Thank you JMD! I try to coax as much beauty as my skills allow out of these wonderful little sculptures, and hopefully flesh out the original intention of the sculptor while putting my own little spin on things. :)

Nick,

It may be hard for me to put my personal bias aside with this one, but I don't think anyone would dispute that the "Empire" Keybuto is on a completely new and higher level.  Your work routinely outdoes itself, but never have I seen such concentrated, handcrafted precision, storytelling, and symbolism in such a tiny space.

I can easily picture the lucky owner of this keycap proudly showcasing it as a unique history lesson and one-of-a-kind conversation piece.  It tackles a controversial subject by showcasing the power and pride of Imperial Japan while simultaneously, and crucially, acknowledging its sinister side, the historicity of its mistakes, and the miracle of its remediation.  The artist's passion for the engaging subject and its unique canvas instills awe down to the microscopic level and commands respect and admiration.

Astounding work!

Many thanks for your kind words Bambino, they mean a lot to me. :)

This is a project I've wanted to tackle for at least six months but kept putting off out of sheer doubt I'd be able to execute it off to a reasonable standard. It did prove to be hugely challenging, but rewarding in the way only keycaps that've taken me outside my comfort zone have been. Your original Keybuto is still one my favorite artisans and this was my attempt to get the absolute most out of it while attempting to create something fresh and full of meaning.

Regarding the subject matter, my take on it is that the War represents a tragic period in Japan's history (and indeed the world's) when millions were made to suffer for questionable values, but it also provides us with a valuable reminder of the dangers of totalitarianism and those who follow ideologies blindly. I think its critically important to remember the mistakes of the past lest we repeat them, a point more poignant with what's been happening in Korea recently. For the record I am a pacifist and believe nothing good ever comes of war.

That cap is immediately the clearest example of art in the keyboard community.

That said, the imperial flag choice maybe dilutes your message. I'd err on the side of arguing that nostalgic representations of horrors are different from acknowledgements of their significance (e.g. you could have chosen faded colours or inverted the colours in a macabre representation or used the pattern but not the tones etc.). Yes, juxtaposition with the bloodied face is a clear enough intent, but the overall tone I get from the cap is 'resilience' not 'damage'. And when that is juxtaposed with the imperial flag, you may get some backlash.

This isn't me saying I don't like the cap. In fact, I'm going to try and get it. Art isn't really about trying to avoid being uncomfortable.

Many thanks clappingcactus. :)

It was certainly not my intention to offend anyone with the subject matter but I did set out to create a piece of art I hoped would have a powerful visual and psychological impact. Ultimately everyone's free to judge the final result as they see fit, although my intention was largely to portray the tragedy and cost of Japan's journey down a dark path which holds a valuable lesson for the present.

Here's my rebuilt Lightsaver v3. I recently inherited this awesome Spacebear by HWS, which was commissioned some time ago with Nick (KPG) to be painted. I love it! :thumb:
