temped to sell my steel plate from GB#3 and get an HHKB plate from this buy...
Is there a benefit to HHKB layout besides looking cool? (ease of use, ergonomics... etc)
There are many threads and reviews about the HHKB already, that I think there is no need to revisit the subject here; however, there is a small piece of information that I think has not been discussed before about the layout, it has to do with the empty spaces at the bottom, they allow to have six corners instead of four, and each one is an easy to find spot that speeds up the activation of the keys located there. I have not thught on this much, but recently. I am using the layout at two boards, one at home, one at the office, and I noticed that after some weeks, the corners are very handy to speed up the activation of keys that was a bit harder to reach with the corner key caps installed. This fact may be the same for the winkey-less layout, that isolates the corners, but I prefer the aesthetics of the HHKB one. Regarding the second layer, I do not use the HHKB one but my own, using Space as FN key, so I cannot share any witness opinion on it and I do not use the backspace on top of the Enter either, I use the conventional 2u backspace at the top right corner, for the same reason I have explained, the corners are always easier to find by touch typing.
