also will the screws on the higher side have those really annoying long holes that get in the way?
red pcb is classic
Yep, gonna have to add these to my Noxary collection. Red PCB would be cool.
Yup
Sure

$%#@ me! I like it so much I think I'll try to get into this GB too. Take it easy on my wallet mate!
Interesting, will the limited editions have different weight cut outs/serial numbers like the 268?
What configuration of materials does the stated 2.4kg weight refer to? All aluminum? With brass options?
I’m worried that limiting the cerakote run to 30 might be too few to meet demand!

You do understand what the point of running a special limited edition is right? :P
Also, if its like 268 ag, its not 30 cerakote, its 30 custom colors and then a smaller cap on cerakote as he has to take them and get them finished himself.
He wants it limited on purpose, not because he is unaware of demand.

Sorry I'm still pretty new here. So in a case like this, would there be a lottery when demand outstrips supply? Or just FCFS?

Everything will be FCFS for this since I think there are plenty to go around over the two versions :p
I'll be doing a limited version of 30 because 1) keeps the custom stuff smaller, and easier; 2) I like limited stuff; 3) makes them even more special ;D

An optimistic, yet poor one.
I know you don't like diffusers, but is there any chance we can get one?
I place the port cutout on the bottom piece, so any extension would mean the port wouldn't fit.
My greatest intention is to make the typing plane as low as possible, so adding anything unnecessary undermines the months of work I put into getting as low as possible.
A diffuser would be an afterthought and not fit with my vision, so I won't be having one. :)

Is this bundle only or can you purchase the TKL without the numpad?
Do I need to buy the numpad as well for the special edition?
Oh, I though it was 30 limited 280s in custom colours and some more 280s in standard colours? Is this bundle only or can you purchase the TKL without the numpad?Do I need to buy the numpad as well for the special edition?
Sorry I missed these, it'll probably go as follows:
30 limited 280s and 30 limited 220s.
Anyone getting a 280 has first priority to get the matching 220 number.
Any left over limited 220s will then go to any non-limited 280 buyers.
If there are still limited 220s left, will be available as just the pad.
If all 30 220s sell out, I'll do non-limited, but doubt it :))

And the last questions: can we anodize the top and bottom of the case different colors, and will the brass be pvd coated?
Of course, and nope, brass will be media blasted. I don't like the aesthetic of PVD.

tarnishing feelsbadman
would a lacquer be a good idea?
Ah good, think I'll get one limited or not :)
What does "media blasted" brass look like ( shiny or matte finish )? Does it tarnish? Is it easy/hard to clean?

will both versions have the number engraved (limited vs normal colors) and will the limited one be more expensive? Still debating if I want a 60% or a really nice TKL for my money... it looks really nice!
if the price for the limited ones isnt much higher, put me down for one of those, not sure about the color yet. (only 280, not the budget for both)

Matte finish, so identical to the weights basically. It does tarnish, and I haven't tried cleaning because I like it :pShow Image(https://i.imgur.com/nRCPy5p.jpg)tarnishing feelsbadman

No, just limited. And no, price will be the same (unless cerakoting). Thanks :D
Holy **** that is a sexy looking weight. Will we need to pick exact anodization/cerakote colors when we fill out the FCFS form or will we have time to choose?

I let everyone confirm their anodizing choice later, and cerakoting can be changed until I get the parts in.

there are only four options
stoplight red (https://www.cerakoteguncoatings.com/finishes/C-143Q/stoplight-red/)
S&W red (https://www.cerakoteguncoatings.com/finishes/H-216Q/smith-wesson-red/)
crimson (https://www.cerakoteguncoatings.com/finishes/H-221Q/crimson/)
USMC red (https://www.cerakoteguncoatings.com/finishes/H-167Q/usmc-red/)
you can order up to 5 swatches, free in US, not sure about globally

Really? How do I order swatches?
Are there swatches for anodization too, or do I just provide a pantone code?
Going to put up a form later and see where the interest lies. I’ve only seen people comment for the limited 280, so it’s kind of worrying that all the demand lies in 30 boards as I was planning to produce a lot more. It'd perhaps be wise to open up the cerakoting / custom color option to some more folks, as therein lies quite a lot of the interest.
I am still very thankful that so many are interested :D

I ordered some swatches and it was still free to Canada. Will probably take a good while to arrive though since the sender has “gun” in their name.
Can someone please explain the difference in finish between cerakoting and anodising, is it like rough matt vs shiny metallic or more subtle than that?

