[IC] GMK R5 collective add-on kit.
« on: Wed, 12 July 2017, 14:04:13 »
Lately there have been a nice number of interesting GMK group buys but sadly none of their designer offered R5 keycaps. While I totally understand they are quite unpopular, those of us around here who actually use them know how good they feel and how nice they look on our keyboards.
Because producing one add-on kit at a time would be quite expensive, my idea is to organize a collective GB with a reasonable number of kits from different schemes.
Since R5 keys are found on both sides of the spacebar, the MOQ for each colour scheme would be halved as an individual order would contain two of each key.
The keys to include would be: two 1.5u Control, two 1.5u Alt and two 1u Winkeys.

Granted that we gather enough interest, the steps to follow would be:
  • Decide on what colour schemes to include;
  • Ask their designers permission to use the colour scheme and the sets' names;
  • Choose what to feature on the Winkey (either text or logo and eventually which);
  • Ask GMK for a quote;
  • Find a GB leader to collect money, place the order and then ship the keycaps out.

I'd appreciate your inputs.

OMG YES. R5 for life.

My vote is for Hydro, obviously, but not too sure how many sets there are in the wild compared to others, and especially if there are owners who'd want R5.

Classic Beige, of course. Maybe icon mods-only for 9009?

HyperFuse, Dolch, and Skidata+ come to mind.

Classic Beige
Classic Beige had a R5 row, and it's easily found on some old keyboards.

The sets I had in mind are actually: Oblivion, Nautilus, Solarized dark, Plum, (the upcoming) Nekro, Skeletor and perhaps Skidata+.

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

But not everyone has access to it. I have a Classic Beige R5 as well in PBT but would like a GMK set in the vein of 9009.

75% keyboards do not have a separation between num row and function row. Having R5 function keys to create some height difference to the num row would be nice. I know it is impossible to gather enough interest though...

We shall see how many would like to access them then.

Moved this to IC, since that seems to be where it's headed

I feel like you've gotta throw Carbon in there. Maybe Hyperfuse as well.

Being it a collective add-on kit, I would gladly include both, granted that T0mb3ry and BunnyLake (and the other gentlemen at [CTRL]ALT) are ok with that.

Skydolch is very popular, so maybe it can be included

Anyone happen to have some image reference on the R5/A? Can't find anything definite with google and friends. Some reddit thread had a few images linked from DT but did not see any definite difference in those.

Why no 1.25u keys and the rest of the bottom row? the audience would be bigger that way (yes, would be more expensive too).

In any case, I would start with the top 10 selling GMK sets and the popular RGB and CMY kits. :)

(Also Yuri and Laser pls.)

R5 is only available in 1.5u and 1u.

Ah I see, you mean new molds would have to be made by GMK otherwise?

Thanks for the image, clear difference there. :)

For 1.25u keys? Sure, but I believe GMK has no desire in doing so. R5 1u and 1.5u molds already exist. That profile is usually found on older boards.

R0 would be more appropriate for the Function row, not R5

That's one thing that I have considered, but R5 keys are already very unpopular. I'm exploiting the fact that one would need two keys for each keyboard, basically halving the MOQ, adding arrow keys would deny that and the interest is already very very low.

i think r5 for famous add on would be cool too. like cmyk and rgby, since the r5 keys is basically only alt and control, you could also make it in such way that in 1 pack, it has a combo of both cmyk r5 and rgby r5.

The last CMYK buy hosted already had R5 keys
