Hi guys, just wanted to share this personal project of mine that has kept me busy for weeks. So it all started when I did the first "KIRA" renders, a 96-key as some people might know. I liked the idea of a full size keyboard in a compact layout, so the 96 seemed like the perfect layout for me. I bough a b.mini EX X2 which is similar, and then a ZZ96 and I was happy, at first anyway. Then I realized that I had a hard time finding the arrow keys because there's no spacing between the alphas and arrow keys. That led me to trying out the 1800, which while great since it's kinda shorter, still takes up a lot of space. I am currently using a TX-1800 at home, it's a great keyboard but I still want to try what is basically a compact 1800 like the LZCP and the TXCP. Which led me to my first custom.

So here it is, the first prototype of what is basically a 96-key layout grouped into alphas, arrows and numpad. Big thanks to riotonthebay and Input Club's Brandon for all the advice and help they provided, It would've taken me too long to do this without their awesome help. I would also like to thank forevermadrigal, geckt, rainb1ood, gatix, krytone and livingspeedbump for being so supportive of my designs. I don't expect a lot of people to like it, but your enthusiasm with what I do already makes it worth it.  :thumb:

I call it the KIRA EX.

So, the next steps. I'm trying to find someone who can design the PCB for me. I've already talked to Leeku and a friend, and I just need to decide how to go about it. I only just checked the spacing with GMK 9009 and I'm happy to know that my CAD and measurements weren't an epic failure. I've already updated the design too, to reduce the gap of the bezel from the caps, reduce the top bezel width, and add some polish to the corners and edges. I've also designed a weight insert since the bottom of the first prototype was really bare (did it to reduce the cost in case it was a **** up).

Thanks for reading, and I'll be updating this as the project develops  :thumb:

Also, the title is "KIRA keyboards" because I have other layouts planned, and this GH60 case is probably next:

Thanks Bunny!

Also I forgot to mention, the inserts are supposed to be either metal or acrylic, but I just tried to screw them together. In the new design I have it thicker, but realized doing two-tone inserts might be great for accent. :D

The point of a compacted F-row here I think in my point of view is the overall decrease in the size of the keyboard.

Edit: this is purely my own views, I do not affect any of the preference made by the designer for the kira 96.

Thanks! I already have a TX-1800 and a ZZ96 so I'll be trying something of a hybrid. When I have the PCB made and actually used it for a several weeks, I will know if the layout is good for me. :)

The current weight design will add another 1 Kg to the case if brass is used, compared to Aluminum.

0.497 Kg for Aluminum weight
1.546 Kg for Brass weight
1.454 Kg for Steel weight

Sorta like a TX-CP, but different enough due to the F row without gaps.  With reduces bezels (especiallyat the top) you have yourself a winner.  I was looking forward to the KIRA 96key but I already have a board in that layout, but no compact 1800 style board so I'd probably be in!

I'm glad you like it! I used to scoff at big bezels, but after a while I started thinking thin bezels look so generic when looking straight down on it (IMO). Maybe it's because I'm currently using a TX-1800, but I don't think it will look as good with thin bezels. Anyway, I reduced the top bezel by 4mm, and I think it fits the necessary bottom bezel (because of the arrow keys offset).

The updated CAD drawings look nice.  I think the bezels are spot on there.

Thanks! Hopefully a working PCB by August so I can start using it! I'll probably go for a black one for the next kit  :D

Still have to find a suitable PCB for the compact 1800, but here's my other design for a 60%, The KIRA60 FE. These photos were taken from the factory, and hopefully I will receive the board tomorrow or the next day.

Not really planning to offer a 60% PCB, which is why I shifted my focus to this for now, since the PCB and the plate can be acquired just about anywhere.

Is there a way to setup an RSS so that you never miss when group buys go live? I would love to get into RSS feeds but I don't know how.

My focus right now has shifted to the 60%, and I'm waiting on news for the PCB for the compact 1800. I'm not sure which layout you wanted, but right now I'm not planning anything until I have a working board. The 60% still needs minor tweaks, I'll probably raise the bezel and make the weight design on the bottom bigger. You can subscribe to this thread for when I post updates  :thumb:

I have been lurking around for more Kira (I:C) updates and found out about this. Good on you for both concepts (btw I hope you like the compact with no space between f-row, I sure do):thumb:, but now this is throwing a wrench in my plans because both boards are very appealling! Woe is me :-\.... heck if there is a sufficient gap between releases I might consider purchasing both.

I can't really say anything about the keyboard IC is working on, it's now out of my hands and they're still busy with their other keyboards. They said they'll try to launch it this year, but who knows? I'd rather focus on things I actually have control on. I won't be making a new prototype for the KIRA EX until I have a PCB to put in it.

That said, I now have a working board for the KIRA60. I'm glad the first prototype only has minor things I will be changing, and I'm actually using it right now. Here are some potato shots I did myself, since my photographer friend is out of the country:

I have been lurking around for more Kira (I:C) updates and found out about this. Good on you for both concepts (btw I hope you like the compact with no space between f-row, I sure do):thumb:, but now this is throwing a wrench in my plans because both boards are very appealling! Woe is me :-\.... heck if there is a sufficient gap between releases I might consider purchasing both.

