledge here is second to none, and everyone is so willing to share. The beauty of that, of course, is that I can then take what I have learned and help others. That fosters a great community that will continue to grow.

These are the reasons to join, or at least my reasons. Much love, people, much love.  :-*

GH is one of the most talented and friendliest communities I've been fortunate enough to discover/join. It's extremely humbling/inspiring to see the amount of passion that goes in by everyone. At the same time, a lot of the people I've gotten closer to are bffl material.

Sure there're bumps along the road and the occasional bad apple in the barrel of mostly regular and outstanding apples, but as a whole GH is way more legit than it is illegit.

I was introduced to GH from o2dazone (we work together IRL), and as a noob, it was extremely helpful. And when I first joined, ripster was also very helpful here on GH.
I read through a ton of his wiki stuff, and learned a ton. It was a shame the way everything played out. Ah well.

But bottom line, it's definitely a more inviting place than reddit (for me, personally). That's nothing against reddit, it just feels easier to soak in information here, I think.

Anyways I joined GH back in 2011 for the same reason as most of you guys. I love this community and all the things I learned about keyboards it thought me.

I joined GH pretty much like Lurch. I looked for information about Ducky. The only serious information I found was on GH. Once I received my keyboard, I wanted to post pictures of my board like everyone. And then I got hooked up. Meeting nice people along the way was even better. Seeing so much act of generosity was so nice considering most of us never see each other IRL. We are just gathered around the same interest and it does not stop people to be really nice to each other. What Bunny did for me was the perfect example.

I love you guys!

Well, I initially joined for the keycaps.

The small number of people who have read my thread might know I joined for a different artisan other than CC n BB. Now thats a different story, and I wanna catch em all (I wont lie)... It was only after I joined GH I was more compelled to the hobby of keyboards, looking for a variety of switches/keyboards, custom keycaps and custom sets (wallet-hack?).

While, I do find that there is an "inner circle" of members, in no way I find it to be a closed community as reddit claims. Its inevitable that OG members grouping up due to the fact that they have a history of shared experiences, stories, interests and favors. Some are here for that inner circle, some are here to share their knowledge, some are here to enforce their "master-race" of switch-type/keyboards and some are here to lurk/learn (some only for keycaps). Everyone here has a different purpose, being opinionated one way or another, with varying experiences and knowledge.

Although I am a member in the Korean keyboard communities, my elementary-level of Korean grammar limits me to be active there, just another place to read and learn, taking part in activities that require minimal communication such as photo galleries and trades/group-buys. Plus there are many restrictions there that a lot of members here will not agree with, including myself. I am more active on GH; here I can learn, share and debate about the differing arguments of keyboards (and of course, lose money :p). I feel like thats what a community is, a group of people with different opinions because its not about being right wing or left wing, its about knowing.

On that note, I hope thats "why others should join geekhack", to learn and share experiences.  :thumb:

GH has the most detailed content and opportunity to learn. Reddit & DT are great in ways but don't have the same community/collaborative aspects that GH excels at.

Well, there are more (and more specific) subsections, much more detailed and in-depth keyboard modding, and a higher concentration of cap/board/material vendors/creators.

Additionally, everything is dictated by activity rather than by relative interest/time, which allows for things such as group buys/group projects to flourish, which are long-term.

Wanted to hear what people thought, maybe from the perspective of a potential new member coming from reddit or another forum.

So, why should someone be compelled to join Geekhack?

Gah, I am a a new joiner and my advice would be DON'T JOIN GEEKHACK.

A month ago I was just browsing these forums to try figure out what keyboard to buy. Now I''ve ordered two sets of PBT caps on a group buy, I'm trying o-rings and I'm about to rip my new board apart to do an ErgoClear mod.

So instead of the cost of just a new keyboard, I'm spending 3-4 times that money and who knows how many hours with a soldering iron and looking for tiny springs lost on the floor  :)

And I forsee a good chance that the next step is to decide that I don't even want to stick with MX switches and then try others.

