Bleaching Filco Case?
« on: Tue, 03 November 2015, 14:35:22 »
Hey DIYers,

I have a Filco MJ1 with an off-white case, basically like this...

)

...and I want to make the case more of a normal white. Would a brief bleach bath achieve this effect without harming the case?

If not, does anyone else have any suggestions? I'd prefer not to go the paint or plasti-dip method if possible.

Thanks!

mmm I think pure bleach would possibly warp it or blotch it.

There is some chemical people use on here to make yellowed IBM's white again.

Its like oxyclean or something. I cant remmember the exact name.

Something Oxy I think?

I will have to find the name now.

Edit: Oxy Bright maybe?

I did think about using retr0bright, but I'm pretty sure that only works to revert old plastic to it's original colour. Since the case was beige to begin with, I don't think it would do anything.

Have you thought about hydro-dipping your case?

I only say retrobright because it was specificaly made for abs plastic. So i know for a fact it will be safe on the keyboard.

Bleach on the other hand.. idk..

maybe if you dilute it?

retrobright is pretty much Hydrogen peroxide with some detergent in it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retr0bright

so maybe you can make your own mix?

Yea I have, that's kinda my last resort. It looks pretty good, but I'm not a fan of the glossy finish.

Yea I am unsure what affects the bleach could have as well, I was hoping somewhere here might have experimented in the past. I may try retr0bright but I am pretty skeptical if it will work in this case.

I know what you mean. There's nothing quite like the matte finish of good 'ol plastic  ;). Good luck, let us know the retrobright works out if you choose that route.

I remmember a long time ago, someone used it on their HHKB Pro 2 case to make the off white one more white. It worked for it. It may work for the filco
