giodanos is awesome!
-
So, you are looking for a TKL with Cherry MX Whites, with SP SA-profile keycaps, right?
And a AT Model F.
Two keyboards that dante can live with. :)
-
Vintage Blacks are fantastic. Why did Cherry ruin this switch!?
the placebo is strong.
unless the board has been heavily used and springs broken in.. there is almost no noticeable difference between "vintage" and new.
especially when you change the spring as many people have. this is geekhack's biggest placebo.
-
- 55g Realforce feels good
- 62g MX Clear feels better than the 65g I have on my QFR
- people in the community are very talented
- Dolch keycaps look just as good as I thought
-
I learned:
I don't like linear switches or heavy springs
I like the feel of thick ABS doubleshots better than thick PBT
stock blues or browns are my preference
-
I learned:
I WANTED TO BE THERE!
-
I don't understand how 55g Topre is considered 'heavy.' The 55g is a great typing keyboard but I wish it were heavier still...
If you use them for several hours every day for a few months, your fingers will start to complain. Where as on a lighter keyboard they wouldn't. At least, that is my experience from using variable-force Topre vs. Cherry keyboards at work.

There are those who have tried New-In-Box vintage keyboards that do say that these feel better
than new keyboards.
Broken-in switches are smoother than new switches, though.

The placebo makes you THINK you feel some type of way.
-
Oh and there is a difference between gold and silver springs....and a slight difference between vintage and modern blacks. Gold springs are a bit taller and feel heavier. Vintage switches feel a touch lighter and smoother. But its VERY hard to tell when the caps on. Not sure if its worth hunting down vintage blacks but there is a difference. Lubing really makes it linear switches feel nice though hehe.

HoffmanMyster is tall
Sifo is not

but are these people that have heard all the hype behind "vintage blacks"?
you need somebody that has never heard of this to try out both.
it seems like it's a GH must to like "vintage blacks"

I have some normal and vintage blacks (and all common switches) on their way to a friend of mine who has never used a mech keyboard. They are mounted on a cardboard "plate". Will report back, might take a week or so. Also, the difference is not only feelable, it is also audible. I'll make a short video comparison tomorrow.
-
regardless of whether vintage blacks are amazing, lubed blacks are nearly the perfect switch. and this is from a devout lover factory greens
-
Other things I learned in terms of keyboards:
- Lubed blacks are incredible
- People really like my KMAC, that makes me really happy :D
- Wcass has THE COOLEST COLLECTION OF MODDED MODEL Ms stuff ever. 60%, modded ANSI XT, cutdown M122?
- Rkinze's R4 SA caps are my new obsession
- jcrouse? craziest collection I've ever seen in terms of Clacks and boards. Hands down the most mindblowingly awesome collection I've seen. 456GT, LZ-SE, Phantom with Litster cases, KMAC Happy...the list goes on and on
- GON and Kaliet have those aluminum-polycarbonate-aluminum cases? Really incredible craftsmanship.
- Qsenn DT-35? Best rubber dome ever. No joke, no troll. I really love that board. Plus I can write "Sifo" in keycaps.
- Beast does really awesome woodworking. If you didn't get that impression before, his stuff is really really nice.
- Grease modded and floss modded Model M's are sweeeeeet.
- LZs are really nice boards. The construction is great and they get a lot of little details right. The angle of the bar, the fact that you can change the bottom plate, the feeling of a plate; all feel great.
- Project Praiano aka the TechKeys Business Card/Controller is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. I LOVE it and I threw money at i3oilermaker very quickly.
-
I really need to get me some SA caps, we should have a GB soon.

They have one, something like Commando set.

I learned that all it took for my wife to want a much board was to min some caps. We already have a layout and switches figured out. She is going for 75% with dedicated arrow keys and either stock reds or the reds with the unknown light springs that are in the round 2 switch tester from CPTBadass.

Hehehe, you're welcome Melvang! :P

Yup, I'm your guide Mama_Fry. :D
What can I help you with ma'am?

Welcome to our wonderful community!
I believe glissant's wife made smallfry's avatar, we can ask her to make you one :)

Mama
Very good to see you hear ma'am.