Seriously though, on most of the forums that I frequent, I am at the geekier end of the curve. It's impressive to come into this forum and see people waaay further along the spectrum than I am :)

Great place to forget reality and the very essence that keeps you sane, in most respects  ;) .

This current Gif war between those that support "Taylor Swift and Emma Stone" they really want to post pictures showing Miss Stone wearing a huge black, 12 inch strap, measuring Miss Swift's internal temperature.

A good place to set your mind free and unencumbered by any law or form of prejudice......... enough said.

Honestly, I joined to correct a certain someone's Alps wiki, way back in 2010.

I was going through my parent's barn one day and came across the keyboards I used as a kid in the 80's. Work had slowed down due to the economy (building train simulators for railroads doesn't work well when the railroads get slow), so I brought in a couple of the keyboards that clicked so I could clean them up and try them again.  Googling Alps brought me to the GH wiki, and as I had both blues and whites (and later found greens at my parent's business), I obviously had to compare internals and correct a certain someone.

Back in 2011, this was the only place on the internet that had cool stuff like blank PBT engraved keycaps, so I quickly signed up and ordered two sets from imsto.

Of course, that was way before I found out about GMK doubleshots and what not, it's funny how mainstream mechanical keyboards have gotten.

Well that's another thing too.
Mod's like to do vindictive **** to people that annoy them but they won't take a stance against things like fake clacks or other ****ers that abuse things.
They don't proactively moderate the group buys. They don't stop the drama in gb. They don't issue warnings or ban people who suck and mislead people on classifieds.

Then again half the mods are in high school and college anyways.
They don't clean up any of the sections from garbage and then whine when people post too much on off topic.

yes, i bought the k70 less than three months ago. i was perfectly contented with it and thought it was the best keyboard i've seen... aluminum top, stepped up keys, thick cables, non tramp logo, with just two imperfections: non standard bottom row layout and of course, flimsy keycaps to go with it. i came here to look for advice on where to get a keyset, so i typed corsair k70 on the search box, read the whole thread with corsair dave, saw a few members sporting either an hhkb sig or a title with an hhkb tag on it, searched for hhkb, saw posts about korean custom keyboards and artisan keycaps, kept reading.

fast forward 3 months later, i still haven't bought the said keyset but instead found myself with an hhkb pro2, a duck viper, a poker, a bunch of keysets i haven't even opened yet and now a fetish for anything gmk...

That will build, having all those keyboards is simply NOT enough you need to start acquiring various key-sets to finish their progression towards perfection.

NEVER give up on attaining that very rare commodity known as GMK, BSP and Full contoured SA, those are the current BEST of the best versions for all your keyboards, but don't stop at only buying a few keyboards you must attain true keyboard spirituality and build your collection to at least 300+ then the gods shall bestow upon you, the gift of true tranquility  :) .

How did he move from being well accepted to being such a jerk that nobody like?

He had a tremendous knowledge, along with the time and energy to single-handedly create a huge body of work with loads of great wikis across the keyboard science spectrum. His photos were great, and his explanations were clear and to the point.

He was helpful and patient with me during my first few months here, and I credit him with the foundation of my keyboard knowledge.

At some point, perhaps 3 years ago, he started getting mean-spirited and insulting, and continued spiraling downward into worse and worse behavior until he had pretty much alienated everybody.

I am an old man, and I have seen a lot of ****, but this is one of those rare cases that completely mystifies me.

Whoever wrecked and destroyed and deleted the Geekhack site and structure in June 2013 (or was it June 2012?) is unquestionably a Rat-Bastard Mongrel who eats Satan's **** in Hell, and the general consensus of the rumor mill seems to be that it was he.

Same here there was never any concrete evidence that you could present in court proving 100% he was the one responsible for destroying Geekhack back then.  Everyone got on the steam train blaming him for the devastation without gathering any facts and sorting away any confirmation from rampant innuendo.