:thumb: absolutely in love with the angles used for these cases, will definitely be keeping an eye out on this Kira60.

I guess we will see when I:C's board overcomes the light emitting "basefoot" hurdle. Ethier way I'm interested to see the future for both however far off we are from the release dates. I'm definitely in no rush anyways since I've been knee deep in keycap group buys as of late.

Yeah, that diffuser bottom and the indicator holes at the side are a hurdle for sure. Thank you for the support  :)

Not finalized at the moment, although I have already asked quotes for brass, stainless steel and of course, aluminum. Stainless steel is the most expensive one, around double the others because "it's harder so it's not as easy to cut". Brass and anodized aluminum is around the same price.

Thanks! Yes I'm from the Philippines, but currently in Singapore.

As for an update, I am waiting for the 2nd version of the 60% which should be in production, and waiting for a prototype PCB of the compact 1800 which is also under development. In the mean time, I can't just stay idle and count the days, so I made this:

Kabayan!

The sun and stars design will be used for all my own projects, but not for Input Club's.  :)

I know Invidious, but a LED-free PCB/case could also help keep costs down and maintain the clean lines of a case. (like the KIRA60 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=91827.0)) :thumb:

Currently considering my options for that 75%, but I plan to have the second prototype for my compact 1800 made first.

Hey, I just have a suggestion for your 75% keyboard's option.
Few weeks ago, I saw some keyboards that are including white color(MAO?) option.
All colors of your keyboards are awesome, but I'll absolutely fall in love with yours if it provides white color :D

I think you're the first one who asked for it, I will have to think about it. As an ANSI user I dislike the lack of stability a universal plate has, I'll have to check how feasible offering two plates will be (ANSI and UNIVERSAL). I'm expecting a prototype soon. Thank you!

I'd be in for a Kira-84. Currently just waiting for the Kira96 to drop.

The KIRA96 should be coming soon™, and the latest prototype will be at the Phoenix meetup AFAIK.

regarding the lack of thought put into ISO support, will the 96 support ISO?

ISO market is growing and will miss out on customers wanting ISO... as a mainly ISO user I'd be willing to pay a few bucks extra for ISO specific (or universal) plate

Here are some photos of the Kira 75 prototype with SP Calm Depths. Some info:

- top mounted plate (aluminum, but brass might be offered as an option)
- aluminum or acrylic accent strip/layer
- 3 LEDs on the upper left (provisions on the custom PCB)
- big-ass brass weight makes this thing really heavy for its size
- bootmapper client to program the custom PCB

All the boards I designed and developed use 8°, the 96-key by Input Club is 8.5° last time I checked.

Thanks! The TKL prototype hasn't actually started production, probably next week! PCB should be compatible with Leeku's, but we're looking into having our own designed too. For the TKL GB, it's up to beamingrobot. I'm not sure if he's willing to do overlapping buys, so I can't really say since we haven't really finalized any schedules.

Really excited to hear that the TKL will be running next as I love the aesthetic of your current boards and especially the TKL one! I know that it is currently in the prototype stage and the PCB is being done but is there a rough time scale on when it will be ready assuming no issues :)

Also eagerly awaiting the TKL - those angles :p

Thanks, glad you like it!

I'm a big fan of the 75% side angles and overall design.  That red spacer is pretty snazzy too.

I have to say the 75% is currently my favorite too. I wasn't sure it will look good although I was thinking it should, but when I saw the prototype in person I loved it! :)

Will the upcoming kira models like the kira 75 have the new weight design? really like it!

The 75 prototyping stage is already done and it has the stars and sun weight design, which will stay as is. The TKL will probably be the first board to be run as a group buy with the new weight.

So will the 75 be the next for a group buy?

Diffuser/alu middle? Single piece or double piece case?

Sorry I missed this question, there's no diffuser or aluminum middle insert. I don't think it fits the design, a middle insert will break the facets and distract from the design rather than complement it.

It's a 4-piece kit; a top, bottom, switch plate, and weight.

I agree, and good green anodizing is rare. Plus a fresh round of terminal is soon.

Can I vote for metal-inspired anodizing colors, like rose gold, copper, bronze, pewter?  I mentioned it in the EXS IC, but I think those are great for layered case options.  "Space gray" is a relatively good approximation of stainless steel, so I'm glad it was an option for EXS (would be even more interesting in a brushed finish rather than sandblasted.) In general some less common and less pure colors would be cool.

Agreed! A dark green would be really nice and doesn't seem to be offered very often. Personally I'm also biased towards one of my favorite colors which is burgundy. GMK Red Samurai anyone? :)

I've asked for a universal plate prototype, it's my first time trying to make it so I hope everything fits  :))

For the colors, we'll just have to discuss that next time. It adds a lot of work for color matching and quality assurance and the factory found multiple colors to be too problematic. It's hard when most people that are voting choose the safer colors most of the time. I'll have to talk to beamingrobot about this next time.

