Title: Tried my hand at vinyl wrapping my QFR
Post by: kroms on Fri, 12 February 2016, 21:16:18
Used turquoise vinyl to match my Miami key set.
Loved the way it turned out for how quickly I went over it.  I might re-do it to perfect some of the internal edges and the corners.

Welcome to Geekhack!

That looks great!  Can't see any gaps or creases or anything!

Fantastic match for the keyset too :)

Did it take you long to do?

Thanks! Finally took the time to register.

Thank you.  I wasn't sure if it would match based on the pictures on amazon, but I took a chance and it turned out pretty good!
I tried really hard to get a few creases out. The vinyl was giving me a tough time staying straight and not folding on itself. There's some defects on the inside of the key holes, but they are hard to notice.

It took me about 45 minutes to do.  I took the vinyl, pulled the backing off and stuck the case face down and worked my way from there folding the outer sides on.  Honestly, this was the most difficult part.  There's some folds around the corners, but they don't look as bad as I expected.

Did you sand the rubber coating off the case first?

Nope. No sanding.  I didn't even clean it. Although I've only owned it for about a week so it was very clean.

Fair enough!

Be interesting to see whether the wrap unsticks at some stage.  My QFR and QFS tend to soak up oil from my fingers around the arrow cluster and just below the function keys where I tend to rest my fingers when I'm thinking.

Looks metallic even. That is a VERY unique board you got there, really nice color combo. Really pops.

Looks a bit like this to me (color desktop on GEM / Atari):