Just surprised everyone seemed to know here on this forum who the infiltrator was when even the CIA find it hard to track any hard core web attackers.  They currently can only track countries as being the one's responsible for some damage on sites situated around the US.

Never, ever trust rumour mills and what someone else says because it helps muddy the waters on who actually committed the crime against Geekhack.  Not saying I'm a Ripster supporter in any way BUT to say he is so cunning as to bring down an entire website on his own is like comparing George Bush to Terence Tao  ::) .

when even the CIA find it hard to track any hard core web attackers.
They currently can only track countries as being the one's responsible for some damage on sites situated around the US.

BUT to say he is so cunning as to bring down an entire website on his own is like comparing George Bush to Terence Tao.

I would be very surprised if the CIA was proven to be as inept as they like for people to think.
There is no strategic advantage to showing your full hand before the game is over. That said, the US likely has far stricter "rules of engagement" than most 3rd-world countries, so our agencies probably do work under a handicap.

My understanding was that the-one-too-often-named is a highly intelligent, highly-trained, retired computer engineer who was enmeshed in the highest levels of the Geekhack structure since its early days. I assumed that whatever he did was well within his capabilities.

I'll give you the other side of the question.

The reason I joined Geekhack, is due to the sheer amount of knowledge. I'll admit, I came from Reddit in the fall of 2013. The majority of posts on r/Mk referenced this site, to the point where I felt I need to come to the source of it all. Why get second hand information, when I can get it from the people who know the most? I've also found out how easy it is to spend money.

Also, it's great if you like posting a bunch of GIFs everywhere while feeling like you will piss off the moderation team and get banned....

That's why we need to stop the blind hate towards /r/mk.

Each hobby has his entry point and begginer mistakes. We just need to help redditors that want to go further Corsair/Ducky Shine/Razers ...
Lot of people will be more than ok with just a gaming branded board just like they would be pleased with their Dr.Beats.

I'd repeat my words and say we should share the GH content to reddit to show them there's thing to do besides changing caps and spray painting.
And if we do it without linking to GH, but rather build a reddit post, it would be even better.
Title: Re: 'Why should I join Geekhack?'
Post by: fohat.digs on Mon, 02 February 2015, 08:52:59
we should share the GH content to reddit to show them

I would rather consolidate the information than dilute it.

Never having delved into the reddit thing, on principle, I don't know what is there, but between Geekhack and Deskthority there is plenty of information and discussion going on.

Posting something on reddit to point people in this direction would be helpful to them, but shunting chunks of this forum "off-site" would likely weaken it and ensuing conversations conducted "over there" would be lost to readers of this forum.

"Turf wars" are usually silly and detract from the underlying subject. I say let it be, and people will find the right place for themselves.

And there is is the old maxim: "There is no such thing as bad advertising" which is probably at work as well.

You also need to share the banning privileges.  You would definitely ban everyone and way too quick.  Gotta go easy or we'll run out of people to ban.  It's this lack of self-restraint that has kept you from being moderator of the universe.

I think im literally going insane, going on 3 years working overnights and im starting to lose my mind. I find myself talking to myself more and more. I ramble on about dull unimportant things whenever i see people that usually turns into something extreme and unfiltered. I casually curse in public and often fantasize about how bad i could ruin someones day by just walking up to them and punching them in the jaw. Im growing out of touch with reality and falling into a make believe fail safe that everything is going fine and will work out in the end. Im losing touch with people around me and am becoming more so a recluse. I rarely leave my house and drift off into day dreams while driving. The days roll weeks and them into months, im losing grasp of the concept of time and feel i may be mentally challenged but no one has the heart to tell me. Im not crazy but the world seems crazy to me. I do things to the extreme, there is no half assing or cheaping out when it comes to problems. Im lost in my own head

I originally joined Geekhack because I thought I thought there was a members-only shop in here for buying Bro Bots and Click Clacks lol.  I  am dum. :'( I still stick around to lurk and see cool custom keyboards though.