I learned that grown men, including myself, still find "wood" jokes entirely too funny.
-
you wood think we'd all be grown ups, right?
-
I learned that grown men, including myself, still find "wood" jokes entirely too funny.
Sometimes I think they're kind of hard to take.
-
I also learned that Papa_Fry should create an account here at least for the purpose of answering technical electronics issues. I know he helped me out with deciphering some scavanged parts that I am going to try and integrate into my next build.
-
Things I learned:
-Mashby is a presentation wiz.
-mkawa knows everything
-custom keyboard products are the intersection of art and technology
-Chicagoans have better style than other Midwest cities
-Korean customs are HEAVY, especially jcrouse's 456 GT.
-there is a shortage of Alps enthusiasts. We need to address this.
-Binge makes great custom caps
-the new Techkeys business card is the best business card ever and could be the only business card the client must pay for
-we aren't all single guys in our mother's basement
-UIC's architecture is not very aesthetically pleasing
-keyboards attract an interesting variety of individuals
-The Beast is doing some great things with wood
-Sifo lives up to the legend
-the only Cherry switches I like are mounted on super heavy Korean customs
-the Model F might have the best key feel of them all
-looks like I need to get a Topre, probably HHKB or even the microTron
-Clacks!
-Not all Canadians have accents
-I want to live in Minnesota/Wisconsin solely so I can be immersed in the accent
-Wcass might have the greatest collection of custom buckling springs on the planet
-I like Chicago style pizza
Congrats if you read through my long list!
-
I learned that Sifo is pronounced s-eye-fo, not sea-fo :(
-
...
-we aren't all single guys in our mother's basement
...
Yup... married and 2 kids, but my domain is indeed the basement. It's all mine though! LOL
-
-I want to live in Minnesota/Wisconsin solely so I can be immersed in the accent
Which one of us convinced you to come up to WI/MN? There weren't too many of us there.
-
I learned:
I am a shadow
That pvthardlybadass is new, at fault for errthing and always wrong
I like model f switches
I like hhkb feels
That halverson is neither a girl nor shark, isn't a wizard either and might not be a bro. Also, is wrong and at fault for all as well.
That everyone is alright to be around
That Ming should be getting a phd in chem engineering
That sifo is indeed legendary
That I have a core group of close friends thanks to gh
That I can, in fact backed with picture and soon to be website proof, eat a tomato/mozzarella salad, truffle steak fries, a 3 lb(48oz) steak and still contemplate dessert
That I'm rude, not the tallest, but probably the largest/girthiest
That I still want expensive keyboards, even after selling everything and getting a qfr
That I got a good hotel rate and plane fare less than 24hrs before I needed them
That I can pass for hashbaz
That I don't like hotel beds
That should be it for now
-
I'll make a short video comparison tomorrow.
Video is up, I think at 0:16 you can hear it best.
-
you wood think we'd all be grown ups, right?
smallfry, who loved puns, would say, "I see what you did there".
-
That Ming should be getting a phd in chem engineering
Nooo, that's my thing! :P Although Kawa would do splendidly as a chem engineer. :thumb:
That I can, in fact backed with picture and soon to be website proof, eat a tomato/mozzarella salad, truffle steak fries, a 3 lb(48oz) steak and still contemplate dessert
A donut sandwich, no less! That dessert was insane!

No, that was a different time. I had an incredibly small dinner in comparison at three aces

Yes. Had I actually read the things you listed I would have been able to figure that out. :-X

But still, that donut dessert thing was seriously crazy.

Which one of us convinced you to come up to WI/MN? There weren't too many of us there.
Oh it's more from the four or five trips that I have taken to Minnesota and Wisconsin, and my propensity to take up the accent when I am there for a couple days. And all the lakes and rivers.

Yay! I'm pro-WI. :) Make sure you let me know if you're visiting, I'll take you out for some drinks. If you want - I won't force you.
We do talk real nice, so I can't blame ya.

Just finally got in the air 2 hours late

I learnt the same as many other have mentioned. People do not look like you think they do.
The_Beast did not look like a lumberjack
mkawa did not look like a younger Mr. Miyagi
CptBadass did not look like a character from M.A.S.H
Neither did mashby
Americans from the southern states do not look like cowboys
I may suffer from stereotypical preconceptions. No offense.
Binge and sifo were not that far off.

Could you explain the WI/MN?
-
Could you explain the WI/MN?
You mean my location? Sure. I am from southeast WI, go to school in MN, and am currently living in east central WI. I was living in WI last fall, MN this past spring, WI this summer, and MN this fall. For simplicity, I opted to just say I live in both states.
I also wanted to make it known that I basically live in both states for meetup purposes or anything of that sort. Someone in MN might otherwise be hesitant to ask someone from WI to help out with something, but since I have an apartment in MN I could easily and quickly travel there even when I live in WI.
Hope that answers your question. :)
So...according to your fascination with MN/WI accents, we should be best friends since I live in both. :P

It's so very awesome that this stuck.
Also, halverson got all his carafe drinking judgement out on me when I drank from one earlier.

You guys don't even know. Sparkle Barbie skilled it when she picked out an amazing place to have brunch...and indulged my obsession with ice cream. I tend to remember people based on food experiences more than keyboard experiences :P. Welcome to GeekHack!