I might join this, but I might require time to decide. Things are moving too quickly for me, both in expenses and in timing relative to real-life circumstances.
Best of luck and thanks for your diligence, xondat.

pros: pretty durable, a few nice finish options, there's an anodizers guild with tons of info about it, can be done in your backyard if you're really curious
cons: limited color options, no two batches are exactly the same color, prone to defects
pros: many color options (can mix it to get ones that aren't canned), can be cheaper than anodizing in some cases, often easier to get done local
cons: bad cerakoting is (in terms of looks) worse than bad anodizing, excessively durable in terms of keyboards unless you're weird and keep knives on your desk, hard to find cerakote shops in some places
from my experience with cerakoting and anodizing and discussions with makers, the hierarchy is a bit like this: good anodizing > good cerakote > bad anodizing > bad cerakote
my personal preference is powdercoat, since there are lot more color/finish options than cerakote, and i think it looks better
poco is less durable and often more expensive to do than cerakote, however
hope this helpsGoing to put up a form later and see where the interest lies. i agree, but imagine the work involved in QCing 70 boards where you have to color match all of them
Thank you Puddsy, I had a feeling you would come through with the goods here :thumb:

Hopefully little effort needs to be made, judging by the comments, I think there will be a quite high quantity. Should be easier on your wallet too :cool:Interesting, will the limited editions have different weight cut outs/serial numbers like the 268?

Aluminum plate for both :)
For the sample PCBs, I'll order red and make my choice after that. Might as well mix it up a bit!
P.S. Added a hole that'll be on all plates for the reset button (for when programming). It's the worst thing when you're done assembling a case and need to undo 10 screws to press it :'(Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/YdeZtpc.png)
Saw your Noxary's Project Page and was curious about the naming convention. Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere but I'm wondering why some names have the 'X' prefix and some don't.
On the other hand, I'd really appreciate a non-brass insert as an option. I'm really struggling when carrying the X60. The inertia is so great that bouncing around might damage the keys/switches. Therefore I have to wrap it excessively each time. The super smooth finish doesn't help either. Most people here probably don't mind but I think the point needs to be made.

Navy would be sooo hot. How many more standard colors were you thinking of doing? I'd be most interested in the standard dark gray or some kind of blue if you include that as an option.

280/220 can be broken down to Series 2 (2XX), and 80/20%.
Series 2 is essentially the architecture of the cases which took almost a year of research/modelling etc. Thinking about it, I'm not sure there will be a Series 3.
Of course the only three boards to make it to GB are exceptions to this naming scheme (xondat 60; Series 2 68 key; xondat 60 revised)
Maaaaaybe. It isn't in my vision but I can completely understand it. It would save 993 grams :))Navy would be sooo hot. How many more standard colors were you thinking of doing? I'd be most interested in the standard dark gray or some kind of blue if you include that as an option.
My 268 AG is Navy, so if I fall in love with it (I hope I will), then it'll make its return.
I don't want to make standard too complicated, as that's saved for the limited builds, but I don't want to make the customization gap too large as it'll just flop. Unsure on everything at the minute.
Neon Tie Dye Mix better be a standard color.
You joke, but cerakote can be applied in as many layers as you've got money to pay for

This has me wondering if it's possible to do something like a pearlescent anodized aluminum. That would be amazing.

Idiot here, I forgot the option for winkey/winkeyless. It doesn't matter too much because both will happen anyway. Maybe just quote this saying which you'd use? I imagine split is about 60/40 WKL/WK.

Filled out! Wkl for me. So if I'm reading this right, the 220 will be limited edition only? If I got a standard board could I still get a 220?
Winkey, standard ANSI layout.
I'm interested in 280, just not sure about all the options -
need to find out what some of them actually mean
One question: where would this ship from? UK?
Ahh, I need to change my survey answers a bit lol
Has anyone tried 5mm brass?