(I just realized I'll be 1 year old next month!  :thumb:)

My initial introductory post was met with some welcomes, the information I've received regarding keyboards has been good and the  place just seemed quite relaxed. Something I felt was missing was a wiki and feel the community here could build one in no time if the keys would be handed over. Also group buys here are the group buys.

Because, let's face it: If you're going to spend hours every day sitting and typing on a keyboard, you may as well use that time discussing keyboards—using the very keyboards you're using to discuss the the keyboards. Because if you didn't have keyboards, you wouldn't discuss them (using the keyboards). Fortunately, though, you do have keyboards, so you can use these keyboards to discuss, and this should be obvious by now: keyboards. This causes an endless cosmic loop that creates a wormhole that transports you to a place with free beer.

I joined geekhack for the sole purpose of trolling. My first few posts just consisted of me harassing Edgar Matias as a RedditArmie character (I was really into the RedditArmie thing). I still feel bad about it.

The funny thing is, I kept posting and asking people questions about keyboards, and everyone was very helpful. Even the people who were most critical of my troll act (e.g. jacobolus) spent a lot of time later answering my questions. That drew me in.

I think this is one of the few true online communities out there. I mean people really go out of their way to contribute. Hell, there's an entire thread just for giving stuff away, and it has over 4,000 posts. You don't see that on Reddit :)

EDIT: Oh, and ****ing case in point (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=75112.0;topicseen).

Wait wait wait. You mean you actually set out to troll? Like not, "I'm going to voice my disagreement," but instead, "I'm going to make stuff up just to annoy these people" ??? I've got to know, why?

I remember when your sig was a quote from someone explaining why they were adding you to their ignore list, and I was kind of annoyed at you for wearing it like a badge of honor. But I've seen you come around and offer a lot of stuff in the free stuff thread, which was cool. So at any rate, glad to see that you came to your senses.

BTW, who was it that ignored you? Have you made amends?

I thought it was really funny to make people mad about something silly. But the more I explored the site the more I realized that this was a pretty altruistic community and that annoying strangers for fun is about as childish as it gets.

Jacobolus and litster blocked me. Jacobolus later unblocked me and was actually very helpful at helping me get into the hobby; he answered a lot of my questions. IDK if litster still has me blocked but he hasn't responded in 6 months. I've never formally apologized to them, though I'm thinking I should.

From an old redditor to someone fairly newer to GH (lurked for months, been a member for 2 now) the sense of community here is unparalleled. People here are friendly, I've never once questioned the legitimacy of anyones classifieds. People aren't here to make a profit, most everyone is of like mind- it's like a neighborhood from the 50's except we're from all over the world and live on a keyboard.

There are great people on /r/mk and I love that place, but there just are not threads that stay alive or history like this place has. I've learned SO much from peoples tutorials or PMs, I've made skype friends in Scandanavia, I've had people offer to send me stuff I was looking for just out of generosity. It really is an amazing place (plus it has style- you don't realize until you come from a place like reddit how much FLAVOR having avatars adds to people's personalities, am I right??

Honestly I only started looking at building a keyboard after seeing an image from @keyclacker on instagram.  I started looking around for information on building your own keyboard just to see what people were doing.  I originally ended up over at Deskthority, mainly because of my generic questions and their wiki system.  Once realizing that they are mainly EU based I came here.  I like reddit as a classifieds system and do most of my BST over there (also haven't been here long enough for the GH BST subforum), but I like a forum layout more for community style things.  It is what I am used to.  Plus the making stuff together subforum is what's up.  It is generally where I end up hanging out on most community forums I join.  I think its really cool the amount of people here actually making stuff.  I mean hell, making molds and pouring keycaps is super cool, but the fact that there is more than just a couple people doing it is amazing.