Also, just for the record, BeamingRobots factory produces the nicest boards I’ve seen.

I was kind of amazed by the Kira60, there were so many hard edges without a mark or occlusion. Plus there are a few different curves and all are perfect. The anodizing is great. My favorite is the brass plates tho. Somehow my kira plate weighs an extra ounce over my Leandren plates. And the cuts and blasted finish are perfect.

My favorite part of the design that I hadn’t even noticed in the renders is the little flare out on the top left/right corners.

Boards made/planned and current status:

KIRA EX : 96-key layout with spacing between arrow keys and numpad, 2nd prototype under production

KIRA EXS : KIRA EX with Slimmer bezels, prototypes finished, GB soon

KIRA75: 75% keyboard, prototypes done and PCB prototypes currently being redesigned for qmk

KIRA60: group buy kits shipped out

Are all of these going through I:C?  Just curious.  And will there be a wider GB of the KIRA60?

As far as I’m aware the Kira60, EXS, TKL, EX, 75 etc are thesiscamper's custom boards made to extremely high quality with customiseable colours, plates etc. They intend to run Limited GB’s of up to 30 in a raffle format and not re run them ever or at least for a long while.

The input club Kira is going to be a Kickstarter that’s run by I:C and will have a much larger MOQ or maybe even an unlimited production over a certain time period so will be more accessible to the masses and those who have been wanting a Kira kb but have missed out on the preceding GB’s. I can’t say whether the board will have the same quality of materials and heft, but I’m sure the guys will be able to clarify this all for you before too long.

Something out of the norm in this thread, I asked Krytone if we can try to have some aluminum caps machined. We used his Crowned Skull design to test what can be done:

The stems are quite loose especially on Cherry MX stems (not so much on box switches) and will need adjustment, but I would say it's not bad for a first try without relying on other people's measurements.

GB for which one? The 75 isn't really planned any time soon, and the Crowned Skulls are just a test and won't be made for a sale.

Out of curiosity, is that the red shade on the aluminum keycaps that will be used for Kira EXS?  It's very nice, a deeper red.

It is the same red across the buys, from KIRA60 to EXS. The windows where I took the photo has a bluish tint though, and I didn't adjust for white balance.

The quality is really good, but from what I've seen "white" MAO gets dirty easily. I was told this particular finish has anti-dirt qualities, I'll know more after some time. It looks really good in person :)

That's interesting--the ease of getting marks and dirt onto the finish is why I haven't seriously considered it so far. Looking forward to your findings.

Was chatting with thesis about this some time back but my experience with MAO was that it tends to scratch easily given that it's a rather thin layer and a process that produces greyish white rather than a 'pure' white colour.

also MAO is expensive :P

I can get my hands real greasy, if you need some stress testing ;)

I'm torn though. I saw Kingnestea's black Kira 60% at a meetup and the finish on that was drop dead gorgeous. I've been craving a white keyboard, but I somehow think the angular design of this one would look better in black than white... If I get into the GB, I'm gonna have a hard time deciding on color :p

The white was more of a test, and honestly it's really good but like anything white the slightest smudge tends to make it look dirty easily. I would think grey and black is good, matte black would be a nice prototype sample.

No, I never considered it. I don't think I am that good in doing builds (I assume you mean tuning and soldering).

I agree with the color, but unfortunately the anodizing isn't very good. It's not atrocious, but still imperfect with unevenness and mismatching shade. This is still good enough to confirm measurements. The plate from the KIRA80 is a drop-in.

Yep that's and my IG account mostly. I'm planning to sell the 75% prototype, it's one of two kits (other one is with regionfree). If anyone's interested just PM me.

It has the stars and sun weight, the latest design is different and will not be named Kira.

All style Kira60 v2 are top-mount ? Will Standard have traymount ? And, when gb it ?

There won't be any tray mount KIRA60 kits made again.

Hi, is the Kira60 projected to be after the MiR80 run or are you designing and manufacturing them parallel ? I'm very interested in the kira60's angular side design so far !

Is there a pricing estimate for the Kira60, trying to decide between Fjell and Paradox.

200-300 or 300-400?

Filled out. Depending on timing, final quote, and additional details -- photos of prototype, plate/PCB/case/weight details -- I could be interested in joining. I like this case, but would definitely want to know of what it looks and sounds like, as there already seems to be a prototype available.

The plate mounting points have changed, so the sound probably changed too from this early prototype.

So the clear-ish looking bit where the board splits is supposed to be aluminum? I was confused as to what it is supposed to be/why it is rendered differently

Sorry, by side glows I meant the sides, front and rear. I forgot to mention the inner sides where the splits meet can possibly be plastic.

To clarify, it’s not “beamingrobot’s manu” because I introduced him to the factory, and I was intorduced to this factory by another designer. The KIRA60 will be made by the same manufacturer that made the v1 and EXS, and most of my other prototypes. The KN2.10 will be made by a different manufacturer.

For the split TKL we’re waiting on the PCB designer so I can finalize the case. Yes it’s going to be made by the same manufacturer that made the KIRA60s, EXS and other prototypes.