Fixed means singular layout, so it'll be a clean plate. Universal will cover all traditional options. Partial means there will only be a plate around the modifiers, so the alpha keys will have no plate, and will feel like PCB mount aka plateless. 5mm means a 5mm plate, so will feel & sound different.
It'll ship directly from me, so the UK. Shipping prices aren't terrible ($50-60 CONUS 2 day tracked).

oh, I misunderstood the plate options. I'll have to resubmit as well :-[

I wasn't able to reach the form in time, but if I can purchase a black 280 plus shipping for under 400$ I'm an 100% in.
Been following this thread since the start, wasn't sure if I wanted to participate until i compared the price of the 280 with other similar custom boards.
If the final price for a black 280 plus shipping is over 400 I unfortunately can't do it- otherwise I'm all in.
Under $400 aim is without shipping as this varies greatly. Definitely won't hit $400 with shipping.

Massive thanks to Oblotzky for the amazing renders :-* :-*I wasn't able to reach the form in time, but if I can purchase a black 280 plus shipping for under 400$ I'm an 100% in.
Been following this thread since the start, wasn't sure if I wanted to participate until i compared the price of the 280 with other similar custom boards.

I'm confused, is the "sub 175" in the first description for the tenkey pad or just a random goal?
Either way, it's a pretty good price
also is there an alps pcb that will fit this
Where are you shipping from? I'm in US-FL. Slightly over 400 probably isn't a big deal

Apparently the LF Keyboards SMK/Alps TKL PCB overall dimensions are 344.5mm x 123.75mm. Maybe xondat can let us know if that would fit the dimensions of the case
sounds like he already ruled it out due to switch pin length though. Didn't even know that was a relevant attribute

UK; it's likely to be $60, 2 day tracked shipping.Under $400 aim is without shipping as this varies greatly. Definitely won't hit $400 with shipping.

Sub $175 is my goal for the pad.
Alps won't fit as the switch pins are too long. I also don't have any interest in developing Alps for now :-[
Definitely interested but not now; too many projects and low on cash, sorry buddy!
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
my x60R doesn't even exist yet and it's already getting jealous
Has anyone tried 5mm brass?
5mm is still fairly untouched, not sure many have actually typed on it. I still need to order a prototype after CNY, but it's something I've worked with RagingPwner on.Show Image(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/393398042037846016/419326941980524584/x60v2_e.png)I want a 220! Any ETA on the GB? Also curious about what the interest survey results were...

Price will vary depending on custom colour though right? Like if four people all want the same custom colour anodisation, theirs will be cheaper than a one off anodisation?

Didn't happen with 268 so probably not.

Yes, most hard anos are usually black or a dark color but it's sort of overkill for a keyboard anyways. I think it's worth it to just go type II and have a variety of colors, namely silver ;D.

Is there any interest in an ISO only plate? I originally made it with the files, might consider running it if a few want it. CLEAN PLATES FOR ALL!
I wanted a tight ANSI but a few of my sets don't have stepped caps, so I would need a universal (am I right thinking the fixed ANSI is stepped only?)

GB info since a lot of stuff is happening at the minute...H Y P E
I still need to order the prototype, but I can't until I've decided what to do with the port placement. Should be deciding tomorrow, and have it ordered by the end of the week.
I can't run more than 2 GBs on GH so it'll be after 268 anyway. Will also show the sort of quality this will be (and judging by the parts from production I already have, it'll be 10/10).
Most likely will have a large GB window but with limit slots to hopefully fill them all. If they aren't filled, probably will get extras as the price I'm aiming for would be at the higher quantity :)
How tall is the 280 board on both sides? What's the keyboard in the middle? Looks interesting.
I'll say it straight away, no plans to run it yet :'(You make me cry :(

15mm front faces on all. Dunno about the back.
Keyboard in the middle is a 78 key, same layout as KMAC Mini. It's mainly a reference design as it's the same depth as a 60%, and same width as the TKL.