Once I got used to digging through 35pg long forum posts, things got easier.  Most the time, the top post has all the info I was looking for.  ;)

Wanted to hear what people thought, maybe from the perspective of a potential new member coming from reddit or another forum.

So, why should someone be compelled to join Geekhack?

Well you can meet some very funny. knowelgeable folks on here (and not just single geeks - but it helps! what with obsessive and hobbies that are a bit time-consuming etc) that leave me for dead and I`ve been observed as eccentric on occassion, oh my God I`m getting worse - I just turned 50 and I was as mad as a box of frogs in the seventies!

Btw I work self-employed and burn the candle at both ends and soon I might need some extra strong Columbian coffee extract LOL to keep up with the 20 odd year old fly-boys haha

If you're coming from reddit (as I did) you should join Geekhack to fully expose yourself to the keyboard community (if you're into that kind of stuff). Sorry to be pedantic but it`s a quarter to four in the morn and I`ve been drinking as people do on Saturday Nights/Sunday mornings - I`m well north of Greenwich (Manchester UK) but grammatically speaking in similes is from the same latin root as similar.

"a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g. as brave as a lion )."

I use Euphemisms far to often and also self deprecating humour "comes in handy" which is both a synonym and figure of speech also it is a truism.

No seriously Im not English or American or Eastern European - I`m a mixture -  Haha - "just because it was born in a stable it doesn`t mean that it`s a horse" haha

My location is the Roman (Latin) spelling of Manchester UK and I can tell you`re an American from the Northern 50 straight away (only kidding)

Why do you just talk in ****ing hilarious similes all the time

Too late Snowdog993 - how to do surgery on an old 1391401 - (of course I needed a slim body long 5.5mm) - The American version `cos it was too mucky - it lived in a bus garage for 25 years and it ended up black from beige! After a jolly good solvent scrub and dry-out it was working like new - even though the case and key caps were stained with sooty diesel fumes - the office tea-lady cum right-hand man wouldn`t part with it.

I wish I had a camera on me - you would have died laughing and alas I moved hundreds of miles away from the garage and lost contact.

Although I did not come from reddit, this is more or less why I'm here, I plan to branch out further but as someone who is rather quiet online, baby steps..

That said I'm very focused on the acoustics of keyboards these days, so I'd love to contribute in regards to that.

Plus it's a pretty comfy place.

Found my way here through r/mk years ago.  Couldn't be happier to be here instead.  Ripster fosters a very one-sided irrational hate fest over there, although it's generally disputed once he says something.  Mostly though, I really enjoy the people here and I love the way the forum format allows for ongoing discussions and group buys.  It allows for real conversation instead of the same set of questions asked over and over again.

/r/mk does not = ripster though. I think that's a bit disingenuous to the folks over there that do provide interesting discussions and content to look at the two as one in that same. I do agree thought that the depth of conversation can and does go quite a bit deeper, reddit, by nature is prone to shallower and repetitive discussion.

I agree with that. I didn't mean to make it seem as though ripster was the only aspect of r/mk. And he does post interesting content occasionally as well! But he is the creator of the sub and he does seem to pop into a majority of posts over there and I find his attitude can grate on my nerves a bit. But there are a lot of good posters over there as well.

GH is the most friendly and responsive community I've ever come across. Plus, if you are into kb's or you want to get into them, GH is the right place. Deskthority also has a forum, but for me deskthority is more a wiki than a forum.

And since its not reddit or imgur people don't bat an eye when they walk by and see it on the screen.

They just think its some programming forum that I always look at to answer programming questions.

Thank-you geek hack for filling in the gaps on those boring days.

Also better than 9gag at the office. Obviously comparing GH to 9gag is like comparing apples with oranges, but my point is that GH is far more interesting to check at work at intermediate intervals than 9gag. 9gag becomes boring more of the same same very quickly when you check it often.

Also, of all the expensive hobbies I've adopted, this one has the better community by MILES.

