Sorry I couldn't finish up those keypullers.  Had some real life issues that sucked up a bunch of time.  What did you guys think of the prototype.

Lynx is a text-based web browser. I've got it running on my mint box for when I want to impress non-nerds.

Most RPi distros are debian-based, iirc

Yeah-- it's funny to see so much "embargo" and "NDA" stuff on this.

It's a keyboard.

It uses a known technology.  This is not a market like GPUs, where a week earlier knowledge will allow your aggressive competitors to **** their entire pricing and product offerings to counter you.  Your biggest threat is a company named after a rubber bath toy.

Especially for the mainstream people who are going to outbuy us fifty-to-one on any keyboard product (see: Razer still in business), there's nothing that could possibly be revealed that would be particularly exciting.

Unless there's some terrible secret.  "We hired Kailh to manufacture Toprealike switches, since they did such a great job on MXalike!"  "French Canadian AZERTY is the only layout choice".  "It's actually a real-life Deceipticon, and our world is just a Michael Bay movie"

Baseless conspiracy theories:

1. Coolermaster is discontinuing most of the Cherry MX products and are doing the resellers a solid by letting them deplete their inventory / and or letting existing contracts expire.

2. Someone discovered either a bug or qc issue with the first batch of boards and are now in lock down mode getting them all repaired/updated.  Unlike some very noticeable issues on the other QFR boards (see Newegg/Amazon reviews for boards either DOA or dead weeks later) they must get this premium product right the first time for such an expensive board.

3. Some sort of loop hole in EK's contracts with Leopold that prevent taking pictures/etc for some reason even if only temporarily.

Given such suspicious behavior I do think I'll take a wait and see attitude of what others say of the mass produced version before deciding to buy.

About the novatouch, I talked to the guy about it for a bit. Here's the reason.

It's a very new product for them. It is _not_ based on "known" technology. It's also not just a topre keyboard with MX compatible stems. There's some very new and very exciting engineering in there, especially with the stabilizers. Because of this, it's not a finished thing: there's likely more things to change and finalize before they take it to production.

With other products like a filco, or the QFR, it's just a board from an OEM. You just call them, up, talk to them, give them you specs and changes from teh base model and wait for shipments. It's obviously a lot more complicated than that, but it's relatively easy to deal with an OEM like that. Dealing with a japanese company that wants to branch out a little is a new experience for them both, and a lot of relationships have to be set up.

So why does this mean we can't take pictures? it hurts the final product, especially if it's noticeably different. People start to compare the two, people see two versions and get confused about it. It's just a bad idea all 'round. Ideally, no pictures of it should exist at all, aside from some carefully controllerd teaser photos.

The other reason is that this is an entirely new sort of product for them. Until now, they had been targeting the "decent quality and excellent price" sort of market, where it's not 100% top tier, but it's a few steps back from that at a much lower price. The Novatouch is a radical departure from that, as it's a top-tier product, or at least they are aiming it to a top-tier market.

Finally, as a top-of-the-line product, they have to spend a lot of time tweaking it to ensure that it is actually "that" good. That's why the development is taking so long. they are spending a lot of time, effort, and money ensuring that this is indeed as good as they want and especially will also cover as much of the market as possible.

Now keep in mind a lot of this is mainly speculation on my part. I did talk to the guy, and feel like I got a good idea as to what's up. I just think a lot of people are misunderstanding this and especially are underestimating what's going on here.

one thing to note: topre caps will NOT fit on it by design. There's a nub on the slider preventing them. However said nub would be really easy to just shave off....

They said that if the current changes are the final ones it can be out as early as next month, but there may be other updates and it'll add on more time.

keep in mind that that's a 100% best case / fastest scenario. That said, I would expect it to be out in the next few months.

Also keep in mind it has no LEDs for capslock or scrolllock.

I agree but on the other side of the marketing scale---one would want to tread lightly when preparing for a launch such as this.

A delayed launch is much better that immaturely releasing a flawed product IMO--especially in this case when only the niche keyboard communities are generally aware of it.

CM and Topre realistically have one good shot at this. For Topre, the money lost in R & D I reckon is a drop in the bucket. The bigger thorn in the side will be the the negative press potentionally recieved .  Topre is associated with excellence. Can't mar the Image!!  [Typeheaven wut]

Just to clarify why no pics are allowed is because we are treating this as our baby and we want to be as careful as possible. This is a global launch (CM is pretty big) unlike you've seen from our competitors in the premium keyboard segment. A lot of our overseas teams would like to keep everything synchronized.

Also we are not just targetting the mechanical keyboard enthusiast, but attempting to bring keyboard enthusiasm to the mass market. We want to grow this community and the appreciation for better technology.

Most of you have seen pictures from CES/Computex. The minor changes we're doing to final are going under final batch of testing. It's also the reason why we didn't show final packaging ;)

Also, why should you get to see the latest pics if you didn't go to KeyCon?
Pfft.... gotta have benefits to showing up.

I second the recommendation for group photo with names! Would be good to put names to faces of everyone that was there.

Looks like a lot of fun. Wish I could have gone.

Good luck in bringing keyboard enthusiasm to the mass market.  That is a tall order.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing
