It's a 3D controller, not a mouse...stupid person who wrote the article.  Been around forever too, used to be called Spaceballs and were originally made by Labtec (amazingly enough lol)

which is owned by logitech.  3dConnexion is also owned by logitech, although it's much higher quality brand.  Who would buy a $500 mouse from labtec (crap brand) when they could buy it from 3dConnexion who specializes in 3d navigation utilities...

yeah, imo1.1 se is very sought after because of it's glossy surface which gives very good control while the surface of imo1.1 is a little bit "grainy" :) but it's the only difference between this two. hf with the imo1.1. nice mouse (i own two of them :)

Another member here said he didn't like the grit-type surface of the regular 1.1, but I'm not sure I would dislike it.  I would have to try it to make sure, though.  I probably will be buying one in the next week.  It's been "on my list" for a while now.

yeah, for some users its an issue :| but give it a try :)
is you want to save a little bit money you can buy IMO1.1a. This is the OEM version of the regular one, only without drivers, box and guarantee. you can find the drivers on the microsoft-homepage if needed.

btw.: IME 3.0 has the same optical sensor as the IMO1.1 if you like it more :)

Yeah, just the shape. If you want it cheaper you can even get the Wheelmouse Optical 1.1 (WMO1.1). It has the same optical sensor too :)

yep they've been around for a while and always carry a hefty price tag. this ones more expensive because its larger has a screen even more buttons.

They are used as Media Creation/Editting Tools, like all work flow tools you have to get used to them. It is 3D due to the twist forward back ward motions you can do with them, a puck like flight stick as it were. They are more precise and due to the numerous controls they can be used to create different effects.

This is a 3D design tool for use with programs like Maya, 3D studio, Lightwave, CAD, and Softimage. It is also used with the left (or non-mouse) hand to rotate and maneuver the camera in 3D while the mouse hand is used to select and manipulate polygons etc.

Its basically to cut down the "double duty" of the mouse in these programs, since the mouse manipulates the camera (normally with a mod key like ctrl) and then after positioning it is used to paint or select.

I guess when your job is to produce 3D models and environments quickly in an industry like games or post production, every second counts. But for the average user this thing is not even an option.

I'm a motion graphics artist by occupation, and a doorknob with a couple buttons is pretty much all I need that would be considered 'extra equipment'. I couldn't imagine putting anything important on that screen that would require me to look down so often. The article did get circled around work a bit, but no one really had anything to say about it.

(Almost) the first 3D software I worked with was Superscape VRT. It came with the original SpaceMouse. The SpaceMouse was really well integrated. You could move, rotate, scale objects by just using the regular mouse. They would align and connect automatically if moved. Because of that you could leave your left hand on the SpaceMouse for longer periods.

In Maya for ex. you have to hit the keyboard with the left hand to switch between move/rotate/scale. It's easier to leave the hand on the keyboard for viewport changes then.

It's Toms Hardware "reviewing" it... They're idiots.

Most "serious" websites reference Tom's with a roll-eyes.

In GH terms, it's MX switches. Tehcnically correct (Mechanical), but fairly crap in general.

"Balky" Alps.

I still want a keyboard with some in, just to feel what a "balky" switch feels like. I suspect it will bring out the same feelings of rage that a Balky PC does when I am trying to fix it.

It may not be deliberate.  The right shift on my '90 1391401 had a bent shaft and it was balky, and I think dying my Customizer may have distorted a few keys.

Depends on the application. The support in animiation software was always lame so it doesn't help much there, if at all. Got my first space mouse with Superscape VRT (now defunct virtual reality software) and it was really well implemented. Left hand on the space mouse, right hand on the mouse for basic construction. With current animation software you have the left hand on the keyboard for shortcuts and the right hand on the mouse which makes it easier to do your viewport manipulations just with the mouse while the 3D controller would require to reposition the left hand.

Fun for fly-throughs though.