Well, coming from someone who lurks that other website... Mostly because I'm pretty tired of seeing the same ****ing keyboards over and over again, with a bunch of RGB lights. Not like any of the communities are really better or worse than each other, they both have trashy people and toxic culture sometimes, but every keyboard community has something to offer. For me, Geekhack has a lot more knowledge, potential, and skilled people here. Kinda makes it hard for a scrub like me to contribute. I use that other website cause it's pretty quick and is a little bit easier to navigate (No 100+ page threads there) but it's pretty lackluster in comparison to raw material here.

I joined mostly because this place seemed to fit me best.
I've been on reddit for a while and that's initially how I found out about geekhack, but I've already posted more here than I have on /r/mk.
It could have something to do with being a kid in the '90s - all I did back then was chat and post on all kinds of forums like this one.

I lurked both places and this just seemed like the best fit for me, personally.

Other people should join because they feel like they would also belong here, and then make a go of it.

What do you mean "join"? Do we have to actually take a pledge, wear a special tie, submit a credit card number, etc.? Or do you mean just come here and post regularly?

At the time this was the only keyboard community that I knew off.  And reddit was not in my cross hairs (still isn't).  Back in 2010 there wasn't much out there.  And in comparison with the GH community, there still isn't.

So, why should someone be compelled to join Geekhack?

Mostly because of Tp.

Or maybe because of the fact that we don't attack people for not using the search button as often as people of reddit do.

Maybe people are asking questions because they want to start a conversation or discussion not just get the answer; something reddit never thinks. Reddit is designed poorly for that though. GH is easier to keep track of updates and statuses of all your favorite artisans and group-buys :D

I know this is where the history is and this is where you'll find a "fuller" experience in regards to the greater keyboards commune.

So what I'd really like to know—and I think of this each time I see this topic—is, what's this "joining" thing the OP refers to? Do you have to actually join something here (i.e. send money, receive a special badge, whatever)? All I do is log in, read stuff, and post stuff. Am I missing out on an immense hidden members-only area for real keebheads?

Of course it may be one of those things where if you have to ask, it means no one's invited you because you're the kind of person who asks about this stuff, and who wants peeps like that hanging around? Let's face it, you can't win. Still, I'm wondering.

Definition 4?

To join - to become a member of [Geekhack], by creating an account and signing in.

In the context of the first post, this is in contradistinction to joining (becoming a member of) other online keyboard/technology-related forums.

So I can give myself more reasons and excuses to drain my bank account and talk about peripherals with people who actually understand how important they are.

Also, I kinda like the vibe here the best. I post on the Reddit board sometimes, but I like the smaller community feel and atmosphere so far. I tried posting on a Discord room just about mechanical keyboards, but I prefer to talk about KBs and tech stuff on Geekhack, Reddit, and in YouTube comments really.

I came over here from r/mk. At first I just wanted to be more aware of interest checks and group buys, but I'm learning to appreciate the community over here. I like that a conversation can take place over time compared to the day long string of comments on reddit.

It has also helped me to actually try to contribute. Without the pressure of meaningless internet points I feel much more comfortable sharing.

Yeah, i generally enjoy GH more than something like r/mk and it's fast-paced posts and short-term discussion. GH is a place where you can learn, contribute and educate each other while still being active on following stuff like ICs and GBs.

Totally agree.  Each individual community offers its own unique benefits and drawbacks, and some feel more likely to foster community than others.  The continuing discussion and lack of downvotes here appeal greatly to me.  But like many others, I started on r/mk too, and visit daily.

I joined about 10 years ago and this is the post I remember best. I don't know if this is well known here, but if I recall correctly, people thought the red Cherry doubleshot escape key was super rare and were willing to spend a boatload of money on them. Then elitekeyboards found a bunch of them and sold them for like $5 on their site. It was kinda hilarious.

The forum is quite helping. You post stuff that's irritating you and you get answers immediately.