Ugh, 6 projects are a lot. Do you (plan to) handle them all by yourself alone, or will you have some people to help you with them (especially shipping, quality control, talking to the companies etc)? I'd never in my life have the time to do that all alone :D
Even if I had the money it'd be pretty difficult to get one.
This is kinda unrelated, but will we see an x60 v2 anytime soon?

I've got a few questions:
1. Could you clarify the differences between the 280, 280S, and 280T versions ?
2. Will there only be a 220S? or will un-numbered 220 numpads also be available?
3. Will the little dolphin above the arrow cluster really be there? ( I like it personally ;) )

joined the discord channel already but created an account just to ask this question: by universal PCB does this mean it supports other ones in the such as the TKL87 L3? I'm asking this in regards to the Noxary 280 :D
Any chance you'll be able to offer a silver plate in addition to/instead of a red one for the 280 T? That's the only thing stopping me from going for the T right now.

When are you expected to get the prototype  ?
Hey Xondat,
Any pictures of the plate by itself? Just curious if you cut any extra reliefs into it for flexibility or not. The extra plate options seem really interesting.

There isn't any solid research into the extra cuts, but I will be doing some, and if I think it's a massive improvement, I'll probably implement it.

Thank you! I am really curious about the effect on extra reliefs especially near the mounting points to isolate the case from vibration. As well as the effect on sound/feel. Great work on the board, looking forward to it.

Yeah me too. I think boards that use singular layouts sound nicer than universal in my experience, and I couldn't really compare feel in a 65% anyway.
I'll be testing this (or some very close variant, definitely adding stuff for the spacebar/2.25+ keys) in the short future.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/ZVrZ7WH.png)
I've already worked towards isolation, but in this case between the case and the plate. Hopefully the picture shows it enough:Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/XgjVs67.png)
I'm ordering prototypes for both of these and will go with the better version :p
As for general sound/feeling improvements, I've got 15+ different concepts to try out. Very excited to start to test them, but it'll be after I start this buy, and improvements will be implemented in Series 3 :(
No problem!
I am also curious in extra relief cuts immediately above/below the mount points of the plate itself. I've seen a few OTD boards that have implemented this and it seemed interesting...Either way I'd like to get a 2 series and 3 series if anything for the sake of comparison. Great work! It's really refreshing to see someone thinking critically about these things.
Very interested in these plate cuts and other revisions to mounting etc. - this is what I'm looking for in new designs these days :thumb:

Yes, the 456gt is exactly what I am referencing. It seems OTD went to great lengths to create as many cuts as possible to isolate the plate and case. I would also assume that it makes each row of keys sound and feel more consistent with one another.
You know it :thumb:(https://i.imgur.com/zqi7DMP.png)

Don't worry, it's not actually happening .. rip
The main culprit here is the massive brass weight. It'd be 30% cheaper without it, and it's seriously making me consider doing a lightweight version that's drops the weight.
This guy. Too good :p

I’d consider buying without weight and running the brass weight later so it’s less of an upfront cost. But I’m just bad at commitments so that’s just me :sigh:
I'll be in for the 5mm brass plate option... I wonder if it will have enough of a weight difference to change shipping costs... Oh well, it's only money right?

I (rather annoyingly) can justify every single option, but I am thinking of cutting a few if they go unmentioned. I think 7-8 options would be best.
You could make a google form with these options and allow like max. 2 picks and the 7-8 plates with the most votes will be offered.
Also, what about steel? :))
Steel feels awful, so no, sorry!
Steel feels awful, so no, sorry!I see, no worries, brass is fine, too :)
Yikes, that's a lot of choices... Is there somewhere I can read about the different characteristics ( pros/cons ) of the different plate materials?
I feel that you’d only need one 5mm option, say brass, because it is primarily for maximising weight and rigidity, right?
As for me, a fixed poly plate is all I need :D

I really wish there were more with the layout support of the 5mm. I don't think I can deal with anything that doesn't support split right shift, and I greatly prefer full touch caps for ctrl. Now i dunno what to do since the only brass plate is the one I'd never user.

I think I'm going to wait for that, so sorry if I don't jump on the 280 xondat :-[

I love the design though; this is something I'd wait a year for especially with the quality of the 268. The layout with arrow keys stepped in and blocker above the right arrow key is one of my ultimate keyboard fetishes, and the only thing I would personally change is to block off the 2 keys in the row above the top arrow key like a TKL (would be awesome as an option in the eventual GB or something).
All said, this is as endgame as it gets for me, so I might as well wait for it ;D

Well I won't spoil too much, but it'll likely be a one layout deal as it is a modernized G80-5000.
Still figuring out what to use instead of the original bottom row, it's impossible to source 3.5u Cherry spacebars :(

If say 5 people wanted 7075, and they're all the same color, I'm happy to make it happen.
Basically, as long as the effort isn't wasted, it's fine.

Pretty sure you can. They did it with TGR Jane, Mira SE, OTD 356clIf say 5 people wanted 7075, and they're all the same color, I'm happy to make it happen.

I don't think you can get 7075 in silver
I'll ask what's possible with 7075 soon.
Anyone down to try 5 series? ;)

You can definitely get 7075 in silver as long as the anodized layer is thin enough, the iphone 6s did it but google tells me it's aluminum oxide layer was only about 10 microns thick (likely to cut costs).
I would totally be in if 7075 does happen as long as the price isn't too crazy, dark grey would be my preferred colour but silver is fine too.
I know nothing about metal, what's so special about 7075? More scratch resistant? Heavier?
I know nothing about metal, what's so special about 7075? More scratch resistant? Heavier?7k series alu is most often used and anodized for the automotive industry because of its strength compared to other aluminum series. 6k series aluminum like 6061 hard anodize really well and 6063 is the go to alloy for cosmetic anodizing. Both series can anodize well, but 7k series has more problems than 6k due to how much zinc is used in the alloy. More zinc means a more brown-like coating.
So 7075 is worse for anodizing? Why is everyone interested in it then? Btw, not trying to be critical or anything, just trying to learn :)I know nothing about metal, what's so special about 7075? Its not necessarily worse, its just that the alloy can be harder to work with. There is a noticeable difference between anodized 7075 aluminum and 6061/3 aluminum. A lot of automotive parts that are anodized are made from 7k series aluminum, if you want an example of how it looks. So 7075 is worse for anodizing? Why is everyone interested in it then? Thanks for digging this up! The post was extremely informative, and I can definitely tell the difference in smoothness of the ano between 7075 and 6061.Its not necessarily worse, its just that the alloy can be harder to work with. Here's a post showing the differences. You can see 7075 with a brownish/broze tint. IMO, 7075 has a smoother look to it and gives a better aesthetic despite being more difficult to anodize. This gives rise to an issue with the top case not being the exact same color as the bottom case due to the difficulty in anodizing. Xondat is manufacturing at a very good factory, so it can be assumed that they will be able to properly anodize 7075, but this would not be an option in many other factories.

That's strange, it's supposed to look like polycarbonate. :))
Do you have an ETA on when the GB will start or are you still running 2 GB's and can't do another one?
Oh and just to clarify, 268 (anodized units) will be fully shipped before I start this buy, as I know a lot will want to see the improved quality compared to X60 V1Can we expect another x60 run near the end of this year or do you think that's likely to happen in 2019?

Sorry, slightly off topic.
So closing a GB thread before shipping makes a GB non existing on geekhack? Questionable way to avoid a questionable rule.Do you have an ETA on when the GB will start or are you still running 2 GB's and can't do another one?
Samples should be sent this week.
I won't have any GBs on geekhack when I finish shipping 268, so the 2 GB rule isn't an issue :)

It's probably about time that the 220 got some love ;)
Pre-finishing of course.
Any info on how the 5mm brass plate would feel/sound?
really love it...hope i could join
Looks amazing. I wish I could afford it. You rock mate. The more I use my X60 the more I appreciate it. I've just realized what an incredible keyboard it is.
Just sell me the board already ;D

Any info on how the 5mm brass plate would feel/sound?
nobody has any idea
Keep in mind that the sound also heavily depends on the case itself. As long as you don't have to comparable builds in the same case with both plate variants you can hardly say which one sounds better.
Colors sample?
Oh I never said when they'll arrive.
Friday.
